I had the chance to sit down and ask some questions with some of the top-ranked Raider.io players on the US realms about the upcoming MDI proving grounds.

With the new season comes the new Affix

. This affix requires a lot more timing and AOE for teams to deal with. How do you feel about the new affix compared to what you dealt with in season 1?

influenced the way you pulled specific packs and slow you down, whereas reaping doesn't really impact how you pull packs. Just have to be mindful about when you hit the reaping breakpoints. And reaping encourages you to do big pulls by trying to drag the reaping wave onto something else
Do you feel like this allows a wider range of classes in this MDI?
We'll see, there are some gimmicky things you can do with reaping on lower keys that you prob can't get away with on Live. So big AOE classes that aren't especially good at single target might still be worth running in MDI. Tough to say because you never get a chance to see that environment on live.
I see you have been running with a Warrior tank and three melees lately. Will your team be focused around a full melee comp?
A lot of melee classes have good burst AOE, so they handle reaping well. Still not sure what comp will look like till we get to play around with it on tournament realm
Proving grounds gives a chance for all players across the globe to compete. Do you have any advice or tips you would give to a new player trying to compete in this E-sport?
Get a team you like playing with because your gonna be spending a lot of time with them, and don't bring preconceptions from live servers to TR. Lots of things that don't work on Live can work in lower keys with lots of practice.
What affix do you think will cause Method NA the most problems this season?

Nothing specific, we were close last year, just need execution.

What do you think of the new season affix

? Do you find it easier or harder to manage in terms of difficulty and speed versus season 1 infested?
It's Easier in that there's no risk of a chain reaction that completely ruins the key but it can be more of a time investment if you don't plan your route properly, waiting for reaping mobs to run halfway across the map is not ideal
How do you feel Brewmaster Monk compares to the other tank specs this season?
Warrior is pretty popular this season because on pulls where

mitigates most incoming damage.

can allow for insane damage, but not all dungeons are suited for warrior in my opinion and the utility of monk can outshine other tanks
What affixes this season do you think will be the most difficult for those competing in the MDI?

since the key levels are so low that the only thing that can hold you back is an affix that prevents big pulls.

Ya bursting is over-tuned at the moment, in my opinion, they buffed it because people mostly ignored it throughout most of season 1, but they went overboard with the changes.
What do you think the biggest challenge of playing a Brewmaster is?

How do you think the level of keystones in the MDI will affect your team which is used to running much higher keystones
It will be changing the way we look at dungeons a lot. We will have to change up pulls and take more risks to complete them as fast as possible. With the lower key levels, there is more room for that.
What affix do you think teams will struggle the most with?
It really depends on the team and composition in my opinion.

is my personal least favorite affix. But affixes like

really throw a wrench into your strategy a lot of the time, because the higher mob density changes a lot of things.
There are going to be many Demon hunters played in the MDI. What do you think makes you stand out more than the others?
I don't often compare myself to other players but all I can say is that I try my best to minimize and maximize my damage in every situation possible. I get asked to run with other groups to push keys because I've been known to be reliable and maximize my output.
Will this be your first time going through the proving grounds?
Yes, I didn't play at all in legion so I never had a chance to compete before. I was very active in pushing fast times in Challenge modes in MoP/Early WoD though.
A lot of players that are learning the game or trying to become better look at the top players like yourself. Do you have any advice to those new demon hunters?
Honestly my best advice to new players who want to get better is to just keep playing and running keys. I know it is not always easy but play with people who are better than you. If you're the best player in your group you're in the wrong group. Also, don't be afraid to go into the better player streams and ask questions, watch what they do etc..

