Enchantments
Your friendly neighborhood Enchanter will be happy to make you some secondary stat boosting enchantments for your rings, neck, back, and weapon(s), assuming you provide/help with mats.
There are two "tiers" of enchants available:
Breath

Gift
.
Breath enchants cost 1x
Luminous Shard
, or 20x
Draenic Dust
. They are extremely easy and cheap to craft, and should be used for pieces you expect to replace.
Gift enchants cost 4x
Temporal Crystal
and 3x of a Sorcerous Element that changes with the enchant recipe. These enchants should be used on pieces you expect to keep for a while or are significantly stronger than your other pieces (such as your 680 ring!)

Weapon Enchants:
Weapon enchants are a little trickier. These are created by either Enchanters (for melee weapons) or Engineers (for ranged weapons), and require far more materials to make.
All weapon enchants cost different materials to make, the most common being
Temporal Crystal
s and Sorcerous Elements for melee weapons, and
Gearspring Parts
for ranged weapons.
NOTE 1: Staffs, even for ranged classes such as mages, are constituted as melee weapons, and should be enchanted with a melee weapon enchant.
NOTE 2: If you dual wield, two of the same enchants do not stack. You need different enchants for each weapon (ex. two
Mark of Bleeding Hollow
s do not stack, but a
Mark of Bleeding Hollow
and a
Mark of Warsong
do stack.)
Melee Weapon Enchants:
Mark of the Shattered Hand
. Basic, budget weapon enchant, usable for any stat. Materials used: 1x
Temporal Crystal
.
Mark of Warsong
. Haste weapon enchant. Materials used: 15x

Temporal Crystal
and 10x
Sorcerous Water
.
Mark of Shadowmoon
. Spirit weapon enchant, used by healers. Materials used: 3x
Temporal Crystal
and 5x
Sorcerous Fire
.
Mark of Blackrock
. Bonus Armor weapon enchant, used by tanks. Materials used: 3x
Temporal Crystal
and 5x
Sorcerous Earth
.
Mark of Bleeding Hollow
. Mastery weapon enchant. Materials used: 15x
Temporal Crystal
and 10x
Sorcerous Air
.

Temporal Crystal
and 10x
Sorcerous Air
.
Ranged Weapon Enchants:
Oglethorpe's Missile Splitter

Gearspring Parts
.
Megawatt Filament

Gearspring Parts
.
Hemet's Heartseeker
: Mastery weapon enchant. Materials used: 20x
Gearspring Parts
.
Learning Rotations and Stat Priorities
Before perfecting your rotation, realize that there is no perfect rotation. Many players have many different playstyles, and something that may provide higher dps may not work for other players. At the end of the day, if you do something that increases your dps that works for you, it may just be better for you to stick with that. That being said, be open to possibilities and trying what works for other players. The same goes for stat priorities.
Beginner Resources
Icy-Veins
: Icy-Veins is a very good website if you are beginning to learn your class/spec. They have guides on talents, rotations, stat priorities, etc. for each spec approved by top players of said specs. Icy-Veins provides very good general advice for all aspects of a class.

