Warlocks are not the most popular class in the game - according to
Wowrealms
, only 9% of players choose to be a Warlock at all. Finding information from real destro lock players can be very hard to come by, and not all of it is spot-on. I don't do the SimCraft stuff and I don't Theory Craft (I don't even know what that means!)...everything in this guide will be written from my experience of playing a destro lock for almost 3 years now.
First thing's first: This my first guide. Please don't downrate it - instead, leave feedback in the comments or send me a PM and I'll go back and make adjustments. If you like it, however, please feel free to give me 4 or 5 stars, whatever you think is deserved.
Add-Ons
AddOn Name
Why I Use It
AffDots
This addon puts a moveable bar on my screen that tracks my DoTS so I know when to hit them again. This helps to keep my DPS more consistent.
AskMrRobot
I use this addon because it makes reforging and gemming so easy! Instead of having to logout of Wow, go to AskMrRobot.com, reload your character from the armory, write down all of the gems and reforges you need, and then log back into Wow, the addon just does it for you. In fact, it'll even gem and reforge everything for you with the click of a button.
Deadly Boss Mods (plus all extras)
If you're serious about playing WoW, you need DBM. DBM lets you know when things are about to happen, when you're standing in purple s***, and when tons of other things are going on during raids and dungeons. Don't think about it, just get it.
Recount
Recount helps me to track my DPS and Damage throughout a fight. I actually keep the main Totals window open as well as a secondary, Real-Time Graph for my character open. What this does is it allows me to make sure that my DPS stays consistent throughout the fight. If I see too many spikes or troughs, then I know I could be doing something better.
SexyMap
This one's easy: I play WoW on a 28" TV, and I like to have the minimap down at the bottom of the screen. SexyMap allows me to move the minimap anywhere I want it to be, and I can also change the shape and size so it's more comfortable for me.
WeakAuras 2
WA2 puts a timer on all spells with a cooldown so that I know how long I have to wait before using them again.
I use many other addons, but they're specific to my playstyle and have nothing to do with being a warlock. I'm an achievement hunter, currently with over achievement points. I'm also an auction house junkie. Addons for those types of things don't belong in this guide, though. I may write another guide later covering that stuff if this one goes over well. =)

Macros
Do I Have to Have Them?
The short answer is no! In fact, I recently switched to not even using them during raids. I do, however, use them when I'm out doing achievements or questing in zones where I never used to play. It's a lot easier to one shot an add 30-40 levels below you with a MouseOver macro than it is to tab or click it and then hit the button. It also can speed up gathering mats for tailoring and skinning.
MouseOver: Conflagrate
#showtooltip Conflagrate
/cast Conflagrate
MouseOver: Incinerate
#showtooltip Incinerate
/cast Incinerate
MouseOver: Havoc
#showtooltip Havoc
/cast Havoc
MouseOver: Fel Flame
#showtooltip fel flame
/cast fel flame
How They Work
These are very basic macros, so they almost tell you what they do on their own. For those of you reading this without a programming background, however, let me briefly explain them:
#showtooltip just tells WoW to show the regular tooltip for the spell so you can still read it.
/cast tells WoW you're going to cast a spell.
@mouseover,exists,nodead tells it to look at what's immediately under the mouse and make sure there's something there and it's not dead.

