Welcome to Wowhead's Retribution Paladin Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we will cover each Covenant and its viability for Retribution Paladins. We explain the usefulness of each Covenant to a Retribution Paladin in PvP, allowing you to make the best decision for your PvP playstyle. Recommendations for Soulbinds will be explored for each Covenant.

Soulbinds
Soulbinding is a new progression system that allows you to bind yourself to a significant member of your Covenant and share some of their power. Each Covenant has three potential Soulbind options with unique bonuses which can be powered up through a Soulbind tree. As you gain Renown with your Covenant, more rows of your Soulbind tree will be unlocked. Conduits add further possibility for customization, filling empty sockets with one of three bonus types. Conduits
Conduits are available in three types; Potency, Endurance, and Finesse. Potency Conduits increase your spell power, Endurance Conduits provide additional defense, and Finesse Conduits provide you with additional utility. Some Conduits are the same across classes but some are specific to your class. For more information on Conduits, click here.
Potency

is broken if you're Kyrian. This can proc between 1 and 3 extra Judgements. If you proc 3 while your cooldowns are rolling, your target is dead.
In 9.05 this has been hotfixed to a maximum of 2 extra procs and the damage has been nerfed by 33%. These adjustments are still in the game as of 9.1.
This still deals a large amount of bust damage but the other conduits are more consistent and are worth considering if you're Kyrian.

This is strong with Blade of Wrath, Zeal, and a high amount of Critical Strike - but Crit is our "worst" stat. It isn't exactly bad, we just don't go for it over the others...

Adds guaranteed damage to your hardest hitting ability but it's under-tuned right now. I've never seen it account for more than 1% of my damage and it's a shame because this is the conduit we get from the PvP vendor.
Finesse
圣光骑甲
is decent. We're desperate for mobility so I default to this.
回响祝福
at low levels isn't great but at 226 it becomes a good choice.
牺牲祝福
becomes very strong with the additional damage reduction and the movement speed is a nice bonus, especially with the Unbound Freedom PvP talent.
Swap into a path with
纯粹专注
against fear specs (Priest, Warlock, Warrior).
扭转邪恶
is very good against Unholy Death Knights and Warlocks to fear their pets. This can create an opportunity for your team to cast while the Fel Hunter is feared and it can help shutdown pressure from empowered pets.
Endurance

is very good, make sure you have one of these.

is the best second choice but it's bad at low ranks. At max rank, combined with

, Bubble can get close to a 2.5 minute cooldown.
皇家法令
is excellent combined with

. Yes, you get a free WoG if the legendary procs and yes it works for Ret currently!
Covenants
Covenants are a key part of the Shadowlands expansion. Selecting a Covenant gives you access to exclusive abilities - one that is Covenant-wide, and one that is specific to your class. You will also be given a choice of Soulbinds to enhance your power. For more information on Covenants, click here.
My Personal Retribution PvP Covenant Rankings:
#1/2 is Kyrian
#1/2 is Necrolord
#3 is Night Fae
#4 is Venthyr
Kyrian and Necrolord are very close now. Kyrian is strong simply due to the amount of damage

. The Judgements hit twice as hard as a regular Judgement!
If you get procs from Ringing Clarity this button can easily deal 15k-20k damage as well as buff your next finisher by 25% and give you maximum Holy Power most of the time.
I believe Necrolord and to a lesser extent Night Fae have an edge in certain matchups in 3v3 over Kyrian.
Necrolord is by far the strongest defensive Covenant choice.

