Welcome to Wowhead's Returning Player Guides! With these guides, our intention is to help players that have quit in the past to better situate themselves with the new systems and mechanics of Warcraft. This one guide, in particular, is focused on players that have stopped playing back in Vanilla WoW, before there were any expansions to the game. WoW has changed drastically ever since, both improving existing concepts and creating new ones, all of which you can check below, but, in essence, it is still the same game that defined a generation of MMO players!

Ever since Classic WoW, not only the world of Azeroth has gone through many changes, World of Warcraft accounts have gone through them as well. Now, in order of play World of Warcraft, every player must have a Battle.net account, which is home to all your Blizzard games. Worry not! Races
All races available in Vanilla have since received new models, with an updated polygon count, and look much more current, while keeping their cartoonish feel we all know and love. In addition to this, many new customization options have been added in Shadowlands, making the races feel much more diverse.
In addition to this, you can now customize characters at any time in-game for a small amount of gold! Capital cities now have barber shops where you can change your character appearance at any time.

are uncorrupted Eredar, seeking a new place to stay after fleeing their home planet, Draenor, where they were being mass slaughtered by fel-corrupted Orcs. They crash-landed in Azeroth at

After being nearly eliminated from Azeroth by the invasion, the tainted Sunwell that they relied upon for nourishment was destroyed, and the race was left weak and despondent without them. They sworn allegiance to the Horde after being considered equals, after the defeat of a scourge leader still present in Quel'Thalas.

are the humans from the nation of Gilneas, whom finally emerged from their exile behind the Greymane Wall after it's destruction due to the Cataclysm. An ancient curse has befelled them, transforming its denizens into feral worgen and eventually losing their minds. On their starting zone experience, they discover a cure for their curse, and can now freely change between their Worgen and Human forms when not in combat. With the help of the Alliance, Worgen have restabilished themselves back up.

Cartel is a sect of Goblins whom went through a series of devastating events during Cataclysm: The Destruction of their homeland in the Lost Isles, a betrayal from one of their trade princes, and open hostility from the Alliance. They've decided they could no longer maintain neutral relations with the Horde, and decided to join their faction. As a gift of gratitude, they reshaped

is an elusive race, originally hailing from the Pandaren Empire located in the continent of Pandaria. The playable generation of Pandaren hails from the back of

, a humongous turtle that has an entire island on its back. Pandaren start as a neutral race, and have the option to sworn allegiance to either the Alliance or the Horde at the end of their unique starting zone experience.
Pandaren from different factions can communicate with each other by speaking in the Pandaren language.

Allied Races
Starting with Legion, a new set of races was added:
Allied Races
. These are special races that start at level 10 and don't have a starting zone experience. They're not automatically unlocked, needing to go through a few requirements to unlock them, as well as a small quest chain once said requirements are obtained. Those also have
special Heritage Armor
, that can be obtained once reaching level 50 without any paid boosts.

are Draenei who went through a ritual to become infused with the Light, in an effort to aid them in their efforts against the Burning Legion. After thir final victory against the Legion, Lightforged Draenei returned to Azeroth and reunited with their Draenei brethren, together with the Alliance.

is the first mortal to succeed in defying the shadow's whispers, and now she aids this group of elves who nearly gave in to darkness. Alleria has vowed to train these void elves to control the shadows within them and pledge their newfound powers to the Alliance.

are direct descendants of Huln, brave hero from the War of the Ancients. Though the Legion invaded their lands and sowed seeds of distrust between them, the tribes of Highmountain stand united once more. At long last they are ready to venture beyond their sacred mountain and stand beside their kin from Kalimdor, lending their nobility and strength to the mighty Horde.

are the former Night Elves of Suramar, who were isolated from the world for 10,000 years, and grew increasingly dependant on the arcane powers of the Nightwell. To protect this power, the leaders of the Nightborne struck a bargain with the Burning Legion that plunged their kingdom into civil war. After fighting for freedom from their demonic masters, the Nightborne seek allies in the Horde to help them reclaim their place in the world.

