Have you ever wondered which of your Covenant companions for your Missions you actually should level up first? This guide lists all the Companions' final stats at level 60 and explains all their abilities, including guidance for placement and synergy with other Companions. This will provide a little more information than the vague and occasionally erroneous tooltips.
For more information about the Covenant Hall Adventure tables and Covenant missions, please see this guide:
Covenant Adventures: Missions Upgraded for Shadowlands
TLDR; Just to cover this so that there's no confusion: if you're here to find out which Covenant is best for making a lot of gold from mission table: it's
Night Fae
.
If you wonder which companions to find from Torghast to help you getting lot of gold with your Night Fae table: NONE. The less companions you have, the faster you level up your troops (their level is median of your companions' level). You already get 12 companions without ever stepping into Torghast, which is quite enough. Only get the extra companions from Torghast when you know exactly what you're doing. You'll know when that is.
I do hope my guide provides you with some help. Please leave comments and questions so I can fix any typos / mistakes and improve the guide further.
Changes to Companions in Shadowlands Patch 9.1
Plague Deviser Marileth (Necrolord) has been nerfed. In 9.0 Marileth's Volatile Solvent DoT did up to ~300 damage per round to all possible targets, while now it's over 800 damage per round to a single target. So it's still a great DoT that really hurts , but single target only.
1 new Companion added for each Covenant at Renown 44.
1 new Companion added for each Covenant at Renown 62.
1 new Companion added for each Covenant at Renown 71.
2 new Companions added for each Covenant from Torghast.
Ben Howell is possibly shared companion for all, likely from Torghast. We simply don't know yet.
About Adventurer Abilities
Here are some basic facts about how the abilities work. These apply to all Covenants.
If the ability has cooldown of 2, it means it gets used every 3 rounds.
Your units take their turns so that unit with highest current hit points goes first. This can make a significant difference if one of the Companions buffs the others. For example, make sure your Emeni and Theotar have higher hit points than the big hitters that follow them.
As all the stat values here are extrapolated to level 60, some rounding errors may occur, but they don't really affect their rankings.
Farming Torghast for Companions
Using that method, I've gotten every companion for every Covenant fairly fast. Generally it takes maybe 10 minutes each in Upper Reaches.
Different Companions have different requirements for minimum Layers you need to collect them. Some can be acquired on any layer, even layer 1, but so far, many of the Covenant-specific Companions require minimum Layer 2 or 3. Two of the multi-Covenant Companions, Croman and Meatball, require Layer 4 or higher. We don't know for certain the minimum layer for the 9.1 Torghast companions, so if you want to maximize your chances of getting those, you may wish to set your Layer higher.
Pick easy, small and open wing of Torghast. I prefer
上层区域
.
Enter the first floor.
Scan around for any special event (special rare, treasure, quest, Companion). If you see any, it's either new Companion for you or this level is wasted. If the floor has a special event -- not all do -- there will only be one per floor.
As soon as you're convinced this floor has nothing for you, leave instance from the menu.
After few rounds, you learn which levels can have an event and which can not, and where they are located.
Try again until done.
Companions Ranked by Covenant
Kyrian Companions for Covenant Adventures
As both the Phalanx and Halberdier troops are very weak, Kyrians need to rely mostly on their Companions.
Overall, Kyrian is among the weakest Covenants for missions. Kyrian is also the only Covenant that gets one of their Companions from a side quest, and you need to choose whether to take either Pelodis or Nemea, not both. The choice doesn't matter much though, as the two are very similar quality, but Pelodis is winning slightly.

Necrolord Companions for Covenant Adventures
No question about it: Necrolords have the strongest companions. Plaguey, Deathfang, Emeni, Lyra Hailstorm, Bonesmith Heirmir and Plague Deviser Marileth are 6 out of top 7 companions in the game. But just in case there's confusion, Night Fae is still better overall because of their godly regular troops.
If you decide to put the first 5 of them together as one ultra strong team, you will easily defeat everything, not even losing noticeable amount of health doing so, doing literally thousands of damage per turn. That team is so ridiculously overpowered, you might want to split them a bit to have many strong teams instead.
Finally, don't forget to use your Maldraxxus Plaguesinger troops a lot. These are the best damage troops in game -- very squishy though, so you have to be smart about using them. And do note that Plaguesingers are actually melee, not ranged. Unlike Night Fae, where troops do tanking and companions do damage, for Necrolords it's the other way around. Plaguesingers are the ultimate glass cannons. Use them well.

