Welcome to Wowhead's Rogue DPS Rotation & Abilities TBC Guide, updated for of Burning Crusade Classic. In this guide, you will learn how to minmax the abilities of your Rogue for both single target and AoE scenarios. We will also go in-depth on all Rogue abilities, Rogue cooldowns, Rogue procs, everything to teach you how to make the most from them, in order to be more efficient and effective in dungeons and raids for The Burning Crusade Classic.
Besides individual strengths, this guide goes over how it all connects and how to use all Rogue abilities in combat, both in Dungeons and Raid scenarios, so you can reach the peak performance with your Rogue, enabling you to use all tools from your kit.

Best PvE Rotation for Rogue DPS in Burning Crusade
In Burning Crusade the rogue serves as a melee damage dealer in a group. Your primary role is to deal damage and kill enemies, but you will occasionally have other responsibilities like stunning enemies with
肾击
or interrupting their spells with
脚踢
. On most bosses and some trash mobs, you will want to apply
破甲
with the
强化破甲
talent to increase your damage dealt and the damage of everyone else in your group.
A rogue will benefit greatly from being in the "melee group" in a raid. Rogues benefit immensely from
风怒图腾
from a

and
战斗怒吼
from a
战士
. Rogues also benefit from other classes like a Feral

A rogue's rotation in PvE revolves around maintaining the
切割
buff on yourself and the
破甲
debuff on your target. When you have extra energy or combo points, you can squeeze in a
割裂
or
刺骨
. The specific sequence of abilities used is somewhat fluid and varied based on the outcome of random events like
无情
or
作战潜能
triggers.
A good rogue will be able to adapt to these random events and plan ahead to ensure they have enough energy and combo points to do the finishing moves they want to do when they want to do them. This creates a very fun and engaging PvE experience that keeps you tuned in and paying attention all the time to maximize your performance.
Rogue DPS Standard Rotation
Most of your ability usage revolves around maintaining the
切割
buff on yourself and the
破甲
debuff on your target. When you have an excess of energy or combo points, you will use either
割裂
or
刺骨
. You will use
影袭
to generate combo points on your target to enable these finishing moves.
切割
切割
should be kept up as much as possible. This buff is a massive increase to your character's damage output and losing the buff for even a few seconds will negatively impact your performance. It is best to use high combo point values for
切割
as this is by far the best thing you can spend combo points on. When you refresh your
切割
buff, you should try to wait until the existing buff has less than 1 second remaining so that you waste as little of the previous cast as possible.
破甲
On pretty much all bosses you will want to use
破甲
to enhance the performance of every physical damage dealer in your party or raid. For trash mobs that live for more than 30 seconds, you ought to apply
破甲
as well. You will need to use 5 combo points for your applications of
破甲
since that reduces armor by the most. An
破甲
for 4 points or less will result in
less
armor reduction than 5 stacks of
破甲攻击
- and these two debuffs do not stack. If you do not have a
战士
in your party or raid (or they choose not to use
破甲攻击
), it is acceptable to use 3 or 4 point
破甲
on trash mobs - whatever you can get applied to the enemy quickly.
For both
切割
and
破甲
you will need to monitor the remaining duration and plan ahead to be sure you can refresh them on time. Going for a big
刺骨
can be tempting, but if it compromises your uptime on
切割
or
破甲
it is not a good idea. For
破甲
you will need to have 5 combo points ready when you need to refresh it. For
切割
it is
ideal
to use it with 5 combo points, but it is okay to use it with fewer than 5 points in a pinch.

