Wandering In Azeroth: A Guide To Your Solo Adventures

!!! WARNING
This guide is now two xpacs behind current content, you can consider it to be massively outdated.
Nevertheless, you can still find some data bits that are still of use, and the methodology I used can be adapted by anyone to narrow down a few classes you'd like to wander with to one.
I'm still in the process to decide if I'm to sub again, but sometimes life happens. Be safe and happy yall.
v ---- this is the old warning.
!!! Yes, I know, that the guide hasn't been updated for 9.0.1, but for various reasons I'm not active in WoW. The moment I get an active sub, I'll start again updating this guide. Most info in here is still valuable, but classes aren't up-to-date an as they went under a massive overhaul it's a big work. That shouldn't be much a problem as the first months into an xpac aren't the best time for solo play.
See you in 9.2 or 9.3.
Detailed purpose
A bit of my life, although I used to raid and although WoW is a MMORPG I still love to Wander in Azeroth (and elsewhere), looking for less famous quests or toys.
This guide is what I would have wanted before running for
博学者
title (in 3.x).
Why become a Wanderer?
You want to do something else than raiding or PvPing
You have less common connecting hours or odd play time windows (eg. sailors, people who work at night or in hospitals, people with insomnia)
You might be interrupted many times during a gaming session (if you play at work or have infants near you)
You have a slow PC / slow connection so you'd rather spend time in less crowded zones ?
You love to embrace WoW exciting and gigantic world and not only going round between the ship and the mailbox ?
You love pets, toys, transmog, achievements, mounts and hidden quests
You are part of a progress guild and you need some me-time to blow off some steam
You are back in the game for a few days/weeks and want to feel WoW without grinding current content?
You are bored with the content, often at the end of a patch, even worse at the end of an xpac
Or, simply want to Wander ?
This is NOT a guide about soloing current content raids or dungeons (in which case you should read a guide like
Soloing Overview Guide - an introduction for all classes
) and this is NOT an optimization guide for BfA PvE and/or PvP, although it can be useful to have some current content soloing capabilities, especially rares and elites.
This guide only deals about Wanderers.
You might use your main character or create an alt fit for Wandering, whatever the server or the faction as achievements, pets, mounts and toys beeing BoA since a while. Creating an alt elsewhere can be a nice way to evade your guild or mates to have some time off. It might also be a good way to spend a level boost.
As the concept of being a Wanderer is now understood, you'll deal with some issues this guide intends to solve (or ease):
Moving as fast as possible while questing/looking for NPC/chests or else
Travelling as fast as possible between continents or from one point of a continent to another
Dealing with fatigue and underwater breathing
Locating quests, mobs, instance entrances
Handling large amounts of stuff in inventory
Also, not dying too much
Finally, remember that this guide only addresses max level players, with a fair amount of gear of the current tier (WQ/dungeons).
The place of solo play in WoW
Wow hasn't been made for solo right away, to be honest this play style hasn't been officially acknowledged until only a few years back, but here's a chronology of Wow features catered for solo players.
A kind reminder before we dig the past, WoW has been released in 2004, so 16 years ago in a few weeks.
What I try to do here is to give insight of what has been made in the past for solo players, to offer a view on its acknowledgement by our game editor as a real playing style that has people for which this is one or sometimes the only kind of activities they run. To do this I combed through both documented and undocumented patch changes since Cataclysm.
The list below is a timeline of changes made for solo or useful for Wanderers.
Patch 3.0.2 (October '08)
, introducing achievements
Introduced as part of the WotLK prepatch. They keep track of most of players activity in-game. Some provide valuable rewards such as mounts, pets, toys, titles, armor sets ...
Among the hundreds of achievements introduced, some like
千奇百怪的漫长旅行
or
博学者
offer very long grind with nice rewards to players.
New ones are added at each patch, there are more like 3500 available as of 8.3.7.
Patch 4.0.3 (November '10)
, introducing Archeology
This secondary profession is all about lore, stories, famous NPCs and exploration.
Patch 4.3.0 (November '11)
MC and BWL solo entry
This have been generalized a year later in 5.1.0.
Patch 5.0.4 (August '12)
, Pet Battle System
A new playing style, hundreds of pets to collect in every zone of the world, battling with trainers. PvP battles are also a thing.
Patch 5.1.0 (November '12)
, Blizzard acknowledges solo play as a play style
Starting with MoP, Blizzard indirectly acknowledged this gameplay when a succession of events happened during patch 5.1.0, late November 2012:
the first occurence of
缰绳来袭
offering collectable pets in older raids (Vanilla ones for a start)
nerfs done to previously unsoloable raid bosses, such as
Razorgore the Untamed
(Blackwing Lair),
Viscidus
(AQ40) and
High Warlord Naj'entus
(Black Temple)
The removal of the obligation to be in a raid group to enter older raids
Brawler's guild 1st appearance
World Bosses went under changes of tapping mode and had smaller and more predictible spawn timers as well as reduced number of spawn locations
Subsequent patches digest
Changes like the previous ones were made more frequent after 5.1.0. Some changes weren't specifically or at all made for solo players but they introduced a trend, like WB spawn or tap system, as well as the 11 level legacy rule (content 11 level below cap is considered legacy, doesn't need raid group anymore and falls under legacy loot too).
Patch 5.2.0 (March '13)
made Galleon spawn more frequently. Note that at this time, this wasn't a change catered for solo players but soon every WB / rare spawn went under the same changes, especially those with a mount in their loot tables.
Patch 5.4.0 (September '13)
introduced Proving Grounds, a solo challenge.
Patch 6.0.2 (October '14)
-
Valithria Dreamwalker
(the sleeping dragon in ICC that must be healed to win the fight) can now be skipped, the door across the room is now open.
-
Thorim (Ulduar)
has been nerfed to ease solo.
-
奥里多米
has been introduced to queue for LFR (Dragon Soul)
-
游学者福云
,
游学者辛恒
and
游学者韩恩
offer solo queue for scenarios, heroic scenarios and LFR
Patch 7.0.3 (July '16)
offered:
-
大法师提迈尔
introduced to queue for LFR
- One of the best toy ever,
柔软的泡沫塑料剑
, made to allow max level players to damage a low level NPC without killing it, as it's required by a few quests
Patch 7.2.5 (June '17)
offered:
-
Gorefind
in Hellfire Citadel made soloable
-
Hans'gar and Franzok
made soloable too
Patch 7.3.5 (January '18)
nerfed Blackrock Foundry
Blast Furnace
encounter
Patch 8.0.1 ((July '18)
introduced
Legacy Loot
giving the player as many loots as a full raid or party would have been entitled to receive.
Patch 8.1.0 (December '18)
introduced Archmage Timear as a NPC offering the player to queue for Legion LFR wings
Patch 8.2.0 (June '19)
introduced a long awaited change for the Hellfire Assault in Hellfire Citadel making it easier to be soloable by every spec.
Patch 8.2.5 (September '19)
nerfed an achievement that previously needed 6 people,
只有忏悔者才能……
now requires only 2.
Conclusions
Although it took several years after players began to play legacy content solo, Blizzard acknowledged our playstyle. From times to times, nerfs are applied and bits of content are introduced. They often try to hide things in older content, as a way to revive zones we forgot. They also made nerfs in other directions, like when they reduced the quantity of gold dropped by some raid bosses of TBC raids (Patch 4.1.0), as players used to solo farm these for raw gold.
The patch history above is also a way to predict things, we already know that as of BfA, content is legacy when its level is 11 levels lower than level cap, so 109 and below as of BfA. These numbers will be updated as soon as 9.0.1 (Shadowlands prepatch) becomes live. We might expect full Legion content to be soloable, like Mythic Raids.
We also might see a NPC to queue for BfA LFR and Island Expeditions appear sometimes during Shadowlands. We can even expect a nerf for Warfronts and for some encounters, like Opulence or ones in Crucible of Storms.

