If there were one thing that I had been biting my nails in anticipation for as a hunter, its more rare pets. Well, we've finally got em' ...and with a fun new twist! These pets need to be tracked down...literally. These beasts have long, windy patrol routes where they will leave tracks behind them as they walk. Each rare has their own unique track, and here's the kicker...the pets are completely stealthed! Another interesting thing to note, is that both tracks and the pets are
only visible to hunters
!
How to Track Them
In order to locate these pets, you will need to find and follow their tracks. Once you've found a set of tracks you'll need to follow them until you don't see any more. This is where I like to wait and watch where I think that they'll be walking next. Often times you'll see a new track appear right in front of you - this means you've found who you've been tracking!
Once you think you know where the beast is, your going to have to get it to walk through a
Flare
. Don't throw your flare down on top of the track that was just just left, throw it a little further out in front of where you think the next one may appear. When the beast walks through your flare it will become visible.
You can take this opportunity to tame, or you can throw a
Hunter's Mark
on it - which will allow you to see your target, even when it goes back into stealth. Hunter's Mark will make him visible to you, but only you when he's in stealth.
PATCH 6.0.2 UPDATE: Since you can no longer use Hunter's Mark on these beasties, it seems that we can now use
Freezing Trap
to stop them in their tracks.
Their tracks do not stay up indefinitely; the furthest ones behind disappear one by one as new tracks are created where the beast is walking. Each track will stay up for about five minutes after being created. The tracks are still a bit buggy, and from my experience so far
all tracks need to be followed BACKWARDS
(UPDATE: ALL tracks are now facing the correct direction)
in order to find the beast making them. Some of the tracks also spawn in under ground, and others float strangely over the terrain making them even more difficult to find.
Their Paths
These beasts each have a set path that they follow. Some of their paths are longer than others (here's looking at you
Patrannache
!) If nobody has tamed them before they reach the end of their paths, they simply turn around 180 degrees and start walking the path again in the opposite direction.
The most difficult tracks for me to follow were Patrannach's Barely-Visible Tracks and Savage's Bloody Tracks. The reason for this was because they blended in so well with the terrain, and because each had occasional missing tracks. One thing that helped out a LOT when looking for any of the tracks was to
put ground clutter on the lowest setting
.
The Nitty-Gritty
There are nine pets altogether
There are ten pets now with the addition of Bombyx the Silkworm in patch 5.1, with at least one in each zone. They all have unique skins (except for Patrannache thanks to the Timeless Isle), and they range in level, with the lower level ones naturally residing in the lower level zones. They are classified as elites with golden dragons around their portraits, and although they do hit hard most people shouldn't have trouble with them. (I tamed Savage with a level 85 hunter, and he still didn't get me lower than 60% health without a frost trap or deterrence up.)
So without further adieu, let me introduce these new pets in order by zone. ~
Name:
Glimmer
(Water Strider) **Exotic pet
Track type: Flooded Tracks
Level: 85
Location: Paths from The Arboretum all the way to Nectarbreeze Orchard.
Glimmer's tracks are not particularly difficult to find toward either end of his path. They are light in color on ground that is dark green through most of his path, making them stand out a bit.
Glimmer's path is the shortest compared to all of the other trackable hunter pets. It takes him about 27 minutes to move from one end of the path to the other. Although a short path is good news,
Glimmer's path seems to be highly affected by phasing
. As a matter of fact, about half of his path goes through several phased areas including: Fox Grove, Orchid Hollow, Shadybranch Pocket and Serpent's Heart. When he walks into these phased areas you will not be able to see or interact with him or even see his tracks. I was able to track him through his whole path using eagle eye from unphased areas.
I marked the phased area on the map below. The best bet to nab this guy is to search either end of his path for tracks (red line on map). If there are no tracks at either end, wait about 15 minutes and check again; there is a good chance he was passing through the phased area. If you still don't see tracks he's probably not up.
Name:
Savage
(Cat)
Track type: Bloody Tracks
Level: 85
Location: He patrols from the eastern side of the zone near Emperor's Omen all the way to the western side . (See map below for his exact path.)
Savage's tracks are green & brown in color and only slightly darker than the ground he walks across in several areas. His tracks were one of the tougher sets for me to find, especially in the shaded areas he patrols through. If your serious about finding this pretty kitty it is absolutely crucial that you turn ground clutter on the lowest setting.