Mag'har Orc
s are a group of united clans from alternate universe Draenor. Their Warchief is Grom Hellscream, who famously refused to drink the Blood of Mannoroth in the Warlords of Draenor Cinematic, founded the Iron Horde, and later helped the Alliance and Horde defeat Archimonde. The Horde seeks their help as a way to pay the debt for helping them back in Draenor.

Kul Tiran Humans are brawnier than their mainland cousins, but share a story of fighting wars against the Horde. After the turmoil resulted from the death of then Lord Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, Kul Tiras had seceded from the then Alliance of Lordaeron, but this turmoil has since been mended, and Kul Tiras, as well as their fearsome fleet, now hail the colors of the Alliance once more.

s are a subsection of the troll race hailing from the ancient and golden kingdom of Zandalar. With the blessing of the loas, the Zandalari possess one of the most fearsome fleets in all of Azeroth. Starting with an uneasy alliance, the Zandalari Trolls have finally joined the Horde after the fall of their most recent ruler at the hands of the Alliance sieging their capital.

机械侏儒
s are a group of gnomes that set out on a quest to improve their minds and bodies. Settling on the isolated isle of Mechagon, they experimented with ancient technology to reverse the Curse of Flesh and become living machines. After facing the perils of full mechanization, they found the ideal balance between flesh and steel. Now reunited with their gnomish cousins and even helping save thje High Tinker of the gnomes from death, the mechagnomes bring both tenacity and ingenuity to the Alliance.

s are a group of nomadic fox people, native to the deserts of Vol'dun. Hardened by generations of living in the harsh desert, they are incredibly resourceful, being able to live and thrive on any climates. After a struggle against the serpentine Sethrak race, who wanted to take any Vulpera they could as slaves, the Vulpera are eager to join the ranks of the Horde, departing with their caravans in search of adventure.
Capital City:
Although nomadic in nature, the Vulpera Hideaway in

serves as the closest thing to a capital city.

are masters of bare-handed combat. When the Pandaren were subjugated by the Mogu centuries ago, it was the Monks that brought hope to a seemingly dim future. Restricted from using weapons by their slave masters, these Pandaren instead focused on harnessing their chi and learning weaponless combat. When the opportunity for revolution struck, they were well-trained to throw off the yoke of oppression.

Leveling
Leveling experience has received significant changes since Classic.
Level Squish, Questing and Chromie Time
For many returning players from Classic, leveling is a bit weird since the level cap for Shadowlands is, once more, level 60! This is because of a
level squish
that happened in preparation for the Shadowlands expansion. As expansions were releases, level caps were increased, which made gaining levels feel more and more meaningless for each expansion. With the level squish, each level earned feels like an accomplishment once more.

Shadowlands Leveling Changes & Level Squish
In Shadowlands, a new starting zone experience has been added, called
Exile's Reach
- An entirely new starting zone tailored to help players begin their WoW journey, with a new storyline that even ends in a dungeon! Returning players will need to go through Exile's Reach at least once, and after that, future characters will be able to choose between Exile's Reach or their race's original starting zone.

Shadowlands Guide to Exile's Reach
A feature available for veteran players is called
Chromie Time
- With this feature, players can choose which expansions they can level their alts on! With Chromie Time, levels are scaled to your current level, which makes it so you cannot outlevel zones, assuring you can complete storylines while earning full questing experience.
Returning players will need to go through Battle for Azeroth all the way to level 50 at least once before unlocking Chromie Time. For more information on the new system, check our Chromie Time guide!

Changed Zones
Zones have received many changes over the years. Azeroth was forever changed with Deathwing's passage on the event that set the beginning of the Cataclysm expansion.
Zones in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms were changed in both the
cosmetic way
and several of them also had their
leveling flow and range changed
.

