. Using their powers of undeath, they can manipulate frost or unholy powers to defeat enemies, or use blood magic to sustain massive amounts of damage and heal themselves.

Death Knights are special: they are the first Hero class to be added to the game, they start at level 10 instead of level 1, and they have an individual starting zone experience which sets them on a very special questline where you learn how and why they defected from the Lich King and decided to aid Azeroth.

Important Changes to Leveling a Death Knight in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch
The Shadowlands Covenant system is not being released in pre-patch, so will not be covered here. Players will not have the opportunity to choose a Covenant until their first character reaches level 60 in Shadowlands.
Death Knights begin at level 10 instead of level 55. They may only start in their class newbie zone, unless they are an Allied Race. Allied Race members start at level 10 and begin with a short quest line in Icecrown Citadel that takes them to Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
There is a new tab on your spellbook between General and your talent specialization, simply titled "Death Knight". These are abilities that are now shared by all Death Knights regardless of any specialization they choose.
New Death Knights will not begin in a default spec (Unholy). Until they are allowed to choose a spec at level 10, their abilities are drawn from the general Death Knight abilities available to all specializations.
Experienced Death Knights will notice some talents have been reworked or rearranged, and may require re-acquiring some talents.
AoE (Area of Effect) caps are being introduced in the Shadowlands pre-patch, which places a limit on how many targets the ability can hit at once. This affects some Death Knight abilities.
Best Death Knight Leveling Spec in Shadowlands
Although each specialization has strengths and weaknesses, we recommend Blood as the best Death Knight leveling spec. Blood has high area damage capability and amazing self-healing, and its damage is not far behind the two damage specializations. As a tank, you can often experience near-instant dungeon queues!
If you would rather level as a DPS, we recommend using Unholy to do so. With its diseases and summons, Unholy can more easily pull groups of mobs and survive. Unholy is also considered more iconic since no other spec in the game has such an attunement with undeath, disease, and pestilence.
Frost is an interesting and fun choice, but probably best left to more experienced players, as the spec can be a little fussy to make the most of it.
Choosing a Death Knight Specialization
Before level 10, you are just a Death Knight with some general abilities. When you reach level 10, you get to pick one of the three specializations: Blood, Frost, or Unholy.
At level 10, you will select a specialization. You can swap between specializations by opening up the Specialization & Talents tab (or pressing N to open it quickly), choosing the specialization you like, and clicking the Activate button. There is no cost to swapping!
Blood

Choosing a Race for Your Death Knight in Shadowlands
Choosing your race can be an arduous task, as it defines our character's appearance and is an expensive trait to change. Unlike in the past, Racial Traits don't give players many throughput benefits, most race perks are limited to utility or profession bonuses.
Death Knights share the distinction with Warriors as being one of the few classes that can choose any race they want!
Default Races
are races that are immediately available to be played when you start your WoW account.
Allied Races
are races that are locked behind certain requirements that need to be met before you can create characters belonging to that race.
Each race has different racial abilities and spells, but no races offer an immediate advantage when compared to others, so you can create your Death Knight to be whatever race suits your aesthetic best! Death Knights can choose from the following races (click on the race names to learn more about them!):

Every time you get a new two-handed weapon, you will want to runeforge it with

Death Knight Heirlooms in Shadowlands
Heirloom gear is a special gear category that scales with your current level, can be created on the fly with the Heirloom menu, and offers set bonuses when multiple heirloom pieces are worn. The heirloom set bonuses are listed below:
(2) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by 30%.
(3) Set: Increases your out-of-combat regeneration in the outdoors, normal dungeons and battlegrounds.
(4) Set: Gaining a level triggers Burst of Knowledge, dealing Holy damage to nearby enemies and granting you 40% primary stat for 2 minutes. Defeating additional enemies extends this effect, up to 2 additional minutes.
(6) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by an additional 30%.
Heirlooms have made a major change with Shadowlands -- the experience bonuses are gone. Instead, there will be set bonuses for wearing up to 6 different types of Heirloom armor pieces. The new set bonus can be obtained from all Heirloom pieces except weapons, shields, and trinkets, so body armor pieces, necklaces, and rings count.

Relics of the Past
Relics of the Past are a new profession reagent added in Shadowlands. When crafting profession items and adding them to the craft, these items will have their item level and required level changed. All crafting professions can craft Relics of the Past, and these are the Relics of the Past that can be crafted:

These are not very useful for leveling, as you should be outleveling items fairly quickly through your leveling experience in Shadowlands, but it can be a fun experience to level using items from the past.

Death Knights have unique access to an armor vendor in Acherus, the Ebon Hold,

, who sells Death Knight gear that scales with your level. This includes swords, rings, trinkets, and all armor pieces. For those with heirloom gear, this can help you catch up quickly on missing pieces. For those without it, periodic shopping trips to

can help gear up to date when you've been unlucky with drops or quest rewards.
The scaling works with any leveling strategy up to level 30. For characters above level 30, you will need to be in Legion Chromie Time to see pieces scale to a higher level.
Best Death Knight Leveling Professions in Shadowlands
If leveling quickly is your goal, your best bet is to go double-gatherer of
草药学
and

. Both skills give small amounts of experience when you mine a node or pick an herb, and you can sell the results in the Auction House (how well these sell for and for how much depends a great deal on your server economy).
剥皮
is also a gathering profession, but unlike
草药学
and
采矿
, it does not give skill.