Savage's Path starts just north of Emperor's Omen right next to the waterfall. From that point he travels generally toward the southwest (after he makes his loop north of The Aboretum). His path ends at an overlook in The Thunderwood. From that overlook you can see Nectarbreeze Orchard. It takes him exactly 36 minutes to move from one end of the path to the other.
Name:
Patrannache
(Crane)
Track type: Barely-Visible Tracks (and they really are BARELY visible...)
Level: 86
Rough Location: He has an incredibly long and windy patrol route through a very good portion of The Valley of the Four Winds. (See map below for exact path.) Luckily he can be tamed by hunters in any spec, and once found he makes a unique pet that really stands out.
Unfortunately Patrannache can be quite difficult to track down. I definitely found him to be the toughest of these new hunter pets to find without a doubt. Patrannache's tracks are very aptly named, because they really are "barely visible". They are very small, and blend right into the ground for most of his path. If you want any hope at all of finding these tracks it is an absolute necessity to turn ground clutter down to a minimum. I also found it helpful to hover my mouse over different anomalies in the terrain that I was scouring over so that the name of his tracks would pop up if I'd come across one. The best advice I think I can give when looking for his tracks is to take it slow, and check each area thoroughly. It is very easy to scan the terrain with your eyes and miss his tracks entirely - which may actually be right in front of you.
Patrannache's Path is hands down the longest and windiest of all the trackable hunter pets introduced in MoP. His path starts in the far east next to a tree by a small hill covered in grass and bushes. From there he heads west and literally winds his way through most of the zone. He walks through highly traveled quest areas, open empty fields, swims across water, he really does just walk all over the place. His path ends roughly in the middle of the zone, south of The Heartland just before the roads intersect. It takes him about 1 hour and 38 minutes to move from one end of the path to the other.
Name:
Bloodtooth
(Turtle)
Track type: Muddy Tracks
Level: 87
Location: Can be found patrolling along the shoreline and small islands in the southern part of Krasarang Wilds. (See map below for his exact path.)
Bloodtooth's tracks are quite dark in color and he mostly walks along a fairly light surface, making them one of the easier sets of tracks to find. Be aware - he does patrol through the water quite a bit, so if you're tracking him and lose sight - don't forget to check the water!
Bloodtooth's path runs from Angler's Wharf on the eastern end of the zone, all the way to the wall that separates the Dread Wastes from Krasarang Wilds, called "The Southern Wall". It takes him exactly 40 minutes to move from one end to the other.
Name:
Bombyx
(Silkworm) **Exotic Pet
(This pet was introduced in Patch 5.1)
Track Type: Heavily-Chewed Silkweed
Level: 90
Location: You can find him moving very sporadically around the Krasarang River northeast of Dawnchaser Retreat.
Like the other nine beasts, Bombyx is stealthed and leaves tracks that can only be seen by hunters. His tracks however are unlike anything we've seen so far. He doesn't leave actual footprints as tracks, he instead leaves a trail of Heavily-Chewed Silkweed (pictured on the right in the screenshot above.) Unfortunately because these "tracks" are basically a small tuft of flowers (and look just like a smaller version of the
Silkweed
herb), they do not point in a particular direction. This makes determining the direction that Bombyx is travelling incredibly difficult.
As if not knowing which direction he were moving weren't difficult enough, he also moves VERY sporadically. He twists and turns, doubles back repeatedly and even stops in place for lengthy periods of time. When looking for him, you may notice that there are Heavily-Chewed Silkweed tracks all over the place. Where does one even start looking for this guy?!
Well, I can't give you a precise map like I did with the other nine pets, but I can point you in the right direction. You should begin your search for Heavily-Chewed Silkweed within the small purple circle that I marked on the map below. I watched Bombyx for quite a while, and he never left this area in the time I spent watching him.
I also noticed that he seems to have a favorite spot that he likes to re-visit more often than other locations. He occasionally hangs out at the base of two large trees, right between the roots at 32.6, 48.46. I circled the exact spot in yellow on the screenshot below. I also circled the ridiculous amount of Heavily-Chewed Silkweed everywhere to give you a better idea as to just how sporadic his tracks are. The tracks on the right, and in front of Bombyx in the screenshot below had been there for about 3 minutes before the shot was taken. The tracks right behind him he had just left as I snapped the shot.