Either
割裂
or
刺骨
should be used when you have an excess of energy or combo points beyond what you need to maintain
切割
and
破甲
. This can happen due to a string of lucky
无情
or

triggers. Which one you should use depends on a few different factors. Generally you want to use high combo points values for each of these, and the minimum you should use is 3 points.
If you are hitting two targets with
剑刃乱舞
, you should always do
刺骨
.
刺骨
hits both targets, while
割裂
does not.
If your target will not live for the full duration of
割裂
, then you should use
刺骨
.
If your target already has your
割裂
active, you should not overwrite the old one. If you can, wait until the previous
割裂
expires, otherwise use
刺骨
.
In just about every other situation,
割裂
is the superior choice.
A typical opening sequence on a boss would be
影袭
into a 1 point
切割
, then build to 5 points with more
影袭
s. Use a 5 point
破甲
, then get as many combo points as you can with more
影袭
s and refresh
切割
before it expires.
From there you proceed by looking at your current energy, combo points,
切割
duration, and
破甲
duration to decide what to do next. If you have plenty of duration on
切割
and
破甲
and plenty of energy, you can try to squeeze in a
割裂
. If your energy, combo points, and/or duration on
切割
and
破甲
are low, you won't be able to fit in a
割裂
before needing to refresh
切割
or
破甲
.
Sometimes you will have all your combo points for your next finishing move ready, but the previous cast of it still has a few seconds duration left. As long as you don't reach maximum energy it is a good idea to wait a few seconds so that you refresh your
切割
or
破甲
when the previous cast has just a fraction of a second left.
It is a good idea to practice this on a target dummy to get a feel for when you can fit in a
割裂
and how to juggle your
切割
and
破甲
. The random nature of
无情
,

, and
无情打击
make it impossible to prescribe an exact sequence of abilities to be used.
Rogue DPS Cooldown Usage
Rogues have very many powerful cooldown abilities that can be used to temporarily enhance their damage output. Proper use of your cooldowns can make a significant difference in overall damage output. When using cooldowns you will still continue to keep up
切割
and
破甲
and generally continue your normal rotation. You may have a lot more excess energy, so you can expect to use some
割裂
or
刺骨
.
The first rule of cooldown usage is to use them often. The more often you use them, the more activations you get and the more total damage you deal. The second rule of cooldown usage is to use multiple cooldowns at the same time. Most cooldown effects will generate more total damage if they are used at the same time as other cooldowns.

Using multiple cooldown abilities at the same time will result in more total damage compared to using them one at a time. This is because the total damage gain from each cooldown will be increased by the effects of the other cooldowns.

makes you hit more often and

makes each hit deal more damage, so using them together means you receive that bonus damage per hit on
more
hits.
The most important cooldown of all of these is
剑刃乱舞
when you are able to hit two targets. Using
剑刃乱舞
to hit two targets
more than doubles
your damage output for those precious 15 seconds. You want to use every other cooldown you have available when you can hit two targets with
剑刃乱舞
- there is no better time to use them.
Many boss encounters only involve one enemy, so you won't be worrying about hitting two targets with
剑刃乱舞
. It is still good to use all your cooldowns together, but you may want to wait for a triggered buff to occur like the effect from
星界螺旋
and then use all your cooldowns. This way you will have more buffs used at the same time which means more total damage and more value from each individual buff. There is some risk to this though - if you get unlucky and it takes a while before you get that triggered buff, you will have delayed activating your other cooldowns and possibly reduced the total number of uses you will get from them.
Abilities for Rogue DPS in Burning Crusade
Combo Point Generators
影袭
Sinister Strike is the combo point builder ability that will be used by Combat Swords talent specialization rogues in PvE. It offers solid damage and a combo point for only 40 energy.

Backstab is the combo point builder that will be used by Combat Dagger talent specialization rogues in PvE. It requires you to use a dagger weapon in your mainhand and requires you to be positioned behind your target. The damage per energy spent on Backstab is superior to
影袭
, but Backstab only offers 1 combo point per 60 energy spent. This means Backstab users can do far fewer powerful finishing moves compared to
影袭
users.

Subtlety Talent
Hemorrhage is a very strong combo point builder ability used mostly by PvP Shadowstep talent specialization rogues. It offers great damage and a combo point for only 35 energy. This allows the rogue to generate a lot of combo points and do lots of powerful finishing moves. Typically PvE rogues do not use Hemorrhage because it is positioned too deep in the Subtlety tree to be worth getting.

