Detailed purpose
As a Raid Leader (we'll say RL from now on) for my semi-casual guild, I need to have summarized information to prepare our raids.
This guide is a kind of pocket handbook, more fit for casual to semi-hardcore raid rosters. I'm pretty sure fully hardcore raid groups won't need this guide as they might know every class and spec but I only play one spec, and I won't particularly focus neither on Mythic Raid nor early weeks progress as the people running for the titles provide 95% of the data I use. Then again, this guide intends to connect a few strings between WoWHead (and other) guides in a convenient way.
What you might need to hear is that a lot of people are capable raiders but as non hardcore players they don't spend most of their evenings running simcrafts or watching FatBoss videos. So in most cases, you'll have to keep an eye on the toons in your roster, check specs, talents and so on, helping them choose an upgrade, an enchant or a talent tree.
We focus on the current tier, which is "8.2 Rise of Azshara" and its raid "The Eternal Palace".
This guide we'll be fully updated (or recreated) when a new raid tier comes up and contains tier-specific information and general information (updated to the current tier).

Eternal Palace raid content
Attunement and entrance
The current raid is located in
纳沙塔尔
, added in patch 8.2.
The entrance is located on the most northern point, in a pool below Azshara gigantic statue at coordinates

Name
No, you cannot drown as Azshara kindly gives us a underwater breath and speed buff.
The stone is located after the short automatic swim.
Yes you can PvP while waiting to summon.
Your mates must have completed the
Nazjatar quest line
to enter the pool, but they might be summoned using the stone or a friendly warlock.
A flightmaster is located near the entrance (beware, there's a few elites between the flightmaster and the pool), but you can fly on your own if unlocked.
Overview
There are 8 bosses in this raid, which is a quite linear instance except for the 2nd and 3rd boss you can fight in any order.
The raid is available in 4 modes :
LFR (Looking For Raid): 25 people using raid finder tool. Loot item level is
400+
NM (Normal Mode): 10-30 people.
415+
HM (Heroic Mode): 10-30 people.
430+
MM (Mythic Mode): 20 people.
445+
Loot
General loot rules of this xpac applies (warforge, titanforge, personnal loot) so
Every piece can:
Warforge, which is a +5 to +10 item level upgrade
Titanforge, from +15 item level to the cap (455 as of today) ilevel)
roll a tertiary stat: Indestructible, +Leech, +Speed, +Avoidance and/or a socket
Weapons CANNOT titanforge though.
Azerite gear (head, shoulders and chest) CANNOT have any modification (WF/TF socket or tertiary)
Specific items
Azerite gear is updated with a few new traits, notably
波动之潮
which tops the sims of almost every dps spec.
A piece of gear for every slot and for every spec can be found in the raid, as well as BiS trinkets for everyone (say hi to the Behemoth and Lady Ashvane).
Abyssal focus
This patch removed the crafting reagents found on raid boss corpses and allows the player to revive a forge, called the Abyssal Focus. This forge has three levels, and can be upgraded through a quest asking you to gather