If your having trouble locking down exactly where he is, I would advise tossing a flair at that location and waiting patiently for his return.
Name:
Bristlespine
(Porcupine)
Track type: Puzzling Tracks
Level: 88
Location: Through a large part of the Yaungol Advance, moving past Westwind Rest, the Kota Base Camp, One Keg and the Grummle Bazaar.
Bristlespine's tracks are dark green in color and most of his path is along dark brown grass, making them a little difficult to spot at times. His tracks are definitely easier to find if ground clutter is turned down to the lowest setting.
The Southern end Bristlespine's path starts on the Auburn Bluffs overlooking the sea and The Jade Forest. From there he basically makes a large oval through the entire southern half of the zone until he reaches the northern Auburn Bluffs, just south of the Temple of the White Tiger. It takes him about 45 minutes to move from one end of the path to the other.
Name:
Stompy
(Goat)
Track type: Heavy Tracks
Level: 88
Location: He has a very windy patrol route up and around the mountains. As a matter of fact, in several places he can even be found walking almost completely vertical as he moves up and down the mountainside. (See map below for his exact path.)
Stompy's tracks are dark green in color and almost his entire path is on white snow, making his tracks quite easy to spot. As a matter of fact, Stompy's tracks were probably the easiest of all the trackable hunter pets for me to find.
Stompy's Path starts in the mountains northwest of One Keg, and from there he heads northwest up Mount Neverest. When he gets close to the mountain top, he turns around and heads back down the mountain. He then continues northwest until he nears the Shado-Pan Monastery where he starts heading generally southwest. His path ends just north of the Winter's Blossom base camp and quest hub. It takes him about 39 minutes to move from one end of the path to the other.
Name:
Rockhide the Immovable
(Basilisk)
Track type: Worn Tracks
Level: 89
Location: Through the middle of the mainland in Townlong Steppes. (See map below for his exact path.)
Rockhide's tracks are fairly dark in color, and so is most of the ground that he's walking on - making them a little harder to find. I definitely recommend turning off ground clutter for this beast.
Rockhide's path starts from the edge of the cliff overlooking the sea directly west of Fire Camp Osul. It then moves southeast until reaching Lower Sumprushes where the path turns and begins to move southwest and eventually ending just west of Sik'Vess right next to a large stone tower. It takes him exactly 29 minutes to move from one of the path to the other.
Name:
Hexapos
(Water Strider) **Exotic pet
Track type: Mysterious Tracks
Level: 90
Location: Long patrol route through northern, eastern and southern Dread Wastes (see map below for exact path).
His tracks are fairly light in color compared to the dark ground that he's walking on - making them a little easier to find in my opinion.
Hexapos' path starts from the the very northwest part of The Briny Muck, where the Venomous Ledge and the Stinging Trail Meet. He heads east for the first third of his path, until he reaches the Chittering Coast and veers north. He continues north until he makes a loop just east of Kypari'Vor. From there he moves west across the length of the zone until he reaches the edge of a cliff in Rikkilea. It takes him around 50 minutes to move from one end of the path to the other.
Name:
Portent
(Quilen) **Exotic pet
(Comes in FOUR different colors: purple, blue, green and red)
Track type: Dusty Tracks
Level: 90
Location: He literally walks through just about the entire zone (see exact path on map below).
Portent is an exotic beast, therefore he can only be tamed by hunters that are specced Beast Mastery. Like
Madexx
, the scorpid in Uldum, he can spawn in several different colors. In Portent's case, he spawns in four: blue, red, purple and green. Each color is unique, and the color he spawns in is totally random.
His tracks are dark brown in color and almost his entire path is on bright yellow ground, making his tracks one of the easier sets to find. Although they do stand out well, I still recommend turning the ground clutter option down to low to make finding them a little easier.
Portent's Path starts on Autumnshade Ridge, just northeast of The Gate of the Setting Sun. He turns around there just in front of the elite quest npc Bai-Jin the Butcher. From there he winds his way through pretty much the entire zone heading in a mostly eastward direction until he reaches the wall just north of Mogu'Shan Palace. It takes him about 32 minutes to move from one end of the path to the other.
Update: Portent's path remains nearly the same since the changes in the Vale took place. One noticeably nice change is that there is one area where he can easily be found if he happens to be passing through, and that is the path running along the southern side of the Big Blossom Excavation. He literally follows the exact path there.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, suggestions and feedback are always welcome. =)

