About the Author
This guide was written by Llarold! I’ve been tanking since Vanilla. During Mists of Pandaria, I saw an opportunity to begin writing guides, and I took it with the hopes of making myself a better tank and making the community into better tanks with me. I hope it’s working!

What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Buying Corruptions with Echoes of Ny'alotha for Arcane Mages
What Corruptions should I buy from MOTHER on an Arcane Mage?
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, we present a list of the best corruptions to purchase from MOTHER on an Arcane Mage.
Corruptions should only be purchased at maximum rank, unless you are struggling to meet a DPS check and a lower rank is available.
Even then, we don't advise ever buying a Rank 1 of any Corruption with three ranks.

Best Arcane Mage Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.
This chart is provided by Dorovon from the Altered Time community.
Best Effects
- This is the strongest effect for Arcane over long, single-target encounters.
- Although this can be hard to aim, it deals very good damage against single or multiple targets.
Good Effects
- A great cleave effect, but does require you to be in melee range, which makes it less desirable.
- A strong dot applied by your abilities.
- Slow and strong damage on a single target, as long as they stay in range.
- Our best stat proc.
- Another strong stat proc, about equal with Haste.
- Another strong stat proc, about equal with Mastery.
Bad Effects
- This effect is extremely bad for Arcane, since the spec has no regularly used rotational cooldowns.
- There isn’t really anything for this ability to be consistently used on, so it will rarely have value.

Best Arcane Mage Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar effect, you can always cleanse it. As an Arcane Mage, you can obtain weapons with the following effects:
always comes with
- This effect is extremely bad for Arcane, since the spec doesn’t have often used rotational cooldowns.
always comes with
- Very strong since most encounters you want to prioritize dealing damage to one target over a long period of time. This effect does cost a lot of corruption, so it can end up being detrimental if you have too many corrupted items on.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption

At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
- Mages can easily deal with this debuff by

if there is no other way to be safe from a mechanic.
- Mages can also use
to easily avoid this effect. The most important thing to think about with this effect is
usage. At low levels of corruption this circle is small enough to pivot out of and still be in your

to make it despawn. Keep in mind you can kite it, with

, you shouldn’t have to deal with this often.
How Much Corruption Should an Arcane Mage Take?
Since Arcane Mage has a lot of great tools to deal with all of the negative corruption effects, you are able to go to fairly high levels of corruption as long as you can manage your
charges and
well. Some raid encounters will be difficult enough to force you to take off corrupted items, just so you don’t risk dying and wiping your raid to a corruption effect. You should always stay below 80 Corruption on any content that is challenging so that you avoid receiving

Why is that in all the class guides here on wowhead, the informations about corruptions are quite contradictory?
At first, the author says the best corruption is gushing wound, then scrolled down and there is the infinite stars as the best corruption... anyone noticed this?

Also open top players on mythic+ and see that TWD is for tanks not for dps,i tried it on my arcane and its pure bs now im looking at top mages and they all gain crit over TWD i hate when theorycrafters and other ppl write false guides and we waste our time and echos for dumb corruptions when best ones are cheap and efficient.

Best single target corruption build is Severe III until 90~100% with Manifesto of Madness and Potion of Focused Resolve then stack StrikeThrough III to deal more crit damage.