Character creation/selection
Realm
You have to choose a realm between:
Your own realm (or one you got a char), it's easier, you have access to money and professions (as long as you stay in the same faction)
A desert realm, it's sometimes easier to do rare camping or find rare items (like crystals in Azsuna) when the realm is empty, but the AH hasn't many client
A high pop realm, better AH, worse competition
I'll advise you to either stay where your other chars are or to find a nice low-to-mid pop RP realm, in my opinion you'd rather have a fewer AH clients than more competition while you camp for a rare spawn.
As you'd run many content by yourself, low pop realms are perfect as they min less competition for everything. Since high-end content is cross-realm (save for Mythic raiding until Hall of Fame is complete), you won't be disadvantaged.
The only caveat to this choice is when you need rare products or consumables from the AH, one example that come to my mind is the consumables needed to get
太阳龙宝宝
, even in a mid-pop I had issues getting them all at once.
Once it's done, let's choose a char.
Race
Some races are better than other ones, but keep in mind this guide is solo-oriented, perks I did not consider to be the best for a Wanderer can fit better with other part of the content, like MM, raiding or PvP).
Although one should be able to play the race he fancies the most, some are just better than other to be an Wanderer. The color code on the trait is obvious.

血精灵

,
兽人
,
牛头人
and
巨魔
as well as /
熊猫人
don't have useful perk for a wanderer.
So, to sum up a little (before choosing a class), we see that on 21 available races, only some have one or more really useful traits. While you should play whatever race you want, the ones we detailed offer a little something more.
If this alt won't be played in content where other racials might be of help, Humans are a strong pick for the reputation boost, Vulpera for the second hearthstone that can be set anywhere, Dark Iron Dwarf or Night Elf are nice too, and Mag'Har Orc if you don't want to Paladins or DK (as the mounted speed buffs won't stack).
Class
Do not create your toon right now, we still have to choose a class. You should consider reading
Battle For Azeroth Class Utility Overview
as it'll be a more thorough analysis of BfA class utility.
Abilities that are a must have:
Movement speed boost or enhanced base speed
Instant cast damage spells, repeatable. Higher range abilities lead to a better mark.
AoE, especially point blank ones (no need to target a mob or a zone)
Utilities, including portals, mount speed and other useful abilities for a Wanderer
Except for the 3 classes I play regularly, I used 110 class trial to inspect every spec and talent. I deliberately excluded healing specs.
You need to remember that low level mobs won't attack spontaneously, some even flee when hurt. It's important to save as more time as possible while looking for, killing and looting mobs.
If you want more detail about different kinds of AoE, please check
this link
.
A quick note
: this guide does NOT deal with "extreme exploration" at all. While mildly tolerated by Blizzard, this is a very specific activity for which some classes are almost mandatory when exploring without flying, warriors, hunters, warlocks or DH are needed due to their not targeted mobility spells. This won't be taken into consideration here.

