A Guide to Vengeance Demon Hunter: A Complete Monster
Welcome!
The WoW Generalist focuses on creating quality guides and content for players looking to advance their skill-set or mechanical play in-game. Our goal is to keep the guides simple and effective. Since most of the available guides that we reviewed are based off the original release of this expansion and may not have been thoroughly tested or modified since, this guide will attempt to provide updated content for players looking to maximize their play in the current patch.
Purpose of This Guide
By using this guide, you should be able to confidently run +15 Mythic Dungeon keys and complete them on time. After you feel comfortable with how the build works, players can start to test their own modifications and rotations to see what works best for them. The WoW Generalist believes that each class and spec has built-in flexibility that allows you to customize the build based off your play-style. Having said that, you may not be aware or familiar with some of the suggestions we make in this guide and we encourage you to test them all.
Vengeance Demon Hunter
Vengeance Demon Hunter is commonly described as appealing because of their mobility and active healing. Their most impressive capability however, is their ability to stand and fight under heavy pressure for an extended period. Because of their impressive array of passive mitigation, threat generation and active healing, add pulls or boss fights where you are taking 60k to 80k damage are when Vengeance Demon Hunters shine. This guide will provide some insight into how to get the most out of your Vengeance Demon Hunter without having to use that mobility as a last resort.
Demon Hunter Tank Characteristics
Vengeance Demon hunter is a tank with high: stamina, physical damage reduction, dodge, parry, active healing and mobility. The common play style is easy to learn with few complicated or high skill cap requirements in order to produce impressive damage output and survivability. The following are stats that you can expect to see on your +470 geared tank without buffs and before combat begins.
Agility +11,000
Hit Points +900k
Armor +7,000
Dodge +20%
Parry +15%
Physical Damage Reduction +50%
Although the baseline stats are not overly impressive compared to other tanks, let’s take a look at some maximums you can expect to see from that same tank while in combat. Like the first list these stats are without buffs.
Agility +18,000
Hit Points +1,300k
Armor +40k
Dodge +30%
Parry +30%
Physical Damage Reduction = 85% (Capped)
Active healing +60k HPS
If you build your tank capable of these kinds of stats and test it in one of the many simulators available today, you will be pleased to see results like +50k DPS and +65k healing. Not only can you expect to see these kinds of stats in combat, you’ll see them frequently and often times, together. This is why a Vengeance Demon Hunter can not only stand and fight, they can maintain that fight continuously. In the upcoming sections we will look at exactly how you can turn your Vengeance Demon Hunter into this tanking monster.
The Basics: Stat Priority and Talents
Stat Priority
In this section of the guide we will go over what we believe is the most effective stat priority for a Demon Hunter tank. Since everyone wants to see a list, we’ll give you one. Then we’ll discuss in detail why we believe these are the most effective.
*This prioritized list is an example of what we believe are the best baseline stats for your tank*
1. Agility = Increases Attack Power and dodge.
2. Mastery = +60%
3. Critical Strike = +30%
4. Haste = 25%
5. Versatility = 10%
Agility
This stat drives everything your tank is capable of doing and as such must be your primary focus. You should accumulate as much Agility as you can from all sources. Because of its value to Demon Hunter Tanks, we will not put any secondary stat above it.
Mastery
Knowing that many players prioritize Haste and Versatility, let’s discuss why we selected Mastery over Haste and Versatility. In short, its simple math so let’s take a look at some math.
1% Versatility = 1% increased damage and healing done and .5% less damage taken.
1% Mastery = .4% increased attack power and armor bonus from
恶魔尖刺
increased by 1% of Agility.
85 points in Versatility = 1%
20 points in Mastery = 1%
Given these statistics let’s take a closer look at why Demon Hunter
精通:邪能之血
outperforms when directly compared to Versatility.
1,500 points of Versatility = 17.647% increased damage and Healing done and 8.8% reduced damage taken.
1,500 points of Mastery = 75% x .4 = 30% increased Attack Power and armor bonus from Demon Spikes increased by 75% of Agility.
Now let’s take a look at what Attack Power actually does for a Demon Hunter tank. The following are just a few examples that should help you understand how we can get the simulator results we do.
灵魂壁障
– Absorb all damage equal to 500% of Attack Power * percent health.
灵魂裂劈
- Strike all enemies in front of you for (58.5% of Attack power) Physical damage and heal yourself for (105% of Attack power).