You get only a few per wing on LFR difficulty and more per boss as the difficulty rises.
Essence
沧海圣匣
also drops, only 3 bosses drop them at the end of each of the three wings. These can be used to create a powerful Essence, especially useful for almost every dps spec.
Boss & wings
Reduce the boss list
1. Abyssal Commander Sivara
This a single boss single phase encounter with heavy movement.
Hard DPS check with an enrage timer at 6 min.
Simcraft type: Heavy movement.
Small room but a lot of movement for DPS and healers from one side to another and from the center to the edges. Melee players don't have a lot of space near the boss. Quite a lot of damage to heal. DPS must be high but it's feasible. This boss is quite hard for a first boss.
2. Blackwater Behemoth
A single boss, underwater encounter, 3 identical phases with important downtime in between and movement.
Soft DPS check with a quite original mechanism preventing healing.
Simcraft type: Helter Skelter.
The easiest boss as long the pufferfishs are killed properly, otherwise nuke and protect.
3. Radiance of Azshara
A repeating P1/P2 encounter, where you'll fight the boss during P1 and adds during P2. Tornadoes, dispels, and movement.
Not a DPS check at all, the enrage timer being somewhere around 10 min.
Simcraft type: Cleave add and/or heavy movement (depending on the strategy you use).
Beware the tornados, healers have a big role on dispell, a lot of movement but you can take it slowly. Quite easy.
4. Lady Ashvane
Single boss encounter with some movement. Repeating P1/P2, with P1 duration increasing and a fixed P2 duration during which the boss can be damaged.
Soft DPS check in HM as the floor is slowly occupied and hurting the people.
Simcraft type: between Patchwerk and Light Movement.
Movement can be minimized. Try to have only 2 P1 so you can ignore avery mechanic in the second P2 while you pop the BL. You'll need DPS capable of more than 25k DPS. This is a fight benefiting strongly from a larger group as the mechanic have a fixed number of targets (3 or 3 pairs). With higher DPS you can nuke the second P2 while ignoring completely the fight mechanics.
5. Orgozoa
SIngle boss encounter with add popping regularly. 2 almost identical phases.
Soft DPS check (pools on the floor).
Simcraft type: Hectic Add Cleave
If you have enough DPS and HPS you can ignore the adds in P2 (downstairs). This is the first boss where errors dealing with the tanking mechanics can be punishing. Almost no movement for ranged and healers. Have the ranged kill the adds and leave the melee on the boss.
6. The Queen's Court
Two boss encounter, with separate HP.
Enrage timer: 10 minutes.
Simcraft type: Cleave Add (two targets) for the ranged, I'd say heavy movement for the melee.
Multidot! Movement, and a lot of mechanics to deal with, specially when two of them occur at the same time. Have the ranged deal with the sparks.
7. Za'Qul
One boss, 4 phases, adds, portals ...
Enrage timer: 10 minutes.
Simcraft type: hard to say.
The next-to-last boss, some players will go off the charts on DPS while in the alternative realm (select wisely your best dps).
8. Queen Azshara
One boss, 4 phases, two intermissions, two mini bosses, heavy movement, nearly 30 abilities.
Enrage timer: 13 minutes.
Simcraft type: hard to say.
As most final boss are, it's a very complex fight with a lot to deal with. Work the phases and repeat.
The first three bosses constitute the wing called "The grand reception", the next three "The Depths of the Devoted" and the last two "The Circle of Stars".
Most of the trash packs have one or two abilities similar to the next boss you'll encounter. Pay attention.
Your group can swap boss #2 and #3, but the Behemoth is easier and won't take you that long.
Note you'll rez at the start of the wing.
A quick walk-through
If you don't know your way inside the instance, here it comes.
Reduce the maps and paths
The first floor you arrive on is called "The Dais of Eternity".
Proceed from 1 to 2, there's a few trash mob packs and two patrols. Nuke them and go to Sivara.
After killing here, take a few stairs, nuke some trash mobs and get into the water in 3.
On the following floor turn left and go pay a visit to the Behemoth.
Don't forget to have everybody click on the
富氧膜
and eat there because you won't be able to do it while in the water.

The Behemoth has its own floor:
You arrive from 1, the boss will be at start in 2. This 3-phase fight will lead you to 3 then 4.
After killing the fish, take a seahorse in 5 and go back to the previous floor.
The next floor (on which we just took a few steps on a few wipes earlier) has two bosses.
Your group arrives from 1 so turn left, nuke a few trash mobs, don't forget to kill the pack in 2 if you want to go see Lady Ashvane later, proceed to 3 and then you'll be able to go see Lady Ashvane.
After nuking this ugly lobster-looking woman, you'll fall in the following floor:
You arrive in 1, take the jump in 2, then 3 and in 4 you're on your way to the next boss.
From now one, things are quite linear.
The fight against Orgozoa starts in 1, ends in 2, then you exit from the Hatchery to the Queen's Court.

Your group comes from 1, proceed to the Queen's Court (you can hop on the room then kill the trash packs), then to Za'Qul, located in the next-to-last floor:

Killing za'Qul will allow you to try to defeat Queen Azshara.

I've chosen those 5 sites based on the quality of the guides as well as their accuracy, some have very schematic view (TankNotes and QE) but it may not convince everyone.

