In Battle for Azeroth, Unholy Death Knights have received many different changes, ranging from Talent changes to Gameplay and Rotational changes.
While there are many new abilities and spells, there are also returning ones, previously removed during pruning. On top of those spells, the legacy from Legion lives on with different
legendary effects and artifact traits
returning in BfA as talents, baked into the core spec, or are now
azerite traits
, the BfA version of artifact traits. Gameplay changes are also happening, as some abilities and spells that could be used together with others are now
added to the GCD
.
Some Legion systems got reworked, like Honor talents, now active while questing with
War Mode
turned on, which also grants bonuses, like 10% extra experience while leveling.
In this overview, we'll highlight all class abilities, as well as new, changed, or removed talents. Grey to green text indicate changes between
Legion
and the current version of
Battle for Azeroth
; more information can be found by going to the Changelog within the relevant spell page. Keep in mind that information is largely derived from the tooltips, so typographical errors may be intentional to match.

Some notable overall changes:
Arcane Torrent and Every Man for Himself changed
.
Two of the strongest racial effects have received changes in BfA, with
奥术洪流
receiving a new effect and added to the GCD and
生存意志
having its cooldown increased.
The majority of class cooldowns have been added to the GCD
.
Abilities that are in the Global Cooldown, or GCD, cannot be used at the same time, meaning you must wait for the default GCD, 1.5s reduced by haste, until you can use your next ability.
Before BfA, many abilities were called "off-GCD" as you could two or more of them at the same time, even in the same button macro. For BfA, Blizzard started to reduce to amount of abilities in this state.
All melee abilities now scale with both Attack Power and Weapon Damage
.
The actual ability damage formula for all non-casters has changed, and now all those abilities use both weapon damage and attack power, even abilities like
盾牌猛击
or
凛风冲击
.
This appears to be intended to create a better balance between classes, rather than some favoring weapons heavily (
战士
), while others hardly at all (
武僧
).
Battle for Azeroth has a huge stat and ilvl squish.
Battle for Azeroth implements the second stat squish for World of Warcraft, two expansions after the
Warlords of Draenor Squish
.
Unlike Warlords, Battle for Azeroth will also have an item level squish, changing the item level previously found on classic items as well.

Artifact weapons have been replaced by a more centralized upgrade system in the
艾泽拉斯之心
, which will unlock specific abilities on Helm, Chest and Leg slot equipment.
Legendary Items have been retired.
Along with the retirement of artifact weapons, many of the abilities they once granted have also been removed. The list of removed abilities is below.
Several new abilities and talents have been added to make up for these removed abilities. (Full List below)

Removed Active Abilities
As all of our abilities granted from our Artifact,

were passive abilities, this has resulted in us not losing any active abilities we had throughout Legion. As will be mentioned again, the only active ability, Apocalypse, has been added to our baseline kit, with changes mentioned below. We also, notably, lost

as a baseline ability, but it is now a talent, and replaces

, with similar functionality.

We have lost several meaningful passive abilities. All of the artifact passives have been lost or converted to baseline abilities, but the notable exclusions are as follows:

Most of the other passive abilities being simply passive damage upgrades, will not be very notably missing or have been simply baked into those abilities, but the stat squish makes most of the other passives moot, as they do not affect resource generation or the effects of abilities or pets.
In terms of talents, some have been removed, or sent to new Tiers, or had their effects reworked. Talents that were removed include:

Returning Artifact Traits and Legendary Effects
In Battle for Azeroth, many artifact traits and legendary effects from Legion are turned into talents and baseline abilities. It is known that we will lose our Artifacts

won't work past level 115

Death coil being 40 RP is a bit concerning, but seeing as it's been changed it's likely it has been tested thoroughly.

Corpse explosion is meh, could be okay if we end up producing a lot of ghouls/it's damage gets increased
We thought the fantasy of Unholy being about summoning lots of disposable pets/ghouls was worth trying with this talent. The main worry with

is that it'll be too dependent on

(1.5 min CD) and
亡者大军
(8 min CD), so it's kind of not available often enough, and also might have to be too bursty. Separately tracking and timing your ghoul durations to line up with times when you need the AOE damage might be tough. Gonna keep an eye on this talent and see how it goes.