Troops
The Shock Troops are just garbage; ignore them. But Plaguesingers? They're complete monsters. They will outdamage nearly every companion you have, so if you can place them in a safe slot where they don't get killed, go for it! They appear as ranged troops, but
they are actually melee

Night Fae Companions for Covenant Adventures
Night Fae is all about troops, and you can run ton of missions with 4 troops + 1 companion, which is far better than any other Covenant. You could be on more than 20 missions at once. No other Covenant gets even close to that; even 10 simultaneous missions would be very hard as any other Covenant. The downside is that your Companions are quite weak, so tough missions will be tough indeed. By level 60 it won't matter, everything is easy enough.
Put simply, Night Fae is about quantity, not companion quality. Focus on getting your troop level up, which means leveling up top half of your companions. Troop level is median of the level of all of your companions. If you have 23 Companions, your troop level will be exactly equal to your 12th best Companion.
You also don't really want your top companions far ahead of your troops. If your troops are L30, even if you could beat that L48 campaign mission somehow, don't. You'll get it in time. Beating it too early all your missions would upgrade to L36-L57 and your L30 troops would be in big trouble.
Because Night Fae are unique in a way that they rely on troops that are great at tanking with companions along just as the main damage dealers, Night Fae companions are ranked a bit differently than other Covenants. More emphasis on damage, less emphasis on staying alive to do all that damage.

Troops
Unlike any other Covenant, the Night Fae can tank almost anything with 4 Trappers with a single Companion. This allows Night Fae to run an insane number of missions at once, making Night Fae the best Covenant for mission table farming. Trappers are so good, they'd be C-tier if they were companions. Even Grovetenders aren't bad, also making it to lower end of C-tier.

Venthyr Companions for Covenant Adventures
Venthyr started Shadowlands with very weak Companions and troops, but hotfix buffs have put them into a pretty decent position. Nothing can match Necrolords for strength, but Venthyr may well be the second strongest pack right now. The team of Stonehuck +Theotar can do some pretty high damage pretty fast. They're sort of like of Emeni + Plaguey team of the Necrolords. though less effective.
General Draven is one those Companions that may look weak on first glance, but that 20% damage reduction is huge. He has the hit points to protect himself and whole team for a long time.
One oddity about the Venthyr Companions is that they're all very average. Only one of them qualifies for A-tier, but their worst companion is still C-tier.

buffs adjacent allies by 60% for two rounds. Used every 4 rounds. To get full benefit of this, Chachi needs to be middle of front row. This evaluation assumes that. This special ability does not scale so even low level Chachi is huge boost if it can survive on that slot.

Troops
Venthyr troops are very weak. Both of them can be used as fillers/cannon fodder where needed, but they are weaker than any of your Companions, providing negligible value. Between the two, the Soulcasters are better as their damage is respectable. If you can keep them alive with the horribly low hit points, they're ok.

Covenants Compared by Troops Quality
Just to show the massive discrepancy between covenants in terms of their troops quality, here are some results on what happens if you put 4 troopers and 1 companion to run a mission where the companion is not doing tanking for you. Why such specific scenario? Because this is what would be most efficient way to run missions: you only need 1 companion while troops are infinite, and when companion is not tanking, it's not taking any damage and can be sent again immediately. This is how you play Night Fae. The other Covenants' troops are not strong enough to do the same. End result: Night Fae is running 20 missions at once when other factions start running out of cannon fodder after just 4-5, depending on how hard the missions are. Often 4-5 missions running at once is enough, so it's not a huge deal. But if you're skipping good gold/resource missions because you ran out of companions, you'll envy the Night Fae.
In these setups, we have 4 troopers + 1 mediocre companion that hits for ~500 dmg per round and has 2500 hp. There are six enemies, hitting the troops at various amounts depending on difficulty (900-1200 base attack + specials, difficulty varies also how concentrated their damage is). Just to get some numbers out for comparison's sake.

When you consider that most enemy teams tend to have 10k health or more, it becomes obvious that Night Fae can do significant damage before their team starts taking losses, while other three covenants are facing pretty much hopeless odds against anything but the easier opponents.
When you take into account that this assumes troops doing the tanking, next question then is: what if my Companion does the tanking? Well, if you look at the numbers above, you'll notice that only Necrolord troops have high attack values. So using Companions for tanking and troops for damage works pretty well for them. And that's how you should be using your Necrolords. Meanwhile, Kyrian and Venthyr troops are just substandard in every possible way. They can't tank or do enough damage to make them worthwhile.
Night Fae can mix in Grovetenders too. In some scenarios, they may even improve the total result (e.g. the Easy scenario above, 3 Trappers + 1 Grovetender lasted 12 rounds and did 22k damage before first death).

Hey there.
I registered just to say thank you for this list. Not because I was looking for a ranking of the companions but because it's the only complete list of companions out there. At least the only one I could find. Finally I was able to compare the companions available to the ones I already have and see which ones I'm missing.

Thank you, got here through some reddit thread. Been looking for a tier list as a Venthyr main and this is definitely useful. A bit surprised with the high renown venthyr companions being so weak, but also confirmed my guesses about General Draven, Stonehuck and Theotar being super good.

Thank you for this.
Heals on the first round aren’t bad if you’re regularly sending hurt companions off on adventures. Also, the Grovetenders may be weak when looking at a single fight but they allow NF to keep up the highest tempo of missions in comparison to the other covenants. Having healers as troops allow you to send off characters with 1 hp and come back fully healed.

