ʕ͡°ᴥ ͡°ʔ Welcome to Brain’s General Player versus Player (PvP) guide ʕ͡°ᴥ ͡°ʔ! Whether you’re new to PvP and looking to get started or you’re a veteran that’s coming back after a break, there are fundamentals that are key to know when stepping into PvP. This guide will go over several topics that are important to improving and being successful in the arena.
Getting Started
Before you step into the arena, you should aim to figure out what talents and honor talents are best for your class and specialization; if there is variance, find out what talents are best in what situations. Honor Talents are on a separate tree than normal talents. In addition, you should try to figure out what the best azerite traits and secondary stats are for you, and in what order (haste, versatility, mastery, crit). Attempting to have the best gear you can is also now beneficial for PvP, as your gear is now factored into how much damage and healing you will do.
Useful Addons
Downloading certain useful addons is also recommended before you queue up for PvP as they will help you out in multiple ways.
There are many addons that can enhance your PvP gameplay. A lot of these addons help in different ways, such as tracking cooldowns of both your teammates and your enemies, as well as other things such as enemy interrupts. Other addons can also help to track diminishing returns. I will separate them into two categories: addons that I believe are very important and addons that I think are good for quality of life improvements. Keep in mind that these are just some addons that come to mind. Feel free to use whatever addons you want to!
Very Important
Gladius/SArena
Provides you with customizable enemy arena frames, as well as the ability to track diminishing returns and enemy trinkets. Major cooldowns can be set to appear on enemy frames.
OmniBar
Tracks enemy interrupts and cooldowns.
Quality of Life
BigDebuffs
Increases debuff size and shows important buffs and debuffs on unit frames.
TellMeWhen
Visual and/or audio notification of buffs, procs, and cooldowns.
PartyAbilityBars
Shows teammates’ cooldowns.

Useful Macros
Having macros is also quite helpful as they usually instantly perform an action, essentially cutting down on time.
There are many macros that are used in PvP, especially in arena. Macros help because they allow players to quickly do something without needing to target someone before doing so, essentially reducing the actions needed from multiple to just one. An example would be if a Mage wanted to
变形术
the enemy team’s healer. Instead of targeting the enemy healer and casting Polymorph, they can just use their 'focus Polymorph' macro to cast Polymorph on the enemy healer without dropping their current target. This not only saves time but also allows them to quickly be able to damage the enemy they have targeted. There are different types of macros, which I will separate into categories.
Focus Macros
These are macros that do something to whoever you have set as your focus. They can be made with this format in the macros tab (replace “Y” with the spell).
/cast Y
Party/Teammate Macros
These are macros that do something to your teammate. Depending on who you want the spell to be cast on, they can be made with this format in the macros tab (replace “X” with either their character name or the party number they are assigned with, and “Y” with the spell).
/cast Y or /cast Y
Set Target/Set Focus Macros
Target macros will target a certain person in the arena, whether it be your teammates or your enemies. Depending on who you want to target, they can be made with this format in the macros tab (replace “X” with either their character name or the party number they are assigned with).
If you want to target your teammate: /target X or /target partyX
If you want to target an enemy arena player, you must use the number they are assigned with (replace “X” with the arena number they are assigned with - the player on the top being 1, second being 2, third being 3).
/target arenaX
Similarly, focus macros can be made with this format in the macros tab:
If you want to focus your teammate: /focus X or /focus partyX
If you want to focus an enemy arena player, you must use the number they are assigned with (replace “X” with the arena number they are assigned with - the player on the top being 1, second being 2, third being 3).
/focus arenaX
Types of Compositions
In arenas, there are generally two types of compositions: offensive compositions and defensive compositions. Depending on what type of composition you are playing, you will generally have a strategy that you will want to win with.
As an offensive composition, you will usually want to win by being aggressive for most of the game and gaining momentum early on. You want to make it so the other team can’t recover without using major cooldowns, and secure the win when the enemy team essentially has no more cooldowns to respond to your pressure with. Offensive compositions, when versing defensive compositions, are generally on a figurative timer - the longer the game goes on, the harder it gets for them to secure a win as they can no longer continue to keep the pressure up and ultimately lose momentum of the game. Most offensive compositions gain momentum by trying to go for offensive plays as often as possible, usually in the form of crowd controlling and damaging during those crowd control windows. These offensive plays are commonly referred to as ‘goes’.
Examples of offensive compositions include: Jungle Cleave (Feral Druid/Hunter/Healer), Cupid Cleave (Retribution Paladin/Hunter/Healer), and RMX (Rogue/Mage/Healer). Offensive compositions can play with any healer, but are most commonly played with Discipline Priests as they have arguably the most damage of the healers and can help crowd control the enemy team with
心灵尖啸
and
精神控制
. Discipline Priests also have the ability to offensively dispel the enemy team’s buffs and
群体驱散
immunities that are either on the enemy team or their own teammates, such as
圣盾术
and
寒冰屏障
as well as crowd control on their teammates such as
旋风
.
As a defensive composition, you will usually want to win by surviving the enemy team’s offensive plays until they are not able to keep up with the pressure and lose momentum. This is usually achieved by having your team peel during the enemy team’s ‘goes’. There are multiple ways to peel, with the main one being crowd control. Defensive compositions should aim to be as disruptive as possible during the enemy team’s go in order to break up or leave gaps in the enemy team’s crowd control chain. This is usually done by spamming crowd control abilities during the goes. Alternatively, it is possible to peel the enemy team’s go by doing too much damage for the enemy team to be able to stay in without dying, but this is usually less reliable and not guaranteed.
Examples of defensive compositions include: LSX (Lock/Shaman/Healer) and Thunder Cleave (Warrior/Elemental Shaman/Healer). Defensive compositions are most commonly played with Restoration Druids as they provide the most efficient healing overall while also being extremely hard to kill outside of crowd control. This is due to most Restoration Druids playing with
守护亲和
, giving them increased damage reduction as well as the ability to
狂暴回复
, which is usually not possible to kill through if they use both charges. In addition, most of a Restoration Druid’s healing comes from healing over time effects (HoTs), so they are still healing when they are crowd controlled.