Strong picks include Balance druid, BM hunter, arcane mage, shamans, Assa or Sub rogues. Tanking specs are always good (blood DK, guardian druid are top one), DPS specs from a class with a tanking spec always offer to DPS spec some tools (taunt, healing), save for Warriors who lack AoE and utilities.
We'll see in next paragraph that if you want to Wander in the current expansion and in the previous one, you'll need to buff your char a little.
War Mode
WM is a quite new feature, allowing players to declare themselves open to world PvP. Enabling WM gives access to 4 PvP talents that you can use in open world as well as arenas/BGs. Some of them are interesting for a Wanderer, so I'll advise you to enable it but they don't work in dungeons/raids/scenarios (including quest ones post-MoP).
Remember that while you have War Mode enabled, players from other faction can kill you almost anywhere in the world.
Here's the list of what I think is relevant and can justify, or help you choose, turning on War Mode.

Wandering in BfA
At this point we focused on older content. You might want as well do some achievements by yourself in the current expansion.
And possibly run some challenges in the previous one. I'll warn you, even if BfA made group finding for rares and WQ easier (and nice), you might want to do this by yourself. I'm thinking about the near-monthly quest in Darkshore warfront involving killing 12 rares
残余的威胁
/
残余的威胁
) or some dragon-bordered WQ. You may want to solo them, as well as some elites in quests. Some classes cannot. Not at the moment.
If you want to Wander in the 8.x zones, you'll choose a tanking class or a class with tanking abilities (plus BM hunters)
.
Please note that in 8.3, Legion mythic raids are still complicated (if not unfeasible) to achieve solo, even with a tanking spec and ilvl 460 gear. Legion WB are still quite long to take down and might hurt. The same used to apply to greater invasion points in Argus. At the end of 8.3, a lot of these issues will be outdated as DPS will be huge compared to 8.2, and some nerfs will apply.
For expansions older than Legion, any race/class combination will do.
Kindly note that even if Blizzard acknowledged solo as a part of the game a long time ago, some raid (or raid-like) mechanisms are not tuned for solo or are very uneasy to run. Let's think about the first part of Deathwing in
巨龙之魂
, the first boss of
地狱火堡垒
and I might forget other especially some Legion bosses with mandatory tank swap mechanic that you'll need to outdps.
Other prerequisites
Guild
Your character should be in a guild, and achieve a revered reputation with it if possible.
Being in a guild allows one to benefit from guild perks
骑乘加速
and
急速炉石
.
You'll need to grind your guild's reputation to gain two transportation items we'll see below.
License
Your character must acquire
大师级骑术
.
Achievements
Except if you want to catch up on older expansions (your Wanderer character might result from the use of a Character Boost), you'll need to have completed
德拉诺探路者
,
破碎群岛探路者,第一章
/
破碎群岛探路者,第二章
and
争霸艾泽拉斯探路者,第一章
.
See the guides below, these achievements will give you enhanced mount speeds in their respective areas. The Draenor part will require you to work a bit in your garrison (
Guide to the Garrison Stables
).
Reputations
Maxing out a few reps won't hurt, except if it's one of your purpose (see above and below). Amongst the ones useful,
卡鲁亚克
is a good start and it will take you 2 weeks to hit exalted (this faction provides a fishing pole that let you breath underwater).
Professions
So, once you have a toon created (and upped to level 120), you'd think about professions.
I'd exclude gathering professions as they provide no other advantage than allowing you to make some extra gold mining older ore or gathering long-forgotten herbs.
From my point of view, a good Wanderer should learn and maximize (as possible) these professions, with a focus on older expansions for the first one :
工程学
is by far the best profession for a Wanderer. Between