Since Vanilla, each expansion has added a new continent with different zones.
Burning Crusade
has added

, the devastated remains of Draenor and controlled by Illidan Stormrage.
Wrath of the Lich King

Northrend
, a continent on the northern side of Azeroth, home of the Lich King.
Cataclysm
changed Azeroth zones forever, and uncovered previously hidden zones like the deserts of

. By clicking on those boards, you will be met with options of zones that are in your level range. Once you choose a zone, simply travel to where the quest giver is located and start questing there!
Quest Tracker
The addon QuestHelper was incredibly useful back in Vanilla, to help you track quest objectives and where you were supposed to go. Its functions have since been implemented into the standard game, now quests have both map and minimap displays on where their objectives are. The quest log was also merged with the map, for the same purposes.
On the map menu, you can choose to display what quests are being tracked or not, and it shows the general area where you can find the quest objectives at. When tracking a quest, the general area is also highlighted with a blue display on the minimap.
If you want, you can disable the quest tracker at any point by right-clicking a quest on your quest log.
Dungeon Leveling
Dungeons are no longer incredibly viable to level with, but can still be used at least once for quests. You no longer need to create a group for them, though - by pressing I, you will open the Dungeons & Raids window, where you can queue for dungeons or raids if you're at level cap. The group finder tool will automatically put you in line and create a group for you. You will also be teleported to the dungeon's entrance!
When queueing for a dungeon, you can either choose to queue to a Random dungeon or a Specific dungeon.
By queueing to a Random dungeon, the game will try to find a group for a dungeon in your level range, and you gain extra rewards like

, which contains a rare item, as well as extra experience.
By queueing to a specific dungeon, the game will try to find a group for that dungeon you've selected, however, there will be no extra rewards.
To complement these changes, dungeon quests are now seldom found around the world - Instead, you will find NPCs at the entrance of the dungeon with quests for that dungeon.
Dungeons are also revamped to have a much more linear path. Although older dungeons like
黑石深渊
still have a lot of different paths and nooks and crannies, newer dungeons released within later expansions are generally linear with only 1 possible path to the end of it.
Heirloom Equipment
A welcome change to the leveling system is the Heirloom system. Heirloom equipment is a special kind of equipment that scales with you as you level up, and gives you additional bonuses like increased rested experience, effects when enemies die or even heal you up.
Heirlooms are also special in the manner that they can be spawned at any point in the Collections menu (Shift + P, go to the Heirlooms tab), so you can have as many Heirlooms created as you want, and don't run into the danger of forgetting which alt you left them at.
However, they can be pretty pricey, so it's likely you won't be able to first obtain them on your first leveling character.

Talents
The talent system went through a major overhaul ever since Vanilla. Now, instead of having three trees of talents with mostly small tuning pieces, you must choose your specialization, with each class having 3 options, except
德鲁伊
and

, with 4 and 2 options, respectively. Choosing your specialization unlocks the core abilities and traits of it.
On top of your specialization, the new talent system consists of seven rows, with 3 options each, of strong and even game-style changing abilities. You are able to pick one option in each row to change how your specialization plays. Each row usually has an underlying theme to it, like
mobility
or
damage mitigation
, with each option offering a different way to improve your character in that aspect. You can learn more about different specializations and talents in our

You can change your specialization at any time, without any cost, as long as you're out of combat. In order to change talents, you must be out of combat and you either need to be in a resting zone, like a major city or inn or to be under the effect of special items that allow you to change talents on the fly, like

Riding and Transportation
Riding is another system that has changed dramatically since Vanilla. For starters, the speed of your mount is no longer associated with the mount itself. Instead, you need to purchase Riding Skill with Gold, and all your mounts will adapt to the riding skill you currently have learned.
Another change is, you can also fly! Flying mounts have since been implemented to the game, and you can use them to soar through the air in high speeds. Below is a list of mount skills and how much they cost, what level they can be learned, as well as other useful information.