Glyph of Siphon Life
Glyph of Soulstone
Glyph of Conflagrate
Glyph of Nightmares
Glyph of Verdant Spheres
Glyph of Soulwell
Why I Made My Choices
On 60 & 90, I went against the grain and picked different talents. I chose UW as an added "get out of jail free card" for my character. When I was first leveling her up, and again in 5.0, I had a propensity to die a lot because of various DoTS and trap spells. Even though Trix is a human and has
EMFH
, it still comes in handy on some fights (and on the Timeless Isle) if I can have two spells to get me unjammed. As far as KJC goes, a lock that can run AND set things on fire at the same time is a dangerous lock. I hate that it got nerfed in 5.4, but I can still throw 150K+ DPS while moving in fights where the bosses don't stay in one place.
Stats
Stat Priority
Int > Hit > Mastery >= Haste > Crit
What Does This Mean?
This is pretty straightforward. Intellect is always a spellcaster's #1 stat. It doesn't matter if you're a lock or a priest or a druid; you need intellect. All of the gear that you pick up had better have Int as the main stat. Intellect adds firepower, so the higher your Int rating, the more firepower you're going to have. Next you need to get your Hit rating up to 15%. At 15% you are maxed, so anything you do after that is just wasting the stats. Below 15% and you start missing occasional shots, which can greatly decrease your DPS and Damage. Mastery and Haste both vary by your playstyle. Mastery will increase the firepower of your most common spells, while Haste gives you the ability to use them more often. Finally you have Critical Strike, which increase your chances to hit for extra damage.
Reforging Notes
Unless you have a lot of spare time or an advanced degree in mathematics, I tend to stick by what AskMrRobot says to do. I've been told by a few players that it's not always 100% accurate, but it always seems to do the trick for me.
Setting up the UI
I have constantly tweaked my UI since I first started playing back in Cata 4.2. I've tried different UIs, like TukUI and ElvUI, but I just can't get the hang of them. I see what other players do with them, and I'm very jealous, but I've yet to really tackle one. Every piece of advice in this section will be based on the Blizzard standard UI and the few addons I listed at the top of the page. No advanced programming will be needed for this.
Step 1: Menu Settings
Hit the <esc> button and go into the Interface menu. From there, I turn on the "Autoloot" feature. This keeps me from having to hold down the <shift> button every time I go to loot something - I can simply right click the closest add and get the loot from all the dead stuff around me that I'm entitled to get. Now click down the menu until you get to the ActionBars menu and turn on the "bottom right" and "bottom left" menu bars. This should give you something like the next picture here:
Notice how the top-left button bar has numbers on each spell? You're going to want to go into the keybind menu and bind each button to a shift+#. For example, I keep
Dark Intent
bound to Shift+1 for easy access. Here's my entire interface all at once:
Step 2: Screen Setup
Make sure that Recount is turned on and hit something. Now your name appears in the Recount damage box. Right click it and open a Real-Time graph. Drag that down to the bottom left of the screen and size it to fit in that little space. When I'm not raiding, I keep a guild chat window on top of the regular chat window; when I'm raiding, I replace it with the raid window instead. Move the Affdots window down to the bottom middle. Go through the SexyMap settings (<esc>, AddOns, SexyMap) and make sure you can move the map around, then drag it down to the bottom, just over the bottom-right spellbar. Next, click on another NPC. Right click your portrait, unlock it, and move it down to the bottom, and then do the same thing with the other portrait. This will keep you from having to drag your eyes all over the screen...
all of the important information is now located along the bottom of the screen
. The top is completely clear, meaning that you can see adds and the boss with no worries at all.
Step 3: Spell Bars
Let's start by taking another look at my spellbar:
Here's what's on it:
#
Shift+#
1 =
Curse of the Elements
1 =
Dark Intent
2 =
Shadowburn
2 =
Dark Soul: Instability
3 =
Immolate
3 =
Ember Tap
4 =
Conflagrate
4 =
Healthstone
5 =
Rain of Fire
(for AoE-heavy fights)
5 =
Unbound Will
6 =
Chaos Bolt
6 =
Every Man For Himself
(human racial - you might not have it)
7 =
Incinerate
7 =
Twilight Ward
8 =
Fire and Brimstone
8 =
Summon Doomguard
9 =
Soulstone
9 =
Sacrificial Pact
0 = Mount
(whatever mount you like...my last three buttons are various mounts)
0 =
Enslave Demon
- =
Havoc
Step 4: The Rotation
Once you have everything setup, the rotation is pretty simple. Give the tank(s) 3 seconds to grab aggro before you start firing. (If you grab aggro before the tank does, you're going to be one dead warlock.) Once the tank has aggro, cast your
Curse of the Elements
on the boss. Stand still long enough to get off an
Immolate
and then immediately blast out 2x
Conflagrate
. At this point you have 2 different DoTS on the add to monitor, but you should be in an AoE healing pool and you can spam the dickens out of
Incinerate
. Keep an eye on Affdots. If Immolate gets under 4 seconds, cast it. If you get a charge up on Conflagrate, burn it. Those two are normally very close to proccing at the same time, so you should be able to fire off one and then the other. Once you have 4x
Burning Embers
, cast
Dark Soul: Instability
, summon your
Summon Doomguard
, and fire off all four of your
Chaos Bolts
.
Rinse and repeat. Make sure and keep an eye on your health and mana. Your mana starts to run out when you are close to 4
Burning Embers
. The healers, knowing that locks are good at self heals, probably won't be paying much attention to you unless you're demolishing the Damage and DPS charts, so you may need to pop a heal or two. You'll miss a tick on the damage, but it's better than dying and missing the entire fight.
Step 4A: AoE Differences
Depending on what you read, you'll need to change your glyphs and talents and socks before you get into an AoE fight. The way that I've taught you to setup things in this guide, nothing needs to be changed. The spells you need are already in place, as well as the talents and glyphs.
For an AoE-heavy fight, you simply need to cast
Rain of Fire
a time or two (depending on the size of the mobs), then turn on
Fire and Brimstone
. After that, simply target an add in the middle of the group and see how high your DPS goes. I've literally hit over 2,000,000 DPS in a few different fights.

