Shadowlands for the casual player.
ABOUT ME:
I am a bit older player and have been in high end raiding guilds in other MMORPG like EQ and with WoW I converted to playing casual in 2004, in that time I took time off to raise kids, and now they are all older and it’s time to give back to the MMORPG. I know how hard it is for the casual player, I came back in BoA and it was the most difficult thing that I have ever done. You might be reading this and considering coming back or you did but feel overwhelmed with all the information on the weeks and things that the posts are calling must-dos. I have a happy ending for you, stay tuned.
Introducing Shadowlands
The timing of this post was intentional, and it was solely because I wanted to get deep enough in the game to give casual players a path to this expansion so that they can achieve a few basic things that I think the casual play wants:
Have fun: The casual play would like to come on and just have fun play and not have to spend a vast majority of the time trying to decide to do things. This means doing things take less time and getting rewards come easy.
Look good! Casual players like to have good gear with stats and ilvl numbers that will allow progression without a huge time investment.
Keep up! – Just because the casual player doesn’t play a lot they want to keep up and feel like they are adding to the experience. In my case, I have a lot of casual players in my group and we want to hang out and they don’t want to be way behind.
Shadowlands was what feels like a big shift from BoA, first the replacing of rep grind with renown and more currency types that are easy to collect and stockpile. The addition of a Covenant was a big + for the casual player and it really doesn’t pin you in.
Here is how it works, you have a covenant, and the game forces you through the storyline and that should be the absolute first step for you and try and stay focused on the campaign and the reasons for this is that you will have three things if you work your way through the quests.
Gear – the game if you work in the story will force your gear to keep up and there is nothing like the bonus of the gear upgrade.
5 player dungeons – There are quests and stories that take you into these zones as they unlock, and these stories allow you to do things in the zone on your own.
Anima and Conduits – Through the story and the zones you will level easily to the new cap of 60. You can start the storyline as early as level 48.
During this you will collect Anima and Conduits for the end of the story.
After traveling through all 4 new zones and the first stories in the Maw here is what the casual play can focus on:
Trying all the abilities that the four Covenants will give you, from experience for me and playing with other casual players by the end of the story they leaned to a Covenant that worked for the play style that fit them. Wowhead has great guides for the best in class. For the casual player here is a simplistic breakdown. Each Covenant has three soulbinds, these are characters that you bind within the story and you can channel abilities from. Soulbinds can be changed almost on the fly, although not all are amazing for all classes WoW made it so that each Covenant has something for all specs and players.
Collecting the anima from World Mobs and rare Mobs, these drop Anima and this is a currency in all covenants.
Torgast - The early layers of Torgast can be solo’d and I would suggest that you do the first layers on your own and learn and explore.
At first glance when we are all came online it maybe seemed like a huge task, the best thing I did for some players was to tell them not to focus on all the Week 1 or Week 2. That is for players that are giving it their all to be at the front of the game curve and this normally is not the casual player.
What WoW intentionally did or stumbled on to is a balance of making a competitive race to things like the world first race and giving the casual player a chance to enjoy the game. For the casual player, they made a system that supports their choice to play one character on a limited basis, once the story line is complete you can move right into the dungeons and even into heroic shortly after.
Things that are important are not back capped, meaning that if you start late catching up is inevitable my alt Hunter completed the Covenant line at renown 5 in week 2. In a few days of playing, it almost completely caught up with my main character.
Shadowlands Casual Player Checklist:
o Complete the starting campaign – Get through the story and there is a huge advantage in the game.
o Focus on anything that gives you Anima!
o You will have the basics of all the covenant, and you get a chance to try them all.
o You unlock all the dungeons and learn where they all are.
o You will get to lvl 60 with 144 ilvl – this important because of min ilvl for gear in normal dungeons.
o You DO NOT have to do any dungeons during the story and I would suggest not to.
o Select a Covenant that you liked to use there is a good chance that it will work just fine for your class and play style.
o In the Covenant complete all the story in your covenant and the reason is this will catch up your Renown with the covenant.
o Unlock the conduits, these are the extra powers that you collect and place into your soulbind table. These will stack if you collect multiples and they will level them up as you continue to stack them. (WoWHead again covers BiS for these)
Wow did some amazing things in Shadowlands and this is one, the Renown at launch was time-gated but is not back time-gated. In BoA if you didn’t get your rep done in a week you would not be able to go back and collect it.
WoW ditched that idea with Shadowlands, and you could grind up and catch people, Renown is based on story and Chapter progression. I could write a whole post on why this so good and how it works on all levels of the game from PvP to Alt’s and having a million classes that you all love.
o The Story will help you understand the mall hall of your covenant and learn what to upgrade and activate all tables.
o Anima is important so focus on dailies that give the following in priority:
Anima until weekly 1000 is collected (this is not a lot; I will show you how to get the 250 Anima quests)
This one is a split between conduits and reputation. I do conduits until I have them all collected on the map then rep. The reason is that there are two quests in Orbis each week that give 500 rep to any of the reps and I focus on that for rep.
PvP 250 weekly Anima – this is a no brainer if you are into PvP – also the weekly in the bank in the Orbis.
o Maw Dailies and story – Torgast and Soul Ash – Right now this is an item that is back gated as far as I can see, the reason it isn’t high on my list is to fold.
They are long for the most part – commit to 1-2 hours depending on the group.
in the future we are not going to be back locked and it will be farm status and as a casual player, it will be better to get in at that time.
That is all that I would focus on, if you do these things and then play the game to have fun here are some things that I think the casual player needs to progress through.
Understand the ilvl caps – This important since I have grouped with many players that shy away from doing mythic’s and other content because they are “not geared” or they “are not hardcore” the casual player can do mythic’s and even get high-level gear.
Do all the heroics and collect the gear from all of them – there is 35 Anima on each boss.
Collect the first 1250 Soul ash and make a legendary item. The item in week four would cost you anywhere from $9000 (cloth) - $100,000 (210 ilvl chain server dependent.)
Do Mythic dungeons it's so easy if you are doing heroics you can do the M0 runs and for the casual player just work up the ladder as you learn the mechanics they all get easy.
The rank system is back and better for the casual player – There is rank gear in Shadowlands for PvE, Class Covenant Sets, PvP rated and unrated.
There is no running around for it either, the rank is based on your Renown with the covenant and then the correct currency.
When you are starting a new Alt:
If you have completed the story and selected a covenant with a character, then starting an alt character is not an issue. You skip the story and can go right to the covenant selection then proceed to complete a series of % quests for each island.
As you unlock gear and quests you will unlock renown and tables, as an added plus you will unlock all the dailies that can go towards the % quests for each zone.
So casual player the conclusion is; pick one character and go to the end of the story and then have all the fun you would like – play an alt and start PvPing – collect gear and do the things that would like it all goes to the great good and if you want to catch up with the curve at any time you can.
I hope this helps you a bit. my groups in the premade finder are called "I PuG StuFF" join me for a run ;)
