A Protection Paladin Guide: The Last Defender
Welcome!
The WoW Generalist focuses on making quality guides and content for players looking to advance their skill-set, or mechanical play in-game. Our goal is to keep the guides simple and effective. This guide will attempt to provide updated content for players looking to maximize their play in the current patch.
The Purpose of this Guide
By using this guide you should be able to confidently run +15 Mythic Dungeon keys and complete them on time. After you feel comfortable with how the build works, players can start to test their own modifications and rotations to see what works best for them. The WoW Generalist believes that each class and spec has built-in flexibility that allows you to customize the build based off your play-style. Having said that, you may not be aware or familiar with some of the suggestions we make in this guide and we encourage you to test them all.
Characteristics of a Protection Paladin
Protection Paladin is often overlooked as being a capable tank. Rarely would you see a PUG Mythic + group pick a Protection Paladin over a Protection Warrior in this current patch. This guide will set a foundation to help show that Protection Paladin can be a strong and resilient tank with an intermediate level skill-cap. Let’s look at some of the base stats your iLvl 470 Protection Paladin has while not in combat.
Strength – 11k
Hit Points – 750k
Armor – 11.3k
Block – 28% (Reducing an attack by 61.47%)
Parry – 35%
Dodge – 3%
Physical Damage Reduction – 64%
Paladin is a plate wearing class, so we do reap the benefit of having more base armor which translates to a higher percent of physical damage reduction. Having higher amounts of
critical strike
will
increase
the base amount of
parry
your Paladin has. Having higher amounts of
mastery
will
increase
the base amount of
block
your Paladin has, as well as its normal function

chance, so in order to maximize your mitigation it is recommended you focus these stats. Now let’s look at the relative maximum base stats in combat.

Protection Paladin may not have as much base HP as some other tanks but where they fail you will succeed. With a firm understanding of your tool kit and passive synergies you can turn your Protection Paladin into an absolute monster that every PUG group will be dying to invite.
The Build
There are a plethora of possible ways to play your Protection Paladin. This build will give you the tools to achieve high amounts of damage and survivability, as well as taking minimal damage in the process. This build is centralized on
复仇者之盾
and its reset capability with

(Passive)
. When you use

(Azerite Trait)
partnered with

(Talent)
you can increase the base reset chance to 30%, which is huge.
The first part of

states that when you avoid an attack you have a 30% chance

to reset the cool-down (CD) on

. For melee classes; dodge, parry, and miss are all different ways you can avoid an attack. With a higher cumulative total percentage of those stats, you therefore have a higher percentage chance to avoid an attack entirely.
The second part of

states that

has a chance to reset
复仇者之盾
upon activation. Through testing however,
祝福之锤
, which replaces
正义之锤
, has proven to be a more reliable talent option for DPS generation, resets, and overall mitigation than the other choices on that row

. The reason for this is that
正义之锤
requires you to be within melee range of your target and has only (2) charges.
祝福之锤
has (3) charges and can be cast without requiring an enemy to be near you and out of combat.
This means you can fish for resets when you are out of combat or chain pulling mobs. When the dual-function of this ability is engaged on a large mob pull you will find that
复仇者之盾
can be reset every few seconds if not every global. You can expect to see your Protection Paladin easily doing +100k DPS on mob pulls running this build.
How does this affect our mitigation?
Being able to do damage as a tank is practical, but it should not come at the cost of your ability to survive. This build will allow you to produce some substantial healing per second
(HPS)
and mitigation. This is possible thanks to the
光明堡垒
Azerite Trait and proper use of your
正义盾击
. It is strongly recommended that you get (3)
光明堡垒
total for maximum benefit considering that they stack numerically in shield value, and is also affected by versatility.

(This is the 20% buff that comes from using

)
must be applied as often as possible before activating
正义盾击
to ensure you are getting the most amount of physical damage mitigation. Without the 20% increased effectiveness on the armor provided by
复仇者的勇气
you will not approach the cap for physical damage reduction, which is 85%. Since the primary type of damage you will take in a Mythic Dungeon is physical, we recommend you seek out the most amount of armor possible for the best results.
This build focuses on producing enough resets on your
复仇者之盾
to always provide the 20% increased effectiveness on
正义盾击
in order to always make reaching the armor cap possible in-combat.
Recent testing has shown that
正义盾击
can now stack in duration. So, it is possible to have (20) seconds on up-time on the armor buff or more. Each time you cast the spell you add 4.5 seconds to the total duration. We recommend using a Weak Aura to show you how long you have on your buff to maximize your mitigation.
The up-time on your armor buff should exceed 60% with this build, provided you are going through the rotation correctly and not missing a global. A significant point to this form of mitigation is that it has remained consistent since expansion release. In every dungeon that was run to test this build

was the number one heal and 70% or more of all damage taken by the tank was able to be healed by the tank alone.

