How To Create A Battle For Azeroth
Speed Gear
Set
In Battle for Azeroth at Level 120, there are some great ways to increase your base speed.
As of 10/13/2020, my base speed is 224.941%
Base speed is your overall running speed, and does not include any temporary increases like food, potions, flasks, etc.
Whether you are running old content for transmog gear or achievement, doing gathering professions, or you just simply want to see just how fast you can be, this guide can help you get quicker. While this guide will have sections geared specifically towards hunters, most of the content will be beneficial for any class. You'll see guides out there about speed running certain dungeons or raids, but if you have 200%+ base speed, EVERY run becomes a speed run!
So let's go ahead and get started!
Script For Figuring Your Base Movement Speed
You'll need a way to track your speed as you go along making improvements. The following is an exceptional macro:
/script base = BASE_MOVEMENT_SPEED
/script cur, run, fly, swim = GetUnitSpeed("player")
/script ChatFrame1:AddMessage(string.format("Your current maximal speeds are: running %g%%, flying %g%%, swimming %g%%.", run/base*100, fly/base*100, swim/base*100))
I have this macroed and dropped right on my action bar so I can quickly click and see where I'm at in terms of my speed. It offers you current running, flying, and swim speed.
The Longstrider Trait (Azerite Gear)
You can grab a significant speed increase right away by ensuring your helm, shoulder, and chest Azerite Gear all have the
远行者
azerite trait.
This Azerite Trait does the following: "Increases your movement speed by 24% of your highest secondary rating, up to 7%"
For my hunter, my highest secondary rating is Critical Strike, so that is what the movement speed of the
远行者
trait will be based on for me.
I am currently using the following Azerite Gear items:
- 435 Helm
罪邪角斗士的链甲面罩
with
远行者
for an 3.52% speed increase.
- 435 Shoulders
压抑深渊护肩
with
远行者
for an 3.52% increase.
- 435 Chest
堕落妖术师法衣
with
远行者
for an 3.52% increase.
These 3 items worn together do in fact stack, the overall speed increase is 10.56%. This is with no other gear worn, because any gear with Critical Strike will increase the
远行者
effect.
With the rest of my gear worn, I have a total of 951 Critical Strike, at 23.21%. The formula to get the total speed for each Azerite Gear piece is as follows:
23.21% X .24 = 5.57%
Each of the three pieces of Azerite Gear listed above now gives me a 5.57% increase in speed, for a total of 16.71% increased speed.
For every 100 of your highest secondary rated stat you are able to add, you'll gain another 1% movement speed. This is incremental also, meaning if you add 10 of your secondary stat, you'll get 0.1% more speed, 50 more of that stat will be 0.5% movement speed.
So what's the easiest way to get gear with the
远行者
azerite trait? Buying Benthic gear will get you two of your three pieces immediately. The type of armor you wear will determine which two of the three pieces give you the
远行者
trait. (Thank you to user
alphabit
for that information)