吞噬灵魂
– Heals you for 8% of all damage taken in the last 5 seconds AND killing a target will sometimes shatter their soul, leaving a Soul Fragment behind for 20 sec. The Soul Fragment will be consumed when you approach it, healing you for (348.075% of Attack power) health.
- Brutally slam your target for Physical damage, and shatter two Lesser Soul Fragments from them.
Vengeance Demon Hunter spells and abilities scale off Attack Power. Attack Power gained through Mastery scales at a rate of 1.6% for each comparable point of Versatility. Given that Versatility increases damage and healing done by a percentage of the roll this doesn’t impact passive mitigation. Due to the fact that Versatility is more expensive to accumulate and provides less Attack Power; Mastery is the superior stat.
Critical Strike
We selected Critical Strike over Haste and Versatility because we felt that of all the available passive mitigation a Demon Hunter has, parry provides the greatest value before diminishing returns. Beyond that, I’m sure we don’t have to go into great detail about the positive benefit high critical strike can have on your DPS.
Along with increasing your damage and healing done Critical Strike increases your existing parry chance by 1% for every ~80 points of crit. This does not mean that if you have 800 points of crit your parry chance will go up by 10%. It means your existing parry chance will be increased by 10% of its current value. For example, 1,398 points of crit will increase your existing parry chance by 17.48% giving you a total parry chance of 15.36%. Although that seems fairly cheesy by itself, when combined with Demon Spikes increasing your parry chance by a full 15% leaving you at over 30% parry, now you’ve got some passive mitigation.
Haste
If you prioritize Mastery over Versatility you will find it difficult not to gain at least 25% Haste. Since this build is purely a physical damage build and because some of your most important abilities scale off Haste, you will want at least this percentage.
Versatility
Although you can run this build with zero Versatility, it does still give a one for one percentage increase to all damage and healing done. The other stats in this build are also structured in a way where you don’t regularly run into diminishing returns or the cap on any one specific mitigation. I’m sure no one will complain about a 10% increase in DPS while still being able to duel it out with all the bad guys you’re sure to face.
Building your Tank
Now that we’ve gone over the boring stuff let’s take a look at how you can leverage what you’ve learned so far. This section of the guide will discuss appropriate gear and talents for this build and why we chose them.
Gear
Our discussion of gear is limited to getting the highest item level gear you can that provide the secondary stats we outlined in the beginning of this guide. Beyond that, make sure to collect as much primary stat as you can. Once you have mastered this build you can obviously go after whatever gear is appealing to you.
We will say that your selection of trinkets should focus on: primary stat, high DPS, or Mastery. If you must use a healing trinket you can but our healing numbers were sufficient without it. For our test build we used
艾泽洛克的共鸣之心
for the primary stat proc chance and
瓶中的电荷元素
because he does about 6% of our overall DPS.
Talents
Row 1 -
Row 2 -
爆燃
Row 3 -
烈焰冲撞
Row 4 -
Row 5 -
快速咒符
Row 6 -
荒宴
Row 7 -
灵魂壁障
Row One
Each of the talents in row one can be used depending on your play-style. For our build we selected
because we prioritize high uptime on Demon Spikes, greater than 45%, and Soul Cleave so we want the 15% increased physical damage.
We decided against
深渊打击
because
烈焰咒符
doesn’t stack well. Having more
地狱火撞击
is fine at low haste levels but at 25% Haste you’ll be queuing them up along with Sigil of Flame if you also select
烈焰冲撞
, which we did.
Row Two
In row two, although we tested all three talents, we selected
爆燃
for the increased Soul Fragment generation since that is your number one heal.
Row Three
In row three we selected
烈焰冲撞
for increased threat generation. We also want to push our Sigil of Flame up-time over 50% to compensate for not selecting Abyssal Strike in row one. The up-time percentage is also improved if you select
快速咒符
in row five.
Row Four
In row four
is the only viable choice because of its resource generation. Selecting any other option will significantly reduce your DPS and survivability.
Row Five
In row five each of the talents can be used depending on your play-style. For our build we selected
快速咒符
for more effective crowd control and because of the reduced activation time and cool-down. If you combine Quickened Sigils with the
咒符之环
(Azerite trait)
you can also greatly reduce the cooldown of all your sigils.
Row Six
In row six we selected
荒宴
because of the increased proc chance for
恶魔变形
. Given that Blizzard nerfed
幽魂炸弹
and buffed Metamorphosis in an effort to encourage people to play the physical damage build, we decided to check it out and so far, it’s working very well.