did an amazing job writing the guide.
Noxxic
- For no particular reason, I tend to like it the best when I need to find things out about being a destro lock.
Icy Veins
- Their view on destro locks is a little different from Noxxic's, and some of you might like it better.
Wowhead - Can't forget Wowhead. I'd completely and totally suck at this game if it weren't for this site.
Contact Me
I play WoW 6-7 days per week, usually 2-4 hours per day. If you would like to get in touch with me, you're welcome to add my Battle Tag (trixabell#1463) and message me in-game.

Good guide covering all the basics of playing a warlock, keep up the good work :)
A few things could be added, mostly for raiding purposes:
Where is your Soulshatter? (Didn't see it on your actionbars, and it can potentially be a lifesaver if you get a bit carried away on the dps front)
And in accordance to the above, having soul shatter handy would allow you to begin your opener immediatly instead of waiting on tanks to properly grab aggro.

Great guide!
I've been rearranging my ui to match your style, just to experiment with whether it will suit me well. I'm stuck with how to unlock my character's portrait as well as my target's portrait. I've right clicked them both to look for a menu option, I've tried various key and mouse combinations. I've got the addons you mentioned also. I'm probably missing some simple control function. Can you explain exactly how you unlock the portraits, please?

Not to be too picky, but your macro don't need the (exists) in them. @mouseover presupposes it exists; if it didn't exist there would be no mouseover. They are all short enough that this isn't really an issue, but if you ever start making longer ones this knowledge might be beneficial. Very good guide.
edit..I did a little experimenting and found that (exists) should be used. Technically it shouldn't be needed, but with some testing the macros was a little sporadic. Without the (exists) the spell would sometimes not cast (got the no target message). With (exists) it cast every time.
Also, another good mod for moving things around is "MoveAnything". Can be found from Curse. It is highly configurable and can move just about anything anywhere. Can also resize anything you can move.

Your rotation suits for LFR and Flexible runs, but you will lack lot's of dps..
If you really want to minmax your dps, here is something you should look into.
Pull timer starts; 3second remaining on Pull timer =
int potion
(using it before combat it allows you to use another during the fight) and start casting
Incinerate
(it will land on boss at 0);
Immolate
;
Conflagrate
;
Conflagrate
;
Incinerate
till you reach 2 Ember's and your 4/5 tier set bonus proc's;
Chaos bolt
;
Chaos bolt
.
Rest of the fight
Keep Immolate up on the boss all the time (and on other targets if possible to build more embers).
Use Conflagrates always when you can (in hope of 2/5 tier set bonus proc).
Incinerate to fill embers.
Save Chaos bolts for procs (trinkets & 4/5 tier set bonus).
Giving 3 seconds to tank to build threat? cmon.. if there is 5 to 16 other dps's in the raid, u dont need to worry about the threat you will build..