These can be purchased for 5
棱彩法力珍珠
per piece of gear from
发现者普路克
(Horde)/
工匠奥卡塔
(Alliance), both located in
纳沙塔尔
, provided you have progressed far enough to unlock that zone, and have done a couple of quests there to get the currency needed. Benthic gear is also one of the rewards from doing world quests in Nazjatar, so you can potentially get an item that way.
Don't forget: Benthic gear is
account bound
, so if you can purchase the gear with one toon and send it to another on the same account, provided you do not open it.
An important thing to remember though, you'll have to have your
艾泽拉斯之心
leveled high enough to use the
远行者
skill on each piece of gear, so even if the gear is easy to get (Benthic), brand new 120 toons/alts will not be able to take advantage of this right away.
Once you get two pieces of Benthic Azerite Gear with
远行者
, if you don't already a third Azerite Gear item with
远行者
in your inventory or bank, don't fret! You can often times find that last Azerite piece that has it by using Blizzard's item restoration page. Don't worry so much about item level, if your intent is running old content, even the lower level gear is good enough for most older content. Plus, you can always keep searching for higher item-level items as you go.
Gear Items With Tertiary Speed
One of the key components to building a speed set is to collect as many pieces as you can that have the tertiary (minor) attribute "speed". You can build your speed up to 20% above normal (120% total) using gear pieces that have the speed attribute. Unfortunately with each "stat squish" that Blizzard does during the last few expansions, your set will also see the speed attribute drop significantly, meaning that it is important to try and get speed on current gear items.
Because the speed attribute caps out at 20%, once have reached that level, you don't have to worry about getting more items, or you can replace speed items with higher item level gear, provided you can switch out gear to keep your speed capped at 20%.
I currently have a speed set at 115.797%, or 15.797% above normal, with "speed" on 8 gear items. I am not capped out at 20%, due to the use of the due to the use of the three
远行者
items (and neck piece), and a few other gear items that actually increase your movement speed more than the tertiary "speed" itself does on that item. I will list those later.
The "speed" stat itself has been available for a couple of expansions now, and honestly the best way to collect them is to start right at the beginning of the expansion. It is very difficult to just go "build a speed set" using just items with tertiary speed on them, due to the low drop rate. I save every item that drops with speed on it and compare it to speed items I've already collected. If I don't have have an item with "speed" in that slot already, or the new item has more speed (higher item level) than a previous slot item, I keep the higher speed item.
Doing every world quest, along with a couple dungeons a day, you will likely get between 1-2 items a week with the "speed" stat. Hence the need to start early, you can't just build a set easily. It takes a lot of time and patience.
Each piece of the following Benthic gear has a chance to have tertiary stats, along with sockets:
底栖披风
底栖护腕
底栖护手
底栖腰带
底栖护腿
底栖便鞋
The
底栖头盔
,
底栖护肩
, and
底栖胸甲
do not ever have tertiary stats or sockets.
So if you are holding at a bunch of
棱彩法力珍珠
with nothing to spend it on, this is another route to try and get some gear with tertiary speed. More information about acquiring Benthic gear can be found in the
The Longstrider Trait (Azerite Gear)
section above.
While Benthic Gear can be upgraded, there is very little benefit to tertiary speed from those upgrades. See evidence of this below:
The first upgrade only raises your speed by 3, second upgrade another 2 speed. So unless you are trying to get a higher overall item level for your speed gear set, or you simply have nothing else to do with your
棱彩法力珍珠
, it is pretty hard to justify spending another 200
棱彩法力珍珠
on the 4 upgrades to get your Benthic Gear to level 425. Not for the small amount of tertiary speed you get out of it.
One other note to remember as you gear up: You may end up with gear that has a secondary stat rating that actually increases the effect of the
远行者
trait more than a same slot piece of gear that has tertiary speed. It is important to compare them.
Battle For Azerite Speed Gems
There are currently two gems available that you can use to increase your speed. These are:
-
跨界贤者玛瑙石
- 5% speed increase (thank you to user
lazarus923
who found this)
-
跨界绿铱石
- 3% speed increase
Obviously to use these items, you'll need to have a gear piece that has a socket. Ideally you'd want both "speed" and a socket, or an item like
鎏金之途长靴
with a socket, but if you have to choose an item with "speed" versus an item with a socket (and one of these gems), odds are the socketed item with one of the above gems will be your choice due to higher speed results.
And, to answer the obvious question, YES, THE 3% and 5% GEMS STACK (one of each)! With no diminishing returns. So there is an 8% increase in speed total.
If you don't have any socketed gear items you can use this in currently, check the auction house. I find the crafted rings are a good place to start, many of them have sockets. You'll also want to continue to stack your highest secondary stat to maximize the
远行者
benefit, if you have a choice between items.
Also, if you have
棱彩法力珍珠
to spend, Benthic Gear seems to have a good chance at having sockets. Again, see
The Longstrider Trait (Azerite Gear)
section above.
If you have extra socketed gear even after using the above gems, be sure and use whatever secondary stat gem works with
远行者
, for me that is the
致命熔岩青金石
.
Enchants That Increase Speed
I am currently using two older enchants that help increase speed.
The first is
