1. Introduction
Mage, this is a cloth type class, It is a Ranged DPS, It has alot of utility, such as
召唤餐桌
. Aswell as the fact they have decent utility, they also deal massive amounts of damage, The highest for BiS RDPS classes. I'm a somewhat experienced mage that has 14/14 normal xp and 3/14 heroic. Remember, that this is a
Raiders guide
not the basics, this is in full depth DPS.
Source:
http://www.noxxic.com/wow/dps-rankings/realistic#BiS
Without further adieu than that lets get right to it!
=======================================================================================================================================================
2. Race choice
There are 14 race choices, these are the following races (listed alphabetically in their faction) and racials:
Horde
Blood Elf - Arcane torret, which is an additional interrupt
Goblin - Rocket Jump, which is utility for movement and Launch rocket which deals damage. passive haste.
Orc - Spell power buff and resistant to some stuns
Troll - Haste buff, very good for frost mage. stuns don't last as long
Undead - can drain health, can break from sleep, charm and fear effects.
Alliance
Draenei - Increased hit and self heal defensive Cool down
Dwarf - damage reduction Cool down
Gnome - increased mana pool, this could be potentially useful for arcane as it will be a little bit harder to run out of mana.
Human - spirit increase (not so useful) and can escape from anything that causes you to lose control of your character.
Night Elf - Has shadowmeld which is only good for aggro resetting.
Worgen - Critical strike passively increased, very good for fire mages. A temporary 60% movement buff.
Neutral
Pandaren - Sleep cc, more effectiveness from food buff. Takes reduced fall damage. "more bouncy and takes less damage" I can't believe it says that, lol.
Note that I only put down the racials that are useful or are potentially useful in a raid not things like professions increases or resistances.
Summary:
It looks like horde gets it better than alliance do.
For horde:
Goblin, troll or orc.
For alliance Gnome, everything else isn't really so good. Other than worgen which is good for Fire mages.
But you can pick any race you want but the above is a guide if you want to pick a class based on racial not on how they look.
=======================================================================================================================================================
3. Reforging
Reforging with a mage can be various based on spec/ play style, These are my personal builds for each spec. But one stat for sure that is if you are not at or above 15% Hit, then reforge your gear until you are at the Hit cap. On any gear without Hit, reforge the weakest stat (see stat priority) into Hit Rating or Expertise. Do this until you are at or slightly above 15%. Note that having more than 15% hit is a waste of secondary stats.
3.1 Stat priority
Arcane mage.
Spell Hit (15%) > Mastery >= Haste > Crit.
Mastery is the strong point for Arcane as it gives additional damage based on unspent mana, for example, if you have 80% mastery, you will deal 80% more damage if you are at 100% mana. (the lower the mana the lower the percentage increase)
Haste depends on what is going on, and sometimes having haste can improve damage, this is based on the fight.
Crit is handy and getting crit with arcane missiles can end up with a MASSIVE damage increase.
Frost mage.
Spell Hit (15%) > Haste > Mastery > Crit (23%)
Haste - For frost mage, haste is very important to get off the needed amount of frostbolts to start getting procs for fingers of frost
寒冰指
Also haste is very good with DoTs as they will tick faster.
Mastery - Mastery Icicles adds an additional Icicle attack that is created by Frostfire Bolt and Frostbolt. This means that the percentage of mastery you have, EG mine is at 53%, it will store 53% of the damage dealt with Frostbolt or frostfire bolt. The Icicles are launched when you cast Ice Lance or when you hit 5 Icicles. Also, the mastery increases the damage done by your Water Elemental.
Crit - Increases the chance to hit for additional damage. Thanks to Shatter, Frost mages can reach high effective Crit rates with minimal Crit from their gear. It is possible for Frost Mages to effectively hit 100% Crit when hitting frozen targets can be caused by using a deep freeze. At 28% Crit, you will effectively have a 100% Crit rate against bosses. You would need 28% crit, but 23% because of the 5% crit and 10% spell power buff from Arcane Brilliance
奥术智慧
, Will give you the extra 5% to 28% crit.
Fire mage.
Spell Hit (15%) > Crit > Haste > Mastery
Crit - Increases the chance to hit for additional damage. Crit is highly effective because it increases the number of instant-cast Pyroblasts you receive from Heating Up
热力迸发
to Pyroblast!. Because of the fact that if you crit, you have to
crit again
to get your Pyroblast!
炽热连击!
proc, giving 25% additional damage to your pyroblast and making it an instant cast.
Haste - Decreases cast time and makes DoTs tick faster, faster spells so more fireball, and scorch so more procs for pyroblast!