Creating a roster
Size
LFR won't be a problem as the game automatically create a 2/5/18 composition from random players.
Note: X/Y/Z always refer to number of // in that order.
MM is another problem we won't cover as each boss could require a very specific composition (at least before the nerfs).
So we'll focus on NM/HM which are similar.
As we said earlier, NM/HM allow the group to have from 10 to 30 players, and players can dynamically be added/removed at any time.
A quick note, boss HP increases linearly with the number of players. Boss abilities damages increase too and some abilities adjust dynamically (say 3 bolts for 10 players and 6 for 25). But some bosses have a FIXED number of players targeted (Lady Ashvane is a good example of a boss easier at 20 people than 10).
We'll advise to try to go with at least 15 people, so if you have 2 to 5 people unavailable said evening, you might be able to raid.
As of 8.2, with 415 to 425 gear, any spec is viable enough to down NM/HM content (again MM is another thing we won't cover). Blizzard wants these types of roster to follow the principle "bring a player not a spec".
Anyhow, some specs underperform but players can too. Note that 25k DPS with an average item level of 430 is not that much.
Please note that the following raid compositions are example, as 3 overly geared healers can do a better throughput than 5 under geared healers but they might have issue on some bosses with heavy needs for dispels. The same goes with damage dealers.
10 players : 2/2/6 is the only viable composition unless you have exceptional damage dealers
12 to 18 players : 2/3/7-13 to 2/4/6-12
19 to 24 players : 2/4/13-18 to 2/5/12-17
25+ players: 2/5/18-23
You shouldn't need more than 5 healers.
Also, please keep in mind that in a lot of fights there are unavoidable damages (like melee on tanks or some AOE) but pools, flames and cleaves CAN be avoided, relieving healers as you become better and better at a mastering a fight and your characters.
Every fight in this tier requires 2 tanks and none is considerably easier with more.
Last but not least, some fights will be easier with more melee dps and some with more ranged dps. In this tier, I'd say, ranged dps are a bit more favored than melee. Try to bring 2 ranged for 1 melee but I think every boss can be downed with a melee-only comp.
Gear and item level
This guide is a bit late, but if we were in July 2019, it won't be that difficult to achieve an item level of 405 before entering the Eternal Palace in Normal Mode. As of October 2019, an item level of 425 must have been obtained by anyone playing 3 evenings a week, and is more than enough to down HM.
As your healers and tanks get to an item level of 430 and some of your dps too, you can bring some new players to HM raids with item levels starting at 400-405 if they know a bit their spec.

Classes and specs overview
The goal of this section is to give a RL enough tools to ensure that every player is on the right path to the best of themselves (or at least the best of what they can do).
We'll summarize some of the data you'll need to provide to your mates and what you'll need to know about how specs works in this tier.
All of the advice below is single target oriented as it reflects better the Eternal Palace fights. Some fights may benefit from a few multi-target optimizations (Orgozoa, Court and Za'Qul) for some specs (Affliction and Shadow for example). For healers, players are not obliged to move that much in that raid, and no fight require to split the raid with a group out of range.
Gear
First of all, 4 benthic pieces must be used by EVERY dps and tank specs. These pieces must be 425 with the right damage affix and a socket. They compete easily with a BiS 455 piece as long as your are in the Eternal Palace. Except for progression, these pieces (hands excluded) are useless for healers.
Hands: Poen (send droplets)
Waist: Vim (physical damage AOE)
Wrist: pufferfish or frost damage
Feet: Akana's (+3% crit damage)
Weapons item level must be as high as possible, for almost every spec and totally mandatory for every melee spec (tanks included).
In a general fashion, disregard secondary stats or azerite traits if a piece of gear offers more than +10 item levels.
Rings are different as they won't provide primary stat. You must select the best secondaries, no matter the item level. Sockets are a must.
Trinkets are tricky too, notably for DPS. Almost every BiS trinket doesn't provide secondaries but a on-use or equip damage proc. Be careful and check BiS lists.
Consider items with sockets as if they had 5 to 10 more ilevel, specially when your new piece has bad secondaries.
Essences
Essence can be a huge DPS/HPS boost. Have your players grind for the required 3 at rank 3. This is easier for tanks and healers as they are obtained through reputation. The best DPS essence for almost every spec (
生命之凝力
) is harder to get as the components required to build it drops from raid bosses. While you grind the components, use

according to simulations and the type of content your players like to do.
世界血脉共鸣
is a theoretical BiS for a lot of DPS and tanking spec. It's easy to get (islands) and works very well as long as at least 4+ players use it near you and the strategy you use don't require too much movement.