Great guide! I can't imagine I'll be tracking down all of these pretties, but at least Savage and the turtle I want to have.
Thanks for giving this to me and all other hunters who are simply so lazy that we don't even bother unless someone sticks it beneath our noses!

What a brilliant guide. Without stumbling across this, I would never have learnt about the new rare hunter pets and I would have remained mystified about the paw prints I keep seeing around the place! I thought they were simply aesthetic details for the environment.
Stunningly useful maps and explanations. I am very curious about what the respawn rate might be.

This guide is well worth looking at if you would like the new rare pets.
If only i saw this guide before i spent hours trying to figure out how the tracks worked / the path the rares follow. With this guide, you shouldn't have any problems at all like i did.

Great guide, yet I still don't believe how easy it was to tame all of these. I'm a bit disappointed.

Hexapos grants "surface trot" which allows water walking and "still water" which is a passive party/raid buff of 10% to spell power and 5% to critical strike.

Awesome guide. Stumbled across Portent's tracks and was able to tame him. I will note that at first I was following the tracks backwards as noted but came up empty. I did notice that while on the path the tracks would go back and forth. Maybe a bug? When I finally tamed him the tracks were going in the correct direction of his path. I was actually tracking for my wife who also plays but she was taking her sweet time so I have a new pet and now sleeping on the couch. :)

I wonder if the footprints being backwards was a mistake by Blizzard.... or if its a reference to what I think was an old Dr Seuss creation... it was a Bear but its feet were backwards so it looked like it was walking one way only it was going another; It was supposed to be an "Untrackable" animal. I cant remember what the bear was called, but it was a kids book that I remember from loooong ago that was filled with lots of strange animal creations... my elementary school had it years ago and I cant remember if it was actually written by Dr. Seuss or another strange author lol...
I know for sure I have seen an Alice in Wonderland ref. and a LOST ref. in Mist of Pandaria. And blizzard has literally referenced dozens of pop culture and historical ref. so anythings possible.

I've caught spirit beasts in Wrath, FL rares in Cata and now a couple of the Pandarian rare pets. I have to say that Pandaria has nailed it! I love the fact that addons can't alert you to tracks appearing. Hunters actually need to locate the tracks themselves and HUNT down their quarry. This is the most like hunters our class has ever been! :)

Awesome guide this is! Really helped me out and I just tamed Savage.
I found the prints rather quickly as he was up at the time. Then I suddenly lost all the tracks and got very frustrated trying to find them again. Thought someone just tamed him, but then I just had to check if he would still be around, and found the tracks again north of Arboretum, I followed the tracks right way
(not backwards
,
this probably means that Blizz have fixed the tracks
) and then I lost them again... I waited for a second and saw a new print appear right infront of me. Got kinda excited at that point, flared and tried to tame him, when I noticed I had my gorilla pet out. Well, I paniced a bit trying to get my current pet away from Savage. Well I forgot to mark him and he disappeared again. Then I waited for new footprint and flared again (I made sure I didnt have pet summoned now), marked and tamed. He just kept walking forward while I was taming so didnt even take damage.
Now happy with my new awesome looking cat! :)
Again, thank you for this guide, very helpful!

I assumed the backwards walking was because of a trait of I believe certain foxes, who would backtrack...so anyone tracking them would come to an end point, including dogs.

Ok as of Nov. 27th on Kirin Tor, Glimmer's tracks are still backwards! Been tracking her upon occasion sometimes for a few hours at a time, since someone posted that all the pets tracks are forwards now. Nu...uh! This one is still backwards at least on our realm.

By the way if you throw out a flare and see the pet, target it, hunter's mark and hit with one shot then he doesn't disappear when he walks out of the flare. That then gives you ample time to put a pet away and get prepared. What I found when tracking with a friend or two, which can help if you don't get the mark on him fast enough...is that multiple hunters can mean multiple flares and its very helpful if you aren't sure of the exact path in wider areas....as he disappears when walking out of the flare and you can lose the tame if it isn't completed (and the cd of the flare is too long that's for certain)... If another hunter in your party has him marked you may not be able to tame it until the other hunter somehow gets his mark off or you take aggro away. In one case I had to log out to take my mark off Bristlespine so the other hunter who was going to tame could get his mark on. Once the flare dies out, only the hunter whose mark (and tag shot) is on him can see him. For solo hunting all you need to remember is target, hunter's mark and tag shot.