guide!
Diminishing Returns – What They Are and How to Manage Them
Diminishing Returns, commonly abbreviated as ‘DR’, is a mechanic that makes it so that spells with some sort of crowd control effect are less effective if used multiple times within a certain window of time. There are multiple categories of diminishing returns.
Categories include:
Incapacitate
Disorient
Fear
Stun
Silence
Root
A target starts with no diminishing returns, meaning that any crowd control used on it will sit for its full duration. After the first crowd control, any further crowd control of the same category as the first will result in three types of diminishing returns in order: 50% (crowd control will sit for half duration), 75% (crowd control will sit for quarter duration), and then 100% (target will be immune to that category of crowd control). Diminishing returns are tracked on an 18 second duration, meaning that after a player has not been targeted with a certain category of crowd control for at least 18 seconds, then the next one of that category will once again sit full, with the cycle repeating itself.
You can manage diminishing returns by paying attention to the DR tracker that is included in some addons, such as Gladius or SArena. For DR trackers, the colors are as follows: green means that the next crowd control of that category will be half, yellow means it will be quarter, and red means it will be immune.
As you can see in the image above, the
变形术
icon has a red border with the number ‘8’. This means that the targets are immune to Polymorph and crowd controls of the same category for 8 more seconds. After the 8 seconds have gone by, diminishing returns will reset and the targets are then able to be crowd controlled again by that same category. Multiple DRs will show up if the target has been the victim of multiple crowd control categories.
In general, you should try to not reset DRs when they are close to falling off. If you do, you will have to wait the full 18 seconds for the DR to reset, while only crowd controlling the target for half or quarter (whatever the DR was at). You should only aim to crowd control and reset DRs when they are close to falling off if you think you need to in order for your team to survive or if you can secure a kill by doing so.

guide!
Dampening
抑制
is a stacking debuff that is present in arenas in order to prevent matches from lasting too long and ending in a draw. Dampening reduces the effectiveness of both healing and absorptions received by 1% per stack. Once Dampening starts, for every 10 seconds that pass, players will receive an extra stack of it until 100 stacks (100%). Out of combat health regeneration is not affected by Dampening.
Note: As of Patch 7.2, & Gladiator mount: 2400+ Personal Rating; receiving the Gladiator mount requires additional wins after securing Gladiator
: 2100-2399 Personal Rating
: 1800-2099 Personal Rating
: 1600-1799 Personal Rating
*New title* Combatant: 1400-1599 Personal Rating
As for Rated Battlegrounds, title rewards were given after a PvP season ended with these requirements:
/: End the PvP season in the top 0.5% of your faction’s rated battleground ladder (requires 50 games won).
/: End the PvP season in the top 3% of your faction’s rated battleground ladder (requires 50 games won).
/: End the PvP season in the top 10% of your faction’s rated battleground ladder (requires 50 games won).
/: End the PvP season in the top 35% of your faction’s rated battleground ladder (requires 50 games won).
However, it is unsure if they will make changes to the rated battleground reward system, and if they do, they haven't stated how so yet.

Conclusion
Just like this guide, there are also many other resources out there designed to help you get into and improve in PvP. Keep in mind that although there are general strategies that certain guides will mention, they may not necessarily work for you - so don’t be afraid to experiment and see what works best for you.