Additionally, mounts are now learned, instead of occupying a bag slot. Learned mounts have their own menu accessible by pressing Shift+P, where you can see a list of mounts you obtained. Simply move a mount icon to your action bar to mount it!
Mounts have also become account-wide - Once you learn a riding mount, all characters on your account can use the mount (provided you have the minimum adequate riding skill to ride it)!
You can also see where you can obtain mounts you haven't learned yet, as well as sort out your favorite mounts!
Transportation
Transportation has also evolved over the years. Along with more zeppelins and boats to other places, Flight Paths continue to be a quick way around zones (and you can now fly to your destination without making more than 1 stop!), and many transportation items like extra Hearthstones are now available through different means.

Gear and How to Obtain It
Gear has since become much easier to obtain, and it is a lot more tailored to the strengths of your character. Some of the changes in gear over the years include:
Gear can no longer have more than one
Primary Stat
at the same time - If you play a class that uses more than 1 Primary Stat (like Paladins, they use Intellect to heal and Strength to tank/dps), your gear will automatically change between Strength and Intellect depending on your current specialization;
Hit Chance
is now gone, your attacks and spells don't miss anymore;
Armor and Spell Penetration
are gone, so are
Spell Resistances
;
Spell Power and Healing Power
are gone, now they come from your Intellect stat;
Defense rating
is gone, tanks are now guaranteed to not take critical hits or crushing blows unless sitting or when taking enemies much higher level than they are;
Sockets
have a chance to be added to every piece of gear you obtain, with gear from certain sources having guaranteed. Jewelcrafters are able to craft gems that can be added onto gear pieces with sockets in them, further improving the power of that piece of gear.
Secondary Stats
no longer give you a flat percentage chance, instead, you receive a secondary stat rating. You need a certain amount of rating for 1% of each stat.
There are also more secondary stats now:
Critical Strike:
Gives your attacks a chance to critically strike, dealing double its normal damage;
Haste:
Increases your attack speed, reduces your spell cast times and reduces the time between each tick on DOT spells;
Versatility:
Increases your damage done and reduces your damage taken;
Mastery:
Enhances a key characteristic of your specialization, changes in each specialization.
Tertiary Stats
are a new set of stats that have a chance to be added to every piece of gear you receive. Tertiary stats provide minor benefits that you won't really miss out on if you don't obtain them. There are currently four possible tertiary stats you can obtain, with each piece of gear only containing a maximum of one:
Speed
- Increases the base movement speed of the character by a given amount.
Indestructible
- Items with this tertiary stat will not have a durability attribute and thus won't ever break, saving the player eventual repair costs.
Leech
- All damage and healing dealt will heal your character as well, by a percentage of its final amount.
Avoidance
- Reduces all area damage received by a percentage. Any damage that is not targeted directed to you is classified as area damage.
World Quests
A good starter point to obtain gear once you're at the maximum level cap is World Quests
World Quests
World Quests are a new system where quests you have previously done in a zone become available again, this time giving you rewards such as Gold, Azerite Power, or Gear. Gear that comes from World Quests has an item level close to what you're currently wearing.

Reputation Gear
The reputation system has expanded over the years, but it still offers starting gear for newer players. You can now also continue grinding reputation with certain factions past Exalted, for improved rewards. Overall, reputations are less grindy, but still a big part of the game.
Although Vanilla added a faction that had a mount reward with the

and the

, Burning Crusade expanded the concept with faction mounts like

, the

nether rays, and the

netherdrakes. Since Burning Crusade, many factions have also added toys or mount rewards at the end of the grind. Like Sha'tari Skyguard and Netherwing, many factions also have a questline to go along with the grind, especially the Cloud Serpents from the

and the Falcosaurs from

.