Mastery - Ignite
精通:点燃
, Puts a DoT on the target that you casted Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Inferno Blast, Scorch, and Pyroblast on, will deal a percentage (the amount of mastery you have) over 4 seconds. also, if you reapply this effect, the remaining damage of the DoT will be added to the new one. EG you have 50% mastery, You're fireball hits for 63k Damage, Ignite will burn the target for 31.5k damage over 4 seconds.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.2 Useful tools for reforging
Sometimes, it can be very hard to choose on which reforge to make, as sometimes this might be a little confusing. But don't worry! if you are majorly confused on what to do I suggest using the website, askmrrobot. This will give your character 100% optimal based on your spec.
=======================================================================================================================================================
4. Gems and enchants
This can get a little tricky, as for going with the stat priority in Chapter 2.1, Heres some gems to use to narrow it down. Also use the living steel belt buckle to get a Prismatic socket. Also enchants is very simple as there are no alternate choices for each slot, unless you have a profession, if so use the bonus from the profession.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.1 Gems for Arcane.
Meta
- Use the sinister primal diamond, but if you haven't done the legendary questline (which you should) use Burning primal diamond.
Prismatic
- 2 gems here, Fractured Sun's Radiance and Smooth Sun's Radiance. Generally I would stick with the Fractured sun's as it gives mastery, but if you need a bit more crit, go with the Smooth sun's.
Blue
- 2 gems here, Sensei's Wild Jade and Rigid River's Heart. For here, I would go with Sensei's Wild Jade for the mastery, but if you are lacking on hit, go for Rigid River's Heart.
Red
- Artful Vermilion Onyx. This is all you need here, comes with some mastery and intellect. (+80 intellect +160 mastery)
Yellow
- Fractured Sun's Radiance. Lots of mastery, not much else to say about it. (+320 mastery)
4.2 Gems for Frost.
Meta
- Use the sinister primal diamond, but if you haven't done the legendary questline (which you should) use Burning primal diamond.
Prismatic
- Brilliant Primordial Ruby. Intellect boost. (+160 intellect)
Blue
- 2 gems here, Veiled Imperial Amethyst and Rigid River's Heart. Veiled Imperial Amethyst is the one to go with but if you are lacking hit go with Rigid River's Heart.
Red
Brilliant Primordial Ruby. Same socket as what you would use for prismatic. (+160 Intellect)
Yellow
Wicked Vermilion Onyx. Haste and Expertise, (+160 Expertise +160 Haste)
4.3 Gems for Fire.
Meta
- Use the sinister primal diamond, but if you haven't done the legendary questline (which you should) use Burning primal diamond.
Prismatic
- Smooth Sun's Radiance. Alot of critical strike. (+320 Critical Strike)
Blue
- 2 Gems here, Piercing Wild Jade and Rigid River's Heart. Piercing Wild Jade is the way to go (+160 Critical strike +160 Hit) but if you're lacking Hit go with Rigid River's Heart (+320 hit)
Red
- Potent Vermilion Onyx. Some intellect and some Critical strike. (+60 Intellect +160 Critical strike)
Yellow
- Smooth Sun's Radiance. Same as Prismatic, alot of critical strike. (+320 Critical strike)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.4 Enchants
Enchants, this part is very simple to understand as there is only one choice on what enchant to use on each slot. Also on another note, All the enchants are the same for each spec other than gloves.
Shoulders Greater Crane Wing Inscription
Cloak Enchant Cloak - Superior Intellect
Chest Enchant Chest - Glorious Stats
Bracers Enchant Bracer - Super Intellect
Belt Living Steel Belt Buckle
Legs Greater Cerulean Spellthread
Boots Enchant Boots - Pandaren's Step
Main Hand Enchant Weapon - Jade Spirit
Off Hand Enchant Off-Hand - Major Intellect
Two Hand Enchant Weapon - Jade Spirit
The glove enchants are:
Frost - Enchant Gloves - Superior Mastery and Enchant Gloves - Superior Expertise. I would stick with the mastery as expertise isn't needed in a raid, I put it there as an option
Arcane - Same as frost, Enchant Gloves - Superior Mastery and Enchant Gloves - Superior Expertise. I would stick with the mastery as expertise isn't needed in a raid, I put it there as an option
Fire - Enchant Gloves - Greater Haste and Enchant Gloves - Superior Expertise. I would stick with the mastery as expertise isn't needed in a raid, I put it there as an option
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.5 Optimize
Optimizing with all of these stats can get tricky and you may find yourself spending some time on how much of what gem to use and what to not use. If you would like an instant optimal, just like for reforging go to askmrrobot great website for optimizing.