can be used, according to the content they grind (PvP, MM ...). It's tricky to know when to use it or not and you might check logs to see the current uptime.
Filling the second minor essence slot can theoretically provide up to 2000 DPS/HPS so grinding for the second slot (obtained at HoA level 65) is important.
Consumables
Use max level enchants when required, although some specs require alternative enchants on weapons. Please not also that on certain case, specific enchantments might sim a bit better than the generic blue one (force/brilliance) but this is advanced optimization.
Use
“饿了没”点心桌
as food for the raid. No exception.
Use +360 PRI stat flasks for everyone. No stamina flask.
For pots, use

for crit-heavy specs,

else. Tanks and healers should use +1200 PRI stats pots (and pre-pots).
Ask dps and tanks to pre-pot (use a pot 1s before pulling) so a second pot can be used during BL or execute phase.
In the table below you'll find the list of gems and enchants to have at your roster member disposal, complete with +120 PRI gems, every +50 gem and +60 ring enchants.
Notes on tanks
Use dps gear as long as you are 425+ and/or have strong healers
Trinkets too but keep some tanking trinkets (

The three essences

are the mandatory 3 for all specs. You can swap between them depending on fights, requirements or your own playing style. These 3 are easy to get.
Grab a pair of trinkets with healing qualities like procs or on use effects dedicated to healing. They usually score better than generic trinkets with stats. If you don't have mana issues, avoid trinkets with mana-related effects and go for HPS increase.

Simming on Raidbots
There's only one way to be sure if an item is an upgrade or not. Simming.
Simming allows you to check a character and run simulations (swapping, gear, talents enchants) to get the most dps of a toon.

Cheatsheet
In the cheatsheet below, I'll present talents, weapon enchants and essences for every spec, along with a link to the Wowhead's guide. The data presented in it is adapted to the raid encounters, in single target configurations BUT, to gain a few extra percent of DPS/HPS, simming is the only option, and the Raid Leader might assign you another task requiring you to swap talents or essences, thus changing your traits and stats. If you have a doubt, consult detailed guides, specially with Eternel Palace optimizations (Wowhead, Icy Veins, class Discord servers, specialized websites or Twitch/YT channels).
Specs presented here are always the best performing, even if they require a specific Azerite trait (Survival, Affliction, Fury...).
This cheatsheet is for a RL to have details about other specs (not everyone plays the 36 available specs), consumables needed and to be able to take a quick look to the mates, checking they don't miss an enchant (or have a bad one, or an enchant instead of a rune), or if they use a MM+ template instead of a single-target oriented one.
Enchant the rings with the most important secondary except when specs need to have two stats close in amount.
Unless simulations tells you otherwise, gem a +120 PRI stat first then your secondary. At higher gear level, +120 may not be the best options on some specs (blood, frost and arms for example).

Addons and tools
We have, in 2019, a few tools at our disposal so let's use them.
Voice comm
You have some options available but almost every guild/website/clan uses Discord so give it a try. It's a powerful tool, capable of text and vocal comm, you can access different servers at once. Discord has also mobile clients (useful to warn when you cannot connect) and is accessible through a web client (when you're at work).
And it's free.
So if your guild is not yet equipped, download the client, create an account, then a server, a few text channels, a few vocal channels then start spamming invites to your mates.
The persistent text channels offered by Discord conveniently replace forums or Facebook pages for out of game communications, strategies discussions, absence notices, logs posting and so one.
You can also use WoW integrated voice tool but it's not as handy.
I insist on using this type of software as vocal communication while attempting a raid boss down is a key feature, it allows for quicker explanations before and permits announces (BL, tank swaps, brez and so on).
Logs
Logs are an optional feature of Wow. Its full name is "Advanced combat logging". While active, every damage, healing, move, buff, debuff, ability from your group/raid and your opponents while be fully stored on a file in your Wow installation directory.
Rough as it is, you'll need a few tools to get the best of this tremendous amount of data.
Warcraftlogs
Setting up logs is a great way to record anything that happen during a fight and allows the team to analyze it.
Warcraftlogs automatically compares and ranks DPS and HPS meters globally and inside ilevel brackets.