Dungeons
Dungeons are as important as ever on the path of getting gear. Dungeons no longer drop full tier sets like Tier 0 and there are no quests to improve dungeon gear, like with Tier 0.5. However, loot for dungeons is now defaulted to
Personal Loot
, which means each person has a separate chance of getting a gear drop from bosses. Just loot the boss and good luck!
They now come in 4 different difficulties:
Normal
,
Heroic
,
Mythic
, and
Mythic Keystone
. Normal and Heroic can be accessed from the Group Finder in the Dungeons and Raids tab (press I). These harder difficulties award better gear.
Normal
is the easiest difficulty there is, you can immediately queue for those after hitting the level cap, and are the only difficulty accessible while leveling.
Heroic
is a middle of the road difficulty. You can queue for a heroic via the Group Finder once you reach a certain item level threshold, or if you have a group of friends, you can simply walk to the instance. Heroic Dungeons have a daily lockout.
Mythic
is a harder dungeon that cannot be queued for, instead, you need to create a group with your friends, or via the Group Finder, and run to the instance's door. Mythic Dungeons are on a weekly lockout.
Mythic Keystone
is a special dungeon mode that can only be accessed by using an
Mythic Keystone
on the altar near a dungeon's entrance. Mythic Keystone dungeons are special because they offer a scaling difficulty, the higher the value of your Keystone, the harder the dungeon will be. Those can scale indefinitely.

Timewalking Dungeons
This is a special dungeon mode, which allows you to revive your experiences of Dungeons of old. Every couple weeks, a Timewalking event will be active, allowing you to run special versions of old dungeons. You are scaled down to the original level of the dungeons, and the drops you get there are scaled to your current level.

In Timewalking dungeons you can collect

Raids
Raids are completely different from what they were in Vanilla. Now there are different difficulty settings, allowing players with less experience or time to experience this type of content. There are now four difficulty settings for each raid, on top of that, most difficulties offer flexible raid sizes, meaning the bosses and encounters will change based on the number of players present.
Raid Finder
is the easiest difficulty setting and can be queued via the Dungeons and Raids tab. The Raid Finder will gather a group of 25 people to kill bosses.
Normal and Heroic:
Those are middle-of-the-road difficulties that you need to find a group and run to the raid's entrance. A Normal or Heroic Raid group can contain 10 to 30 players and bosses will scale accordingly to your group's size. You can also invite your friends that play on different servers!
Mythic:
The hardest difficulty setting of a raid, destined for guilds. Mythic raids are balanced around 20 people in a group. You cannot invite players from other servers to try Mythic raids with you, unless enough time has passed on that tier.
Lockouts
Raid Lockouts have significantly changed since Classic: Dungeons above Normal Difficulty and Raids of all difficulties still have a lockout. However, you only get what's called loot locked - You can kill bosses as many time as you want in a given lockout, but you only have a chance at loot for the first time you kill a boss on that lockout.
Also, loot setting in raids is always set to Personal Loot, which means you need to loot the boss for a piece of loot, it no longer passes through a roll system or a master looter system.
Attunements
Some dungeons and raids during Vanilla had certain attunements attached to them that you needed to complete in order to either access the zone, like

, or to have a direct teleport to the zone, like
熔火之心
or
黑翼之巢
. Over the years those hard requirements for key parts of content faded off from the game, instead, now, there are minor pieces of content, with mostly cosmetic rewards, available to be unlocked.
Professions
Professions have been massively expanded over the years.
One of the main changes of Battle for Azeroth is that each expansion has its separate profession skill-up bar, instead of one gigantic profession skill-up bar englobing all expansions. What this means, is that you can now ignore past expansion recipes entirely, if desired, and only level the most current expansion's profession.
The Professions UI has also been heavily expanded - You can now more easily filter recipes, as well as check which recipes you haven't learned yet, and where to find said patterns.
During Legion, Recipe ranks were also added - Each profession recipe has 3 ranks. Higher rank recipes are more efficient, either requiring fewer materials to create or creating more items with each craft.
Several new professions have also been added to the game since Vanilla:
Archaeology
:
A secondary profession that allows you to see what's underneath Azeroth, literally. Travel around the world, explore dig sites, and locate ancient archaeology fragments that can be combined for a wide variety of rewards, including mounts and pets!
Inscription
:
A primary profession that uses different herbs to mill and create different kinds of ink. With those inks, you can create scrolls, glyphs or even powerful Darkmoon Cards!
Jewelcrafting
:
A primary profession that allows you to prospect rare gems from ores mined all around Azeroth. You can use said gems to create powerful gems that boost stats in your gear when added to a socket, or lapidate them into trinkets or toys!