=======================================================================================================================================================
5. Talents
Talents! with the change in MoP talents have become an easier choice, but this section will describe which talent based on the tier selection. During raids you will need to take a bunch of Tome of the Clear Mind, you'll find out why in the next chapter. These are the talents:
Tier 1 (level 15) |Presence of Mind|Blazing Speed|Ice Floes|
Tier 2 (level 30) |Temporal Shield| Flameglow|Ice Barrier|
Tier 3 (level 45) |Ring of Frost|Ice Ward|Frostjaw|
Tier 4 (level 60) |Greater invisibility|Cauterize| Cold Snap|
Tier 5 (level 75) |Nether Tempest|Living Bomb|Frost Bomb|
Tier 6 (level 90) |Invocation|Rune of Power|Incanter's Ward|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.1 Talent variation
Arcane
Tier 1 - Its between presence of Mind and Ice Floes, if theres a fight where you move around alot, go with Ice Floes as it lets you move and cast. (stacks 3 times, charge based) Other than that, go with Presence of Mind for instant casts.
Tier 2 - Temporal Shield, very good cooldown as it heals back the Damage taken. I will go more in depth with this in chapter 9.5
Tier 3 - Ring of Frost, for fights with croud controls, kiting these mobs into this can make a temporary trash cleanup if they're starting to overwhelm the raid.
Tier 4 - Its between Greater Invisibility and Cauterize. I will explain the usefulness of Cauterize in chapter 9.5 but I would personally pick Greater invisibility as the damage reduction is huge, 90% I will also explain this in chapter 9.4
Tier 5 - This is where I said keep some tome of the clear mind with you, every talent is useful in some way for this tier. Go with the following talents based on these fights:
Living Bomb - If there are a mob or 3, and they're spread.
Nether Tempest - If there are a bunch of mobs with a reasonable distance away.
Frost Bomb - If there are a bunch of mobs and they're Stacked together.
Tier 6 - Rune of Power, this talent is 100% crucial and is a requirement because of the mastery making it that you deal damage based on your unspent mana.
Frost
Tier 1 - Its between Blazing speed and Presence of Mind, If theres a fight where you move to certain areas before you get hit by something, go with Blazing speed, This will be explained in chapter 9.5 further. Use presence of mind if you want to start off with a Frostfire bolt.
Tier 2 - Temporal Shield, very good cooldown as it heals back the Damage taken. I will go more in depth with this in chapter 9.5.
Tier 6 - Invocation, its like Rune of power but you can move around with it and this one reduces mana regeneration, thats the reason why its useless for arcane. (also there is no cooldown on this so if you run out of mana, also use it)
Fire
Fire is very similar to Frost.
Tier 1 - Presence of Mind, Instant pyroblast at the start of combat.
I will explain the usefulness of Cauterize in chapter 9.4 but I would personally pick Greater invisibility as the damage reduction is huge, 90% I will also explain this in chapter 9.5

=======================================================================================================================================================
6. Glyphs
Glyphs, glyphs are simple and there are many combos with it, I will list glyphs and I will put next to it how important it is, Either optional, required or recommended. I will also describe each.
6.1 Arcane Glyphs
Major
Glyph of Mana Gem Required. More Mana gems for more Mana.
Glyph of Arcane Power Recommended. Good for the shorter fights, also good all round.
Glyph of Evocation Optional. Small boost for survival, but the heals won't be very good, Your healer should be able to heal you.
Glyph of Arcane Explosion Optional. Improved AoE utility.
Glyph of Counterspell Optional. Good because you can interrupt without pausing your rotation.
Minor
Glyph of Mirror Image Required. more DPS with mirrors using arcane attacks instead.
Glyph of Loose Mana Optional. Slight DPS boost by slowing Mana loss, sometimes worth it as it gives mana over time.
Glyph of Momentum Optional. Better movement for when you are strafing.
6.2 Frost Glyphs
Major
Glyph of Splitting Ice Required. Splits half the damage of what icelance hit for to annother mob, big DPS increase, especially on fights like Kor'Kron Dark Shamans
Glyph of Icy Veins Recommmended. Gives slightly more damage and helps prevent GCD locking from high Haste.
Glyph of Water Elemental Recommended. The water elemental can now move with you so you can freeze properly without the hassel of it being "out of range"
Glyph of Arcane Explosion Optional. Improved AoE utility.
Glyph of Counterspell Optional. Good because you can interrupt without pausing your rotation.
Glyph of Evocation Optional. Healing for slight damage taken to take a little stress off healer. (but not much really)
Minor
Glyph of Momentum Optional. Better movement for when you are strafing.