DBM pull
Log recording is manually started but /dbmpull creates a countdown then start the logs.
Please note that your healers will appreciate (pre-heal) and DPS can prepot at 1.
Analysis
Warcraftlogs does a great analysis but a few more websites exist with alternative analysis. Please check

. Note that you'll have to feed them a warcraftlogs URL to process.
Essential addons
Have your mates install at least:

Raid Leading basics
Preparing raid strategies
Unless you belong to a world class progress guild, you'll probably use one of the most popular strategy guide you'll adapt a bit to try then down a boss.
Not every guide you'll find online is worth reading, so I've selected 4 sites (sometimes it's worth seeing different POVs).
I start with two browser tabs, side-to-side, one with a video of the boss (I use FatbossTV) and the guide written by FatBoss on wowhead. Then I proceed to take notes on each fight with the following method:
General tanking advice
When to throw Heroism/Bloodlus
Phases with different abilities
A quickly drawn map with the main POI (boss, adds, pillars...)
I challenge my main strategy source with the other websites. At the beginning of a tier it might be really useful as strategies tend to adjust given time to keep the most widely known. Also, item level increase permits some simplifications (like zerging P2 in the Orgozoa fight to avoid dealing with adds).
Before each fight I describe the main phases with the important abilities and the key mechanisms players must address:
Positioning and moving
Phases and abilities
Dispels, healing CD and personal CD
Tank swap, interrupts
When to cast damage CD/lust
I try to set up a strategy considering our own playstyle (the less we move the better) and composition (more melee).
And as I'm French and our guild speaks French, I translate everything using the Encounter Journal in-game.
Invites and composing a roster
I send in-game invitations to guild members, usual pickups and friends. I expect them to reply with a truthful status.
Accepted = "I'll be there"
Incertain = "Not sure I will or can, don't count on me, I'll rejoin if I'm there and needed"
Absent = "Not there"
Sometimes I fill the empty slots with transnational pickups as long as they know the strategies, even if they don't speak french. Some bosses are very attractive to them (like Radiance or Ashvane) because of their BiS loot or craft tokens.
The raid
We raid during two hours plus a pause. A lot of guild raid 2 or 3 hours, as it match the duration of flasks.
We group 15 min before and stay inside the raid while we wait for everyone.
Before each boss I explain the strategy I want to use. I take into consideration the strategies my buddies or pick ups might have seen to adjuste for later trys.
I position markers (almost every boss), assign roles, create groups if needed (Radiance specifically), decide who'll pull, who'll dispell first, which fish we have to down and so on.
Then I check if everyone has eaten, is buffed and has a flask buff.
I issue a /readycheck to see if everyone's ready.
Finally /dbmpull to have a countdown before the assigned MT pulls, so healers can pre heal and dps/tanks can prepot.
During the fight, audio is reserved to tank swaps, soaks alerts, brez. This is not the time to saturate the channel, keep the fun discussions for trash packs.
After each wipe, we rez, eat, rebuff and debrief the try. It's not about who failed but what failed. Even if individual errors can lead to wipe (like tanking error during Orgozoa or the Court), this is a collective fight and we win or lose together.
After the raid, I congratulate everyone (always try to find the silver lining) and tell them what we gonna do next time, which boss we'll down, will we extend the raid lockout or not...
Then I post the logs on Discord for everyone to check.
A quick note on looting (if you are a returning player or a beginner in this role), since a few xpacs, loot is personnal, which means no master looting anymore (and no more fight and whining on loot). Everybody has the same chance of getting an item for the spec of his/her choosing. Items cannot be exchanged to another player if it's item level is higher than the one equipped. Boss can be coined too for a second chance at looting.
The only thing I do is announcing (/rw) the item someone doesn't want to get /rand from people interested in.
