In Battle for Azeroth, Arcane Mages have received many different changes, ranging from Talent changes to Gameplay and Rotational changes.
While there are many new abilities and spells, there are also returning ones, previously removed during pruning. On top of those spells, the legacy from Legion lives on with different
legendary effects and artifact traits
returning in BfA as talents, baked into the core spec, or are now
azerite traits
, the BfA version of artifact traits. Gameplay changes are also happening, as some abilities and spells that could be used together with others are now
added to the GCD
.
Some Legion systems got reworked, like Honor talents, now active while questing with
War Mode
turned on, which also grants bonuses, like 10% extra experience while leveling.
In this overview, we'll highlight all class abilities, as well as new, changed, or removed talents. Grey to green text indicate changes between
Legion
and the current version of
Battle for Azeroth
; more information can be found by going to the Changelog within the relevant spell page. Keep in mind that information is largely derived from the tooltips, so typographical errors may be intentional to match.

Two of the strongest racial effects have received changes in BfA, with

receiving a new effect and added to the GCD and

having its cooldown increased.
The majority of class cooldowns have been added to the GCD

Abilities that are in the Global Cooldown, or GCD, cannot be used at the same time, meaning you must wait for the default GCD, 1.5s reduced by haste, until you can use your next ability.
Before BfA, many abilities were called "off-GCD" as you could two or more of them at the same time, even in the same button macro. For BfA, Blizzard started to reduce to amount of abilities in this state.
Battle for Azeroth has a huge stat and ilvl squish.
Battle for Azeroth implements the second stat squish for World of Warcraft, two expansions after the
Warlords of Draenor Squish

Unlike Warlords, Battle for Azeroth will also have an item level squish, changing the item level previously found on classic items as well.

Arcane is still built around mana management and a burn/conserve rotation. However, mana costs are significantly higher and our main proc has changed. Instead of enabling the use of

This is an option we've been considering (though nothing specific for next build). It would be a simple and effective talent in its own right. We do like having a talent that preserves the

talent does depend, as people are saying, on whether it can be done without causing rotational problems. Arcane is a rotation that is unusually--for lack of a better word--fragile, so it's always helpful to keep an eye out for issues like this.

It's a real shame what they did to Arcane Mage (as of the beta for the pre-patch), it went from being my main spec to being basically unenjoyable. Fire feels pretty good, and Frost seems a bit better, but arcane just feels like all the changes just made things more boring and less clear (despite clearcasting).
Arcane Explosion and Arcane Missiles feel relatively irrelevant due to how little damage they seem to do, and mana is now way less of a factor it seems, so the mastery is basically not an issue unless you stack your haste real high.
Hopefully we still get a change before the pre-patch later this week, but I'm not terribly hopeful
Also, Time Anomaly could use to make a slightly less annoying sound

I always thought it would be amazing if arcane's niche was to be the best at snap dps on adds or during sudden burn phases. No other spec can decide to ramp up damage as quickly without dps cooldowns. Though arcane would need some sort of short-term positive mana rotation outside of Evocation to manage more burns.
Though instead of doubling down on the Arcane Charge system and giving arcane more tools to handle the agency of its rotation, they took two of its main abilities off the charge system. This leaves only two abilities that care at all about charges, leaving Arcane as a pretty hollow spec with no real identity besides a shallow corpse of the "use mana as damage" theme that could have been so much more.