I still have some planning in the works regarding that I have a bunch of friends with plans and were looking for a tank, so nothing official yet. I am eager as hell to compete in it!
With a wide range of players using both Fire and Frost specs in Mythic Plus and the low level of the MDI keystones. Which spec do you think will shine better?
Yea with the low level I believe every mage will be playing frost, just because of the fact that frost has no cool-down based damage, and in a quick key you'll get

(2 min CD) off then you would in a high key, and as well frost has insane scaling the bigger the mob pulls get, very fast resets on

in keys like that. Fire shines a lot harder in those single target dungeons such as temple and kings rest but mainly at high levels.

is in terms of difficulty, skill, and timing?
the thing that made infested so unique was the number of different routes you do, I've played with blood Dks like Snapxd, Nerfdk, and Handssomedk and they all generally had different routes. With reaping your route will probably only change depending on affixes, I do believe reaping creates faster gameplay because people are pulling reaping packs on top of bosses and there is a lot of movement with all the

. infested created very slow gameplay where you crowd controlled an infested mob and killed it after. Reaping is probably so much better for a crowd to watch in an MDI setting than infested. Imagine all the reaping+boss pulls we will see in MDI.
Players around the globe look up to players such as yourself for ideas and advice. Do you have any advice for mages that are trying to become better in the Mythic plus environment?
The main advice I can give and that I actively use is always think what you can do better mid pull, this could be in terms of your DPS rotation, which mob you are ST focusing in an AOE pack, or even if your group wipes I always ask myself what could I have done better? Could I have saved my

Out of all the dungeons in BFA. What is your favorite overall dungeon and what is your Favorite boss fight?
When its an affix where it lets you pull an entire dungeon, I absolutely love
freehold
and
mother lode
because the tank just does fearless big pulls and it makes mages absolutely own. In terms of boss fights. The
First boss
in Kings rest for sure, because as frost they generally put you in charge of slowing the mobs and you have a lot of immunity for

resets when there are a lot of adds up. The

in mother lode would be a close second, hitting over 400k

on its difficulty in skill and timing for the MDI?
Infested was a pretty unfun affix in my opinion. It felt arbitrarily slowed down progress in the dungeon and severely conflicted with certain affixes like

. Reaping is a lot more fun to deal with, as the mobs are relatively weak and you can do some fun pulls with Reaping mobs + additional packs. It helps with dungeons pacing a lot and is just overall a better affix since MDI is all about speed, it should be a much better viewing experience.
As a top rated Balance druid, What difficulties do you think you will mostly deal with when it comes to the MDI?
Well depending on the key level Blizzard decides on, Balance druid probably won't be used at all in MDI. Our biggest strength right now is the safety we bring to the tank with

. Our AOE dmg, and therefore our ability to contribute to the fastest dungeon clear possible, is lacking at the moment. We can do very good AOE, but our ramp time doesn't allow for the efficient killing of Reaping waves compared to many other classes. So if the key levels are too low and the tanks don't need the utility, I can't see any teams using a balance druid.

utility is only useful when pushing very high keys, as healer mana isn't a problem.

is very strong in some dungeons, but not required by any means. Generally, I think when going for speed, you want to forsake utility classes like Boomie. Go for big dick damage classes like Demo lock, Spriest, Frost Mage. Not to mention Melee specs like Rogue, DH, and Ret Pally.
All the players around the globe look to the top-rated IO players for advice and tips. What would you say to the players trying to learn to play Balance at a high level?
Depends on your definition of 'High level' I guess. Outside of

weeks. Boomie is a bit worse off than a lot of other DPS atm. Our traits that in theory exist to empower our AOE, are pretty under tuned and leave us in a bad place unless you are pushing the very Highest key levels. Ramp time on trash mobs is really distressing for a lot of players. I get people all the time telling me they think they suck because they can't figure out how to do relevant damage in M+. If you insist on trying to make the class work, the best you can do is find some consistency.
Out of all the BFA dungeons. Which Overall dungeon do you enjoy the most and which Dungeon boss do you like the most?
Freehold
is easily the best dungeon. The routing flexibility in there is awesome. Linear dungeons are fine but when every dungeon is linear things can get boring very quickly. You have so many options in terms of what trash you want to pull for percentage and even what order you can take the bosses in. Also lots of trash so lots of AOE :D.
It's hard to pick a favorite boss because most of the dungeon bosses are really boring and easy. And the ones that are not easy tend to only be hard due to RNG. If you're pushing a high freehold key, and
Eudora
on Council o' Captains decides to use her random shoot ability on you 5 times in a row, there is nothing you can do to outplay that damage, you will probably just die. Bosses that can randomly murder you like that don't feel very good, but bosses that are also as simple as "execute 1 mechanic properly and win" don't feel good either. I guess my answer would be personally I just prefer raiding for good boss content :D. M+ is fun for other reasons.