Bit sad Valkyr is going, but not surprised since it aesthetically didn't fit the theme of Unholy.

It's certainly possible to line up the explosions, but it does require a good sense of your groups damage, add spawns of a fight and positioning of the ghouls. A bit finicky, and overly complicated at times especially as people become more geared.

was a really cool fantasy that we wanted to try as a talent, but had various mechanical problem as many have pointed out. It's being replaced in an upcoming build.

really needs something done to it. The common suggestion of a lot of players is to have it scale with Mastery by doing Shadow damage, but with the rewording/reworking of the Mastery this might be unable to be done?

is currently pretty lackluster.
Knocking 2 minutes off the cooldown of

really isn't significant, since we will still only be able to cast the ability once per encounter - and with its high cost and deployment time, that time will continue to be "before the fighting starts."
New talent reduces the cooldown of

by 5 sec (and Apoc by 1 sec) on
凋零缠绕
casts. Currently cuts the cooldown of
亡者大军
by about half during sustained combat. Generally gives a much greater feeling of having an army of the damned.

is another talent that i never picked during the whole expansion.
Going to try replacing this in the tree with a talent we like better, which we added to Blood recently. Grip of the Dead:

reduces the movement speed of enemies in the area by 90%, decaying by 10% every sec. (pending further tuning) Brings a uniquely powerful initial snare, which quickly decays in strength. Remains to be seen how the magnitude plays out.
Resource generation needs to be looked at. Even when running IC/PP theres times where I am sitting on my hands doing nothing for up to 5secs. The proc rate for wounds from IC also needs to be upped as we no longer generate energy for the

with DC so overall

usage is down over legion.
We'll be continuing to tune resources, including

chance as needed. Worth noting is we just added some proc normalization to

and instead placing its value as a multi-target talent on its increased uptime (it's currently a 20 sec cooldown) compared to

. Both of these changes should be in the next build, and we'll continue to keep an eye on this.
General Death Knight Changes

Surrounds you in an Anti-Magic Shell for 5 sec, absorbing up to 1] magic damage and preventing application of harmful magical effects. Damage absorbed generates Runic Power.

Tier 4 Talent
StrikeRip out an enemy's soulfor 371% Shadow damage, afflicting them with Soul Reaper for 5 sec.
Bursting a Festering Wound on an enemy, dealing Shadow damage over 8 sec.
If the enemy that yields experience of honor dies while afflicted by Soul Reaper grants 7% Haste for 15 sec, stacking up to 3 timesyou gain 10% Haste for 8 sec.
Generates 2 Runes.
Tier 4 Talent

Your Anti-Magic Shell is 20% largerAnti-Magic Shell absorbs 30% more magic damage and lasts 5 sec longer.

Honor Talents

Places a dark ward on an enemy player that persists for 12 sec, triggering when the enemy next spends mana on a spell, and allowing the Death Knight to unleash an exact duplicate of that spell.Against nonplayers, only absorbs some harmful spells.

All enemies within 10 yards slowly decay, losing up to 3% of their max health every 2 sec. Stacks up to 5 times. Lasts for 6 sec.

Ghouls summoned by Army of the Dead leap together to form a single ghoulish monstrosity.
Reduces the cooldown of Army of the Dead by 4 min.

A vicious strike that deals 100%(16.4424% of Attack power) Plague damage, and converts 1 Festering Wound into a Necrotic Wound, absorbing the next (900225 / 100 * Attack power) healing received by the target.

When your Virulent Plague is dispelled or ends its duration, a Slime spawns dealing (1000%) Plague damage and slowing all enemies within 8 yardsVirulent Plague now erupts for 400% of normal eruption damage when dispelled or it expires. Targets struck by this eruption have their movement speed reduced by 50% for 36 sec.
The Slime lasts for 8 sec.

Weapon Damage to AP Conversion Death Knight Changes

Instantly strike the target and 1 other nearby enemy, causing (203%31.05% of Attack power) Physical damage, and reducing enemies' movement speed by 50%20% for 8 sec.
Generates 5 bonus Runic Power

Smash the target, dealing 315%37.557% of Attack Power Physical damage and generating 3 charges of Bone Shield.