's free Divine Storm can hit quite hard! This ability is also available every 30 seconds which will line up with every Hammer of Justice! Additionally, if you build around this, you can achieve extremely high burst thanks to

buffing both finishers. I have hit over 30k in one GCD with this combo in 9.1.
Night Fae's

is an excellent mobility option and if you get lucky, the burst from

can net you ~15% damage on your burst (or as little as 1%-5% if you're unlucky). Most of the time, Details showed it doing 8%-10% of my damage in quick games.
Venthyr synergizes well with

allowing very strong ranged damage during Ashen Hallow but unfortunately it is rather easy for opponents to kite away from it, leaving it rather useless.
Best Covenant for Retribution Paladin in PvP
This section will discuss the factors that come into play when choosing a Covenant, noting the strengths and weaknesses of each. Covenants will be discussed here. There is no best Covenant, the best will depend on what you're doing (Battleground vs Arena) and "the best" in arena will be completely matchup dependent.
The #1 overall covenant for Damage right now is Kyrian due to the conduit option

bringing very strong damage, even post-nerf. As mentioned earlier, Necrolord is a close #2 and provides defensive advantages over Kyrian.
The new Legendaries have not affected my rankings, but if you wanted to be a Venthyr but chose not to because the ability was useless if people ran away, that is now not nearly as punishing as the legendary compensates. Venythyr may not be the strongest pick but it is more competitive than it was before.
If you were on the edge for trying Necrolord, I think it's a little stronger this patch than it was before due to the Legendary so give it a whirl!
Changing Covenants - Factors to Consider
First to mention the 9.2 changes, the absorb Fleshcraft grants was reduced from 30% to 25%. I do not think any of the new Legendaries are strong enough to make it worth switching covenants for but they are all excellent in their own regard, especially if you're a Venthyr player who wants to try some Rated PvP. Having Ashen Hallow available on your next wings if people run away from it was really necessary to make it more useful in PvP.
As I've mentioned, Necrolord is very competitive with Kyrian this patch in PvP and they're looking to be even stronger in 9.2 as the Covenant legendries for both of these Covenants are very strong. When considering which Covenant to choose this patch, keep in mind the following:
Kyrian's biggest strengths for Ret is the on-demand Holy Power generation and burst via
圣洁鸣钟
and
明澈之音
. It has good defensive options as well, but really we're here for the big Judgements with Kyrian.
Necrolord deals respectable burst every 30 seconds via
征服者之锤
but its strengths lay in its use of
终极形态
to immune CC and

.
Nightfae is worth considering mainly for its
灵魂变形
. The blessings are not as strong for damage as other choices but it has strong soulbind options and
阳春祝福
is a good defensive cooldown.
I still don't have much of a reason to recommend Venthyr except if you have one of the legendries that buff Hammer of Wrath and you want to do some big ranged damage. The Covenant legendary is very interesting so in 9.2 we may see more Rets opt to try Venthyr.

Class Covenant Ability -

This is big damage and provided on-demand Holy Power generation. If you want to min-max this, make sure to consider that it will debuff your targets and cause your next Finisher to deal more damage. Sometimes, a quick tab-finisher combo can take someone who's already low out.
Recommended Path
While levelling up your Renown, make sure to use
明澈之音
in the first Potency slot until you have the bottom Potency slot unlocked.
Factors to Consider
Following my chart, if you're using
无尽列王之御
you'll want to swap into that path. I swap the Legendary in from matchup to matchup. Otherwise I take the mobility, but you can change this to your preference.
You're going to want to swap in
纯粹专注
against teams where your team is going to sit a lot of Fear effects.
明澈之音
is absolutely insane right now and can randomly 1-shot people
is strong burst post-nerf. This is still absolutely worth the potency slot post-nerf.
Each
圣洁鸣钟
will no longer trigger
秩序之源
. Only the primary target of
圣洁鸣钟
will get
秩序之源
applied. This is very strong damage. During the Shadowlands Beta,
圣洁鸣钟
would apply
秩序之源
to everyone hit, but this is no longer the case.
The usefulness of
静谧之瓶
is very matchup-dependent. In particular, removing bleeds against Feral Druids is very strong.
Soulbind - Pelagos
The 350 Mastery for 10 seconds
is nerfed by 50% however it lasts twice as long.
崭新决心
is strong but keep in mind it is a rare proc (about once per minute) and you have to make eye contact with it by rotating your character towards it. This is going to make it less useful in Arena since it won't always be possible to grab it and it's relatively rare but it's also so rewarding. Getting one of these buffs is going to net you ~10% damage and the extra stamina will make your Shield of Vengeance and Phial stronger.
The conduit placement on this chart is very particular.
Swap into the

path against teams with lots of Fears.
Swap into
皇家法令
if you equip the Prot Legendary.