, you'll have a real
终极版侏儒军刀
on your person, with bank access, vendor, mailbox, and transportation devices.
附魔
is a solid choice as
分解
is a great way to make some gold and to reduce the amount of junk in your bags. Battle for Azeroth gave enchanters these bracers enchants:
迅捷炉石
,
安全炉石
and
清凉炉石
, all of three being useful.
I strongly advise you to choose these two professions, they are way more useful than anything else on the field.
As for the other professions,
炼金术
can provide some useful potions (often available on the AH) like
德拉诺水下呼吸药剂
or
德拉诺水上行走药剂
. The same applies to
锻造
as most of the useful items are not bound.
裁缝
allows to find extra cloth which can be sold.
锻造
and
铭文
can replace the need for a friendly
潜行者
as you'll find some chests but none of these professions are as useful as the two I mentioned earlier, and chests are not BoP, you can even create a Mechagnome alt as they can open chests too.
You might also use your alts and friends skills to craft you some potions, tools or use the AH.
Finally, you can also pick gathering professions to make some gold, certain materials can reach high prices if they are used in some high profit selling recipes.
Useful gear, tools and consumables
At this point, we have a max level character with two professions (and skills).
What would we need to optimize our Wandering ?
To begin with, at least 4 28-slot bags. Find the perfect match in
The Big Bag Guide
.
An useful advice would be to create a bank alt located between the bank, the AH and the vault. You'll mail him all BoE stuff and mats. If the alt has its own guild with 6 tabs it'll allow you to store nearly 600 items or mat stacks.
Don't forget to put some 28+ slot bags in your bank and unlock the reagent bank.
And to answer the question "What would I need anything as I can fly everywhere?", we might respond that some zones are still no fly zones and still good places to Wander are they are loaded with quests, reps and mounts.
Below, the last last no-fly zones list, even if you unlocked the achievements allowing flying in the corresponding expansions (caves and houses not included):
zones:
秘蓝岛
,
秘血岛
,
永歌森林
,
幽魂之地
or
奎尔丹纳斯岛
, as well as the two cities
埃索达
and
银月城
zones:
熔火前线
,
托尔巴拉德半岛
as well as
暗月岛
zones:
雷神岛
,
永恒岛
and
巨兽岛
zones of Argus:
克罗库恩
,
安托兰废土
and
艾瑞达斯
Every instanciated zone like dungeons, raids, scenarios, battlefronts and battlegrounds, where mounts, when available, are never allowed to fly
These zones are almost every time high-end content of their expansion and are filled with content (instances, pets, mounts, achievements...) involving some grind, thus forcing a wannabe Wanderer to spend some time there.
Mounts
Mounts are a matter of preferences, however, half a dozen of the 600 or 700 mounts available have a little something you might need while Wandering.
Mounts with vendors
Only three mounts provide us with vendors:
旅行者的苔原猛犸象缰绳
and
旅行者的苔原猛犸象缰绳
, available for a reasonable (maximum) amount of .
雄壮远足牦牛缰绳
, offered in exchange of a less reasonable
雄壮商队雷龙的缰绳
which you can buy for (you read it right, it's 5 million gold)
All of them have a standard vendor with repair capabilities. The Yak come with transmog and the brutosaur with an AH. The first of the list is cheap enough for everyone to buy.
Water-walking mounts
If you don't play a class with included water-walking ability, you'd really want a water-walking mount.
As of 8.2, there are no more mount with included water-walking ability so you can buy
充气护蹄
and use it on any mount you'd like.
Please note that this equipment share the same drawback as
冰霜之路
, a single damage make you fall in the water.
Also, please refer to hunters class traits above as some specific pets can give its master the ability to walk on water.
Up on these mounts, exploration and travel are made easier as you can use the open water as an highway, with far less denizens than on land. Some zones, especially in BfA before flying was made available as multiple zones are filled with deep water.
Aquatic mounts
Unless you've chosen to play a druid, you'll need an aquatic mount at some point (try this
secret quest line
which can, eventually have an aquatic mount as reward).
There are more than a dozen of them (see
this list
) available but they require either tedious grind or a high dose of luck.
One of them,
波塞冬斯的缰绳
, is a 100% drop from a rare NPC in Vash'jir and can sometimes be found at the AH for less than .
Flying mounts with a passenger seat
If you bought one of the mount with vendors, you'll have the ability to carry two passengers on ground. But sometimes, you'll have to bring with you one of your mates to defeat an unsoloable challenge and it might be nice to carry them in the middle of nowhere.
There's a single option available:
时沙之瓶
, costing sometimes as low as at the AH.
Mount equipment
Since 8.2, you can use one of the four mount equipment on any of your mounts. And you should, depending on the spec you play:
快步护蹄
: +20% speed on your mount
鞍座降落伞
: a chute
舒心驭手骑甲
: preventing you from being dazed
充气护蹄
: water walking on any mount!
BfA specific gear
Two pieces are interesting.
The first one is
艾泽拉斯之心
, you'll have equipped. As of 8.3 you can equip essences, some of them providing significant advantages:
烈焰熔炉
, the major power is a 2 charges, 30s CD 40 yd direct damage
空间涟漪
, the minor is a passive speed increase
沉抑之球
, the minor offers some speed when hit
Some other major offer AoE, but always in close range, and with 1 to 2 min CDs.
