What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. For more information on available Essences and the drop locations for each rank, see our
Heart of Azeroth Essences Overview Guide
.
Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any
type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our
Essence Calculator
.

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Best Guardian Druid Major Essences
While only one Major power can be used at a time, whichever Essence is socketed into the center node of the Heart of Azeroth will also activate its Minor Power, so both effects should be taken into consideration when determining which to use. Below is a short ranking of notable Top Tier, Mid Tier, and Bottom or strictly Situational Tier Major Essences you should consider using when playing a Guardian Druid. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.
Top tier essences are those that you will absolutely want to have at your disposal. They provide best in class performance in their particular roles, and should be the priority for obtaining at Rank 3.

Rank 1: Complete a +4 Mythic dungeon in season 3.
Rank 2: Complete a +7 Mythic dungeon in season 3.
Rank 3: Combine 15

Rank 4: Complete
.
Use for: A well-rounded Mythic+ setup (both damage and survivability)
This effect is similar to
, with the downside that it must hit more than one target to be a net gain in health. It is however a very potent damage effect (that synergizes well with our
due to its max health scaling) and one of the only essences that does not deal split damage against multiple targets. This essence is very strong offensively, and also serves as a potent on-demand heal.
The minor effect is not noteworthy and has a negligible impact on performance. It will however be an acceptable option for open world content as you will be able to stack the buff much faster by killing various mobs in the open world.
Effect on gameplay
Use during large pulls in Mythic+ when you need a quick top-up or to catch up in threat on pull.

Rank 3: Neck level 60 and

Rank 4: Neck level 70 and

Use for: Single target damage
This essence is our strongest single target DPS ability. Notably, you can cast the heal on yourself, but it does not heal nearly enough to be useful.
Effect on gameplay
Use on cooldown.

Use for: Everything else
Provides a burst of Rage generation that applies to every source of Rage; from your own auto attacks, from incoming auto attacks, from the talents
and
, from all abilities, and even the refunded Rage granted by this essence's own minor effect (effectively giving you a full refund when it procs). This is a very strong general purpose essence that will significantly boost available Rage throughout a fight.
As mentioned, the minor effect has a chance to refund half the cost (or the full cost if the major is active during a proc) of any Rage-spending ability. Ideally this gets used on an
or
, but it is possible to have it proc on
and get a smaller refund. Note that any cost-reduction effects will reduce the refund; for example, if you have a stack of
and
costs 25 Rage, a proc will refund 13 Rage.
In terms of damage output, you may have trouble spending all the additional Rage using only
, as it is on the global cooldown. In this case it is recommended that you have at least one
so that you can dump excess Rage (and avoid overcapping) into
for a small offensive benefit instead.
Effect on gameplay
Use in anticipation of a large physical damage hit in order to build up a large Ironfur stack (similar to how one would use
), or whenever a burst of Rage is convenient (for example, when off-tanking in order to cast more
s for additional damage.

Rank 3: Complete the mission chain starting with "A Disturbing Rumor".
Rank 4: Complete a specific

Worldvein Resonance, got very buffed in the patch now granting 300% Primary stat gain from Lifeblood shards meaning around ~4500 primary stat on use every 1 minute, this will give us a large amount of dodge and armor on call and help us tremendously.
-

Rank 1: Defeat King Mechagon.
Rank 2:

