This is inspired, not by something that happened to me, but by a search term on my blog.
Roleplay servers are rather different from your run of the mill PvE server; there are behavioural expectations and a different type of community. One may expect to see people throwing complex emotes at one another, a distinct lack of textspeak and emoticons in /say and /yell text as well as odd accents and gatherings of people
sitting down
or standing around or otherwise
not wearing armour
.
I don't mean
naked
, I mean in, say, Tuxedo pants and a White Swashbuckler's Shirt.
Roleplayers
are people that play the part of their character; they get into his or her skin the same way an actor gets into his or her role in a film, play or television show. They may not get into it quite as severely as Hugh Jackman gets into the role of Wolverine (
hello
, the guy would take a foot off his height if he could), but there's a certain level of attachment there. It's acting and creative writing.
Think of a Roleplaying Server as a movie set. On this movie set are your actors (PCs), extras (NPCs) and props (towns, buildings, wildlife, armour, weapons, clothing). If you're a guest on a movie set you're expected to behave and not disturb the actors, even if one of them is your favourite actor in the history of
ever
- don't haul on the ropes, don't climb up the mast and please don't drink Mr. Willis' coffee, okay?
Roleplaying Servers have
their very own guidelines
that have been set out by Blizzard and include very basic things like naming conventions, but there are other things to keep in mind as well.
Reserve /s and /y for in-character conversation.
The /say and /yell channels are not for flinging insults at "noobs" or talking about your car troubles - it's for Grin'dal Darkspear to peddle his wares or Kinuka Swiftshot to insult a passing Orc. If you aren't a roleplayer, at least have the courtesy to use (( something like this )) - especially if you find yourself in the middle of a roleplaying event. If you're chatting with friends, form up a party or make your own channel, but keep the out of character, real-life and non-storyline chatter out of the open channels.
The vast majority of players will treat party chat as OOC
, despite Blizzard's guidelines.
English: speak it.
For the love of Horus, use the bloody proper form of the English language - "u" and "r" are letters, not words, and a little effort goes a long way in making people take you at least somewhat seriously (and lowers the chances of one being mistaken for a griefer - more on that later). Exceptions, of course, exist and take the forms of Troll accents and other in-character forms of non-formal speech.
Don't grief the Roleplayers - we bite, hard.
Be courteous toward the Roleplaying segment of the population. You don't make fun of PvPers for PvPing on a PvP server, don't make fun of Roleplayers for Roleplaying on a Roleplay server -
it's simple.
What does this mean? If you stumble across a scene, feel free to join in - but don't hop around saying, "lol rp is 4 noobs" or variations thereof. Treat us well and we will do the same for you.
Remember: RPers are people, just like YOU.
Some are nicer people than others, but for the most part, if you're confused about something, we're willing to lend a hand - assuming you ask politely and in complete sentences.
TL;DR:
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. If you are going to join a Roleplay server, be open to or accepting of Roleplayers, use proper English (or as close as you can get!) and treat your fellows with courtesy and respect.

As a role-player I agree with a lot of what is here, but I disliked the article over all because, while it started out great in the beginning, the tone just seemed like it was being written by a player who had -just- been griefed by a non-RP'er, and a bit angry/bossy in the end.
One thing the kind of concerned me was when the author wrote:
The vast majority of players will treat party chat as OOC, despite Blizzard's guidelines.
Being very familiar with Blizz's RP policies, I have yet to read anywhere that Party chat is supposed to be in character. The author may wish to consider revising that line, just a suggestion. :)
Over all though, if it had a more positive/suggestive type tone, rather than what it has now, I think this guide would definitely be a 5-star guide.

Thanks Matojo! I wanted to join a RP realm since I started Role Playing, I was confused because I read they had strict rules, so I was confused, I joined and asked but it was too early and no one was online. Now that I read this, I'm marking it as one of my Bookmarks for everytime I forget. I might join your realm so I can ask you some 2 or 3 things I have trouble with, again, Thanks for your guide, very helpful.

At any level below 120, servers tend to seem deserted. I usually RP by myself because there are few players my level (I'm only 110).