Posting it here, since very few people seem to care about forum feedback.
Arcane is NOT VIABLE SPEC RIGHT NOW as for 8.0.1
. Not viable for single target, not viable for AoE, not viable for Mythic, not viable for really anything that requires 1) real DPS 2) movement 3) AoE. For SOME REASON Blizzard ignored literally 5 months of forum feedback, all pointing out that BFA Arcane design is broken. All the devs seemed to hear was "Arcane, Missiles, Slipstream, Explosion, Overpowered" and so they nerfed every single thing in that sentence, while problems that needed fixing are still here.
Arcane Missiles damage is so low it's not worth casting unless you regen mana. Clearcasting does not give them enough juice to even slightly compete with Blast. It's back to Cataclysm, where the only real DPS spell was Arcane Blast and no one would ever cast Missiles, unless in conserve phase or OOM. Problems with Legion Missiles were 1) you could get 3 stacks of Missiles proc before 4 Arcane Charges and 2) considered unbalanced because mage could do a lot of damage with 3 casts in PvP. Simple, proposed a lot of times, solution to stacks - Charged Up moved from talents to spells so if you have 3 stacks then you can instantly fire them, not wasting procs on ramping charges up with Blast. Or make it so that 3-stacked Missiles behave as if you had 4 charges in PvE. Or casting Arcane Power with 3 Missiles stacks active grants you 4 charges. PvP balancing is another story, but here's a clue - for Blizzard, when 2 guys fight each other, one of them thrown into ground seems to be definition of balance. Seriously, Arcane spec was MADE for bursting and balanced around having high dps on burst phase and low dps on recovery phase, so it averaged to okay dps. Why take it away? Because hypermobile melee monkeys like DH or Monks cried that there is still something out there than can run away from them and keep firing? Hunters were doing it since start of the game...
Slipstream was considered unbalanced in PvP, so solution would be nerfing it a bit in PvP environment, like giving it slight cooldown, right? Wrong! That's common sense reasoning, not Blizzard reasoning. Blizzard reasoning goes at follows: NERF IT INTO THE GROUND RIGHT NOW! NO PRISONERS! And so Arcane goes to be THE turret spec, worse than Elemental Shaman, with only unreliable Clearcasting for movement, or castable while casting Shimmer that has 2 charges, but 15s cd. Any movement in encounter, like on Mythic? You're not viable. 1 charge is just so STUPID for caster - ABC - Always Be Casting and plan 1 spell ahead because wrong spell is better than no spell. PvP talents don't fix that.
Clearcasting is not fun. It's "Free Arcane Blast" proc. Missiles mean 2s moving but dps loss. Stacking to 3 from PvP talents won't help it. "1 spell free" Clearcasting would be okay and Slipstream back from Legion where it was actually useful. Want to move a bit, then fire Missiles, and back to Blast charging/procced Missiles for dps.
Arcane Explosion was our main AoE ability and the only one doing worthwhile damage. And it was good. With 14y radius thanks to Aluneth traits, mage could stand relatively safe from melee monsters and still hit them. Again, considered unbalanced in PvP. Why? Because instant cast, 14y range seems too much for these melee types again. These melee types that have 15y (if not 30...) range interrupts and some "melee" abilities with 15-20y range. Cuz, ya know, if they can stop your cast, it's balanced, but if you can hit them without being interrupted, it's unbalanced. Common sense solution: 1) reduce Explosion radius a bit in PvP, 2) change it so it generates charges only when hitting say 3+ targets because it's designed to be AoE not single target, 3) make it so it benefits from charges, but only for said 3+ targets, so it can't be used to nuke 1 target. Blizzard solution: take it off charges and make mana cost sky high. Meaning Arcane is THE ONLY SPEC IN GAME that CAN'T SUSTAIN AOE ROTATION. No amount of random charge procs can fix it. You try to AoE, you do low damage and go oom. You try to dps single target+barrage cleave, you do low damage and get kicked. Not viable either way.
Overpowered was as it name says and no mage would ever take anything else, because it was too strong, and THAT should be fixed. Common sense solution: 1) move it from talents to spells, name it Arcane Power Rank 2, like other spells that you get early and get better effects while leveling, and create something that could compete with Temporal Flux, 2) remove mana cost reduction from it, making mana more important and not non-issue while bursting.
Stacking % damage modifiers is beneficial for burst window based spec, so here goes another problem - Rune of Power needs to go. It's turret talent that anchors you to 16y wide circle where you have to stay or lose dps, it has 2 charges but lasts only 10s, and has a cast time. Meaning you had to take Arcane Power prolonging relics or you risked having one buff, but not other, netting dps loss. And now Arcane Power lasts 10s. Rune 10s too. AP is on GCD, so really 8,5s, Rune has cast time close to GCD, so again dps loss, and more RNG dependency - these 4 spells you fire off crit, you're good, they don't crit, you suck. Oh, and with Slipstream and Missiles nerfed, you basically can't move for 10 seconds window, and if you squeeze Clearcasting Missiles, you lose dps anyway. Good luck trying to burst all these "get outta fire NOW" encounters. Solution: remove Rune of Power talent, which isn't competing with others anyway because it is too good, remove Incanter's Flow, increase Arcane damage by about 15-20%. Incanter's Flow averaged to 12% dmg, which was considered acceptable loss for move encounters and PvP, but it was still loss so damage needed to be increased a bit more.
Arcane Power was NERFED INTO USELESSNESS. Not going to dance around that. 10 seconds from about 14s base. And GCD eats 1,5s right away. Meaning 8,5s "burst" and 1:21,5 waiting for it. 4 spells. Seriously 4 spells ONCE PER ONE MINUTE AND A HALF decide about your dps. Hope you spilled a lot of innocent blood as sacrifice to RNGesus so he likes you. Meaning CATASTROPHICALLY LOW BURST UPTIME ON BURST BASED SPEC. Meaning you're not viable for anything serious thanks to fatality combo of stat squish, removal of Artifact traits, and nerfs sold with "Changes" label. Solutions: TAKE IT OFF GCD RIGHT NOW, 15 seconds base duration, 30-80% damage buff depending on other changes, and no mana cost reduction. Short DPS cooldowns on GCD make SOME sense when they're really strong for MELEE CLASSES because they hit things anyway even when not pushing buttons. It makes no sense for direct damage casters because when they're not casting, they're not doing damage. And it makes absolutely no sense AT ALL for Arcane with its burst-conserve design. 10s window of "real damage" and 80s period of "basically the same damage as tank" is NOT fun. It does not average to okay fun dps. It averages to low dps, not fun, and sub loss because hands up who wants to have fun for 1/9 playtime?
Short version: A REAL LOT of changes in Arcane NEED to be reverted. Certain things STILL need to be fixed because they weren't. Or certain company is going to wake up YET AGAIN after massive sub loss suffered thanks to burst (the irony) of rushed unfixed expansion changes. And no Illidan in glass to save it this time.