What to look for when you tank
Are you having aggro issues?
Holy damage generates the most aggro for a Protection Paladin, so maintaining up-time on holy damage spells like
奉献
and
祝福之锤
will help ensure you take more than 90% of all physical damage in the dungeon.
清算之手
has an 8 sec CD, but a few crits with some holy damage spells can be just as effective.
Are there any spell casters
not
on your
奉献
?
Protection Paladin can handle situations like this with ease thanks to the silence provided by
复仇者之盾
. Silenced spell casters will usually run to whomever they have aggro on, which should be the tank. In the event that the spell caster remains stationary, you can try breaking the line-of-sight (LoS) of the target and they will surely follow.
When should you use
?
This spell heals for the most based on the targets missing health. When paired with the guaranteed critical hit from activating
复仇之怒
, it has the potential to heal a target back to 100%. You can use this spell on yourself or an ally, but try to save it for when the target is lower on health for the most value.

In order to achieve the results desired out of this build, the following talent selections have been chosen for maximum efficiency and ease of play. While the reasoning for these selections can vary with word count keep in mind that we have chosen these talents based on their utility and strength with this build. The explanations provided below may not cover all the bases concerning the synergies they hold with other selections. In order to keep things consistent and to promote brevity, not all the talents will be discussed in as much depth as the others.

– This talent allows for substantial magical damage mitigation because it allows you to block spells along with normal melee attacks. It also increases your block chance by an additional 15% all the time. These traits are very alluring but do not let it fool you. If you take this talent on a dungeon that does not have extremely heavy magic damage, like

, or

, you will do less damage and less healing overall rather than if you had taken a talent that is better suited for physical damage reduction.

– This ability increases the target limit of
复仇者之盾
by (1), and it increases the amount of block rating you have by 75% of its current value, not your percent chance to block. Block rating reduces the amount of damage taken when you block an attack or spell. The only way to increase your block rating is by taking
内视之光
(Azerite Trait)
and currently does not exhibit an up-time that produces enough mitigation for it to be viable. Keep in mind that higher level keys do more damage so percent reductions or percent increases are more valuable than rating. Currently this talent is not a viable option for mitigation comparatively speaking for this build, but could potentially be worked into a DPS build in the future.

– Currently this serves as the best talent on the row for physical damage mitigation and DPS generation. Each time an enemy gets struck by the hammer their next auto-attack done to you is cut by 12%. We get (3) charges of this spell and with enough haste you can get the recharge time under (4) seconds. This means you should be using this spell as often as possible for shield resets, damage, and mitigation. Do not waste a global.

. This also allows us to reduce the CD of

for a higher up-time on the buff. Even though on paper you will do more single-target boss damage with double judgement, taking

will produce more DPS. As far as the reduced CD on

, there is less demand for it if you are getting enough resets on
复仇者之盾
, which you will.
– Currently the CD of this spell is too long for it to compete with the other options on this row. We do not recommend taking it.

– This is our only form of stock crowd-control (CC) on the class. Having the reduced CD on it is very beneficial. This talent works well in conjunction with

, if you desire to take that over the recommended option.
忏悔
– We recommend taking this talent if you know you are going to need a ranged CC in your dungeon and your team lacks one. Other than that, this ability remains best selected if you are doing PvP. Since this is PvE, we do not recommend this selection. It is also important to note that this spell can be used to break spells like

from the

in

, and others that don't typically present themselves as spells. Usually these bars are grey and can otherwise not be interrupted. Given that Protection Paladin has an arsenal of tools to control mobs and their spell casters, this talent should be reserved for Retribution and Holy specs.

– Valuable CC if you need the immediate blind to break combat or break an enemy ability. Keep in mind that any damage done will break the spell, so if you cast this on a group of enemies standing on your consecration then the CC breaks as soon as you hit the button.

– This is our recommended choice considering Protection Paladin mobility is very limited.

– In almost every situation

is most valuable to the team, because the primary type of damage being took in a dungeon will be physical. A large majority of classes have personal defensive cooldowns available to them for handing magic damage. As as tank, if you lose aggro to another member of the group you can use spells like
保护祝福
to prevent a death and reclaim aggro.
*This includes most lethal boss de-buffs*

– We do not recommend taking this talent over the other choices in this row.