初级速度
. I am currently getting a 10% increase using this on a set of item level 109 boots. A big shout out to user
Rezzak83
for letting me know about this one.
The second is the WoD Level 100 Cloak Enchant. There are four different versions:
附魔披风 - 爆击之赐
附魔披风 - 急速之赐
附魔披风 - 精通之赐
附魔披风 - 全能之赐
Buy whichever one is least expensive, because you are only really interested in the 2% movement speed from this enchant. Even if you select your best secondary stat to go with your
远行者
trait, you'll only get an increase of 5 to that stat, or a 0.05% increase to your speed. That is statistically insignificant in terms of the effect it has on your overall speed, compared to the 2% base increase that any of the enchants give you.
When I first used this enchant, I had a low level Warlords of Draenor (WoD) cloak, but getting an extra 2% movement speed was worth it. Thankfully, user
trifekta
pointed out that you can create a heirloom cloak on a low level character, enchant the cloak on that character, then mail it to your level 120. Obviously your best bet is to have that cloak upgraded to 4/4 (level 120). Currently I'm using the
黑暗男爵的世袭斗篷
, which at level 120, is item level 284, significantly better than a WoD cloak.
"But, aren't you sacrificing a lot of item levels in order to use these enchants?"
Yes, but remember, this set is mainly for running old content, and in those situations, the gear level is still sufficient to one shot most everything, or spend maybe five seconds downing raid bosses.
Also, don't forget that any addition to your secondary stat rating will increase the speed percentage effect of
远行者
. For me,
附魔戒指 - 爆击之符
on both my rings gave me 120 more Critical Strike. With
致命远航
added to my weapon, I was able to get 0.5% increased speed for each stack of Critical Strike. If you are able to get it to 5 stacks, you'll get 600 Critical Strike for 10 seconds (6% increased speed).
Other Speed Increasing Items
The azerite neck essence
空间涟漪
Rank 3 adds 5% movement speed.
One of the better items is the
瑞文戴尔之剑
, which adds 10% to your overall speed. Now you may ask, why would you want to use a melee weapon as a beast mastery hunter? Well, 10% is a huge increase, so I just put the sword and ranged weapon on my action bar and click to switch them. But if all I'm doing is old bosses, smacking them with this sword is good enough to do the trick. Thank you to user
Knewl
for suggesting this sword.
鎏金之途长靴
give a 30% buff for 6 seconds each time you loot gold from a kill. Much more useful against humanoid trash than creature trash, due to the gold loot requirement. There will be some dungeons this will be far beneficial than others based on human npcs versus other types (that don't have gold).
狼群之饥
is a speed trinket that increases speed by 30% for kills that offer experience or honor. This will not work with low level content (WoD and below), however this does work in Legion and BfA. I also killed a level 81 player in world PVP in Mount Hyjal and it proc'ed for me (I'm level 120). This trinket is certainly worth using for farming Legion content, and is still useful for some BfA content, provided your overall gear isn't too underpowered.
无眠部族披风
is a cloak that increases speed by 140 for 4 seconds, provided you have been standing still for 4 seconds. I found that, the easier the content, the less useful this cloak is. Your entire reason for having a speed set is to be moving non stop, as much as you can. Therefore most any dungeon/raid/world content that you can one shot with one ability makes this cloak useless because you will be moving constantly. Now, in raids/dungeons/world content where it takes you more than 4 seconds to down whatever you are fighting, this cloak has more potential. Just remember, if you are looting bosses, ranged classes are usually moving to get the loot, which starts the speed buff. You'll be looting, usually looking at the content, that can potentially take longer than 4 seconds and cancel out the benefit. Melee may have better luck.
You
can
use
生拌熊肉糜
to get a 5 second increase in speed after each kill. With a baseline of 100% speed,
生拌熊肉糜
has an 8.735% speed increase. This is with no tertiary speed gear worn. Unfortunately
生拌熊肉糜
has a significant diminishing return depending upon how much tertiary speed you are benefiting from. For instance, with my ~15% tertiary speed increase,
生拌熊肉糜
's effect is lowered to 2.345%. Still though every little bit counts, and it is worth using the
生拌熊肉糜
speed buff. All the other speed buffs listed above do not seem to affect this buff, only the tertiary speed percentage.
You'll need to compare the
生拌熊肉糜
buff to the additional movement speed you'll get from your best secondary stat food buff (provided you are using the
远行者
azerite trait.) For example, with 93 additional Critical Strike from
麦贡门的“机无霸”
, my speed was increased by 0.93%. This is a constant increase (as long as you have the food buff), versus the higher buff from
生拌熊肉糜
that lasts only 5 seconds. The best buff here will depend on your activity. If you are running through a dungeon/raid nearly constantly killing something, then
生拌熊肉糜
is likely your better alternative. If you are farming resources, or not killing enough to keep the 5 second buff up, you'll likely want to use the secondary stat food buff.
I tried to use the
水上漂
, but with my other speed enhancements, it actually lowered my overall speed compared to using BfA boots with tertiary speed. But more significant here: this does NOT stack with
附魔披风 - 爆击之赐
.
水上漂
used by itself, on a toon with the base level 100 speed, will buff you 10% (110% total). But once you start adding tertiary speed, the buff is drastically reduced, where as
附魔披风 - 爆击之赐
is an overall 2% buff to your speed regardless of tertiary speed stats. Besides, you already have
初级速度
that works and stacks with
附魔披风 - 爆击之赐
, and is not affected by tertiary speed.
