Introduction
Hello there, my name is Julia. I'm a core raider in the guild Luce on Draenor, maining a
法师
.
I orginally posted this guide on
google documents
over
here
but after some thought I decided to rewrite it for wowhead and make it more widely accessable.
A small little tip, click on the spoiler buttons to see images clarifying the text!
What do I need?
We'll be using a website to do all the work for us
Raidbots
.
This website has taken the "Simulationcraft" application and made it more user friendly.
Other than the website you will need an addon called
"Simulationcraft"
.
This addon generates a string of data based on your character in game. This string of data contains:
Your character info such as: name, race, server, role, talents
Your artifact traits with crucible information on the relics
Current equipped gear
Any gear in your bagspace (Not gear in the bank, unless you have the bank opened whilst you generate the string!)
Quick usage of the SIMC addon
You are able to generate this string by typing /simc in game into your chat window.
After doing this you will get a large string of data, looking something like this:

You will be using this string to make the
Raidbots
website realise what your character is wearing.
An example of where these string are placed:
Different types of Simulations
Opening the Raidbots website you will see a dropdown menu with the following different types of simulations:
Stat weights
You use this sim to figure out what stats give you the most damage output or to create a string to put in
the Pawn addon
.
Top gear
You use this sim to figure out what gear combination optimally gives you the largest damage output.
Gear compare
You can use this sim to simulate gear you do not currently own yet and compare it to your current gear. Other uses could be to compare different gems and enchants on gear.
Relic compare
Using this tool, you are able to compare what relic and crucible traits give you the most damage gain.
Talent compare
Using this tool, you are able to simulate what talent combination gives you the most damage.
Quick sim
This sim gives a rough idea of how much damage your character would optimally do on average.
Advanced
As this is a simple guide, the advanced tab is out of the scope of this document.
Different simulation settings
The option menu will look like this:
We'll now go through each of the different options:
Iterations
This option allows you to select how many times the simulation will run the fight. You can just stick to 10.000 iterations in most cases. Please ask in the respective class discords if you are unsure if your class should sim more or less iterations.
Fight styles
This drop down menu shows you several different fight styles and will affect your sim heavily.
Number of Bosses
This will let you decide how many targets you are fighting. I personally use 3 types of sim's with this option: 1 boss - single target, 2 bosses - cleave, 3 bosses - aoe.
Fight Length
This makes your simulation run the amount of minutes you put in with 20% “wiggly” room. For example: if you want to sim a 5 minute fight it will sim from 4 to 6 minutes.
SIMC version
This gives you the option between; the nightly more experimental build and the weekly stable build. If you wish to simulate something according to very recent changes, you would use the nightly build to sim it as soon as possible or wait for the next weekly update.
Show all options
Flagging this button allows you to show all extra options. You can decide on food, flask, prepots, runes and if you want bloodlust or not in your simulation. Usually people disable bloodlust when simulating for dungeon content. To disable bloodlust; unflag the button called "Optimal raid buffs + bloodlust". Be sure to have your consumables enabled again if you unflag this button.
Detailed SIMC report
This button is found in the "Show all options" section of the options. If you enable this option you will get the full HTML report from SIMC. If you wish to share your found logs with other players who ask for the HTML report, you can simulate using this button or alternatively you can click on the "Full HTML report" link at your regular results.
PTR simulation
Is something we're not going to be looking at. Just keep it turned off for now.
APL
This window allows you to run a specific/personal APL. We won’t be going into this feature in this guide.
Report and notification options
This allows you to enable the website to notify when your simulation is done and to give it a name for the ease of the viewer.
Time to get started
Now we have gone over all the different features and essentials of the website, we will start going over the different types of simulations and how to use them to your advantage!
Using Stat weights
You simulate your stat weights to see by how much damage increases from every secondary and primary stat in the game. You are also able to generate a string you can imported into an addon called “pawn” to give you a very rough idea on how much of an upgrade certain items are by hovering over them in game.
The pawn addon.
Let's now step for step generate stat weights.
Step 1: Import data
Generate your simc string by typing /simc in game. Make sure to have your AOE talents on if you want to simulate AOE and single target talents if you wish to simulate single target!
Copy the string.
And paste the string in the data box!
Step 2: edit options
Fiddle with the options of your simulation to give you the most accurate simulation (Look at the amount of targets and fight length mostly here)
Step 3: start and wait
Press the green button "generate stat weights" to start your simulation!
You are now put into a wait list and your simulation will start as soon as ready. You can skip the line with patreon.
Step 4: Results
Your simulation is done and you now will have results!
You will see the character name at the top along with the average damage simmed and equipped gear / talents.