Best Death Knight Questing Path in Shadowlands
In Shadowlands, players will go through a massive level squish, and with it, leveling paths are severely changed. The current level path for Shadowlands goes as follows:
Levels 8-10:
Death Knight Class Area (except for Allied Races)
Levels 10-50:
Battle for Azeroth zones or other expansion zones via Chromie Time
Levels 50-60:
Shadowlands Storyline or Threads of Fate
Unlike most other classes, Death Knights start out at level 8, not level 1. They are not allowed to start in any other newbie zone, and must complete the Death Knight class area quests before they can leave and go on to other areas.
Allied Race Death Knights start out at level 10, not level 8. Allied races start at Icecrown Citadel at the Frozen Throne. After a couple short quests, they will enter a portal to Orgrimmar or Stormwind, where they can go on to choose an expansion for their remaining 10-50 leveling.
There are innate advantages to leveling in each expansion - Vanilla is more friendly for those who can't fly, Wrath of the Lich King is very linear, Warlords of Draenor has a lot of treasures and bonus objectives, Legion has access to powerful Artifact weapons, etc.
For levels 50-60, for your first time going through Shadowlands, you are forced to follow the order Bastion > Maldraxxus > Ardenweald > Revendreth, but for subsequent characters, you will be able to choose what zone order you want to go through.

Threads of Fate Leveling
Threads of Fate is a new system added in the Shadowlands expansion. The Threads of Fate system allows you to level alts through completion of World Quests, Bonus Objectives, exploring the Shadowlands zones in a non-linear way. Shadowlands Death Knight Leveling Gameplay Mechanics
Death Knights are a strength based, plate-wearing, melee class capable of both high DPS and tanking. They are great for both solo and group leveling, but there are some challenges those new to the class should be aware of going into the class.
Death Knight Runes and Runic Power
Death Knights have their own resource systems, which combines a quick regenerating primary resource, and a secondary resource that is solely acquired through use of combat abilities.
符文
are the Death Knight's primary resource. Runes regenerate on their own every 10 seconds, reduced by your Haste, and are used to power Death Knight's most basic abilities, like

. You have a maximum of 6 runes, and up to 3 runes can regenerate at a time. Haste increases how fast your runes regenerate. Out of combat, you will keep all 6 runes active and ready to use. On the default UI, runes show up below your Runic Power bar and differ in color depending on your specialization (red for Blood, blue for Frost, green for Unholy). Those color changes are merely cosmetic.

Death Knight Runeforging

is an ability exclusive to Death Knights. Runeforging allows Death Knights to enchant their weapons with special enchantments, suited to their needs. Runeforging is free of cost and learned after a few quests on the Death Knight starting zone, but you need to stand nearby a Runeforge to be able to runeforge a weapon. Each weapon can only be enchanted with one rune enchantment at a time. There are three enchantments available:

: This rune gives you extra weapon damage as Frost damage and attacking enemies increases their vulnerability to your Frost abilities.
堕落十字军符文
: This rune gives your melee attacks a chance to heal you for a small percentage of your health and increase your Strength for a few seconds.

: This rune increases your movement speed by 5%. Additionally, when you kill an enemy that yields experience or honor you heal for 5% of your maximum health and gain 10% Haste and movement speed.

is the recommended runeforge for Blood and Unholy Death Knights, while Frost Death Knights will want

on their main-hand weapon, and

on their off-hand weapon. Runeforges are also stronger than regular weapon enchants!
The most convenient Runeforge is in Acherus in Ebon Hold (you can use

to reach it). There are other Runeforges, all located in Icecrown in the Shadow Vault, Mord'rethar -The Death Gate, and Icecrown Citadel, so the one in Acherus is likely to be the most readily available to you.
Death Knight Utility
Death Knights have various survivability abilities:

(level 12): Raises a ghoul to fight by your side. You can have a maximum of one ghoul at a time. Lasts 1 minute.

I'm sorry, but recommending Unholy over Frost seems really, really bad. Unholy is a very involved spec, with multiple cooldowns to juggle. Frost has a simple rotation, great survivability and not as many plates to spin as Unholy. I think it's a major fault to recommend Unholy to new players to the class, resulting in frustration. Probably why icy-veins recommends Frost over Unholy too.

Why would you advise players to use dark command or death grip to engage targets? Neither of those are best used on pull, they are better used to get a mob off a dps or healer, or yank a caster, or as a second interrupt (in death grip's case). Taunting on pull means your taunt is on CD for when you need it, and gripping on pull divides the pack, diminishing cleave. Pull with DnD into BB, or just BB if DnD is on CD.
