WoW Add-Ons For New Players and Beginners
I recently met someone who was completely and totally new to World of Warcraft. To help him get acclimated to the game and community, I decided to start gathering some resources for new players. I felt like it would be easier as an existing player since I could weed out the misinformed or misleading guides. Instead, I was kind of shocked at the lack of helpful guides out there specifically targeting new players. Yes, I did find some guides that were semi-useful but I wasn’t happy with most of them. I either felt like the guides were too fast for a new player to follow, too slow or boring that I felt myself falling asleep, or they just weren’t detailed enough to the point that I felt like a general WoW player would understand but not a newer player.
My friend was getting the hang of the game but I wanted to help him dip his toes into the world of add-ons. I wanted to recommend add-ons that weren’t so intensive that they would change the user interface completely or confuse a new player to the point of frustration. If you’re new to a game you want to enjoy all it has to offer and the rest will come with time. So I compiled a mini-guide for him showing how to download add-ons and which ones I recommended to start with. After I had it made I figured, “Why not share it with the rest of the new add-on users out there?” and that’s exactly what I did. My name is Bell and I will be helping you on your journey into the world of add-ons!
What are Add-Ons?
Add-ons are "quality of life" modifications for World of Warcraft that serve to improve or simplify your gaming experience. They allow you to custom tailor your game by enhancing and simplifying elements of gameplay, adding certain features, and allowing you to customize your user interface (UI). Most experienced players would agree that having at least a few specific add-ons are necessary to be able to play World of Warcraft at an intermediate or higher skill level.
You can manage all of your add-ons on the character selection screen:
or in-game using the wow menu:
Downloading Add-Ons
The process for downloading add-ons should be the same regardless if you have a PC or Mac. I recommend downloading the Twitch App for your computer which makes it easy to manage and update any add-ons. If you have dabbled in add-ons before and you never update your apps, yours may still be listed as the Curse Desktop App. The Twitch App which can be downloaded
here
.
Click “
Download Twitch
”
If you don't already have a Twitch account, you will need to create one in order to use the app
Once you have the app downloaded and set up it should look like this:
Click On “
Mods
” on the top left hand side.
Click on WoW.
You’ll then have 2 different screens “
My Addons
” and “
Get More Addons
”:
At this point you can browse and download Add-Ons in the app if you choose to by:
Clicking on “
Get More Addons
”
Click on an Add-On you'd like to download
Click "
Install
"
Your Add-Ons will download and you don't need to do anything else!
*What I would recommend to anyone that just wants to browse Add-Ons
: do it directly on the
Curse website
. In my opinion the website is simpler, easier to navigate, and more organized. The categories for different add-ons are along the left-hand side and you can download any add-ons from your internet browser directly to the app by clicking the purple twitch install button on the right side (just make sure you're logged in).
Great Add-Ons For New Players (in no particular order)
I have come to know and love all of these add-ons and there is no way I could live my life without most of them (if not all). The thing about add-ons is: you don't realize how much you need them until you've tried them. I have compiled a few of my favorite add-ons that I believe will be perfect for someone new. Try them out, you may find you can't live without them either!
Side Note: Although these posts will include a lot of subjectivity, I have included specific "Author's Thought's" sections in purple text case you want my opinion.
Bartender is one of those add-ons that is almost universally used among players. Bartender allows you to add more action bars to your screen, customize where they go, and easily add keybindings to your action bars. You can change the size, shape, and spacing of your bars in a way that you just can't with the normal blizzard UI. It is a pretty easy add-on to use but if you like the default Blizzard action bars it is not necessary.
This was one of my first add-ons when I was a new player and I found my gameplay improve significantly once I found a set-up I liked.
Check out Bartender 4 here
or check out the images below!
*Please ignore my different UI Bartender 4 is the action bars and options only! The UI add-on I use is called LUI and it's a complete user interface overhaul.
As a new player, the auction house (AH) can be a little intimidating. Auctionator/auctioneer make the AH easier to use so that you'll be an AH pro in no time. These add-ons improve the interface of the WoW auction house by adding extra tabs for buying, selling, etc. They make it easier to buy and sell things on the AH and also give you the ability to scan the auction house for prices. This feature adds a helpful price to an item's tooltip that tells you how much the item costs on your server's AH. By holding shift the price on the tool-tip will change from the price per item to the price of the stack size you're looking at. So for example, if you have a stack of 15
灵纹布
in your bags hovering over it will give you a selling price of per cloth but holding shift will tell you that the whole stack is worth . The best thing about these add-ons is they
don't replace the base AH
but instead add more features to it. So you can use the regular AH at any time without needing to disable the add-on.
I prefer Auctionator to Auctioneer because I believe it is cleaner looking and more user-friendly.

Bagnon takes the several bag windows that are open normally and converts it into one simple window. This add-on makes it so much easier to manage your inventory and stay organized. If you ever want to look at one bag specifically, you still have the option of "closing" your other bags to look at one at a time. Its size, color, and opacity are all customizable and once you have it set up the way you like it on one character you don't need to set it up on any of your alts. It also adds helpful buttons to your inventory window and allows you to view your bank without being near it and the bags/banks of your alts without needing to log over. It also adds to an item's tooltip, telling you how many of that item you have in your bags, bank, and on other your other toons.
Bagnon was one of those add-ons that snuck up on me. I didn't think I would like the mass bag at first but once I came up with an organizational system I fell in love with it, HARD. My favorite thing about this add-on is that you can disable some of the features in the blizzard add-on list. I personally am not a fan of the changes bagnon makes to the guild bank, so I have that feature turned off.