is incredibly strong.
Soulbind - Kleia
Largely untested by me but the Valiant Strikes looks incredibly powerful for team sustainability. Ascendant Phil can be used to immune Hex. In my opinion, since Ret has strong off-healing , there is no need to use Kleia. Pelagos and Mikanikos are both extremely strong options and I would recommend either of them instead.
Soulbind - Mikanikos
Swapping into

against Rogue teams is excellent until they catch onto it and leave you standing there. There are really cool knockback options here as well, but effectiveness is map and positioning dependent.

Playing as a Necrolord Retribution Paladin in PvP
Signature Covenant Ability -

This is probably why you're Necrolord. This is a very strong defensive cooldown can also immune CC with Ultimate Form! You can use Seraphim in the starting gates to make it slightly stronger.
Class Covenant Ability -

With 9.1.5 buffs this can hit a lot harder but more importantly make your finisher much stronger. It is not as much damage as Divine Toll with Ringing Clarity however it is usable every 30 seconds as opposed to every 1 minute and is guaranteed damage where as Ringing Clarity is RNG.

Factors to Consider
Necrolord is my favourite Covenant for Retribution Paladin and I believe it's incredibly underrated. Some of the strongest survival options reside here and the burst provided by

is strong.
As of 9.1.5, Necrolord is on par with Kyrian this time around in my opinion. It no longer lacks damage which was holding it back before. Which covenant is truly best varies from matchup to matchup and can depend on which composition you run yourself. Fleshcraft immuning CC has many game-changing use cases like Fleshcrafting a stun or a Warrior's Intimidating Shout.
The absorb is still huge and makes the ability a much more appealing defensive cooldown. If you're playing the strongest Ret comp, Ret Warrior, you can get a full Fleshcraft off when your warrior intervines. This is because Intervine will eat any melee interrupts. Although risky, you can also bait interrupts with your Holy School or vice versa; you may be able to spam flash of light of someone uses their interrupt on your Fleshcraft. These are subtle things but can easily change the pace in a game.
Swap into your finesse conduits as described in the Kyrian section if you can use the Turn Evil or Pure Concentration conduits. This can be setup to optimize whatever comp you play, so feel free to customize it to your preference. You should be swapping talents and conduit paths depending on what matchup you have.
New from 9.1 but still relevant:

now provides 12% damage for 15 seconds.
This is very strong but a bit of a pain to use. The first time you hit a target lasts until you logout so you're going to have to logout every game or at least every so-often.
Together with the new 120 Mastery you get from
不稳定的溶液
(~5% Holy damage) and

, you're going to have up to 23% more damage to your target! This is
massive!
Soulbind - Marileth

is very strong and so is

. There are so many opportunities to immune CC. All of those Wizards casting on you while you're rooted, or maybe it's obvious you're going to get cross CCed...now you have a way to counter it!
Soulbind - Emeni

is really powerful for surviving!

makes channeling much easier as a melee. This can save your life!
Soulbind - Heirmir
Excellent mount speed (which affects Divine Steed!) and movement speed options.

is a lot of fun too but its usefulness is limited in arena. This choice more tailored to Battleground and World PvP.
Playing as a Night Fae Retribution Paladin in PvP
Signature Covenant Ability -

This makes playing Retribution much less frustrating due to the mobility gaps this closes. Night Fae is a personal favorite of mine because of this ability.
Class Covenant Ability -

This spell always starts with Summer inside instanced PvP so it should be used just before your first Wings. It can net up to 10% damage! The other Blessings are situationally useful. Spring is a good defensive cooldown, Autumn is a good button to have but will only occasionally be game changing. Winter isn't very useful.