Just tamed Patrannache. The tracks were backwards AND forward. I got him when he was starting his circuit over from his start point. The track i first saw was backwards so i tracked back towards his starting spot and spammed flare/ice trap..took about 2 minutes and he popped in my trap and was coming from his start point which i was surprised by. After taming i looked for tracks coming that way to verify, but the tracks i found were in the correct direction. So my theory is that if he is backtracking they will be backwards, but if he is starting over they will be in the correct direction. Which would suck if it's true and could lead to people losing him. But frankly i do not care and am happy my camping is done and i will not spend more time testing this theory

I just tamed Patrannache 1/8/2013. Tracks were still backwards heading from her western starting point "towards" the eastern one. She does move faster than the others. Seems like she tends to walk near plains hawks and sleeping wolves.
Tamed her near the Tiller/Ironpaw daily quests after she exited the marshes and was heading south along the cliff line around where a couple of herds of shaghorn goats wander.

I was tracking some of these rare pets the other day. I noticed the tracks face the correct direction to the way the rare pet is moving. Anyone else can confirm this change? / Or have noticed this.
(
Before you had to follow the tracks backwards
)
I will edit, or remove if the information if incorrect. Please feel free to comment, only if you have tracked these rare pets lately.

Tracked him for about 45 mins.Easy enough to tame, but u have to watch for all the Lvl 90 mobs that it travels through, if u keep an eye on him u can get it into a good clearing to tame.Good Luck Guys. 6 down 4 to go. Really need more space in my stable for more pets 20 isn't enough now and dont really wanna delete some of them.

3/4/2013 Again for clarity, Pattrannache tracks are still backwards. What a mess that makes, as one hunter swore they were frontwards now and the other insisted they were not based on comments here. They went backwards. Tamed just before midnight Kirin Tor. Backtracking :) lovely pink belf female pet.

I am so glad I found this forum. Only having space for 25 pets it only makes sense to stable rare pets only. I have the purple skin Portent and would like to have the blue also. Tracking him was a brain twister as I tamed my pet before the fix and had to figure out that his tracks were backwards on my own, but that just made the hunt much more fun :) now I can also add the others to my stable and abandon all my common variety pets. Thanks Guys.

(Patrannache)Yes so far the hardest to track down.. :P However there is a choke point in his trail that is more narrow then the flair effect area. It is located on the southeast end of the Singing Marshes, rather close to the end of the trail so if you miss him going one way he will be back in about 15 min. (supposing he is going south when you miss him). It gets boring but don't let down your guard he moves fast, keep that flair up and you can't miss.

The map is good but since the patch, Portent doesn't travel on the left side of the road on the road right of the Golden Pagoda. He travels down the right side of the road and below the excavation site now since the Horde took to excavating his old pathway to get to the Heart of Pandaria.
Other than that this was and is an amazing guide. Thanks for making it!

There is a very helpful waypoint list on the wowhead entry for patrannache, and they suggest using paste from curse. I did so but found Tom Tom a bit too fussy for the number of way points and it was too slow to follow the waypoints. so deleted 3 out of every 4 and reduced the waypoint list greatly. Then bobs for uncle found the little blighted and tamed him today.

I was searching like mad for the time it took for the different pets to complete a walk from one end to the other. This is the only place I have found that data.
Thank you :)

I love this guide, very nice and detailed :)
my question however, is the quillen pet still available in the now destroyed version of the vale?

Unfortunately for those who want their pet to be unique (and fortunately for those who don't want to put in the effort), they made most of the cranes on Timeless Isle to have the same exact skin as Patrannache.

A really easy way to get this pet is to use freeze trap on the quest tiger in the pit - then tame it - its the same one as the rare tiger!

I gave up. I found Patrannache. But the various others that have phasing issues are a clear sign that this is just to make you play the game more like those stupid coin eating arcade machines. The tracks are super inaccurate. I find tracks, then no tracks, flare, nothing, then tracks disappear, new tracks won'T show up, by the time you find next tracks, there are like 5 new.
I'm not paying for poor design.