The second one is the trinket from 8.2 zone Mechagon.
Starting with 8.2, you can have a
口袋计算装置
you'll be able to customize with punch cards from different colors, like a new gem system.
Although red and yellow cards are interesting in PvE and PvP, our interest lies in blue cards:
冲流发生器
: swim speed
氧气补充装置
: underwater breathing duration increase
应急反重力装置
: a nice automatic parachute without cooldown
More information can be found in this guide :
Mechagon Punch Cards for the Pocket-Sized Computation Device
Last, you can work towards a set of equipment with more speed on it, like in
How To Create A Battle For Azeroth Speed Gear Set
. I'll try to include some ideas when I'll rewrite this part for Shadowlands.
Dealing with water situations
Unless you play a druid, you'll be confronted to three problems with water: walking, swimming, breathing.
Moving
Two cases: above or under the water.
Moving above water can be dealt with
Flying (when possible)
Some class spells:
冰霜之路
,
漂浮术
and
水上行走
垂钓翁钓鱼筏
if you are revered with
垂钓翁
凌波微步
offered by some pets tameable by BM
猎人
Moving under (aka swimming) is complicated too, a few ways are listed on
this page
.
The easiest way so far might be to buy
波塞冬斯的缰绳
.
You might need some items in your bags for some quests:
Swim speed boost:
烁鳞潜水装
,
速游药水
Fast dive boost:
邪能页岩之锚
and its counterpart
魔石浮标
Breathing
This first issue could be dealt with through racial abilities but none of the best races has it. Warlocks can also cast
无尽呼吸
.
Only a few items linked
here
can help you permanently. The best one is
精致的卡鲁亚克鱼竿
, available after a 10-day grind in Northrend, capturing wolf cubs and helping seals mate.
Some consumables are available too (see
this list
)
德鲁伊
can deal with these two cases with their gorgeous and instant
旅行形态
.
has a special legendary which can be very useful to deal with water:
幽光鱼竿
. See the corresponding guide to learn how to get it. It includes (once correctly leveled) water-walking, underwater breathing and enhanced swimming speed. Lures needed to get the special fishes for the achievement and to level the pole can be bought on the AH.
Free fall items
Useful in caves, dungeons, raids and no-fly zone, you'll need a stack of
地精滑翔器工具包
in your bags (unless you learnt engineering or are a mage, a priest or a DH).
Transportation items
While
Traveling Around Azeroth: A Transportation Guide
is a reference, I'll select a few of those you might want to focus on.
See also the 'Transportation' section at the end of the guide.
We'll begin with the obvious:
炉石
you'll set on a hub. As of 8.3,
伯拉勒斯
/
达萨罗
is the best pick as it'll save you one hop to do current content, followed by your faction capital. It'll allow you to go almost anywhere with a few portal hops.
You'll want to keep
要塞炉石
and
达拉然炉石
somewhere handy too
You can enchant your bracers with
清凉炉石
if you chose enchanting as a profession
船长的指挥玺戒
/
指挥官的战斗玺戒
is a good second hearthstone.
肯瑞托戒指
gives a portal to
达拉然(诺森德)
for less than
The serie of cloaks you can see in this link will transport you to either
暴风城
or
奥格瑞玛
where you'll find the new portal rooms
飞行管理员的哨子
I've excluded many redundant items or very expensive ones, like the new Dalaran ring, the HS is cheaper.
Engineering will give you a few more portals (see one of the toy guides below) with 4 hours cooldown, useful when you have to grind a rep in
龙骨荒野
at 10 and you need to be in
昆莱山
at 11. As of 8.3 you can have a teleportation item to every continent.
I cannot insist more of the importance of being able to travel between continents without using flightmasters as some secrets or quests force you to travel. The portal room is a nice start, but any teleportation device you can use is faster.
Misc
Some quests will require you to damage a NPC without killing it. I recently tried to make a Northrend NPC talk (
赌债
) but at level 120, naked, in tanking spec, a single auto-attack killed him.
You must buy this awesome toy:
柔软的泡沫塑料剑
as soon as possible, it'll lower a low-level to NPC to a few HP.
If you cannot you'll have to use non-scalable damage items like
地精龙枪II型
to hurt a NPC without killing it. Once again,
工程学
is a good pick.
Another toy justifying being an engineer is
远程拾取器
, allowing you to remotely loot. Bind it to a key to loot everything in its range (at least 40 yds).
I often kill mobs at range (being a dk) spamming my Crucible and Death's caress.
Hunter have an alternative worth the :
宠物训练手册:拾回
, I strongly advise you to teach your pet to fetch if you chose to play a hunter.
Some quests need you to be invisible (well, you have to if you don't want to die in a single blow even in 8.1.5), so buy a stack of
隐形饮剂
or
德拉诺隐形药水
, whatever the cheapest.
There's at least one npc that needs to be dealt damage from a specific school,
维希度斯
and some classes don't have any spell dealing frost damage. If you cannot do it on your own and don't want to ask someone, see
布伦希尔达鱼叉
or
元素之力
. One of these will work for melee, if you cannot melee (like casters), invoke a pet or guardian, they'll melee.
If your play a non-engineer toon, you might want to take a look at
A Guide to Portable Bankers, Mailboxes, Vendors, and Repairs for the Non-Engineer
, as it offers some solutions for common problems.
Another idea, some caverns can be very dark, even with graphical parameter gamma set to high value, and physical screen brightness set to max, so you can use
一碗闪光的河豚
, clicking it gives various fishes that make you emit light. Use several of them to have a white glow around you.