– This talent is useful for

weeks and if you find yourself not being able to survive in large mob pulls.
– We recommend taking this talent for its utility among the team and for its reduced CD. This is currently the only instant-cast active heal that a Protection Paladin has and being able to use it more frequently in conjunction with its passive effect makes this talent the most favorable.

– This talent provides a consistent heal that comes from casting

and we recommend you take this talent over the other two options.

– This talent is substantial on

weeks if you find yourself in situations where you need to kite enemies, but the increased size will not do much for your DPS or Healing.

– Currently its CD and function is not appropriate with most mechanics in a Mythic + dungeon so we do not recommend taking this talent.

– We recommend you take this talent for the most mitigation and DPS generation available out of the three options in this row. As you pull bigger, you take less damage and do more damage.

– If you find yourself taking more damage than you’re comfortable with, then you should take this talent and pull smaller. This talent will make your

available more often.
– We recommend you only take this talent/build with high amounts of haste.
*28% base or more for optimal CDR*
Even though the buff is to all secondary stats including versatility, the down-time means you take more damage and do less damage overall than if you took
最终防御者
. This spell is also in direct contention with our primary source of physical damage mitigation, which is why we decided against it.
Stats
The Wow Generalist recognizes that there are various strategies for stat dumping and an overall preference of a given secondary stat priority, but in order to achieve the most optimal results we suggest the following stat priority with this build.
1) Critical Strike
– This stat alone can determine the overall effectiveness of this build. Too little, and you will not avoid enough attacks to produce a generous number of resets on
复仇者之盾
. Too much, and the build will be too slow, and you will get punished in the event you don’t critically strike. A comfortable amount of critical strike to have is around 30% (1750). This will also give you a little bit more than 21% extra parry chance before diminishing returns. When
复仇之怒
is active, your critical strike gets increased by 20% and will give us even more parry. The weight of this stat is as follows: 59 points of crit = 1% crit
2) Mastery
– The effect from
精通:神圣壁垒
means we must maintain up-time on
奉献
continuously throughout the dungeon for maximum benefit. The attack power boost scales directly with the total percentage amount of mastery you have; which increases the base damage and healing of most of our abilities. The weight of this stat is as follows: 51 points of mastery = 1% mastery. The percent damage reduction generated from your mastery scales at a third of your total percentage. That weight looks like this: 147 points of mastery = 1% damage reduction of all types from standing in
奉献
. So, with 30% mastery you would get 10% damage reduction from all types. Dumping on this stat is not a bad idea if you want more percent mitigation, but for the optimal results using this build you’ll want to have around 30% (1570).
3) Haste
– Having a decent amount of haste is essential for the flow of the build, and most of our ability’s CD timers scale down with haste. For those who did not know, the quickest your GCD
(Global Cool-Down)
timer can refresh is .5 seconds, which is also 50% haste. Any percentage of haste over this amount only reduces the CD recovery rate further and will not allow you to cast any faster. You’ll want around 20% haste (1350) if you can get it. This stat is also heavier than the other two previously listed. The weight of this stat is as follows: 68 points of haste = 1% haste.
4) Versatility
– This stat gets applied after your other multipliers, which means it’ll increase your base damage, healing, and damage reduction by the total percentage respectively. The reason we recommend you do not prioritize this stat over the others is because mastery gives you the same benefit but at a cheaper price. The weight for this stat is as follows: 85 points of versatility = 1% versatility. At that rate 85 points of mastery would give you 1.6% attack power and .57% damage reduction from standing in consecration. It is important to note that even with only one target,

gives us 3% damage reduction from all types. Because of this, we can bypass stacking versatility in order to survive. This is not to say you should completely ignore this stat. Having a base of 5-10% (425-850) versatility is recommended since healing does get multiplied by this stat.
Azerite Traits
Your Tier 4 and Tier 5 traits will help most with this build, so having a select piece of gear is not as important as making sure you have these primary traits. The T3, T2, T1 (+5 iLvL) traits are more for secondary stat benefit and can be chosen at your discretion. As noted previously in this guide there are some traits that are dire to this build. Those are as follows:

Of all the primary traits available for your Protection Paladin the (4) listed above will provide you more healing than any other and an additional 5% increased chance to reset