For items that users at level 120 cannot benefit from, I avoided doing comparisons with those. This includes the obvious speed increasing legendaries like
警戒栖木
and
塞弗斯的秘密
, which will not work above level 115. However, that being said, if you are looking to increase your speed drastically in timewalking dungeons (where your level is scaled down to the dungeon level), the legendary items work very well, almost too well. Using the two above items, along with the rest of my speed set, I had a speed of 280%, but as a dps (especially a hunter), the tank wasn't able to keep up, and even a slight movement goes much further, aggro'ing packs of trash, and making one angry tank! Use with caution!
Hunter Class Specific Traits
Now we get to the hunter specific area. Selecting the
开拓者
talent gives a 30% speed increase "anytime you have not attacked for 3 seconds". An important note about this: notice this doesn't say "out of combat" meaning this speed is maintained even if someone attacks you (not counting snares/slows/stuns obviously). As long as you have not attacked, even if you aggro, or someone jumps you in pvp, this speed increase remains intact.
Then select a cunning pet to get the 8% speed increase
寻路
, and select talent
野兽守护
to increase the effect to a 12% speed increase.
A little side note, the
寻路
buff icon will show 8% even with
野兽守护
, but it is in fact 12%.
(As of 8.3 this has been corrected, the icon now shows 12%). I use a water strider in order to take advantage of the
凌波微步
exotic ability, this way you run across the top of water instead of having to slow down and swim.
Using
逃脱
with the
迅疾如风
talent will increase your speed by 50% when you disengage. That 50% is only as a portion of your 100% baseline speed, for 4 seconds after you land. Still an excellent speed buff.
Using
猎豹守护
increases speed by 90% for 3 seconds, followed by a 30% speed increase for 9 seconds.
迅疾如风
and
猎豹守护
do NOT stack, the speed buff will default to whatever is individually highest. The best way to use them for the longest sustained increase is to cast
逃脱
, then as it expires use
猎豹守护
, as it expires
逃脱
should be coming off cooldown, so you can use it again. This can allow you a speed boost for 20 seconds straight. Of course you can continue to use
逃脱
every 20 seconds after that on cooldown.
Results From Adding It All Together
So what are my personal results from using all of the above information?
For hunter class specific, I have and my cunning pet with its , that gets me to
142% base speed
(30% + 12%).
Then putting on
艾泽拉斯之心
with my azerite helm, shoulders, and chest, all with
远行者
, adds 10.56%, for a total of
152.56% base speed.
Selecting
空间涟漪
Rank 3 adds 5% speed for a total of
157.56% base speed
Upon wearing my socketed ring with the
跨界贤者玛瑙石
, my
base speed went to 164.44%
. This is an increase of 6.88% speed. This is due to the ring having 128 Critical Strike, and
附魔戒指 - 爆击之符
for a total of 188 Critical Strike, helping
远行者
increase speed by 1.88%
Next up, my socketed trinket with the
跨界绿铱石
, but also with +82 tertiary speed, for
171.032 base speed.
This is an increase of 6.592% speed.
Putting on my
黑暗男爵的世袭斗篷
with the
附魔披风 - 爆击之赐
, increased my speed 2.35%, for a
base speed of 173.382%.
Next up, I put on the other 7 items with tertiary speed (remember, my 8th tertiary speed item was the socket above), increasing speed by 17.435%, for
190.817% base speed.
6 of those items had Critical Strike, again helping
远行者
increase speed.
For boots, the choice is between the item level 109 boots with
初级速度
, or
鎏金之途长靴
. For purposes of 100% uptime on speed, I'll go with the 109 boots for now, raising my
base speed to 200.817%,
exactly a 10% increase.
Now, one of my speed items is my bow, which has +109 tertiary speed. Removing that brings my speed level down to 198.272%. Then wielding my
瑞文戴尔之剑
increases my speed by 10%, giving me a
base speed of
208.272%
(see below for update)
.
This is the highest base speed I've been able to achieve thus far.
Using
逃脱
with the talent
迅疾如风
increases my speed to 258.272% for 4 seconds upon landing.
Using
猎豹守护
increases speed by 90% for 3 seconds, for a total of 298.272%, followed by a 30% speed increase for 9 seconds, at 238.272%.
Replacing my
初级速度
boots with the
鎏金之途长靴
lowered my base speed to 198.992%, but upon looting any gold, increased my speed by 30% to 228.992% for 6 seconds. There were times I was able to keep that 30% speed buff up nearly all the time doing back to back kills in certain areas. Again, human NPCs are the best for using these boots, because they drop gold.
Replacing my tertiary speed trinket with the
狼群之饥
resulted in a minimal base speed reduction to 207.609%, and like above, when killing an enemy that yields experience or honor, raises the speed to 237.609% (30% increase). Again, this item if very limited in scope for where it is effective due to the "experience or honor" requirement.
Speed Updates
05/08/2020
- At this point, speed increases are incremental, and generally involve increases in the secondary stat that corresponds with the longstrider azerite trait. I've also made increases in longstrider gear item level that have raised the overall longstrider speed buff to 8% on two of my azerite pieces. My shoulders still have a maximum speed increase of 7%, this week however I should get a set of 465 from the PVP conquest crate that will have the 8%. I'll update when that happens.
As far as the relation of the secondary stat that works with longstrider, for me that is critical strike (as stated previously). There is a cap so I've gotten to the point where extra critical strike won't increase speed. This has allowed me to replace 3 items that either had no tertiary speed, or lower tertiary speed than other items i had with no critical strike on them.
These changes brought my base speed up to 216.243%
.
10/13/2020