What to do as a Wanderer ?
You might already know what would be the hidden purpose of your Wandering but here's a few organized ideas, with links. Keep in mind that these categories overlap each other a lot.
To maintain an easily readable guide, I kept a few guides out of the next sections.
You'll find them in the table at the bottom of the guide.
To track your progress and to plan your sessions you can (should) use these websites:
Simple Armory
has a nice view of your progress and your collections, it includes a nice calendar of to do things
Data For Azeroth
has leaderboards, trackers, collection lists with rarity
Wowhead quest tracker
to track quest progress. You generally should create a Wowhead profile for your char(s) as it'll allow you to see your completion in every Wowhead page, item, quest, achievement etc.
And the specialized ones I listed below.
Collections
One (if not the main) reason to Wander is collecting.
Amongst collectibles, you'll find mostly these three categories :
Mounts: often complicated to obtain, some quite rare mounts are available with a copious grind of a forgotten rep or by killing 1000s of mobs to get a 20th crystal.
Lord of the Reins: The Complete Mount Collecting Guide
and
The Littlest Mountain: A collector's overview of EVERY Mount and Pet in the game!
are a must-see while
this database (warcraftmounts)
is neat and
this mount planner
.
Pets: more common and far more numerous than 10 years ago, you can start with
The Littlest Mountain: A collector's overview of EVERY Mount and Pet in the game!
and
this DB
will present the 1100+ vanity pets.
Toys: a bit of fun won't hurt. As with mounts and pets, a lot of toys are to collect.
Toy Box Guide and Collection Tracking
and
Zone by Zone Toy Guide
will show you the (long) way.
Titles: Jenkins and the Patient are overused, find something original and classy here
The Entitled: A Guide to Titles
, and collect the most you can.
Tameable pets, if you chose to play a hunter. Not my specialty but I do remember guys with bow perusing
Petopia
.
Cosmetics
Since we can hide those ugly shoulder pieces (remember the troll dungeons from Cataclysm and the troll-themed pieces which were not really nice to the eye with a full set of T11 raid items), collecting older items to have a nice set for transmog has become an interesting activity.
As one guide is not enough,
https://www.wowhead.com/transmog
will provide you with a lot of data to find druid items with antlers and feathers or a templar-themed set for a paladin.
Another activity could be to collect Weapon Illusions to have a special glow. Start with
Collecting Weapon Illusions for Transmog
.
Quests
One of the nicest achievement (and one hell of a grind) with the according title would be to collect
博学者
, granting you this marvelous title: .
This achievement could take a bit of time (like a few dozens of hours) and has multiple sub-achievements.
Note that some interesting quest lines are not included in this achievement like the
Cthulhu-themed one in Stormsong Valley
. Quest trackers and planners mentioned elsewhere in this guide should be used.
Lore
Unlike what you did if you followed the previous topic, this time you could actually read the quests, immerse yourself in the immensity of Warcraft lore, characters and stories. There are plenty of minor characters to talk to, books to read in game etc.
You can check this
Youtube channel from Nobbel87
, which often writes articles with Wowhead. A few addons are interesting too (see below). You can also search for outdated guides with "books" or "reading" as keywords.
Reputations
They can be a mean to get rare stuff and an end by itself. Reputations could be really tedious but who doesn't like to be loved (or esteemed).
More than 100 reputations have been available since the beginning of the game, giving you nice rewards and a true sense of accomplishment. While
The Exalted: An Overview of all Reputations
is available as a truly complete starter guide, some of them will need their own guide.
Achievements
More than 3,000 achievements are available for a grand total of 33,585 points. Getting them can be a goal but they're rewards from actions as well as milestones of your journey in the game.
Some of them, very sought after grant rewards, like exclusive collectible.
Hidden quest lines and secrets
Another activity that might be a nice timesink is uncovering things generously buried in the game by our favorite game makers.
Quests, appearances, toys, mounts and fame.
This site (
WoW Secrets
) is quite famous, this
guide series
is a good start too.
Wowhead and its huge DB as well as its profiler allows you to see quests not yet completed.
Some of these secrets require a lot of travel between continents and some preparation.
Instances
A hundred dungeons are available as of 8.1.0. Have you completed them all?
Here's a
full list
.
To a max level player with decent gear (say level 120 with 370+), all instances in previous expansions are soloable, minus some rare encounters: Legion mythic raids and some encounters forcing the player to be in a 2+ player party. Amongst them, I can remember
紫罗兰监狱
in Legion if
鲜血公主萨安娜
pops. Some trash mobs will stun you as long as the trap has hit points.
Exploration
4 worlds, a dozen continents. It'll take time before knowing them all by heart.
Each of them have chests, rare spawns, hidden vendors, shrines and memorials.
Covering all expansions except for BfA, this guide (
The Explorer's Guide!
) is a good start.
This
serie
also covers a lot of ground by itself.
For memorials, you should take a look to the following guide:
A Guide to In-Game Memorials
.
Please note that some areas in the game can be explored using alternative strategies, for example you totally can get out of Nazjatar and visit the area surrounding the zone. But as it's a legally gray area, I won't give any advice on how to do this.
Professions and skills
考古学
can be a wonderful way to spend time on Azeroth, several rare items, mounts, toys and pets are available (provided you are a bit lucky and eager to grind), you can take a look at
this list
.
钓鱼
is doable on all continents. Lots of achievements, some mounts, some secrets and you can acquire some gold selling what you fished.
The perfect guide is
An Angler's Journey: The Extreme Angling Collection Guide
.
烹饪
has a lot of daily quests on several continents. A lot of recipes can be acquired through unusual ways and more than 300 hundred recipes can be gathered. See this
long list of recipes
. A few guides are available on wowhead but none that cover every expansion.
Other crafting professions
: while you visit, you can visit hidden vendors or farm for rare recipes. Please consult collection tracker tools and search for rare/hidden/secret vendors/recipes on the web. Some pets/recipes can be really rare, you may like to add it to your collection or sell it at the AH.
Gathering professions
: even if they don't provide useful perks to a Wanderer, you can leverage your travels by gathering mats from older expansions. If you did not choose to play a druid, you might want to get
飞天魔像
or the more rare
机械化木材采集器
to gather herb without dismounting (no mount provide this for skinning or mining).
Pet battles
Another activity where you'll have to take a long stroll. See
https://www.wowhead.com/battle-pet-guides#0+5+6
to get a lot of guides, this is a game in the game, with its own rules, theorycraft, strategies and tools.
Expansion content
I include in this category:
Tol Barad: more PvE quests and achievements available once your faction controls the zone. See
this article
.
Proving grounds: a way to test your character against enemy waves. See
this presentation
.
Scenarios: these 3-man instances can be done talking to a NPC (see at the bottom the three lorewalkers).
garrisons, tons of achievements and cosmetic rewards. See
this whole wowhead category
.
class halls, you can start here.
brawler's guild: a good way to play your char to its limit. See
Brawler's Guild Guide Battle for Azeroth (BFA) - Fight Strategies
.
warfronts and islands expeditons are excluded are they are not soloable (yet).
Holidays
Holidays are short events (from a day to several weeks), occuring at some time in the year.
There's a lot of achievements, pets, mounts and titles, and these events ask you to travel a lot.
See
this list of activities
to start and check your calendar.
Making gold
One of the perk of Wandering is the uniqueness of the gold making induced by your activities. While any AH addon will present to you the current price of your loot, here's a few tips:
Grey sell
: some expansions were prone to give a few to grey loots per quest
BoP green to orange stuff
: depending of whether you can disenchant or if vendor price is higher than mats, it's a load of money to make, while doing something else. I take an example, I do runs to get pets from raids. These runs work better in Heroic 25-man mode, so bosses loot something like 5 to 7 purples. Doing 5 raids was worth 6k.
BoE and recipes
: transmog is a thing and twinks still exist, some BoE sells for thousands and some recipes are quite rares
Pets
: a lot of them are rare, cageable and you might have twice the same.
Mats
: they were a really nice way to make gold when you had to level from 1 to 600 in a new professions to max it out but there are still some ways to make gold from older expansions mat, you'll have to aim for some specific mats needed in unique crafts like mounts, toys, pets, useful engineering contraptions and cooking recipes needed to obtain an achievement. Note that when revered with a faction in Legion, you can by
shoulder enchants
offering a chance to gather mats when killing some mobs
Quest and chest gold
: Simply turning quests in and opening up chests gives gold, as well as killing mobs, bosses and rare spawns
Garrison, class hall, daily and WQ
: gold is gold and either you're there or you already have a portal to the mission table
You won't necessarily be
雄壮商队雷龙的缰绳
-rich but you'll make quite enough gold to buy some shiny stuff.
How to Wander, a methodology essay
I kept on insisting on fast travel, in caves, in open world (fly and no-fly zones) and fast travel between continents. But why ?
A Wanderer might have a single objective in mind but actually, we are obliged to do a bit of multitasking on single game session.
As you might know, rares spawns have timers, sometimes quite long, WQ too and before Legion, some reputations can only be upped through a few number of daily quests and thus need a few days (or more). Also, instances have limitations from a day to a week, limiting the amount of grind you can do on a single topic per day.
So, on a single session you might :
Grind a rep in Northrend
Do your Legion WQ in Argus
Do a 254th run in Stratholme because who doesn't like a skeletal horse like
死亡军马的缰绳
?
Run a Firelands rush because of one the pets
And do a few more things but it's still 4 continents to wander into.
So you'll want to be able to go anywhere fast (even on a 4h cooldown) and locally be able to travel fast. Time is money.
For longer sessions, you won't always have available transportation cooldowns available, remember that
飞行管理员的哨子
is a recent addition to your toolkit. So, disenchanting is always a solution to keep some valuables in 4 30-slot bags. A single run in a mythic Pandaria raid could use 100 slots in your bags without any possibility to go back to capital and continue the raid.
So either you have the possibility to sell stuff or you need to disenchant it. For some stuff, you might want to mail it to your alt but a lot of items are BoP.
Don't forget to optimize your trips given the current state of your transport cooldowns. You can grind a rep, confront a master battle pet trainer, run a dungeon for an old mount and try to fish a specimen of a rare species on a single trip to Draenor.
So, plan your grand trip between continents !
Transportation
This is a major part of a good Wandering session, when you want to do several activities in a single time window. What you have to keep in mind is below.
Portals
BfA cities Dazar'Alor / Boralus portal room
Silithus
Thunderbluff / Ironforge
Silvermoon City / Exodar
Orgrimmar / Stormwind
Nazjatar
Dalaran (Broken Isles)
Wyrmrest Temple (Northrend)
Karazhan

