The Stealthy Swordsman - Rogue PvE Guide
Do you want to do tons of damage through a barrage of fast attacks? Yes? Well, then Rogue is the class for you! In Classic WoW Rogues are capable of climbing the dps meters with consistent and steady damage, burst damage using
冲动
to spam abilities, or cleaving enemies with
剑刃乱舞
! Rogues are not only good for damage, but can also aid their raid by disabling traps, lowering armor with
, or locking an enemy down with crowdcontrol effects.
Classic Rogue Races
Because characters take longer to level and gear in Classic WoW, choosing the right race is an important part of character creation. Whether you're looking for the right aesthetics, or trying to decide on the best racial bonuses for a Rogue, our guide will help you make the right decision the first time. Remember that race changing didn't exist in Patch 1.12, so your choice is most likely permanent!
Best Horde Rogue Race
For a PvE focused rogue player on Horde, the decision comes down to choosing between
兽人
and their racial ability
血性狂怒
or
巨魔
and their racial ability
狂暴
. Although Trolls are obviously extremely good looking, Orcs are the better choice for pure DPS. Blood Fury's attack power increase not only yields more damage output than the haste from Berserking but also lasts longer than Berserking does.
Best Alliance Rogue Race
Alliance has more of a clear choice when choosing the best PvE race for Rogues. All four Alliance races are able to become a Rogue, but only
人类
has a racial ability that actually contributes to DPS,
(the use of weapon skill will be found later in the guide). Rogues have multiple different weapon specializations they can spec into in their combat talent tree, but the best one of them is
. With that said, swords are a rogue's primary weapon of choice.
Rogue Talent Builds
Unlike retail WoW, Classic uses a more traditional talent system consisting of three separate trees, which any Rogue may freely spec into. Each tree is themed to a specific specialization and requires points to be invested to progress further, with each capped by a special ability requiring 31 points. With a total of 51 points available at level 60, you could invest all of your points in one tree or spread them across multiple in order to create your own hybrid specialization and playstyle.
In this guide, we'll discuss some of the more powerful and popular builds, which talents you can't live without, and which you can afford to tailor to your preference.

Standard Sword Spec (19/32/0)
This is the bread and butter spec that rogue players will want to play as for most of the game. In this build, the Rogue player has access to almost all of the damage boosting talents possible. Cooldowns such as
冲动
and
剑刃乱舞
for burst situations are also available in this build.
One oddity of this build that needs to be pointed out is the inclusion of
. Rogue players in this talent build are almost always going to be using swords in both main hand and offhand. However, having Improved Backstab is useful on unique fights like
瓦拉斯塔兹
where you get the debuff
红龙精华
, regenerating 50 energy a second. Allowing you to spam Backstab to your heart's content!
Expose Armor (19/32/0)
This talent build is strictly worse DPS output when compared to the standard sword spec. It still has all of the essential abilities but drops two points in
for two points into
. Although this build does a bit less damage, it is necessary for one rogue player to use this build. Lowering a boss' armor goes a long way for the DPS output of all the physical damage classes.
Sadly,
and
do not stack so one of the two has to be chosen. If a rogue is specced into Improved Expose Armor, Expose Armor will reduce more armor than Sunder Armor will.
Eviscerate (19/32/0)
Normally, rogues simply want to keep
up at all times and rely on auto attack damage as their primary source of damage. However, when reaching Ahn'Qiraj you will be able to obtain your 5 piece tier 2.5 set which increases Eviscerate damage by a whopping 15%! At this point in time, it is better to drop the 2 points in
for 2 points into
for a harder hitting finishing move!
Daggers (15/31/5)
Unfortunately, dagger Rogues are generally weaker than sword Rogues. The reason being that
, while being a great ability, does less damage per energy spent than
does. The high-energy cost of Backstab also makes it tougher to be able to keep
up at all times. However, it is still great to have at least one dagger rogue. This is simply because if all of your rogues are specced into swords, there will not be enough good swords dropping in the raid to gear all of them up! That is when daggers come into play. If you end up being the dagger rogue in the raid, you can end up collecting pieces of gear before all of your other rogue teammates. Allowing you to hit your power spike earlier.
Essential Rogue Consumables for Raid
Consumables are a vital part of Classic WoW, particularly in end-game raiding. With a gigantic pool of potential enhancements, there are multiple different consumables that you can use to improve your performance, as well encounters that rely on specific consumables for success! That means that depending on where your group is heading off, there are different consumables that should be brought, and lots of items to keep up with in Classic WoW.