Factors to Consider
Retribution lacks consistent damage and mobility. That's what Night Fae brings to the table! I chose Night Fae as my personal choice at the start of Shadowlands however I found the blessing to be too weak compared to the Kyrian and Necrolord abilities.
Being unable to move is the most frustrating situation in the game. There are so many games you could win if you could just hit your target! I believe the extra mobility can really make a difference when used intelligently. Soulshape can aid in disruption (teleport kick, stopping drinks etc.) which is also something we lack. It can also be used as a gap closer and an escape/kiting tool. Pair it with Blessing of Freedom to cross the map in seconds!
Blessing of the Seasons requires forward thinking and split second decisions, so it's harder to use. In 3v3, at the highest level, you will be rotating these blessings on everyone on your team.
仲夏祝福
adds around ~10% to your damage while it's up.
暮秋祝福
takes ~10 seconds off all cooldowns over its duration. This affects
every
ability with a cooldown.
凛冬祝福
is the weakest Season in my opinion but it's still useful if you're against a melee.
阳春祝福
is a powerful defensive cooldown. That's 30% self healing for whoever it's on!
Soulbind - Niya
林地复兴
has very high uptime. The health percentage will help your
复仇之盾
absorb more. It's a strong throughput and defensive option. The Soulshape heal and reduced cooldown are both very useful.

is a nice bonus for landing interrupts!
Soulbind - Dreamweaver

is a pseudo Cheat Death. You cannot use

or do anything else inside of it. This can be okay if your team has a lot of CC to prevent the damage but it shouldn't really be relied on.
Soulbind - Korayn
Very strong - possibly the strongest soulbind out of all of the Covenants. This is thanks to
荒猎团战术
. You're mostly going to be hitting people above 75% health and healing people under 35% health. 10% healing, damage and 15% move speed for doing so is excellent.
The Soulshape stun is only 2 seconds in PvP.
The 5% Mount Speed stacks with Crusader Aura and affects Divine Steed.
坚守阵地
is very strong for surviving openers.
Playing as a Venthyr Retribution Paladin in PvP
Signature Covenant Ability -
暗影之门
Best used for its mobility and you can chain the disorient from
混沌代理人
to land a Repentance, which combined with Hammer of Justice means you can a huge CC chain as Ret!
Class Covenant Ability -
红烬圣土
Very strong but on a 4 minunte cooldown so usually only your first Wings will get this and unfortunately players can run away from this easily. That being said, it can be great in RBGs to control a node or to combo with one of the Hammer of Wrath legendaries to cause a lot of ranged damage!
Recommended Path
Factors to Consider
Venthyr is a great pick for Battlegrounds.

can completely take over nodes, and in arena entire pillars are filled with red. That being said, I feel that this choice is the weak in Arena overall since players can simply move out of the AoE. It's a 4 minute cooldown, so usually only going to get one of these. It's best used defensively in arena or for a couple huge Hammer of Wrath's combined with the legendries.
Playing with a Death Knight and/or Druid in Arena can make this Covenant much stronger!
Soulbind - Nadjia
The 20% Haste proc is incredibly strong. The disorient is only 3 seconds in PvP but it's still useful and you can combo this into a

or out of one. The reduced root/snare duration is also good!
Soulbind - Theotar
525 Mastery is insane but it's RNG and you have to stand under the umbrella. Door of Shadows clearing roots or having two charges is strong.
Soulbind - Draven
This is a wild Soulbind. I cannot wait until I see
岩石效命
kill someone. Huge turnaround potential! Find yourself a Death Knight friend to have fun with this!

can save your life,

affects Divine Steed, and all of the options at the bottom of the tree are exceptional. A great Soulbind.