. The primary stat buff from
激励勇士
has a 70-80% up-time when running this build. Since you have a total of (6) primary Azerite Traits the other (2) selections for primary traits can be substituted using any of the following listed below. Keep in mind that some of these traits can work proficiently for its purpose when stacked and others are better to only have (1) of.
飞舞之盾
x (1) or (2): Extra damage on
复仇者之盾
because of the target cap and stacking mastery for more mitigation and attack power. We recommend this option as worth double stacking because of its benefit for tanking purposes. We also strongly encourage you to wear at least (1) at all times because of its up-time in combat. It is important to note that you can still reach the maximum amount of stacks with this trait on (1) target. If you can get a shield reset before (8) seconds, you'll continue to stack this trait until capped.

x (1) or (2): This trait does reduced damage because you are in a tank spec, but it is still worth having because the CD of
审判
is much lower as a tank than the other specs. This will buff up your single target damage if you feel like you have sufficient mitigation and are interested in pumping up your DPS.
复仇者之力
x (1): This talent can boost both your DPS and mitigation while
复仇之怒
is active but trying to get a piece of gear with this trait and
光明堡垒
will have to come from the raid, or PvP. This combination does not currently drop from Mythic+ Dungeon azerite gear.
Essences
Major:

– Having the highest amount of up-time possible on
复仇之怒
is critical for maintaining the highest level of mitigation, DPS, and presence possible in your Mythic+ Dungeon. Each time this essence activates you get the guaranteed critical on your next

– This build prioritizes avoiding attacks so this essence will be a reliable passive heal that procs often.
清醒梦境之忆
– Getting a partial refund on your
正义盾击
+ Versatility for 8 seconds does well to help maintain 60% up-time on the armor buff.
沉抑之球
– This provides a consistent 5% haste buff that is active if you are taking melee damage. You can expect to see upwards of 70% up-time on the haste and 30-40% on the slow. This talent can also help you control melee targets because of the slow applied from hitting you.
Alternatives:
冲突与斗争
– This buff is worth about 6% versatility and will increase the amount absorbed by your bulwark of light by roughly 2k. If you really need that extra healing or feel like versatility is the way to go, then wear your preference.
深渊之护
– This is another good selection if you like to pull big. Having the increased damage reduction and healing from the versatility is a nice compliment to your already thriving mitigation.
世界血脉共鸣
– Primary stat drives the base armor value from

and the base damage + healing of most of our abilities. Taking this as a minor is a strong alternative.
Putting it all together
At this point you now know how the build works and most of the synergies between your abilities and passive functions. So, we’ll piece everything together to show what exactly makes this tank a beast. For starters, lets look at what happens when you press

Throughout the guide you may have started to notice that much of the build is passive and abilities like
复仇者之盾
do multiple things when you press the button. This is all intentional, as the passive effect and applications of these buffs and abilities save you time in-game to focus on micro-play actions that can be the difference between making a dungeon on time or not. This is the reason why we are trying to get as many resets on
复仇者之盾
as possible. These benefits that all come from one ability is what makes this build work. The rate at which you can get resets is frequent enough to easily maintain high uptimes on these buffs.
复仇者之盾
has a (15) second CD. You can either wait the (15) seconds to use it again, or you can cast it almost every global. The choice is yours.
What happens when you're in combat?
When you’re tanking it is important to prioritize certain spells over others, especially when they deal with your survivability. So, below is a list of spells you should be casting or maintaining during your fight. You could call this a rotation.

: To pull initial aggro from up to (30) yards away, hits (4) targets.

: Once you’re on top of the mob you must drop this spell and maintain it 100% of the time. This spell’s CD is less than the duration of its up time. This is intentional so that if you move you can drop your Consecration again under the enemies without it ever running out. Standing in this spell is vital to you taking severely reduced damage.

: As explained earlier, make sure to fully utilize the 20% armor buff to this spell after you use
复仇者之盾
. Try your best to time your usage of this ability with attacks you know will do substantial physical damage to the tank, like

are on CD. Along with this spell providing mitigation, this spell is also going to generate many of your shield resets. It is important to note that on large mob pulls, you should prioritize this spell over
审判

WILL be resetting nearly every global.
Protection Paladin only has a few abilities that do damage, but these (5) are the core. It is important to note that
正义盾击
is off the global cool-down, which means you can cast this spell while casting another. A good strategy is using your
正义盾击
and
审判
on the same cast, or another combination of abilities that follows your needs. This can free up a global for your rotation in case you need to do things like heal yourself with
. Always make sure you are casting a spell.