Just wanted to add my thanks to everyone else's for this wonderful guide! I have tamed all but Patrannache (sp?), and he is being quite elusive. Just wanted to add a note about Portent in the Vale. I found the easiest place to tame him is on the narrow ridge right after the big scar with the bad guys. The flare won't miss him, and he was going through that area every hour and 20 minutes, give or take a few minutes. I would find his tracks and move ahead of it, throw the flare, and wait for him to walk through it. Tamed 3 of the 4 colors in one afternoon doing it that way. So, at 1:20, 2:20, 3:20, I found his tracks at the edge of the scar or before he got to the ridge on the way back. After the first one I tamed, he was coming from the temple when I tamed the other two.

Just tamed Patrannache
June 30th 2014.
Tracks are working correctly, facing the way he/she is heading.
Just thought I'd let you all know :D

awesome does not even come close to what this tutorial is to me. I see in a couple of places comments made to the affect that a couple of the rare pets benefit raid groups or party groups, is there a list or site that tells all that for all the rare pets? thanks and keep up the good work

This guide was super helpful! The path for Savage was really accurate and I was able to find him and tame him within an hour. Thanks so much.

Took me around 20 minutes to find Portent's tracks, he must stay in your flare for you too tame him or he disappears. Got myself the pretty red one! Good luck, happy hunting :)

I made a mistake in not taming all of these guys before the 6.0 patch, wherein they removed hunters mark which made the actual taming process much simpler, after the difficult tracking process.
I just tamed the ones I was missing, and I have to say without hunters mark it is in fact much trickier. You need to have the beast walk through the longest stretch of your flare radius to have JUST enough time to get the tame off. It took multiple attempts on each one to get the timing right.
just wanted to give the heads up that these tames are much more difficult post patch, but still doable. Any abilities that shorten the tame time would help immensely of course, but I did it with just the lesser glyph, no other haste buffs.

Just tracked down Portent today to try taming without hunters mark and using
冰冻陷阱
instead. Worked perfectly and gives you enough time to tame them. I have only tried it on Portent so not sure on others, but it makes sense it would work :) Really glad because I still need a few! Also
被烧毁的雕文
would probably be good to know. Happy hunting everyone xD

Getting Savage after patch 6.0.2 felt practically impossible today because 1)
猎人印记
is gone, so once he disappears you have to find him again and 2) Taming did not aggro the beast (I am lvl 85, not sure if that affects it). That meant I had to tame him before he left my
照明弹
circle.
If my tame spell didn't finish before he left the radius, I had to basically start over. That also mean that having
被烧毁的雕文
was crucial. It took me 2+ hours and the time I finally got it was down to the last split second on my taming spell.
The easiest area for me was right at the stream crossing (36,60) near the end of his route, bc if I missed I knew he would come back soon. Plus, the snakes tended to be easier to run around than the tigers and jade pandas.
My ice traps also didn't work, but that may have just been because I didn't keep trying it, and I had read before hand that he didn't trigger it. That would have made it much easier.

I actually kind of never knew there were such guides and comments on NPC's about rare pets. I just assumed that hunters came across them like anything else, or they got help to tame the stone quilens in MSV.

I got Savage today at 00:15 and i am very happy cause this is my first rare spirit beast for hunter :) It took me over 1 hour cause everytime i tried to tame him he dissapeared and i had to find him again :/ Dots on maps above were rly heplful so i could predict where will he move next. Good luck to all hunter with their hunting :)

Just a fellow warning to fellow hunters out there that want these pets:
You CANNOT find these beasts on your minimap using Track beast and Track Stealth.

As of Patch 6.0.x, all exotic pets, at least all 6 in my bags, offer a bonus ability to the party/raid, eg 5% Multistrike, 5% Haste, etc Hexapos offers 10% increased spell damage and 5% crit plus the water walking which is cool.
As a point to the guide above, the "tracks" are not like foliage on the ground, but are objects and have a tooltip when you hover the mouse over. They can be seen from a long distance once you know where to look.
The way I did it is I looked at maps given above very carefully and chose two points close to each other where the pet would definitely pass through. I then patrolled between those two points until I saw the foot prints.
I have TomTom installed and made a macro "/wayb" which means set a waypoint at the current location. As soon as I saw the first footprint I marked the location on the map using the macro above.
It is better to do this on a mount so if you get aggro from random mobs you can simply hit the spacebar and drop aggro.
So once I found one print, I looked in the direction of the print for the next one. I then marked the next one and immediately looked for the next.
As you are doing this on your mount, eventually you will catch up with the pet, in other words there will be no next print. In the meantime on your map you have a trail of the footprints so you can more or less guess where the next one is going to be, so you put down a flare and wait. Eventually the pet passes through so you chuck a trap at it and then tame it.
If you lose the next footprint, quickly fly back to the previous one (the location is marked on your map since you have been marking the previous footprints) and look carefully in the direction of the print.
While I was chasing Hexapos, I reached the end of his patrol route, and there was no next print. So I doubled back towards the previous print, and there was another print right next to the previous one but this time facing in the opposite direction. I followed a few prints like that and eventually caught up with him.
Without Tomtom and the macro "/wayb" this process would have been much more difficult.