First of all - thank you for taking the time to do a guide for companions that also mentions their strengths and weaknesses!
Do you have any information on the companions added in 9.1 yet (besides the ones for reaching renown 44, which are already added)?
From what I've found in the data, these have been added:
Kyrian:
Hermestes (Renown 44)
赫尔墨斯忒斯
Cromas the Mystic (Renown 62)
秘术师克罗马斯
Auric Spiritguide (Renown 71)
金辉灵魂向导
Kiaranyka (Torghast?)
凯拉尼卡
Ben Howell (Torghast?)
本·豪威尔
ELGU - 007 (Torghast?)
ELGU - 007
I guess either Ben Howell or ELGU - 007 have been cut due to Kyrian having one more follower than the other covenants, and Ben Howell not fitting the aesthetic (he has a connection to the Kyrian campaign however), and ELGU - 007 having a strange name (but then again it's a robot, so who knows).
Necrolords:
Lyra Hailstorm (Renown 44)
莱拉·雹风
Enceladus (Renown 62)
恩克拉多斯
Deathfang (Renown 71)
死亡之牙
Kinessa the Absorbent (Torghast?)
吸收者金尼萨
Ryuja Shockfist (Torghast?)
琉佳·震拳
Night Fae:
Sulanoom (Renown 44)
苏拉努姆
Elwyn (Renown 62)
艾尔雯
Yanlar (Renown 71)
娅恩拉
Spore of Marasmius (Torghast?)

Ella (Torghast?)
艾拉
Venthyr:
Chachi the Artiste (Renown 44)
艺人查其
Madame Iza (Renown 62)

Lucia (Renown 71)
露西亚

For those trying to target a Torghast companion listed here, the top comment on the
Lloth'wellyn
page has a method that worked for me. In short, run Layer 5, see if there's the Runecarver voiceover for the chained companion, and reset the run if there is not. On larger floors, you may have to wander in a bit.
I would add to this that--with the 9.1 Chains of Domination patch--you want to make sure you have already done
The Box of Many Things
quest. Ve'nish's spawn appears to take priority over covenant companions. Good to know for alts (no 9.1 quest prerequisite is necessary to pick this quest up).

My personal favorite method for finding all the Torghast companions is to go to Upper Reaches, enter the instance, see if new companion is up and reset if not. Upper Reaches has maybe 7 different first floors, some of them cannot have anything special on them, but rest will always have one special event, either rare/treasure/quest/whatever. Why Upper Reaches specifically? Because it has really really small floors, so you can check every possible spot for a special event by killing one pack of mobs at most. It's bit hard to explain but once you start doing it, you very quickly learn the spots.

I have a spreadsheet that computes the likelyhood of a successful mission based upon the health and attack of the companions and troops used for the mission. I found it easier to compute the health and attack values based upon a simple a linear formula than to enter the values manually with each promotion. Because I can do this only for companions I have, that is all I can list here. I will update this as I acquire more companions.

I have to disagree with your overall statement on NF. I have all 4 covenant tables at lvl 60 troop lvl. This comparison I am making assumes you only use one follower per mission. There is no mission on NF that I cannot complete and finish with 100% health. For Necro, Venth, and Kyr there are some missions that are flat out impossible to complete with just a single follower.
The TLDR is NF>>>>Necro>>Vent>>>>>>Kry
If you are making multiple alts for mission table passive income NF>>>>>>>>>all

I get the impression Auric Spiritguide is objectively the best companion for kyrian in a collection that was really weak. It has a massive heal even from level 20. While companions like Mikanikos have big defenses: this one appears to scale to enormous levels of healing as it levels up so I fully expect it to be able to heal even the worst 4 other companions in hard missions.

The best way I found to get companions is from campaign quests
A Paladin's Soul
, chapter 7 of the Chains of Domination campaign if you happen to be on that. The layout is not random and a follower can be either in the very first corridor or the first room. You will only find the 9.1 companions after you got all your 9.0 covenant companions and got
Adventures: Harmony of Purpose
achievement.

Just looked,
乔基斯
actually applies his DOT for 4 rounds and then takes it off the 4th round, attacks normally for 1 round, then applies it again in round 5. The only time it varies is if the front row dies and the back row becomes the "front row", at least in the scenario I saw, it won't apply to the other row until the tick cycle ends. Don't know if this at least ranks him higher in the C section or not haha.

If you are trying to get all the companions from Torghast on an alt, but it seems the RNG hates and and doesn't want to spawn another recruitable one, it helps to log out and log back in.
I have learned that sometimes Torghast likes to be annoying and will refuse to spawn another recruitable companion. If you are spamming level 5 instances or doing the Uther soul instance to grind them, you may end up seeing non-recruitable companion events endlessly. It seems like there is some kind of lockout that will stop recruitable ones from spawning. I just spent an hour going in and out of instances with no luck, but after relogging I immediately got two recruitable companions in a row. I tested this on another alt and it seems to work consistently, like the relogging resets that lockout.

Surely Ashraka would go well with Bonesmith Heirmir.. It seems a waste to put Plaguey in that slot with Heirmir. Even budget Heirmir (Rattlebag) would work, no? Both Ashraka and Rattlebag has a 3 turn cd,, so I assume they line up.
