I’m going to assume that you know how to play the game and have had a paid account at some point. If you’re brand new to the game, you might find other guides more accessible.
Free to play, F2P, Trial Account, Starter Edition are all the same thing.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Each F2P character is largely on their own.
Some key features are not available. For example, you will not be able to use the auction house or mailboxes and cannot trade with other players. You also cannot start groups but you can be invited to them. The Trading Post is half-enabled; you can look at the wares but can't earn the
Tendies currency
needed without a paid account. The full list of account limitations is at the
World of Warcraft Starter Edition Limitations
.
You’ll be leveling to 20 and playing without a guild. You will have no auction access and no bank alts. The heirloom mount is unobtainable so you will be on foot until you get riding at level 10.
The
end game
is either 20-29 bracket PVP, 5-man dungeons or world content.
The gameplay experience tends to remain consistent within each expansion. Blizzard tends to ignore low-level content when releasing patches so there's less thrash than in the paid game.
WHO WILL ENJOY IT?
You’ll probably enjoy the F2P experience if you like:
solo play
the low-level zones
not having to pay a subscription fee
playing for alternate goals and creating your own in-game challenges
rolling a new alt
a slower pace of change within WoW
You won’t enjoy it if you play for:
raiding
achievements, titles or collecting (gear, pets, mounts, etc).
guild participation
getting the best gear in the game
making gold
frequent content updates
GETTING STARTED
Server Choice
When choosing a server, realm pop and faction balance don’t matter because you won’t be joining a guild or participating in the paid-version’s end game. RP realms are livelier at low level. PVP realms will be harder because you have no chance at power parity.
Some servers may have more F2P activity, which can be coordinated outside the game. If this is important to you, find the community first and then make your server/faction choices accordingly.
Class choice
Buyer beware. With a limited toolset, a F2P class might not live up to its potential and may not play at all like the same class in the paid end-game.
At the time of writing, gameplay at level 20 is uneven. I haven't tried all the classes/specs yet, but I have found some that don't play well. For example, beast mastery hunter is focus starved and feels much worse than either survival or marksmanship.
I haven't found any truly broken classes though. That is, Builder/Spender classes have both by level 20. Stealth classes have stealth and openers. Healers are effective and can rez players. Tanks have taunts and mitigation. However, some classes lack signature abilities; for example, mages cannot teleport and bears lack an interrupt.
As usual, pet classes and those with strong burst damage have a slight quality of life edge and might be better choices for some end-game activity. If you intend on soloing dungeons, choose a class with strong sustained damage and self-healing.
If you have a particular goal in mind, just be aware that a particular class/spec might not be well-suited to it.
LEVELING
The leveling experience will be familiar, starting with quests. The big differences are that you will be on foot and you will not have a bank alt to help with gear, gold or storage.
Group finder for PVP and dungeons opens up at level 10 but PVP is a slow way to level.
Depending on how efficient you are, expect to spend about 5-6 hours /played to reach level 20.
Talents
You get your first talent at level 10 and by level 20, you will have 6 class points and 5 spec points. This is not a lot and, depending on your spec, it might not be enough to create satisfying gameplay. For example, some specs cannot get an AOE build without more points. It might be worth a look at the
talent calculator
before starting.
Gold
Gold is capped at 1000g, which is more than you can spend. It is not hard to hit the cap so spend freely. Buy the reagent tab in your bank for 100g.
Bags
You will need to loot or buy all of your bags from vendors. Crafting is not practical since you'll need to farm all the mats; you'll make enough gold in the meantime to just buy bags.
Bag vendors
in cities sell a 14 slot
Thick Hide Pack
. These are good buys while leveling.
Faction reputation is the best way to get 16 slot bags, which are the largest you'll use.
END GAME
Questing and World Zones
You will
not
be able to visit the Dragon Isles.
Mobs in world zones will scale with your level so it is easy to travel through zones in the 1-60, 10-60, and 20-60 ranges. This covers some zones in every expansion but not all of them, except for Vanilla. You can do quests in all of these places, which opens a truly huge selection of quests you can do.