Just tamed Savage post-6.0.2 after tracking the SOB for the better part of 3 hours. I used a combination of the below posts, such as the Waypoint feature of TomTom, staying mounted, and the like. Below is what worked for me, and I presume it will work for all the Rare Tames as well.
Also, I very highly recommend once you hit him with the flare and trap him, DO NOT begin the tame. The trap lasts for 1:30, so be patient and re-flare him. There's a ~1.5 second window where you can cast a new flare before the old one fades.
So basically, you want to Flare > Trap > wait 19 seconds > Flare AGAIN > Tame.
Now the only question is: what do I name him?

Best guide ever....Somehow I never new about these hidden pets until last night. In my defense I did quit playing for most of the past 2 years. However, last night I printed these maps and in about 3 hours last night and another 2 today I have been able to find and tame all 10 of these beasts.
I did get lucky too though, Portent was right at the start of his route near Mo'Shugan palace so I literally caught him in about 2 minutes. Turned ground clutter to low and went hunting...this was great I hope blizz adds more hunter only pet content in the future!

Using
flare
near the Heavily-Chewed Silkweed is definitely the best way to locate him
Since Freezing trap is no use with there.
I used
Wyvern Sting
to keep him still then again a
flare
(!) so he won't go hide while I'm taming him. Because when the flare's gone, even if you're taming him and he's sleeping in front of you, he will disappear (and then wake up and go away).

Awesome guide thanks! I went in easy and just got Stompy! Was a little frustrating at first so I'm glad I went for him first! Only minor issue I have is I wish these special pets were a pet more...special I guess? I mean hunters will know but only if they've been hunting them. I feel like to the average WoW player they may not even notice they're special just upon seeing them. I know they have unique color schemes but just wish it was a bit more unique, like maybe golden horns on Stompy that put off a glow or something. Maybe extra special abilities (as far as I know they have none...),
For instance Savage, he looks pretty close to a ton of other tigers out there, barely anything special about him at all...even shares a model and color scheme with elites on Timeless Isle. I feel like I have to name all these guys their given name or else they may go unnoticed.

For those deciding to hunt down Patrannache and are having a hard time finding the paw prints id like to suggest going into WOW's Interface/Accesibility options and deal with the games Color Blind system. Doing this will change the color of all the stuff in the game which MAY (I stress MAY) allow you to see the paw prints.

Great! I think he moves rather fast, I trapped him at 36.91 45.18 using flare and freezing trap after watching the tracks approaching the area from either direction after he turned around.

It seems like in Legion only Survival hunters do have Freezing Trap. For Marksmanship and Beast Mastery you have to use the Wyvern Sting talent now i think. I managed to tame Portent using it.

I just wanted to say if you use Sonar, these trackable pets are WAAAAY easier to find.
h**p://imgur.com/uJSjfHH
Screenshots don't capture Sonar, as it's an overlay.

A pic from my mobile, you can see the wireframe and 2D radar clearly from Sonar.
Replace the * with t's to see pics.

I can't say he is tough to track - it is almost easy after Pattrannache :D.
Respawn time is definitely something between 5-8 hours - not less, for sure.
Unfortunately, the respawn is not in color order,
so if you want to have the red one for example and you killed/tamed him now, you can't know which will be spawned. I have tracked him maybe 8 times now,
never found the green one
, one time found purple and most often the blue one is spawned. Edited: The map above is precise, however the area changed. I tried many times to predict where he would go when I find tracks and when
I flared on dead area in Big Blossom Excavation- he was walking
VERY
fast in this path, which means that he will reach in the end point faster.
The tracks he is leaving still show the direction of where he is going
. Always check the light areas, it is unnecessarily hard to try to track him in the dead area and of course, have fun!