.
Rank 3: Combine 4
, dropped by King Mechagon.
Rank 4: Obtain
.
Use for: Ease of use, general purpose
This essence activates
, even if you don't have it talented. It isn't the strongest effect available, but it does add a fun and interesting spin that can spice up your rotation, and is entirely passive for those who don't want the hassle of dealing with an extra button or drastically changing their rotation to juggle a buff. This is generally only used as a Major in M+ due to the strong defensive interaction with
.
Effect on gameplay
The essence itself is a passive effect, however while
is active you will want to execute your rotation as if you had it talented. Refer to the
Rotation Guide
for more details, but essentially you'll be spamming
on up to 4 targets, and
otherwise.
Mid tier essences either provide a specific situational use, or are weaker than the top tier essences but make suitable alternatives.
-
Source: Horrific Visions of N'zoth (click for details!)
Rank 1: Thrall or Alleria's Cursed Chests.
Rank 2: Corrupted Chests from the Lost Areas
Rank 3: Corrupted Chests from the Corrupted and Lost Areas
Rank 4: Obtain
.
Use for: AoE Taunt
This essence Taunts all nearby enemies, forcing them to attack you for 6 seconds, and increases your dodge chance by 15% for 6 seconds. Targets affect by this taunt take 50% while its active.
Effect on gameplay
This can be great for m+ skittish weeks and the minor aspect is very strong defensively.
-
Source: Ny'alotha Raid (click for details!)
Rank 1: Collect Encrypted Ny'alothan Texts in the Raid.
Rank 2: Collect Encrypted Ny'alothan Texts in the Raid.
Rank 3: Collect Encrypted Ny'alothan Texts in the Raid.
Rank 4: N'zoth Mythic Drop.
Use for: Situationally very strong, for example borrowing
on a large aoe pack
This essence replicates your targets Major slotted Heart of Azeroth essence, including the DPS only ones and Healer only ones, you have 15 seconds to use the essence and it will go on cooldown for 30% longer than the essence used. Does not work on passives.
Effect on gameplay
This is such a cool essence and may see quite a lot of use depending how strong some of the essences are in certain situations.
The minor is very strong for DPS and also gives a bonus 10 Corruption Resistance.
-
Source: Reputation Rajani (click for details!)
Rank 1: Complete Quest
Rank 2: First of the week Vision of Darkness
Rank 3: Rajani - Exalted
Rank 4: Rajani - Paragon Cache
Use for: Cheat Death
This essence is a Cheat Death for tanks, Your next deat his prevented, and you instead regenerate to 40% of your max health and take 85% reduced damage for 3 seconds. When your death is prevented, gain a charge of Survival Instincts, cannot occur more than once per 10 minutes.
Effect on gameplay
The essence itself is a passive effect and may very well see some prog time, the minor is not very good but it is a strong cheat death and if you are particularly worried about dying at a certain point this is the one for you.
-
Source: Rustbolt Resistance Reputation (click for details!)
Rank 1: Honored, purchase for 4
and 2
.
Rank 2: Revered, purchase for 20
and 10
.
Rank 3: Exalted, purchase for 40
and 10
.
Rank 4: Rustbolt Resistance Paragon cache.
Use for: Dispelling debuffs
The absorb from this essence is not amazing, since its base value is quite low and it only works against magic damage.
The self-dispel however is very useful in certain situations. Especially in dungeon content where there are many debuffs that can and should be dispelled, having a catch-all dispel available gives you an additional tool in your kit to work with.
Effect on gameplay
Use when you need to dispel one or more harmful effects on you that you or your healer are not able to dispel with your own toolkit.
-
Source: PvP - Conquest (click for details!)
Rank 1: Earn 500 Conquest and claim a weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 2: Reach 1,000 Rating in Rated PvP and claim your next weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 3: Collect
from your weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 4: Reach Elite rank and claim your next weekly PvP War Chest.
Use for: AoE DPS alternative
Activates
in all content, including PvE instances and out in the world with War Mode is turned off. Provided you can maintain sufficient uptime on the buff by casting
frequently, The trade-off is that the GCD you lose casting the Maul instead of swipe negates majority of the value and in order to cast Maul that frequently, you will lose significant defensive power since you will no longer be spending Rage on
s as often.
There is some synergy between this essence and the Azerite power
, since you'll be casting
much more frequently than normal.
Effect on gameplay
If you have this essence slotted, you will want to cast
whenever the buff is not up or is about to expire (if you can afford it), and then cast
and
as often as you can while the buff is up. If possible, only use
when there are fewer than 2 targets or when the buff is not up and you don't have enough Rage to cast
immediately.

Rank 3:

Rank 4:

Use for: Melee damage reduction, kiting in Mythic+
The slow applied by this essence is quite strong, but has significant utility overlap with our own toolkit:
and
both fill the same role of creating space between you and the enemy, allowing you to drop form and cast a heal, or for your healer to catch up.
The secondary effect this essence applies, a 25% attack speed slow, is a significant damage reduction (effectively 25%) against enemies that mostly auto attack, making this essence a strong defensive cooldown against many dungeon packs.
Effect on gameplay
Use to slow enemies around you to create space in order to heal yourself, or to reduce incoming melee damage.
-
Source: Azshara's Eternal Palace (click for details!)
Rank 1: Combine 9
.
Rank 2: Combine 18
.
Rank 3: Combine 27
.
Rank 4: Defeat Queen Azshara on Mythic difficulty.
Use for: Raid encounters with deadly tankbuster mechanics in raids
This essence gives a huge damage reduction for a short period of time on a very short cooldown. It will be incredibly powerful for soaking certain boss mechanics, and potentially cheesing others. It does however have quite a short duration and is not very strong as a general purpose damage reduction.
The minor effect is also quite strong as a near-death survivability boost, and the buff will persist even after you are healed above 35% health.
Effect on gameplay
Use in a defensive cooldown rotation to supplement a gap between
charges, or stack with other defensives to survive an otherwise unsurvivable hit.
Due to its very short duration, good timing is very important when using this essence. Be sure to use it immediately before a hit connects and damage is taken.
Bottom tier essences are much weaker than the alternatives and provide little or no specific utility. A very compelling reason would be needed to select one of these essences over another choice on the list.