Boats, trams and zeppelins
You should not have to use those but just in case, check
https://wow.gamepedia.com/Boat#Boat_ferry_routes
https://wow.gamepedia.com/Zeppelin#Zeppelin_routes
https://wow.gamepedia.com/Deeprun_Tram
Below you'll find another way to see this amount of data, as instead of giving ways of transportation, this is a table with destinations and means to go there.
I consider only items / spells that are still accessible, thus eliminating challenge mode TP, Karazhan legendary staff etc.
Pet dungons portals are accessible from Dalaran (BI) and Boralus / Dazar'Alor once you've completed the Pet Dungeon once. Some of them offer TP to zones more difficult to get to without.
I cannot insist on how much time we lose getting from one continent to another, more transportation possibilities mean less times spent on taxis or waiting for transportation cooldowns.

Configuration and addons
I'll give my fellow Wanderers a few tips:
Don't forget to display the low-level quests on the minimap
Set View Distance to the max possible value (you'll need to see where you are going)
Set Environment Detail to the maximum possible value
Do the same with Ground clutter
The most important parameter, Particles Density has to be set at High value to see correctly quest objects
Obviously, your computer has to be quite recent to allow every one of these parameters to have a maxed out value without slowing your display too much, but Wandering can be done using an older configuration as zones might have fewer players thus preventing lags.
Now, addons, they might be really useful but some players might feel they taint a bit the whole WoW experience.
I won't cover neither UI, nor professions, skills, social and instances addons.
I'll recommend the following addons (in addition to an addon displaying your coordinates):
World map and minimap enhancements
Wholly
displays every quest existing on your world map (minus the one already done).
HandyNotes
offers points of interest (chests, achievements locations, rare spawns, portals...) on the WM, this addon doesn't include data so you have to install submodules that are thematic. Among those interesting:
dungeon locations
. You'll have one for each xpac treasures, rares, achievements. Feel free to browse the long list on your favorite addon manager.
Quests
BtwQuests
for a graphical display of quest lines
LightHeaded
for ingame wowhead comments on quests
World Quest tab
for more efficient Legion & Bfa grinding
Lore
Storyline
has an highly immersive quest frame
Immersion
has enhanced gossip and quests frames.
BQL
is outdated (I've never tested it).
BTW Quests
show quest chains and dependencies
Bags and AH
Bagsync
tracks the items on all your characters, banks, guild banks, reagent banks, void storage and AH.
RECrystallize
show AH prices on tooltips to help you decide between sell/AH/disenchant.
Smexymats
gives information on an item tooltip to know the expansion and the profession relative to this item.
Faster Loot
for instant loot, no more box.
Addons made to automatically repair and sell greys are interesting but not specifically made for us.
Exploration
SilverDragon
is one of many rare spawn tracker.
Tomtom
is a GPS for Azeroth. I don't like it but it's widely spread amongst Wanderers.
Professions
Fishing Buddy
helps your tracking and counting your catches.
Minimal Archaeology
replaces Blizzard's default UI.
Collections
ALL THE THINGS
is the ultimate addon for collectors. Almost every collection is tracked, from transmog to recipes.
Rarity
to know how many times you failed to have luck for the rare drops.
Overachiever
can help you plan and warn you when there's one you haven't completed in the zone
Instance Achievement Tracker
checks the criteria for achievements in dungeons and raids
PetTracker
enhance your map and objective list with uncollected pets
Pet Journal Enhanced
greatly enhances Blizzard default UI for pets.
Toy Box Enhanced
and
Mount Journal Enhanced
have obvious purpose.