- I should have probably updated this a couple of months ago, because I did have higher speed. But the changes were so incrementally small. I updated an azerite piece, moved around some gear items that had higher item level (higher tertiary speed), and ended up with 217.051%, only a 0.808% increase, less than 1%. No matter what I would do, higher item levels on other items, etc, with crit and apparently speed maxed out, I was stuck at that same 217.051% number. I believe it's been the same for about the last 90 days or so.
So my fastest base speed I was able to obtain in Battle For Azeroth was 217.051%.
Video Of A Dungeon Speed Run (Drak'Tharon Keep)
Miscellaneous
Once you reach 163% speed, you will notice that the animation of your character running changes. Instead of a quicker step/pace, your character will have a longer stride. Just an interesting bonus when you get to that point.
An unexpected issue as a hunter, you are constantly outrunning your pet. I just put him on my action bar so that I could keep summoning him. Not sure how the pets of other classes will behave. Tends to be a little aggravating but the speed is worth it.
Having nearly 210% base speed constantly can lead to some interesting player-versus-player (pvp) interactions. I was farming in Burning Steppes, and had a 120 warrior chase me for several minutes. Because my speed gear item level is 337, taking on a fully geared 400+ item level toon in pvp won't work out too well for me. But, due to my speed, I kept outrunning him. Later on he logged in on a same faction toon, and messaged me to inquire "How in the world were you able to continually outrun me like that?". I told him that it helps to have nearly mounted speed constant while on foot. That warrior has a speed set of his own now.
Please be sure to let me know in the comments about any questions or suggestions you have. I look forward to finding new ways to improve this guide!
If you've found this guide helpful, please scroll back up and vote, I will check this often and update accordingly.
Shadowlands Prepatch 9.0.1
10/13/2020
- Prepatch has occurred, the item level/character level "stat squish" has changed a few things. Until such time as the actual expansion drops, I'll continue to update here, because we are still technically in Battle For Azeroth, and because it appears that the items not only still work, but my overall base speed has gone up. For whatever reason, whether it be a lack of diminishing returns on tertiary speed items being used with azerite longstrider items, an imbalance with critical strike/longstrider, or just working as intended due to the stat squish, my speed set is currently faster than it was before the prepatch. Breaking everything down seems to indicate why.
I'm not going to spend a ton of time updating specific links to items here, you can find them above. Trailblazer is still the same at 30% (130% overall). Ripple In Space at 5% (135% overall). Pathfinding 8% (143% overall). Aspect of the Beast 4% (147% overall).
So up until now, not much of any change. Here's where things got interesting.
I added up all of the speed tertiary items, which amounted to every gear slot item having tertiary speed except head/shoulder/chest (azerite items), and cloak/boots (speed enchants). This gave me a 33.531% (180.531%) increase in speed, which is well above what I believed was the previous tertiary speed cap of 20%. I may have been incorrect about that 20%, because as I progressed through BfA and got better gear, I was likely around 25% tertiary speed and never realized it, due to never having gone through a comprehensive study on my gear until now. Obviously I can't go back in time as the same gear is a lower level, and is interacting differently with the other speed gear now.
I then removed the speed tertiary items and put on my head/shoulder/chest azerite longstrider pieces. This gave me a 25.165% (172.165%) boost in speed. This is with a 135 helm (30% of crit up to 9%), 120 shoulders (27% crit up to 8%), and 130 shoulders (27% crit up to 8%). Again, more about those formulas is located earlier in the article and that information still applies.
Now, the reason I put the tertiary speed items and the longstrider azerite items on separately and measured the speed is because I expected a diminishing return towards using them together. That being set, with both the speed and azerite items worn together, there was a total bump in speed of 58.696% (205.696%) which seems to be where the extra speed is coming from. There doesn't appear to be any reduction in the effect of the tertiary speed even with the use of other speed increasing items. I am not sure if this is working as intended, or an oversight by Blizzard, but I hope it remains this way for at least the rest of prepatch.
Adding the cloak with 2% speed enchant (207.696%)
Adding the boots with 10% speed enchant (217.696%)
In order to equip my 10% speed increase runeblade, I first had to remove my bow with tertiary speed. This resulting in a -2.755% speed drop (214.941%).
Equipping the runeblade increased speed by 10% (224.941%). So as stated, an overall increase of 7.89% speed over my previous highest base speed of 217.051%, with no changes other than the prepatch stat squish.
Current Base Speed Is Now 224.941%.
Oh, and another interesting find: I decided to check out Bear Tartare, because it was nerfed badly during BfA by diminishing returns. Not anymore. Using Bear Tartare I was able to get my speed to 236.487% after killing something, an 11.546% increase.
It remains to be seen as to whether or not Blizz will hit any of the above with the nerf hammer, but enjoy it for now. Shadowlands will certainly bring a lot of changes to this.
Oh, and to answer the question from below, yes, I'll put together a Shadowlands Speed Set Guide, however, it takes awhile to get everything put together once expansions start, so it may be a little bit. Keep checking!