The zones marked 25-60 are mostly accessible and can be traveled through. In zones marked 30+, travel will be difficult and the rewards few.
You can easily find mobs that will be a challenge to kill, some of which drop potentially excellent gear.
Elite and Rare NPCs
PVP
Since instanced PVP normalizes your level and attributes, you will be competitive in the 20-29 bracket if not overpowered. This can be a fun challenge if you enjoy low-level PVP. Available battlegrounds are Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, Eye of the Storm, Isle of Conquest, and Alteric Valley. Arena Skirmishes and PVP brawls are also available.
As at other levels, wins award a strongbox with random gear and possibly a
荣耀印记
.
Since you will be capped at level 20, compared to subscribed players in the bracket, you will not have abilities other players pick up between 21 and 29, including some critical talents.
Dungeons
Your dungeon finder list will be filled with
Battle for Azeroth dungeons
. There are plenty of people leveling alts and doing low level dungeons, so queue times should be reasonable. However, BFA dungeons were designed with mechanics that can wipe the group if not handled properly.
Lord Stormsong
, looking at you. This is beyond the ability of some people leveling in PUG groups. This means that runs vary in terms of quality, with some groups wiping multiple times and disbanding before finishing.
If you intend to do dungeons as your end-game, you will need to learn the dungeon mechanics and take on a leadership role, explaining them to your team.
You can walk into any dungeon in the same zones where you find quests. For example, Razorfen Kraul in Southern Barrens can be done. Mobs will scale to your level, and multiple elites will be difficult to kill solo outside of tank spec. You can't form groups, but if you have a paid-account leader, you may be able to find groups to do this content.
Dungeon groups are not at all balanced between players. Low-level characters will be doing far more damage/healing than higher-level ones. At level 20, you will often be carrying the group.
GEAR
Stats on gear are heavily normalized by item level with stats budgeted in a tight band so ilevel is directly proportional to power.
Dungeon Blues
Dungeon blues drop at ilevel 61 and have a chance to upgrade to epic at ilevel 67. Check out the dungeon journal to target specific pieces for your class & armor type.
Dungeon quest rewards have a chance to upgrade to an epic ilevel of 87. While each quest can only be done once, there are enough dungeons available at level 20 that you may be able to get quite a few pieces this way.
Note that loot tables in BfA dungeons have Azerite gear in head, chest, and shoulder slots. Those require level 50 so they won't drop for F2P players. Likewise, the neck slot in BfA was taken by the Heart of Azeroth so loot tables don't include this slot. If you want dungeon loot for these slots, you'll need to solo them or form non-LFG groups.
Heirlooms
All heirlooms scale to ilevel 54 at level 20 and are among the most powerful gear you can get. Heads and Legs are tied to guild rep so you won’t be able to get these. This is the easiest source for chest, shoulder, and neck slots.
You can get heirlooms for gold, through the Darkmoon Faire, or for Marks of Honor. Items bought will be available through the Collections tab for all characters on the same F2P account. Check out the Heirloom Collections Guide for more details.
Crafted gear
Crafted gear is generally not worth making for the power potential. Make it if you want it for transmog.
PVP gear
Gear that can be bought with
荣耀印记
can't be equipped at level 20 so this is not a viable strategy--except when it comes to heirlooms. Drops from
战场物资箱
are underpowered at ilevel 23. You will certainly have better from questing.
Single Source Drops
Gear that's dropped by a single mob or a type of mob has a chance to upgrade to epic quality. For example,
黑色食人魔之靴
drop from
洛格罗什
, which makes the epic version farmable. However, they current scale to ilevel 57, making this path to gearing less rewarding than dungeons from a stat budget perspective. This may be worth investigating for flavor, particular stats/effects, transmog, or fun.
PROFESSIONS
The three reasons to take professions are utility, buffs, and transmog. Since you can neither auction nor trade what you make, you will consume, wear or vendor everything.
You will be able to learn professions for any expansion you can get to. For example, you can take a portal to Shattrath and learn BC professions. However, this does not mean you will be able to equip or use what you make. Your ability to craft will far exceed your ability to consume.
Relic of the Past
Relics could be useful for transmog but doesn't improve your power.