Transmogrification
Don't you like what your current gear looks like? Wish to have that

appearance forever to look stylish in combat? Well, now you can, thanks to the transmogrification system!
With the transmogrification system, you can alter your gear's appearance to look like any other gear piece you've obtained. Once you obtain a piece of gear, you automatically "learn" it on your appearance tab, and can use it to transmogrify any pieces of gear right away! Just go to a transmogrifier NPC, found in capital cities.
You can keep track of what pieces of gear you have collected by looking at the Appearance tab (Shift + P, to to the Appearance Tab on the bottom left), as well as see locations for pieces you might be missing.

Pet Battles
Another system that has been severely expanded over the years is the Companion system - Now you can level your companions and use them to battle against other companions, and even players!
Like Mounts, companions are also learned and no longer occupy a bag slot when learned. You can also go into the wild and capture new companions to use as your own, or battle with them. They're also account-wide, which means all characters on your account will have access to them.

Achievements
Achievements are self-contained game goals that offer challenges and objectives to players that like to have a lot of goals in their mind. In WoW, Achievements cover every single aspect of gameplay, from leveling to Player vs. Player, Dungeons and Raids, Collections, and many many others.
Since the achievement list is expandable, new achievements are constantly added in new content patches. To open the Achievement tab, press the Y button on your keyboard (by default). Achievements can award many rewards like toys, mounts, and titles.
Most achievement credit and rewards are account-wide, which means characters across your entire account can earn credit or use the rewards from these!

PvP
In general, PvP has mostly changed since Classic. The Battleground system has been expanded, composed of a total of 12 different Battlegrounds to fight against, with different winning conditions on each of them. Battlegrounds no longer require you to be physically at its entrance, allowing you to queue for it using the group finder tool (default hotkey: H). You can now earn experience inside Battlegrounds, for those who prefer the PvP aspects of the game than to complete quests and dungeons and, at max level, Battlegrounds are also a viable option for gearing.
The classic PvP Honor Titles have since been moved as rewards of the
Rated Battleground System
, in which you must queue up with a premade team of 10 players to fight another premade team, with each battle influencing your rating. You earn the titles as you move up the rating ladder.
World PvP has now an entirely new system, as realms are no longer labeled as PvP or PvE realms. Instead, you can choose to go into PvP whenever you want by toggling on what's called War Mode. War Mode permanently flags you for PvP, and you will only see other War Mode flagged players while out in the world. While War Mode is active, you also have access to several Honor talents that can be used to improve your PvP prowess, being able to choose between 1 crowd control-focused talent, and 3 class specific talents. For those seeking to show their PvP prowess, there is the
Arena
, where players build up teams of 2 or 3 players to fight other teams in a last man standing battle in 8 different arena maps.

This isn't exactly true as melee attacking a mob from the front still has a 3% chance to be parried (as long as they are less than 3 levels higher than you, including bosses).

No mention that Arcane Torrent restores insanity as a shadow priest! But if Blizzard doesn't care about shadow I guess it makes sense to see them overlooked here too...
Another correction: Pandaren are in fact able to communicate cross-faction using their racial language.

A non-comprehensive list of all the advancements and quality of life improvements you can expect to go back to not having whenever they get around to releasing the vanilla servers.
Remember, Blizzard, they want the vanilla experience. They don't get any of this stuff. Don't be going half-measures with this and let them have the UI and group finding improvements.