(Hunters Only)
Per user
honeybees
comment, I tried out using one of the
萨斯多拉,风行者的遗产
appearances, and sure enough, anytime you are in Broken Isles (Legion content) and out of combat, just the appearance of the bow will grant you stacks of
疾风之行
, as long as you have the bow equipped.
You do not have to be in marksmanship spec for this to work, this also works in beast mastery, and oddly enough, also for survival hunters.
Because warriors can wield bows, I thought perhaps there was a chance a warrior might be able to get this buff. Unfortunately, the legion artifact appearances are only available for hunters.
While this is a limited application, because it only works in Broken Isles, and only when out of combat, the benefit is still pretty decent for activities that don't involve combat, like gathering professions for instance.
Testing this out, obviously I had to unwield the
瑞文戴尔之剑
, which dropped me from 224.941% to 217.696%. But once all 5 stacks of
疾风之行
applied, my speed went to 242.696%. So that's a 25% increase with no diminishing returns.
I can't say if this is working as intended, or an oversight by Blizzard, but as long as it works, may as well take advantage of it.

You did not mention

from the Opulence crown, it gives me about 5% speed if I can get the crown to proc it.

Excellent guide, I was just wondering if some kinda similar guide exists for flying/ground mount speeds?

I love this so much. I currently have a speed set at 176% and I run circles around most players. I got some extra tips from you that will help me up that speed, so thank you.

First, this is a great guide and I love it. Thank you so much for doing this. I'm enjoying the hell out of my +183 speed right now.
I'm having difficulty getting a mail pauldron with Longstrider on it. I can wait for the next PvP item to roll around (about 5 weeks), but I'm impatient. Is there any way to get a previous BFA season's items, (Dread, Notorious, or Sinister) now?
Otherwise, I'm waiting 5 weeks or farming the hell out of Uldir (G'huun), Eternal Palance (Ashvane), Darkshore, or Arathi. Unless I'm missing another source?
(Yes, I checked my Item Restoration, I didn't have any, sadly. :(

Thanks for this guide! I've been gathering speed sets since Legion, and it's really fun to zoom around.
Regarding the outrunning your pet, I use a Silithid pet as BM, and I've found their speed passive helps them keep up.
I also heard in some videos that the +5% speed gems DO NOT stack. I'll have to re-test this.
Can I also ask what boots you use? Why 109 ilvl instead of 136? Thanks again!