This essence has an extremely niche effect. It may be used as part of a raid encounter strategy, but outside of that it is not recommended for general purpose use.
Best Guardian Druid Minor Essences
Two additional Minor Essence slots can be unlocked over time, providing additional benefit. While the above rankings already detailed several minor bonuses, the rankings below consider only the Minor or how it might interact when using it alongside a different Major Essence. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.
Unless otherwise stated, the effect each Minor Essence has on gameplay is entirely passive.
-
Use for: Defensive purposes
Another passive effect; as long as you are spending Rage, a portion of it (preliminary testing puts it at 15% chance on every spender) will be refunded to you. This results in an average of 7.5% more Rage available.
Effect on gameplay
Passive, however you may want to keep an eye on your Rage pool so that you don't overcap after a streak of lucky procs.
-
Use for: Defensive purposes
A very strong defensive minor essence doing up to 10-20% of our healing overall and completely passive.
-
Use for: Offensive purposes
More beautiful agility for us with 100% up-time and good worldvein synergy.
-
Versatility is our strongest defensive stat and offensive stat so this minor is amazing and even if you are not a regular pvper, this is well worth to farm conquest cap each week for.
-
Use for: Magic damage ecounters
This essence's minor effect is also a passive version of its major effect and at rank 3 it gets a gigantic buff in damage making this our highest damage minor essence, without rank 3 do not use unless it is very heavy magic damage and you are having trouble surviving. This is an extremely powerful minor essence and should be prioritized if you are a raider.
-
Use for: Defensive power in dungeons
Provided you are surrounded by several enemies, this grants a large amount of Versatility, our strongest defensive stat, which doubles at low health. The heal is small but roughly equivalent to the healing you would get from
.
-
Use for: If your raid asks you to and you feel nice
This is an entirely passive effect that grants a significant amount of Agility (roughly 240 per shard at 450 item level). If more than 5 players in your group are also using a Worldvein minor, their shards count towards your total as well, and you will easily be able to hit the maximum stacks with high uptime.
-
Use for: Utility in dungeons
The minor is more or less a passive but worse version of the major effect of this essence. The same use cases for kiting apply to the minor effect. Additionally, the Haste buff, while small, is sustainable at 100% uptime as long as you are taking melee hits.
-
The minor max health gain is not very valuable on its own, takes a long time to reach maximum stacks, and the heal once at max stacks is negligible.
-
Use for: Physical damage reduction
Discussed briefly in the Major section, but this essences provides a signficant boost to your Armor when you are brought to low health, potentially preventing a death.
-
Use for: Cooldown reduction
Vision's minor, in a somewhat confusing distinction from its major, reduces the cooldown of
instead of
, even if you have it talented.
The cooldown reduction stacks with
, resulting in a final cooldown of 2:01, nearly half of the original cooldown. The combination of the two is one of the strongest defensive effects available by allowing you to nearly double your uptime of
over the course of a dungeon or raid encounter. Without Survival of the Fittest however, this minor essence is quite underwhelming.
The 5% heal on activation is insignificant and has no impact on the value of this essence.
-
Provides around a 3-5% dps boost as a minor, generally outclassed by other minors.
-
Use for: Exercise those bear legs
In order to proc this essence, you must travel at least 25 yards in any direction (it cannot be activated by rapidly sidestepping back and forth). Fortunately, this can be achieved at normal movement speed, making it easy to activate in most dungeons. The buff also grants a large amount of Agility at a reasonably high uptime. Unfortunately running around 25 yards every 30 seconds is not that viable or great for tanks and your group might not like the mobs running around.
Effect on gameplay
Every 30 seconds, make sure you re-activate the buff by running 25 yards.
Recommended Essence Setup

I haven't read the whole content but I absolutely loved how it is presented (the format). Cheers to Wowhead folks and thanks for this section's author.

There is a mistake in the mid/tier of minor power. You name Aegis of the deep but the link is not the correct one.
Also when you are recommending the 4 setups for raiding and mythic + you are also links are not correct. You are giving a hard times to those that are trying to find
虚无粹源
when they should be looking for
虚无屏障
. The same happens with
世界血脉共鸣
, it should be
源血
. Same goes for
清醒梦境之忆
that should be
清醒梦境
. You could even just name the essences for each recommendation and call Major and minors since at the game you are choosing escenses and not every single minor spell.
This naming mistakes also appear on each category on the Minor esscence power. Nearly every single name in that section is wrong. You are not even linking the names in that part and I could assume you are not doing it because it's liking the spell ID and not the name but since you are not linking, you could at least place the correct information. (After reviewing my comment, I can say that the links are linking correctly and doesn't seem to be a problem)
This mistakes only makes the guide to be less comprehensible and ends up taking more time for the readers to realize what they need to do.

Nice for non-PUG folks who care about + or high-end raiding. I could care less. Four perspectives: RAID 1, RAID 2, RAID 3! Oh, and Mythic+. I don't care. What about BGs? I hate arenas, but what about those?

Also, linking the generic: gibberish as a mouseover isn't at all helpful for Conflict and Strife on ANY of your pages.

I would like to know the ideal setup for essences for general all around use as a DPS bear since i can do far more damage than my cat lol. Any recommendations on essence setup?

Im a tank and i really dont see why "T
he Formless Void
" is higher priority then "Aegis of the Deep" combines with "Nullification Dynamo" as Minor
and Vision of Perfection as Main for Raid.
The list seems abit of, i see Formless void as a weaker choice as u lost that survival, versatility grants over what formless give u.
PRIMARY:
Vision of Perfection
Minor 1: Conflict and Strife
Minor 2: Nullification Dynamo
Minor 3: Aegis of the Deep
Questionable: The Formless Void
That is my Primary + Minors for raid/M+... mind give your feedback why i would change?

For Visions, why is formless void mentioned? Does it work if you're going solo?