Row Seven
In row seven we selected
灵魂壁障
for its outstanding healing numbers. It is our opinion that taking any other talent in this row will significantly reduce your overall healing and survivability. As we discuss later in this guide, you can expect +25% up-time and more than 10 million overall healing while not taking anything away from your Soul Fragment healing.
Azerite Traits, Essences, Your Cloak, and Corruption
In this section of the guide we would like to discuss what we believe are the best Azerite Traits and essences to enhance this build. It is entirely up to you which, if any, of these you choose to use on your tank. We believe this will provide you with the best combination of damage output and survivability as you make your way through end game content.
Azerite Gear
The following gear will provide the maximum defensive capability for your tank. As you become comfortable using this build, feel free to swap out this gear (listed below) for other more DPS oriented selections. This gear selection was originally made in Patch 8.1 and remains as our recommendation for those looking to play a durable and stable tank in the current patch.
Helm –
流水阴谋风帽
Shoulders –
高莱克·图尔的披肩
Chest –
间谍大师裹布
These items provide the following Azerite traits that we feel are the most beneficial to your survivability. For the unlisted selections feel free to use whichever DPS or defensive traits are best for your play-style.
地狱火护甲
x (2)
刚硬甲壳
x (2) or (1) if also selecting
咒符之环
x (1)
精华割裂
x (1)
收割之刻
x (1)
贩卖灵魂
x (3)
We would like to discuss why we select these traits so you have a better understanding of what they can do for you.
Infernal Armor
We expect to have 50% up-time on Infernal Armor so the combined DPS and increased armor associated with this trait is very appealing.
Rigid Carapace
Although our current test build only uses one of these, we like the idea of reducing spikey damage taken and this trait allows us to do that.
Soul Monger
Although Impassive Visage provides a comparable heal, Soul Monger will overtake Impassive Visage in higher damage situations. We also find the absorption shield to be very useful in many situations.
Hour of Reaping and Essence Sever
These are clearly beneficial to your healing capabilities and we highly recommend one of each regardless of what Azerite gear you select.
Azerite Essences
Primary Essence –
世界血脉共鸣
This build provides you with a highly survivable tank and it is our opinion that you will not need additional defensive mitigation here. We believe that whichever primary essence you select should be purely offensive and promote the core characteristics of the build. For our build we have selected Worldvein Resonance because of the large boost of Agility for 18 seconds. The amount scales with your
艾泽拉斯之心
. The trait will enhance your overall DPS for an extended period on a one minute cooldown and give you additional passive dodge while it is active.
Secondary Essences
完美愿景
– Reduced cooldown on Metamorphosis with a slight healing benefit.
冲突与斗争
– We pull big so having some extra Versatility will be beneficial in every instance.
勇卫之力
– This build is a high dodge and parry build so the healing here is consistent and reliable.
Other helpful Essences
沉抑之球
– If you have agro issues this will reduce enemy attacker’s movement speed by 30% and give you what equates to a 5% haste buff. As long as you are in melee combat this buff will remain active.
虚无粹源
– Every 15 seconds you gain a magic absorption shield that lasts for 10 seconds, then exploding when expired for an amount equal to the absorbed damage taken. Consider this essence for
暴富矿区!!
and
风暴神殿
.
Legendary Cloak and Corruption Effects
We would be remiss to leave discussion of your legendary cloak out of this conversation. It is critical that you raise your cloak to at least level 12 so that you can benefit from the primary stat proc chance it provides. We also believe that you should continue to level your cloak in order to facilitate wearing maximum corruption gear with the best corruption resistance that you can get.
Corruption Effects
For all Demon Hunter Tanks we recommend using
不可言喻的真相
. This corruption effect reduces the cooldown of your abilities by 30% to 50% while active. During our testing we found that we could eliminate using
完美愿景
as a primary Azerite essence because this effect allowed us to use
恶魔变形
more than 12 times per dungeon.
If you are having trouble maintaining greater than 90% of all physical damage taken we recommend using
虚空回响
. Using this effect will be beneficial in your effort to insure that bad guys pay attention to you and only you.
Regardless of the corruption effects you wear, we recommend staying below 30 unmitigated corruption if you can. Having to move the mob to avoid your
腐化之眼
or taking an extra 5 million damage as a tank in high damage dungeons is something you want to stay away from.
Putting It All Together
If you have followed our guide this far, you have successfully equipped your Vengeance Demon Hunter for battle. We have provided you with an impressive toolkit. In this section of the guide we would like to discuss how to leverage that toolkit to fully utilize the capabilities of your new tank.