SimulationCraft
: A good website for all skill levels, SimulationCraft is a constantly updated resource that shows dps chart simulations comparing all classes and specs. On their home page, three charts are listed, showing comparative dps at three different item levels (630, 665, and 695) on a Patchwerk style fight. These simulations assume near-perfect rotation and stat priority, so don't get too down if you don't quite hit their numbers. However, it is a good resource to see how you, and your spec as a whole, is performing.
You can also download the SimulationCraft client. This client allows you to do simulation runs on your own characters gear and abilities, allowing you to see how changing talents and stats around will affect your dps. This download is a must for all dps looking to improve substantially.
Here is a link to the client download page.
FAQ: What is a "Patchwerk-style" fight?
Also referred to as a "tank-and-spank", Patchwerk-style fight is a fight with little to no mechanics, other than dps the boss as hard as you can.
Based off the boss of the same name in Naxxramas,
the only Patchwerk style fight in Highmaul is The Butcher. You should expect your dps to fluctuate based on the encounter you are currently on. Patchwerk-style fights are easiest to simulate as they primarily test rotation, not movement ability.
Combat Logging/WarcraftLogs
: Combat Logs are what damage meter addons use to get their numbers. By typing /combatlog in game, you will enable Combat Logging to a .txt file in your WoW directory. This log can be used by a third party resource, such as WarcraftLogs to analyze damage done, spells used, damage taken, etc. of the entire party. While logs are intimidating to analyze at first, they can be the difference between a mediocre and great dps. They are also used by raid leaders to analyze what may be causing a raid to wipe repeatedly.
Here is an example log of a guild in Normal Highmaul.
Reddit/Weekly Q&A Threads:
On the official World of Warcraft subreddit, there is a sticky thread each day of the week for a specific purpose.
Murloc Monday:
A general question thread. You can ask anything about anything in the game on this thread.
Tanking Tuesday:
A question/guide thread aimed at tanks. Experienced tanks will post and take questions on specific tank classes and how to navigate certain mechanics as a tank.
Midweek Mending:
(Wednesday) A question/guide thread aimed at healers. Experienced healers will post and take questions on specific healing classes and how to navigate certain mechanics as a healer.
Thusday Loot Thread:
This is where you go to gloat about your
Ashes of Al'ar
drop.
Weekly Raiding Q&A:
(Friday) Similar to Murloc Monday, a general raiding question thread. Experienced raiders of all classes will post and take questions on their class/spec and how to navigate certain mechanics.
Switch Up Saturday:
Where to voice your unpopular opinions.
Skirmish Sunday:
A general PvP thread. Experienced PvPers of all classes will post and take questions on their class/spec and how to be the best at PvP you can be.
In addition to that, a new subreddit named
CompetitiveWoW
has surfaced, for players to ask questions on higher-end content. Feel free to use it to gain opinions from the more experienced raiders.
Add-Ons:
If you don't already have it, download
Curse Client.
No, seriously. Add-ons are essential for making your life easier as a WoW player. No matter what spec or class you are, there are multiple add-ons that will improve your performance.
IMO, Must Have Add-Ons For Every Class:
Deadly Boss Mods
: A second raid leader, Deadly Boss Mods informs you of mechanics of the fight with sound effects, big red text, and other wonderful things. This is
the
add-on.
Recount
/
Skada
: Also known as the damage meter. Gives you real time updates on the performance of everyone in your group, showing total damage done as well as DPS, damage done per ability, healing done, absorb done, resources consumed, etc. Skada consumes less CPU but Recount is prefered by many.
TellMeWhen
/
WeakAuras
: Fully customizable extra action bars placeable anywhere, as well as being able to alert you to buffs, debuffs, ability cooldowns, and many other things. TellMeWhen is much more basic, while WeakAuras is extremely customizable (albeit tougher).
Optional -- A Custom UI: Some people really like the default WoW UI and perform best with it, and that is totally okay. If you perform better with it, more power to you. However, some raiders prefer more customizable UIs. Personally, I use
Elvui
, a popular custom UI. There are other UIs that work better for others. Browse through Curse's add-on page for more options.
Macroing
By hitting /m in game, you will bring up your macro window. This will allow you to make strings of abilities, as well as making QoL changes to your existing abilities. Icy-Veins's class pages have pre-built macros that are suggested for each spec.
Strings
Let's say I'm Conicmage, a Lv. 100 Frost Mage. I'm looking to increase my DPS but am feeling overwhelmed hitting so many buttons during a boss fight. I just wish I could have one button that popped multiple DPS cooldowns!
Wait. I can?
Here is an example of a custom macro for a frost mage:
#showtooltip Mirror Image
/cast Mirror Image
/cast Icy Veins
If I take Mirror Image as my Tier 7 talent, I'm going to want to use it as a DPS cooldown. However, I can make a simple macro that will combine both of my DPS cooldowns into a push of one button. This macro will look like it is just Mirror Image, showing the tooltip and cooldown when moused over, but will perform both spells when used. Even if Icy Veins is on cooldown, I can click this button to perform Mirror Image, or vice versa. It will just ignore the part with Icy Veins/Mirror Image if it is on cooldown. However, be careful! If you are using two or more dps cooldowns with different cooldown timers, this will not show the cooldown of the second timer. Mirror Image is on a 2 minute cooldown, and Icy Veins is on a 3 minute cooldown. If I use this macro at the beginning of the encounter, and use it immediately again after 2 minutes, Icy Veins will come up after another minute, but it will not show it in the tooltip. If you want to use Icy Veins immediately once it is off of cooldown, make sure to have another resource showing you when it is off of cooldown (tellmewhen/icy veins on another bar).
Macros with items:
#showtooltip Mirror Image
/cast Mirror Image
/cast Icy Veins
/use 13
What the heck is 13? This is a specific macro for if you get an on-use trinket (ex.
Shards of Nothing
) and want to use it along with your other DPS cooldowns. This macro will cast Mirror Image, Icy Veins, and use your first trinket. This also works out well because Mirror Image and
Shards of Nothing
both have a 2 minute cooldown.
Trinket 1 has a value of 13, and Trinket 2 has a value of 14.
Full list of IDs for equipped items.
Macros with potions:
#showtooltip Mirror Image
/cast Mirror Image
/cast Icy Veins
/use 13
/use Draenic Intellect Potion
Putting an inventory item in a macro is simple: just put the name of the item. For this example, we are using a
Draenic Intellect Potion
. While this item has a 1 minute cooldown, it can only be used once per battle. This works well, as it will be used in the macro the first time and ignored all other times.
Here is an example of a defensive cooldown:
#showtooltip Ice Block
/use Healing Tonic
/cast Ice Block
This macro will first heal you with a Healing Tonic, then put you into Ice Block. Handy for situations where you are expecting massive burst damage.
QoL Macros
Quality of Life macros are macros that make abilities a little easier to use. Let's say I'm Conicfrost, a Lv. 100 Frost Death Knight. I'm handy to my raid because I have a battle rez, but by the time I have clicked on my target then clicked on my battle rez, I have already lost 2 seconds of DPS time. How can I make this easier for myself?
Here's an example:
#showtooltip Raise Ally
/cast Raise Ally
This macro is a little confusing. @mouseover,help means that it will target whoever your mouse is currently over, if they are friendly. If there is no such target, it will instead be cast on your target. There are a lot of possibilities in these macros and they can be very different for different players. Icy-Veins has a good list of custom made macros in your class guide.
If you've made it all the way here, thanks for reading my guide! I hope this has been helpful and I will update it as Warlords of Draenor progresses. Feel free to leave comments if I got anything wrong/you'd like to see any other tips I haven't covered. Lastly, I am not affiliated with any organization I have linked above. I just really like their content if I've linked it. :)