. How would you rate reaping on its difficulty in skill and timing?
I think reaping is a significantly better affix and In my opinion, you will see much bigger pulls because of infested being gone. Infested as an affix was extremely annoying, reaping is much more exciting and really brings back the big AOE DPS that legion dungeons had. Overall having a good reaping timing is important because if you start a pull with 5 large mobs and 20 small mobs and kill the small mobs and reaping spawns. Its quite bad however many people have been pulling easy bosses with reaping even on Tyrannical weeks.
Compared to other ranged DPS that you will see in the MDI how well do you think Warlock competes on the MDI stage?
At the moment if warlocks do not receive any changes then demonology is one of the best specs in the game at doing raw damage. However, warlock utility does not have easy access to an interrupt or crowd control ability besides

. However, it does have

. The reason demonology is absolutely wild is because of its competitive AOE damage and its insane single target damage. Think about old sub rogue single target, but you don't need other targets or set up around the boss.
All the players around the world look to the top-rated for advice and tips. Do you have any advice for those learning or trying to become better at warlock in a Mythic Plus Environment?
At the moment I would say the best thing you could do as a warlock in M+ is try to abuse our powerful AOE CDs. Obviously with demonology being extremely powerful as it stands atm. If demonology is nerfed warlock is in a pretty week overall state for M+. While all specs do great damage they don't really bring anything to the table besides that. Especially when you compare classes with debuffs like Demon Hunter, Monk, or others like Rogue who have great utility. It is extremely hard to not bring those classes. But overall warlock in M+ is just a big DPS drone of a sort. Other specs do have a

, interrupts, and dispels available at any time. We have a utility like using

on the last boss of siege to help the healer have to heal a lot less allowing him to DPS gaining your team time on that boss. With destruction, if

is ever a good talent you can use

What affix do you think will cause the most issues for your team in the

?
In my opinion

is by far the most annoying affix in the game as it just slows everything down and causes you to change all your pulls and overall will make the dungeon a lot slower. Suddenly strategies for dungeons like
motherlode
where you want to mass pull no longer work etc.
崩裂
is difficult but can be managed with timing and immunities whereas bolstering just stops your pulls completely.

is prob the next affix that can really mess you up as well in terms of large pulls. However, there is 1 class and spec that for some reason can still AOE the explosives.
Out of all the dungeons in BFA which is your overall favorite dungeon? Which is your favorite boss?
Freehold
is my favorite simply because it is a nonlinear dungeon similar to
Atal'dazar
where you can do any boss in any order for the most part and go wherever you want. To me its the reason why
Court of Stars
was such a great dungeon same with
Arcway
.
My favorite boss is tricky... I really like
Galvazzt
in
Temple
because it reminds me a lot of the
Fallen Avatar
in
Tomb of Sargaras
and i really liked that boss. The HPS and DPS checks on Galvazzt makes it exciting on high

keys, but the
Witch Boss
in
Waycrest
is really fun simply due to how many abilities you have to deal with. Another boss would be the 3rd boss in
Kings rest
due to the insane amount of mechanics which makes it feel similar to a Raid boss. So IDK which one to pick from those 3

Summary
Most of these players are gathering their teams and preparing for the attempt to compete with the best in the world.
After interviewing many players on their thoughts of the upcoming MDI and their respective classes. Everyone seems to love Freehold. In my opinion as well as many other players we want to see more sandbox oriented dungeons that give players more freedom for strategies and team design.
Keep an eye out for affixes like Bolstering, Bursting, and Explosive as they will most likely cause the biggest difficulties for these teams competing to deal with in terms of difficulty and skill. Enjoy watching the fast-paced season 2 affix Reaping!