Tool Kit
Your tank is equipped with a tool kit that includes: crowd control, damage mitigation, active healing, and throughput. We believe that in order to be an effective tank, not only do you need to use your entire tool kit, you need to know when to use each tool in that kit.
Your crowd control includes the following:
折磨
and
投掷利刃
provide redirection and direct threat generation.
瓦解
and
禁锢
are your kick and incapacitate.
影遁
and
幽灵视觉
control the actions of enemies you engage with.
沉默咒符
,
悲苦咒符
, and
吞噬魔法
, impact or nullify enemy abilities.
快速咒符
reduces the cool down of
悲苦咒符
and
沉默咒符
by 20%.
causes melee attacks to snare enemies by 20% for six seconds.
Your direct damage mitigation includes:
Armor – Reduces physical damage taken.
恶魔尖刺
– Increase armor by a percentage of mastery.
恶魔变形
– Increases armor by 200% for its duration.
刚硬甲壳
– Adds a stacking armor buff for its duration.
地狱火护甲
– Adds an armor buff for its duration.
烈火烙印
– Reduces a target’s damage done by 40% for 8 seconds.
Dodge – Reduces melee damage taken based on Agility.
Parry – Reduces melee damage taken based on Critical Strike chance.
Versatility – Reduces damage taken by half of its current percentage value.
Mobility –
地狱火撞击
,
滑翔
and
迅捷
provide an outstanding evasion tool kit.
In addition to your direct damage mitigation, the following spells and abilities enhance that mitigation:
荒宴
– Provides a chance to activate metamorphosis for 5 seconds.
完美愿景
(Secondary) – Reduces the cool down of Metamorphosis.
世界血脉共鸣
(Primary) - Provides an agility buff significantly increasing dodge.
Your cloak and trinkets - Provide an Agility buff significantly increasing dodge.
冲突与斗争
– Adds a stacking Versatility buff reducing damage taken.
勇卫之力
– Adds a stacking stamina buff.
Stamina – Increases your health pool allowing you to live through more damage.
You have several active healing abilities including:
吞噬灵魂
– Consume a lessor soul fragment healing you for 8% of all damage taken in the last 5 seconds.
灵魂裂劈
– Heal yourself for 105% attack power and consume 2 lessor soul fragments.
灵魂壁障
– Heal yourself for 500% attack power * percent health consuming up to 5 lessor soul Fragments. You can add to this shield by consuming more soul fragments while it is active.
精益求精
– Activating Metamorphosis, including through Gluttony, heals you for 5% of maximum health.
坚忍之力
– Provides a moderate heal when you dodge or parry an attack.
贩卖灵魂
– Consuming a soul fragment creates a damage absorption shield for 3 seconds.
In addition to these direct healing abilities you have several other spells and abilities that enhance them. Those spells and abilities include:
爆燃
– Immolation Aura’s initial damage has a chance to shatter lessor soul fragments.
破裂
– Shatter 2 lessor soul fragments from the target.
荒宴
– Activates Strive for Perfection.
精华割裂
– Fracture has a chance to shatter up to 4 lessor soul fragments from the target.
收割之刻
– Lessor soul fragments restore additional health and, after consuming 40 soul fragments, soul cleave will create a free soul barrier.
破碎灵魂
– Consume a full soul fragment for 348% of attack power.
Throughput (DPS)
Of all the tools in your kit, this section is the easiest and the most difficult. Easy because there are few buttons to press. Difficult because understanding how these buttons work together will pull your entire kit together.
地狱火撞击
– Also activates a Sigil of Flame and is off the global cool-down timer (GCD).
世界血脉共鸣
– A very large, long duration primary stat buff on a short cool down.
– Is reduced with Haste.
恶魔尖刺
– Activates Razor Spikes for a 15% physical damage buff, is off the GCD, and is reduced with Haste.
破裂
– Generates resource and is reduced with Haste.
灵魂裂劈
– Resource dump.
烈焰咒符
- Helps maintain aggro during the fight.
Making it Work
As we stated in the beginning of this guide, Vengeance Demon Hunter has an impressive tool kit. We also stated that it is easy to play with few high skill cap requirements. After reviewing the toolkit you might be wondering how we could make that statement. We are providing the following information to help you better understand how and why this build works.
Primary stat buffs
We utilize multiple primary stat buffs for their DPS benefit while at the same time providing you with a serious passive mitigation. Of the 3 primary stat buffs we recommended, only Worldvein Resonance is on-use.