Classic Rogue Professions
Professions are an important part of Classic WoW, offering useful benefits to players dedicated enough to maximize their potential. Whether crafting and enchanting pieces of gear, supplying your own consumables, or utilizing unique gadgets, professions can considerably enhance your gameplay. Luckily, there are no professions that Rogues must absolutely choose to craft any specific piece of gear, but often many Rogues will skill into

. As we all know, Rogues wear leather armor, making skinning a perfect match for them allowing them to collect high-end leather to craft some of their pre-raid best in slot pieces. Primarily the
魔暴龙护甲
set.
As for a secondary profession, Rogues can compliment their skinning with

, but can never go wrong with all of the items that

, is able to bring for additional damage or utility for your raid, using items such as

Weapon Skill
As seen in the Race Selection and Talents portion of this guide, the term "weapon skill" comes up. In Classic WoW a player has a weapon skill level for each type of weapon to demonstrate how proficient they are with any given type of weapon. The primary reason that weapon skill is so important is because of the "glancing blows" mechanic. The lower the player's weapon skill is, the more damage you lose on a glancing blow.
Glancing blows not only significantly reduce the amount of damage that your auto attack would do, but will also negate the chance of that auto attack being able to be a critical strike! Since Rogue DPS is heavily focused around their auto attacks, having high weapon skill is imperative!
Raiding Playstyle
Spanning six raids and six world bosses, WoW Season of Mastery contains a lot of raid content for players to experience, broken up by a Seasonal release schedule. While all of the content won't be made available immediately on launch, you can prepare for them ahead of time with our WoW Raid Guides. Knowledge is power, and some classes or talent builds perform better in one raid over another, so knowing what you're going to face is key to defeating it!
Here we will cover what do you need to know when facing different challenges in dungeons and raids. It is important to remember that, unlike in retail, not every class has a good answer to every situation, with some even having complex restrictions, due to gameplay limitations like the debuff limit mechanic.
Single Target
Single target rotation for Rogues is fairly simple, keep
up at all times! Most often times the rogue player will start a fight off by dumping their pooled up energy into
, then following up with their first
being 2 or 3 combo points. Following the opening, you will use combo points on
. In addition to maintaining this play style, rogues can use
冲动
and
剑刃乱舞
to burst down bosses quickly!
Multi Target
Unfortunately, rogues do not have any abilities that hit more than one target and because of that, lack in the AoE damage department. The best option is using
剑刃乱舞
so that your attacks hit one additional target. This makes rogues strong in scenarios that include 2-3 targets, but not so strong beyond that many targets.
Poisons
Since debuff slots are limited in Classic WoW, using
空的毒药瓶
is out of the question. This means that the only poison a rogue will likely be able to use is
空的毒药瓶
.
Final Thoughts
Rogues have not one, but TWO DPS cooldowns and are capable of doing top tier DPS in Classic WoW. As a rogue you can even
when your guild is wiping to a boss, letting you live when everyone else can't! Who doesn't want that!?

Would like to point out that at some point (I forget when and with what gear) dagger combat outshines sword combat spec in PvE. Was definitely by Naxx, but it's been so long I forget when the transition happens.

The reason being that Backstab, while being a great ability, does less damage per energy spent than Sinister Strike does.
On the contrary,

Weapon Damage = Weapon DPS x Weapon Speed + AP-based DPS x Normalized Weapon Speed
Using a 70 DPS, 2.7 Speed Sword vs. a 70 DPS, 1.8 Speed Dagger, and 1400 AP (= 100 AP-based DPS). For lower level gear, the difference is even more pronounced, because of BS's large static additional damage (+210*).
Untalented, we have:
SS = Weapon Damage + 68 = 70 x 2.7 + 100 x 2.4 + 68 = 497 for 497 / 45 =
11.04
DPE
BS = Weapon Damage x 1.5 + 210 = (70 x 1.8 + 100 x 1.7) x 1.5 + 210 = 699 for 699 / 60 =
11.65
DPE
Talented, SS gains 6% extra damage from Aggression, and obviously 5 less energy cost from Improved Sinister Strike. BS gains 30% extra crit from Improved Backstab, 20% more damage from Opportunity
SS = 497 x 106% = 527 for 527 / 40 =
13.17
DPE
Assuming 35% Crit, BS's average damage should be 165% / 135% higher with Improved Backstab alone, so
BS = 699 x 165% / 135% = 854 for
14.23
DPE (

DPE with Opportunity).
On paper, Backstab-builds are usually better than Sinister Strike-builds, but the difference becomes smaller and smaller with higher gear levels (where upwards of 70% of total damage is "white" or at least not energy based damage). In practice, shorter fights (where finishing moves have a larger impact) and the lack of strict positioning requirements make Sinister Strike builds more successful.
*) at these Naxx gear levels, BS will have a new rank available, with +225 static additional damage