Excellent guide. I've been updating a speed set on my Zandalari Troll Feral Druid and so far have a normal unbuffed speed of 204.4% that goes up to 205.9 when
附魔武器 - 致命远航
kicks in. Still need the level 3
空间涟漪
for an extra 5% and waiting to get higher level azerite armour for improved
远行者
gains.
One thing you didn't mention but not sure if this is only on leather azerite armour but 2 of my pieces have
远行者
and also
正在赶来
Head and Shoulders with 49 and 44 speed each (don't think you can get it on a chest piece). Probably not a big difference with the diminishing returns but every bit helps :)

SO happy I stumbled onto your amazing guide. I had no idea BfA allowed for such speed. I currently have a 111 warrior twink that I use for farming old content, currently at 196% base speed. With the news that Shadowlands will be gutting Legion legendaries by making them legacy items, that character will no longer be a viable speed runner (I rely HEAVILY on
阿格拉玛的步伐
and its infinite scalability). Now I can spend the time between now and pre-patch working on a Hunter set! I will miss the Warrior, though. It was nice being able to acquire all weapon transmogs (except wands) in those old runs.
FYI: A lot of my post below is no longer applicable after Pre-Patch hit with a few surprises. Leaving my post up for now in case further tweaking occurs, but take a look at Dillybar's 9.0.1 update above for most up to date info
Shadowlands Beta Update
Here is an update as of 10/11/20. I've tried to clean up my post to be more concise, and all outdated info is now removed:
Azerite Armor:
The Longstrider trait on Azerite gear has been heavily nerfed to only give you a maximum 1% movement speed increase, regardless of the item level of your gear. There are better options in Shadowlands (see notes on socket gear below).
Old Items & Enchants:
Good news on this front. The
跨界绿铱石
and
跨界贤者玛瑙石
gems still work and will require Item Level 50+ gear in Shadowlands (basically anything from Legion endgame is level 50+ after the squish).
瑞文戴尔之剑
also still works, as do the 10% movement speed boot enchants. The boot enchant can go on items up to Item Level 50. The 2% Speed cloak enchants still work as well, but are outclassed by the new cloak enchant in Shadowlands that gives a flat 30 Speed stat (see my notes on scaling below, even at high amounts of Speed stat on gear, 30 Speed stat will give >2% movement speed).
Speed Stat Scaling:
My 120 Hunter currently has 652 Speed stat on its gear, providing a speed increase of 15.35% in BfA. This scales on the Beta to 99 Speed stat, and I am getting a speed increase of 21.99% My testing on a Beta level 51 character (why 51? see my plans for future below) shows the Speed stat starts out giving 0.3% increased speed per point, with diminishing returns kicking in almost immediately. 52 Speed gives 0.27% movement speed per point, 100 gives 0.21%, 200 gives 0.16%, and 300 gives 0.14%. These diminishing returns are mostly where we expected, but my testing also shows the Speed stat may hard cap out at giving a max 49% movement speed increase; will report back if/when I can get to that "cap" with gear alone. (This doesn't mean 49% is the overall movement speed increase cap, just what you can get from Speed stat on gear)
My Plan for Shadowlands
You probably have two options in Shadowlands: stay satisfied with your current speed set or acquire a socket set. As my notes above show, if you followed Dillybar's guide, you likely will be near where you started when the Pre-Patch hits (slightly less speedy due to the Longstrider nerfs, but not terribly so.) My personal plan is to level my character to 51 and acquire a socket gear set. Shadowlands introduces the new gem
跨界聚簇宝石
. The gem has an item level requirement of 87 and scales to player level, so you need to level up to 51 to get the full effect or it is only worth 4 speed per gem. You can craft or acquire many old expansion items with lots of sockets such as
魔能猎手胸甲
that are upgraded with
故往神器 V
(25-30+ sockets depending on if you are a Jewelcrafter or not). Do note this gem currently is either bugged or not working as you'd expect (it also is only giving 12 speed per gem, not 13 as the tooltip claims). Items with multiple sockets need to be equipped with gems of different stats to provide the speed effect (i.e. you can't just put three +16 Haste gems in your chest piece, you'd need to use one of each of Haste, Crit, Mastery, Versatility). With this gear, you can easily have 300 or more Speed tertiary stat, likely over two to three times what you'll have with current gear. Diminishing returns will come into play, but I am hoping to get to over 45% movement speed with just gems. As for Covenant choice for your speed gear alt, Night Fae has a very nice ability in
灵魂变形
. 50% speed on a 1.5 minute cooldown is very nice and works outside of Shadowlands.
One note on the feet gear slot. Your boots will be one piece of gear you don't want to craft at Item Level 87 because the 10% speed boot enchants cannot be placed on gear higher than Item Level 50. However, you can game this a bit. Legion speed gems require an Item Level of 50, so you can run Legion content until you get a pair of boots that are exactly Item Level 50 and roll a socket. Then you can avoid wasting one of your other sockets on a Legion gem. (All Legion "end game" content, from Normal dungeons to Mythic Antorus, reward Item Level 50 base gear in Shadowlands after the squish).
Can't wait for someone like Dillybar to get into the new expansion and find even better ways!