Assassination Talent
Mutilate is an exceptionally powerful combo point builder used by Assassination talent specialization rogues. Mutilate requires the rogue to have a dagger in both hands and be behind their target to use it. The damage dealt per energy spent is the best of all four main combo point builders. Mutilate generates 2 combo points for only 60 enery, making it also the most efficient in terms of combo point generation.
So why isn't everyone Assassination spec for Mutilate? Unfortunately it is at the bottom of the Assassination tree and the talents in that tree are weaker than what is offered in Combat for PvE and weaker than what is in Subtlety for PvP.
Finishing Moves
切割
Slice and Dice is the best finishing move for increasing your personal damage output in PvE. The damage gained from increased attack speed completely surpasses the damage gain from any other finishing move. Slice and Dice is only occasionally used in PvP because you usually will not expect to be continuously attacking a target for the duration of Slice and Dice.
破甲
Expose Armor doesn't increase your personal damage quite as much as
切割
, but it will also increase the physical damage output of everyone else in your group. In raids or parties with other physical damage dealers, Expose Armor becomes more important than
切割
for total group damage output.
割裂
Rupture is a good finishing move to use in PvE when you have an excess of energy or combo points, more than is needed to maintain
切割
and
破甲
. Rupture is useful because the damage it deals is not reduced by your target's armor, but also Rupture cannot ever be a critical hit. In PvP you may use Rupture against high armor targets like Warriors or Shamans, or use the bleed damage to prevent an enemy rogue from restealthing and escaping.

Similar to

, Eviscerate is a good finishing move to use in PvE when you have an excess of energy or combo points, more than is needed to maintain

and
破甲
. Unlike
割裂
, Eviscerate's damage
is reduced
by your target's armor, but also Eviscerate can score a critical hit for bonus damage.

Kidney Shot is a powerful ability that stuns your target, preventing them from taking any action and preventing them from dodging your attacks. It is rarely used in PvE, but is very frequently a source of frustration for the rogue's enemies in PvP.

Deadly Throw offers the rogue a ranged damaging ability that also slows the target for a few seconds. Deadly Throw is great to catch up to your target in PvP when they manage to run away and get out of melee range. Most of the glove armor gained from PvP Arenas or Battlegrounds (like

) will have a bonus for Deadly Throw that causes it to also interrupt spell casting, which makes Deadly Throw useful in even more situations.

Envenom is a finishing move that deals instant damage similar to
刺骨
. In most situations Envenom is worse than
刺骨
because Envenom removes your

stacks from the target. Because of this, Envenom is typically not used.
Stealth Openers
Stealth openers are generally not used in PvE because they require you to be in stealth to use them. This makes you take more time to run up to your target, and reduces the number of auto attacks you can do. None of the stealth openers deal enough damage to be worth it in terms of damage - you'll only use these when you need some stun or crowd control from them.
In PvP stealth openers are used all the time and a large part of your play revolves around being able to restealth to use more opener abilities.

Cheap Shot is a great stealth opener for PvP, stunning the target and giving you a few combo points. Most PvP rogues will have the
卑鄙
talent to reduce the cost of Cheap Shot to only 40 energy, as well as the
先发制人
talent to often gain 3 combo points from Cheap Shot instead of 2. These talents together make Cheap Shot an insanely strong ability in PvP.

Sap is a powerful crowd control ability that is useful in dungeons and very often good in PvP. Sap does not make the rogue leave stealth like most of the stealth abilities - it can be used and you will remain in stealth.

Garrote is rarely used in PvE because without
裂伤(熊)
, Garrote deals less damage per energy than
影袭
. With
裂伤(熊)
, Garrote is only on par with
影袭
but it requires you to be in stealth.
In PvP there are many times you would want to use Garrote. You may want to use the bleed debuff to prevent an enemy rogue from restealthing and escaping, or you may use the silence effect against an enemy caster.
伏击
Ambush is a burst damage ability that requires the use of a dagger weapon in your main hand. It is typically not used in PvE or PvP because it is one of the weakest stealth opening abilities.
Utility & Defensive Abilities
毒刃
Shiv is an excellent utility ability that grants a combo point and is guaranteed to trigger your off hand poison. In PvE this can be used to "save" a five stack of
致命药膏 VII
that is about to expire. In PvP Shiv will be used very frequently in combination with off hand weapon switches (with different poisons) to force very many different poison debuffs on to your target.