Razor Spikes
Because we selected Flame Crash and Quickened Sigils as passive talents while using a high haste build, we can already maximize our uptime on Sigil of Flame. Your only requirement is not stacking Sigil of Flame during your DPS rotation and instead maximizing your uptime on Razor Spikes which is off the GCD. This build will provide you with a noticeable single target DPS increase while at the same time, because of high mastery, giving you an average of 70% to 85% physical damage reduction just by pressing the button on cool down.
Immolation Aura
Immolation aura is directly tied to Infernal Armor, Fallout, and Haste, providing a substantial DPS benefit with passive mitigation and active healing all with a single key press. Using this talent immediately before activating Soul Barrier will also generate incredible healing benefit in a single GCD.
Fracture and Soul Cleave
You are going to want to hit Soul Cleave as often as possible and Fracture allows you to do this. If used correctly Soul Cleave will be one of your three primary DPS generating abilities. Soul Cleave also provides a fair direct heal and helps you consume more soul fragments faster increasing your overall burst healing.
Passive Mitigation
If you review this guide you will quickly notice that most of the abilities we discuss are passive. Whether its dodge through Agility or parry through critical strike, we provided you with a DPS build that is easy to use. Beyond the basics, our talents work together passively to give you the ability to DPS your way through difficult situations and leverage substantial survivability along the way.
Summary - Being the Demon
If you are afraid to pull big because you might die in combat, don’t play Demon Hunter. They call it pain for a reason. The only way to survive as a Demon Hunter tank is to pull big, hit hard, and stand and fight. All of your spells and abilities except Soul Barrier have a DPS component. All of your spells and abilities scale off Attack Power. You need to DPS to heal. You need to proc offensive cool downs to get the most from your mitigation. Don’t be afraid to fight. Hit it like you mean it and you will be a successful Vengeance Demon Hunter.
Measurable Results
In the section on throughput we hinted at an opening rotation you can use for all scenarios with this build. We do believe however, that priorities and results are more important than rotation. With that in mind we are providing the following statistics to help you evaluate your performance.
1.
uptime = 50%
2.
恶魔尖刺
uptime = 45%
3.
灵魂裂劈
casts = 350
4.
灵魂残片
consumption = 1000 or fewer
5.
灵魂壁障
heals = 10 million
6. Physical Damage taken = 90%
7. Unmitigated damage taken overall = 15k or less
In this instance unmitigated damage taken specifically means the amount a healer had to heal you for. There is an unmitigated damage taken amount that is not healed but is the result of your parry chance. What we are looking for with this statistic is how hard your healer had to work to keep you alive.
One statistic that we purposely left off this list is average soul fragment heal. We know that people believe higher numbers are always better but in this instance we disagree. If you read the tool tip for Soul Fragments you will notice that it heals for 8% of all damage taken in the past 5 seconds.
Now consider what a tank having an average Soul Fragment heal of 25k to 30k actually means. That tank was consistently taking more damage which will most likely also be reflected in their unmitigated damage taken. In short, for mid-level (+15) keys, it means the tank is probably not using their entire tool kit including their substantial passive mitigation.
Does it work?
In all transparency, when we simulated this build it told us we had a 100% chance to die in a plus 15 dungeon. As an example of how well this build works, and because we believe they must think we run Mythic keys with 4 DPS and a tank, we asked our healer to tank a +16 key with it. Please check out or video to see if we asked the right robot.

I am really curious if this guide went thru anything resembling a curation process. This is some grade A false information

The Demon Hunter tanking guide is written for average players and built so you can easily accumulate the gear and stats. This build was evaluated and tested by multiple players in the current patch who regularly time Mythic+ 20 to 22 dungeons. The mathematics are accurate and the stat priority is based off what we believe is appropriate for a tank. The goal of the build is to reduce damage taken and provide excellent healing without sacrificing a huge amount of DPS or threat.
For more visible proof of how easy it is to play this build please review our included video evidence. Specifically, healing done on the first boss, damage taken on the second and third boss, and overall DPS. Keep in mind that a healer ran the build for us. It is our belief that if as a tank you play to all the strengths of your toon, you will time more dungeons and your healer and DPS will thank you.
Contributors to our guides include: people who have played these toons since their inception, players with 3k and up ratings in the current expansion, video game beta testers with more than 50 years combined experience, players who have ranked #1 on their realm or region for Mythic+ dungeons or #1 in the world for multiple bosses in Mythic raiding parse when they were actively tanking.