Have you ever found a pair of boots ilvl 136 / cloak ilvl 151 or under that has the speed stat on them ?
I'm wondering if there is a lower level cap on an item getting a tertiary stat added or is it just a much lower chance of seeing them on the auction house as they are from low level content now ? I'm assuming the heirloom cloak is probably going to be better unless hitting critical strike cap but boots could be a small boost. Even with both, at that level its only going to be around +25 speed in total so not much but in the quest for highest speed would make a difference :)

If you got Conflict and Strife as a major in your heart of azeroth then you get to choose a pvp talent as an ability you can use all over azeroth without needing to have pvp turned on. So as a paladin i got the Unbound Freedom pvp talent and as i said you can use it anywhere. This gives me a 30% speed boost for 8 seconds and the cooldown of the ability is 25 seconds (Blessing of Freedom).
For my warrior i got Barbarian as a pvp talent which gives me a double heoric leap every 30 seconds.
Thirst for Battle clears all your snares and gives you a 15% movement speed buff (warrior)
Death Sentence has a 15 yard range and now works as a Charge (warrior)
Enduring Rage increases the duration of Enrage for 1 second. Enrage gives you a 10% speed buff for 5 seconds then.

You could get the Windwalk enchant on your weapon for 10% movement speed proc, there is also the Rocket Boots Xtreme you can swap into these every 5 minutes for a massively fast speed boost, I hit about 455% with 1 longstrider trait and only 98 tertiary speed

Great guide; thank you! A couple of notable azerite trait bonuses are
Vampiric Speed
and
Shadow of Elune
. The former appears to be mutually exclusive with
远行者
, and the latter is a proc that only adds speed at night. Here's an
azerite speed trait list
.

As of 9.0 Death Knights have new Runeforging enchants available,
无尽渴求符文
gives a flat 5% move speed increase, with an additional 10% upon killing an enemy that gives exp or honor. Got this on
瑞文戴尔之剑
to finally have decent mobility on a DK

This is such a great guide, thank you! The high speed is very addictive, sucks when you have to take the set off. My hunter is at 207.8% with no buffs. Hopefully I can get him to ground mounted speed, if not faster.
Something that may be of interest - I have my BM hunter's weapon mogged as one of the Thas'dorah appearances, and I've noticed that it gives the Windrunner buff. Each stack gives +5% speed, stacking up to 5 times. It only works in the Broken Isles open world, and breaks on combat. Pretty limited use, but it's been nice to have as I farm Legion rep.

I'm sitting at 229% base speed because of your guide! By chance do you know the highest obtainable speed as I haven't found anyone higher but know it's possible.
Thanks again for the great guide and keep up the great work.

Thanks for the guide but I am confused. On the "Minor Speed" enchant tooltip it say that it does not stack with other passive speed increase effects. How can you stack all the enchants? Also whats changing in Shadowlands? Will the gems work in shadowlands gear? To be honest, even a 20-30% default speed increase will be enough for me :P

So it seems that the cloak enchantment doesnt work anymore, ive tried on the heirloom cloak(sending it to a lvl1 character), and a mythic HFC cloak (ilvl46). Is it because of ilvl or did it in fact stop working? Didnt try with boots but im expecting to be the same

As I have not yet gotten to creating a Shadowlands page yet, bad news for the speed set.
瑞文戴尔之剑
has been nerfed, and will now only work on level 49 or below. So unfortunately, even if you have a BFA toon that was using a speed set, at level 50 and above, you just lost 10% of that speed. Truly unfortunate, this is one of the best speed set items to ever exist in the game, for several expansions, and now it is done :(
They seem to have permanently nerfed it this time, and a worse nerf, you can't even use it on a lower level character and have it really matter. The anti-fun police at Blizz went after this one hard. It's trash now :( It makes no sense either, it isn't like you'll use this in current content, you'd get destroyed having this as your weapon during the current expansion, this was specific to legacy content, and in doing legacy content, what on earth is wrong with having a speed set?
What makes me sad is that the popularity of creating a speed set likely gave more attention to the sword, and several other items, leading to designers cranking up the nerf hammer. I feel a sense of responsibility :(

Hey, Love the guide, Just was curios why you didn't or why we don't use Dauntless gear from legion instead of Benthic gear as its much easier to farm with similar stats, also since its lower level more access to certain enchants and gems.

JUST POSTED, DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND
Shadowlands Speed Set Guide
Work in progress, I don't know much about the other covenants, aside from Night Fae, so if you have speed updates feel free to comment in the new guide. Look forward to pushing beyond 200% if we can get there.