Rank 1 relics yield ilevel 19 gear and require a player level of 14 so using them does create equipable gear. Rank 2 requires level 23, so isn't equipable.
Professions providing utility or buffs
Alchemy
Inscription
Cooking
Engineering
Enchanting
Professions for transmog
Blacksmithing
Leatherworking
Tailoring

Very interesting. And very thorough as well. This actually feels somewhat like a twink guide.
Might I recommend adding the links to all the bags? As well as under professions some of the items listed don't have links. And maybe adding a closer to the end of your guide giving people a quick bio of yourself/your character, what inspired you, etc would make it feel more complete.
Other than that, great guide! Especially for your first time.

Prior to Legion pvp changes it was possible to obtain the lvl 1 mount from pvp and darkmoon faire heirlooms. There were also the pvp trinkets in addition to the DMF ones. I have not tried this in a while, so cannot speak to if this is possible anymore.
Also prior to DMF fishing changes, a lvl5 character could obtain enough fish for the secret treasure quest that rewards 100 tickets. I can't speak to if this is possible anymore.
While I agree that low level enchanting is useless for what it produces, it is very easy to reach 75 skill for DMF monthly ticket quest by disenchaning vendor xmas sweaters in Dec. Another easy 75 skill profession for DMF is blacksmithing. Start out as a miner, then switch by making mostly grinding stones. For the other professions being useful to a twink, I agree with your choices.
You can also use the same army of DMF alts to farm holiday vendor items. One alt buys one item, while the next buys the next, etc. You may not be able to buy all holiday currency items this way, but you can get a lot. They also give you an increased chance at holiday mounts. Just make a bunch of tank/heal class alts for this. I prefer druids.
You can collect around 125 pets, quite a few toys, holiday mounts, pvp mounts, and all of the racial mounts. For the racial mounts, you can either create one of each or farm the rep past revered (for the bag), to exalted.
I don't care much about the level cap of 20, but I wish they would increase gold cap to 50-100g and open pet battles up to pet experience lvl 3 or 5.

Hello, Samendu. I believe one can still enjoy f2p and maximise achievements very well. I have written a
Guide
on this site about it. You are welcome to check it out.

Some 2023 updates
Chromie allows you to start each zone which will give you access to 3 LARGE bags:
BFA - Goat’s Tote from “Totes” in Tiragard Sound
Legion: Addie’s ink stained Bag in Highmountain at Nesingwary’s fightpath (get your Dalaran hearthstone for a 2nd hearth, then use portal to Stormwind/Origrimmar)
MOP: Grummelpack from a moderate quest line starting at one keg in kun-Lai summit (escort the packers)
Darkmoon Faire gives access to many heirlooms, account wide, collecting them is fun! Do the treasure quest once per toon to get the bonus tickets, buy the gear, then delete and re-create toon to do it again until you have full set for armor types. Or have multiple F2P lowbies and get 2 or 3 set pieces each month in a few hours.
Best gear is at level 20 in BFA from RARES in Drustvar, Tiragard, Zuldazar and Nazmir: rings, trinkets, weapon, offhand, gloves, wrist, feet, belt. Helm can be gotten from the Scroll quest and small treasure chests. There is a bonus set with up to 3 pcs for each armor type. You can go to the cross-faction zones by taking the enemy faction’s boat. Nothing stops Alliance from taking the boat to zuldazar, Horde can “hitch” a ride on the rudder of the ship in Stormwind harbor. Water walking potion from fishing daily quest rewards will help since the swim for both factions is tedious. Be careful in Voldun and Stormsong as these zones are not scaled down to 20.
Remaining gear you get from dungeon finder. You can use Chromie timeline to change which expansion to queue. Neck, chest, shoulder. Remember these do not drop in BFA dungeons.
Use all your gold, you can max gold easily in BFA zones from selling trash from mobs or questing. Use gold for:
Buy all bank slots and bags to fill them 14/16 slots are easy, there are bigger bags for sale, post here when you find them.
Buy the reagent bank
Get fast riding and some fun mounts
Buy pets
Train in cooking, buy all recipes as you can learn them