Gouge is a strong ability to temporarily disable an opponent. It can be used as temporary crowd control or to interrupt spells being cast. Gouge is typically not used in a PvE situation as you have plenty of more efficient crowd control and interrupt abilities for those more controlled environments.

Cloak of Shadows is an absolute all-star defensive ability for rogues. It will remove all magic debuffs, curses, poisons, and diseases on the rogue at a moment's notice and provides greatly increased chance to resist incoming spells for a few seconds. Smart use of this ability in PvP can give you a big advantage over enemy casters like

s and
术士
s. In PvE you can use Cloak of Shadows to avoid enemy spells that might otherwise cause you to need to run away or be stunned and stop dealing damage.

Blind is an immensely powerful crowd control ability in PvP situations. It is ranged, instant cast, 10 second duration, and only 90 seconds cooldown if you take 2 ranks of the
飘忽不定
talent. In PvP 10 seconds is a long time, but in PvE it is less significant. You will find use for Blind in some dungeon groups in a pinch but it is not an absolute monster of an ability like it is in PvP.
疾跑
Sprint is a great mobility ability that all rogues can use. In PvE it should be used to get to your targets faster so you can start dealing damage sooner. This may be because the raid moved ahead of you and you didn't keep up, or because an enemy has an ability that forces you to move around. In PvP Sprint can be used to catch up to players who are trying to get away from you like

Evasion is a strong defensive ability against physical attackers. This can be used in PvE to allow you to safely damage enemies that use Cleave or Whirlwind attacks. In PvP this is great against enemy rogues and other physical damage dealers to make it extra difficult for them to take you down. Remember that you cannot dodge an attack that comes from behind you, so you will always need to spin to be sure you are facing your attacker if you want Evasion to help you.

Vanish allows the rogue to enter stealth while in combat. In PvE it causes all enemies to lose all threat against the rogue and is a useful tool to control your threat to be sure you the tank remains the focus of enemy attacks. Vanish also removes all movement impairing effects which is very useful in PvP and occasionally useful in PvE.
If the rogue has any damage over time effects on them, you will be pulled right back out of stealth after Vanish when those deal damage. If you are quick with your fingers you can sometimes Vanish and immediately
偷袭
even with damage over time effects active on yourself.
暗影步
Subtlety Talent
Shadowstep is an absolute all-star mobility ability. With such a short cooldown this makes it very difficult for enemies to successfully disengage from the rogue. This is the cornerstone of the most competitive PvP Subtlety builds for rogues in arenas. It is typically not accessible to rogues with a PvE talent specialization because Subtlety does not offer very much for PvE rogues.

Distract is a unique ability that causes every enemy in the radius to turn and look at the center point where you cast Distract for 10 seconds. Distract will only effect targets that are not in combat. Enemy monsters in PvE will stand still for 10 seconds which is useful for delaying patrols or making enemies look another way as you sneak past them. In PvP this causes players to stop and turn to look at the point. If the players were holding down a "walk forward" input, they will continue walking forwards towards the center of the Distract. Often times this will take players a second to readjust their movement and Distract can sometimes be used to catch up to someone who is running around.
脚踢
Kick is a great spell interrupt ability on a short 10 second cooldown. It is essential to use against any spell caster players in PvP. Many PvE dungeons and raids have spell caster enemies as well with powerful spells that the rogue can stop from happening with a well-timed Kick.
潜行
Stealth is a cornerstone of the entire rogue class. You are only allowed to enter stealth when you are out of combat. While stealthed, enemy monsters and players might not be able to see you and you will move slightly slower. Higher level enemies and enemies who are looking towards you have a higher chance of detecting you while in stealth. Being in stealth allows the use of powerful stealth opener abilities like
偷袭
.

Pick Pocket is a rogue ability that can be used while stealthed. You can pick the pockets of many humanoid type enemies if you can sneak up without being seen. This will give you a few extra coins or a chance at some unique items that can only be found via Pick Pocketing.