Postal is one of those add-ons you download, don’t have to set-up, generally improves your life, and you don’t even realize it’s there. It enhances the mailbox by adding very small changes like a contact list, clickable icons, basic shortcuts, adds an "open all" feature to your inbox, displays a summary of money gained from opening mail, etc. It’s the type of add-on that's so simple, doesn’t add too much, and isn’t overbearing.
Postal is amazing and everyone needs it. You don't think you need it but you do.

You know when you are out and about just enjoying the game? You kill some things, loot some stuff, and by the time you get back to an inn or city your bags are BURSTING with random gray items. Useless, totally 100% useless items that you now need to spend your time going through your bags and deleting. Scrap does all that for you everytime you click on a merchant. You can even set it to automatically repair your gear as well. This will save you so much time in the long run and it even includes a tiny tutorial to help you learn the add-on.
I do not have Scrap itself because I use a user interface add-on (LUI) that has a similar type of add-on already included. I wanted to include an add-on that did essentially the same thing and, through browsing curse, scrap seemed to be the best.

Mapster is another one of those really simple add-ons. It really just enhances the world map. It allows you to change the size and opacity of the map, change the size of icons and objectives, adds coordinates, removes fog of war, etc. It's extremely simple and once you set it up the way you like it you really don't need to do anything else.
My favorite feature of mapster is the fog of war removal which fills in the map completely even if you haven't explored an area. I did explorer on my main and was always annoyed playing alts when there were spots missing on my world map. The best part is you can add a color and opacity to the fog of war. So I have my unexplored areas filled in but they are tinted slightly purple so that I can see the whole map but still have an idea of what's unexplored. It's a total win-win.

With Fog of War:
Without Fog of War:
A meter add-on is another one of those universally used add-ons. What Skada and Details! essentially do is track information during fights and give you a break down of specific aspects. This could be damage, healing, dispels, damage taken, etc. It is very customizable and is amazing when trying to improve your ability rotation or compare your damage and healing numbers against other players. The point of these add-ons is not to link your numbers to brag about how amazing you are, but instead, use it to reflect and acknowledge your mistakes to become a better player.
Recount
used to be a very popular option as well, but I believe it has fallen in popularity. As far as I know, there are some players who still use it but skada and details! seem to be the better choices.
I used to use recount a long time ago but it gave me a lot of errors, would crash my game, and became generally frustrating. I switched to Skada and have never had any issues. They may have switched any issues since I have used recount, but I honestly don't really know any players that still use this add-on. I could be wrong but again these are just my experiences and opinions. I do not have any personal experiences with Details!

These are good max level, PVE add-ons that provide visual and audible alerts during raid and dungeon encounters. They alert you to fight mechanics that you need to be aware of and provide timers for abilities so that you can plan accordingly. Both DBM and BigWigs include plug-ins for different content.
I have always used DBM, but have heard that BigWigs is a popular choice among higher level players.

GTFO improves your situational awareness by providing an audible alert. This is another great PVE add-on for players who plan to be doing dungeons and raids since it alerts you to get out of damaging and harmful abilities. Admittedly the add-on's alert is obnoxious and annoying, like the beeping that happens when you drive without a seatbelt, but it is pretty helpful and does allow you to change the volume of the alerts.

While the guide part is good, the addons listed for new players is not. bartender and bagnon are horrible addons for new players and beginners. both of those tend to break every patch and are usually down for up to a few days after. also..if anything happens with those addons, players that use them tend to be in bad shape as they have no familiarity with the basic ui. Postal isnt needed as a new or beginning player, and even most veteran players will have no use for it.
As for the "extras" ..most have no use being on a new or beginner list, as the features they have are for intermediate to advanced users. and some (looking at you faster loot) have the potential to get someone banned.
The only ones on that list that belong there are Auctionator (not auctioneer as that one is much more complex), scrap, recount (skada has had issues this whole xpac, and details is a pain to set up so its useful), DBM (bigwigs isnt used as much, so dbm has a better chance of meshing with pugs),and GTFO.
2 i would add for "extras" would be Coordinates (for getting locations and directions easier), and Nomicakes (because nomi is a pain)

I would say that if you are a new player leveling up through Azeroth for the first time, you should definitely try the
Storyline
addon. It makes reading the quests and learning about lore much easier. It was also a big help when I did my loremaster achievement!

I think a really good leveling mod that I am using for leveling alts is called, Immersion. Immersion basically turns that long box of text into a talking head frame that starts using emotes to communicate with you. Here is a link to it.

I find the constant nags to update DBM annoying. It matters little to me that a boss timer has been adjusted by 50 milliseconds.

For bags, i would strongly recommend
AdiBags
which automatically sorts your bags (consumable, armor, weapons, trash, quests, etc.)

This
is one of my favorite addons, since you don't have to take your eyes off your character to check your health, target's health, or your mana/energy/whatever.

My favorite Bag addon is Combuctor. The tabs on the side to organize whats in your bags appeals more to me than the other bag addons, and feels like it fits the default Blizzard UI better than Bagnon.
I can't add a link since I'm still new, but its on Curse/Twitch.

Within the last couple of days the addon called Postal has borked out. It has the Alt list grayed out and is not working as well as it did a week ago. Something in the latest Bliz patch did something to it but I cannot figure out why or what.
If you are going to suggest addons, I would recommend someone on your staff double check that the addons you recommend are actually working as intended. I suspect something behind the scenes that might be connected in some manner to an auction house string, might be the culprit, but someone with more knowledge about the programming should really double check.
I do not recommend Postal at this point until it has been fixed to work correctly.

with the new patch and updated addons, I just noticed something: Battle.net may tell you that your addons are out of date. Then if you check addons and ok the ones that have been updated and uncheck the ones that haven't, ok them, you may think that's where you're at. Not true. I then loaded the game and found some that I'd okayed to be unchecked. Best to check addons in game and check the ones that are updated, the reload.