Below that you will find your stat weights. Looking at our example you will see that our shaman wants to focus on getting crit, then get some vers and mastery and after that some haste. We can also clearly see that intellect doesn't increase his damage by as much as the other stats.
They can now keep in mind that they want crit > vers = mastery > haste> > int as priority.
To the right we will see the details of our simulation, all the different options you put in and when / with what version it was simulated.
Below you are able to find the string for the pawn addon and below that you can find the original simc string you used for the simulation.
Using Top gear
Top gear is very useful to find the right combination of gear. If you're unsure what trinkets or set pieces to use for single target or aoe, or are you unsure about all your gear in general you can easily check that here.
Step 1: Import data
Generate your simc string by typing /simc in game. Make sure to have your AOE talents on if you want to simulate AOE and single target talents if you wish to simulate single target!
Copy the string.
And paste the string in the data box!
Step 2: Select gear
Simply highlight all the different piece you want to test!
Now we will select the gems, enchants, the amount of legendaries equipped and azerite powers wanted.
Step 3: edit options
Fiddle with the options of your simulation to give you the most accurate simulation (Look at the amount of targets and fight length mostly here)
Step 4: start and wait
Press the green button "find top gear" to start your simulation!
You are now put into a wait list and your simulation will start as soon as ready. You can skip the line with patreon.
Step 5: Results
Your simulation is done and you now will have results!
We can see our shaman's equipped talents and average dps for highest simming gear at the top. To our right we can see the input options and version of the simulation.
Now we see a big square in the middle that shows us our top gear. This gives us a indication of what gear combination will do the most damage for us.
Below this you are able to see any simulated gear sets that did worse than our top gear. You are also able to see by how much dps and even how much % dps by enabling "Show relative difference"
Using Gear compare
Using gear compare we can simulate gear pieces on us without us owning the gear piece beforehand, however the feature is mostly used to simulate best enchants and gems for your character.
Step 1: Import data
Generate your simc string by typing /simc in game. Make sure to have your AOE talents on if you want to simulate AOE and single target talents if you wish to simulate single target!
Copy the string.
And paste the string in the data box!
Step 2: input gear
You will see your current equipped gear above. You'll make a new gearset underneath. This new gear set is a duplicate of your equipped gear except for anything you decide to add and then in turn overwrite.
You do that by searching for an item name.
Then select the slot (For fingers and trinkets) item level, gems, azerite powers and enchants.
Step 3: edit options
Fiddle with the options of your simulation to give you the most accurate simulation (Look at iterations, fight style, amount of bosses, fight length and amount of pantheon trinkets here.)
Step 4: start and wait
Hit the green button "Compare items" to start your simulation!
You are now put into a wait list and your simulation will start as soon as ready. You can skip the line with patreon.
Step 5: results
Your simulation is done and you now will have results!
What we can see here is the general character information such as talents, gear and average dps with the different gearsets.
To the right we see the options you put in for the simulation and the version of the simulation.
Below we are able to see the comparison between the different simmed gear sets.
We can see our current equipped gear at the bottom with our simmed Unstable Arcanocrystal doing 3,1% more damage. We can now conclude getting a ilvl 1200 Unstable Upgrade will be an upgrade for our shaman.
Also added at these results is the "Use as template" button under the options information. You can press this button to redo the simulation and add in other items without having to re-enter all the data.
Using Talent compare
With this tool we can review different talent setup's and see which one is more viable for what type of fight. Generally AOE or ST but also cleave, light/ heavy movement and other types of fight styles.
Step 1: Import data
Generate your simc string by typing /simc in game. Make sure to have your AOE talents on if you want to simulate AOE and single target talents if you wish to simulate single target!
Copy the string.
And paste the string in the data box!
Step 2: Choose talents to compare
Now we're going to highlight several different talent builds we want to compare to each other. You can add new sets to compare by pressing the "+ ADD TALENT SET" button at the bottom.
Step 3: edit options
Fiddle with the options of your simulation to give you the most accurate simulation (Look at iterations, fight style, amount of bosses, fight length here)
Step 4: start and wait
Press the green button "compare talents" to start your simulation!
You are now put into a wait list and your simulation will start as soon as ready. You can skip the line with patreon.
Step 5: results
Your simulation is done and you now will have results!
What we can see here is the general character information such as talents, gear and average dps with the different talents setup's.
To the right we see the options you put in for the simulation and the version of the simulation.
We can see our results in the square below. This shows our current equipped talents DPS after our own name.
Below that we see the two other talent builds we tried to sim. Each of them having their own damage output.
Also added at these results is the "Use as template" button under the options information. You can press this button to redo the simulation and add in other items without having to re-enter all the data.