Patch history
In these bullet lists, I try to list new things or modified ones that are relevant to us as Wanderers.
8.2 Rise of Azshara
On the Wanderers side, patch 8.2 brought:
Flying in every BfA zones
Mount equipment, thus minoring strongly some races or classes usefulness
口袋计算装置
with some interesting blue punch cards
8.2.5
Nothing worth mentioning in this minor patch.
8.3 Visions of N'Zoth
Two new allied races, one of which with a good racial for us, a legendary cloak preventing us from using our favorite free glider.
Then we have 5 weeks of timewalking with +50% rep for the TW xpac.
What to expect about the next patch?
According to recent news, 8.3 was BfA last patch. Shadowlands is supposed to unprune specs and bring back class identity through common spells, available to every specs. I'm waiting to get my hands on the new Covenant feature, plus Soulbinds, as they'll give some abilities that may or may not be a must-have for us.
I'll have to update the class table as soon as the beta hits.
And, finally, a bit of advice to prepare for SL:
Prepare 4 characters, 120 with WQ gear. SL will have 4 covenants, so you'll need 1 char in each one to get all collectibles, as changing covenant will be an excruciating task
If you play a hunter, your stable will grow gigantically so no need to make room for all the new tameable
Get rid (disenchant/scrap) of the gear you kept "just in case" and mats that aren't use for crafts that'll sell in SL (mostly pets, mounts) to make room for new ones once 9.0 hits
Get rid of specific BfA currencies that won't be useful, buy things that are BoA or that can sell on the AH, like pets or BoE toys you can buy with
荣耀战团服役勋章
/
第七军团服役勋章
, the same with prismatic manapearls, residuum, echoes, coalescing visions...
If you're close to 1000 or 1500 pets, start grinding to buy extra room with
抛光的宠物符咒
:
破碎的宠物传送门
or
裂开的宠物传送门
If you plan to grind for allied races or flying permit in Draenor or Broken Isles, you can stop if you need time to do something else as the reputation prerequisites will be lifted
Don't hoard heirlooms or their upgrades, the XP bonus is removed, so we are waiting to see if the new promised bonuses are worth the cost

Awesome guide and a very welcome spirit into the game and playthrough to not being sucked into the “grind/skinner” wheel :)
I would like to add that between the Death Knight and Druid i’d say Druid is the better class because of his speed increases in cat form indoors, his 2 sitter mount from legion class hall, his prowl ability which is a stealth like rogues and dont forget his interaction ability while in forms! combine it with Night elf for the Aggro drop just incase and you have a utility master class (it is why he is my main).
To me it seems like a clear winner between those 2. Death knight seems Like an A type of class and the Druid is the only S when combining all these.
Great guide and thank you for it !

Finally! A guide that isn't catered to pvp or endgame players! I'm a seasoned, self-sufficient (altoholic), solo and two-woman (very rarely with my wife) player who has played since shortly after The Burning Crusade was released, and I find this guide to be extremely helpful.
Thank you so much!

Should survivability be a factor in the class list section? Solo survivability has been pretty important in my experience.

Hya! How are you?
Any plans to update this to Dragonflight? :) Just returning to the game myself after ~2 years.
This is the best (and only actually) guide for us solo players. It's actually so weird that WoW does not have a bigger community of solo players - for example ESO has loads and loads of guides for soloers ;o

On the off-chance that you still keep up with WoW - what do you think about Evoker as a wanderer?

Hello! Just following up...
Any plans on coming back to WoW in the near future and updating this guide? This guide is extremely unique and it's tough to find much information on such a great playstyle.