6.3 Fire
Major
Glyph of Combustion Required. Good damage boost.
Glyph of Evocation Optional. Healing for slight damage taken to take a little stress off healer. (but not much really)
Glyph of Inferno Blast Recommended. Boost to AoE DPS.
Glyph of Arcane Explosion Optional. Improved AoE utility.
Glyph of Counterspell Optional. Good because you can interrupt without pausing your rotation.
Minor
Glyph of Mirror Image Required. more DPS with mirrors using fire attacks instead.
Glyph of Momentum Optional. Better movement for when you are strafing.
=======================================================================================================================================================
7. Professions
For this chapter I will list the professions and put down the perk that is effective with a mage.
Alchemy - Mixology.
Blacksmithing - Socket Bracer Socket Gloves.
Enchanting - Enchant Ring - Greater Intellect.
Engineering - Synapse Springs.
Inscription - Secret Crane Wing Inscription
Jewelcrafting - epic gem (I will cover more of this later)
Leatherworking - Fur Lining - Intellect
Tailoring - Lightweave Embroidery
Summary:
Alchemy makes flasks last for 2 hours instead of 1 and you get more intellect from it, Blacksmithing you get Sockets, which are prismatic so see chapter 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3 for what gem goes into it. Enchanting gives you a ring enchant which is a good DPS improvement giving 160 intellect (on both rings it gives you 320 intellect). Engineering provides the single strongest DPS gain of any profession with its tinkers, giving 1920 intellect and its not proc based its a use effect and has a cooldown of 1 minute. Inscription, not so usefull as you can get a better inscription without the profession. Jewelcrafting giving a good gem, based on spec giving alot of that stat. Leatherworking, huge int buff and tailoring, also not as useful as it only gives a cheaper leg enchant.
For the jewelcrafting, if you are Arcane use Fractured Serpent's Eye, for frost use Brilliant Serpent's Eye and for fire use Smooth Serpent's Eye. Also on an another note, leatherworking gives Crit which is really good for fire spec.
=======================================================================================================================================================
8. Addons
These addons have use regardless of which spec you are using. These addons are useful for DPS and practicing. In chapter 8.1 I will go over the Spec-Specific addons.
Manapercent bar.
This addon is alright if you want to keep track of your mana incase you go low, but this is especially good for arcane as they need to keep their mana 85% or above.
Magenuggets
This addon, it keeps track of your stats and also tracks your DoTs, it also includes multi-dotting and some procs. a little bit on the fun side, if you cast mirror image it will play the classic A-team theme and Time warp plays the time warp song.
Recount/skada
Great addons, awesome for testing yourself and practicing your DPS. It also allows you to check for anything you did wrong, like cast something at the wrong time by showing up less damage because of proc not used right.
Weakauras
Weakauras is a great addon for setting up timings, procs, cds, buffs and many other helpful, or interesting ways.
Extra CD
Extra CD keeps track of procs, proc chance and cd of trinkets, and anything else that is proc-based
8.1 Spec-Specific Addons
DBM (Deadly Boss Mods)
DBM is great for timing and to know what to do when, and when a massive cooldown will become required. Pull timers are here so you know when to use your potion before the fight.
Here are a few addons that will only help the single spec and not help any other.
Arcane
Arcanometer
Arcanometer shows you all of your arcane charges, your mana crystal, your bomb tick, how much time left on your rune of power. It also tracks your DoT and arcane missile procs.
Manapercent bar
This spec manapercent bar will be useful as you will need to make sure you are 85% or above in mana.
Frost
There are no addons for frost only that I'm aware of, if there is let me know in the comments below.
Fire
Combustion helper
Combustion helper, Its very handy and gives you exact statistics of your bomb and lets you know when to set off your combustion.
=======================================================================================================================================================
9. DPS and rotation
Now that you are buffed up, optimized, and picked up all of your talents, now for the rotation, some of the time it can sound complex, but once you've had a try, made you're bindings it will all be easy to do. so remember it way look hard at first but it'll all make sense in the end.
9.1 Macros
These are just a few simple macros, that have good use.
Multi-dot, Mouse over bombing
#showtooltip Mage Bomb
/cast This is my first guide, so I'm sorry about none of these fancy effects and stuff not put in

Go and check out my Warlock guide so that you can see how to format this one. I included links at the bottom of mine so that you can get the BB Codes necessary to format this. It's very hard to read this as it is and adding the correct codes would create a clickable TOC instead of the block of text at the top. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or trouble figuring things out and I can share the version of mine I've saved to my desktop so you can see how the codes work.
