Welcome to Wowhead's Arcane Mage Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Arcane Mages in PvP, including defensive strategies, Crowd Control usage in PvP, and some common mistakes that Arcane Mages make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your utility will prove useful. We also cover ideal rotations for Arcane Mages in PvP. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much damage as you can (when it is possible to do so).

Important Cooldowns for Arcane Mages in PvP
Arcane Mage's consistent damage is not tied to cooldowns, however the rest of their toolkit (including burst) is heavily tied to their cooldowns and how they use them.
Offensive Cooldowns

- The main offensive burst cooldown for Arcane Mages. It has a 2 minute cooldown and is off the global cooldown but can be used fairly liberally, opponents will often feel forced to respect it. You want to use this only when the enemy healer is in Crowd Control and you know you will gain benefit. It is also important to make sure you only use Arcane Power when you are at 4 Arcane Charges as you want to piggyback this with instant cast Arcane Blasts due to

- A secondary offensive burst cooldown for Arcane Mages, you usually want to pair with either

. Be sure to have 4 Arcane Charges before using Arcane Blast, as the damage difference between charges is significant. 99% of the time you will want to be using this for burst, however it does have some niche use cases. It can be used as an instant way to kill a Shaman's

and follow-up with a

on the enemy healer. It has a 40 yard range and Arcane Blast hits the enemy instantly so in cases where you need to tag someone with urgency it can be of use.

- Our new 45 second cooldown cast introduced in Shadowlands that acts as our pseudo-engage burst. You cast this on the enemy and it gives you 4 Arcane Charges which sets you up nicely to use

and burst said enemy. You want to be using this off of cooldown if possible as it lines up nicely with consistent goes on the enemy team and allows for instant setup (on a short cast).
Defensive Cooldowns

- The iconic Mage immunity that allows your team to reset and regain its foothold in the arena, or used liberally to remove debuffs from yourself or escape Crowd Control. For an Arcane Mage, this is your single ability to fully negate damage and as such needs to be treated carefully. You do not have cauterize like Fire Mages or two of these to work with like the Frost Mage. Once you commit this cooldown to live you are going to be very vulnerable, so be careful using this aggressively. Ideally it will be your last line of defense after committing other defensive cooldowns.

- The ability that sets Arcane apart from the other Mage specializations because its Invisibility has a damage reduction component built in for 3 seconds after it breaks. The best way to use this is to combine your Gladiator's Medallion trinket (Crowd Control removal) and follow it up with

to try and negate as much damage as possible. If you know you are about to take a big hit such as a Chaos Bolt, using this ability to negate as much damage as possible from that hit is a very good idea.

- New to Shadowlands this will give you a decent 20% damage reduction cooldown for a brief amount of time (the images can only be destroyed every few seconds) and as such will be a good idea to use when you need some damage reduction but not something vital. If you are aware of incoming damage and will not need to be using anything more dire, this is a great time to use the ability.
Utility Cooldowns

- Making a return in Shadowlands is the iconic Alter Time, albeit the version from Warlords of Draenor. You activate it once and upon reactivation or expiry of the buff it will return you to the location and health value you were previously at. This ability has extensive uses but essentially you need to be extremely proactive. There are two main use cases, either character displacement or health restoration. In either case you want to use the ability early with the plan to reactivate to the location you were at, or the health value. Proper use of this ability can make or break your gameplay. It is important to note if it gets purged it will do nothing, and if you /cancelaura the buff it will also do nothing and act as if it was purged.

- This is useful for when your healer is in Crowd Control as you can stop further incoming Crowd Control, allowing your team to be healed back up; for example, you can use Mass Invisibility while your healer is in a blind so they cannot be sapped. You can also use this talent to cloak yourself and cast a Polymorph on an enemy player without them being able to stop you as long as you don't take damage and stay invisible.
Effective Strategies and Situational Rotations for Arcane Mages in PvP
Setting Up
Before the gates open, ensure you

You can open the match in a few different ways, especially depending on the composition that you are playing, but here is a general outline to follow if you aren't going to need

in the next two minutes. Start with

, then move to the enemy team with

on the enemy healer. From here, you can stun the DPS and use your burst cooldowns. Keep in mind since the enemy knows you are an Arcane Mage and have access to this spell they will be looking to prevent the Polymorph on themselves, such as a Discipline Priest trying to use
暗言术:灭
while you are invisible.
Note that casting will not break Mass Invisibility, so you won't be interrupted during your opener unless the invisibility breaks. Casting or taking any action with
强化隐形术
up will break it instantly.
Burst
Opening up is fairly simple as Arcane now, you want to cast

on the enemy of your choice (obtaining charges of clearcasting beforehand is ideal but not required, you can use

to help with this if you are Venthyr), at the end of the cast press your macro that uses

+any other damage modifiers like

three times. Afterwards, try to get as much damage in on the target while they are debuffed

. Beware of interrupts - cancel the cast immediately if incoming kicks are suspected. Use

on the kill target to end your burst with a bang. Use Arcane Missiles to follow up if your kill target is still not dead.

Dealing Damage
Outside of your burst the best way to deal effective damage is either cast
奥术冲击
at 4 Arcane Charges if you can ensure 0 stops/interrupts/line of sights, otherwise you essentially want to be pressing
奥术飞弹
. Weaving in
奥术弹幕
s in between these actions will keep your mana healthy, but is overall a damage loss. This is the majority of how you will be dealing damage outside of burst.
Crowd Control
Crowd control in the form of
变形术
is unique for Arcane because it is locked to your single casting school, meaning if you get locked out you will not be able to do any damage. However Arcane is also in the position of getting consistent
变形术
s on the enemy team due to its high mobility so it is very situational. If you are not the one on the team being targeted and you have free reign, you should be getting
变形术
s on Diminishing Returns on the enemy healer and any Damage dealers that need to be peeled. If the tables turn and you are scared to push off a pillar or are pushing into the enemy team, you have to be very careful about opening your Arcane school because it can be the difference between life and death.
Using Polymorph defensively to peel for your teammates is a crucial part of playing a Mage in PvP. Even if you get interrupted when trying this, it will mean that the opposing team has one less interrupt to use on your healer in an important moment.
Also note that like above, you can utilize

to cast a Polymorph without the chance of being kicked, however the invisibility will break if you take any damage. Ensure you are not affected by DoTs (Damage over Time effects) before using

.
Defensive
The access to extensive utility spells are what make Arcane Mages so defensively powerful in PvP despite their low HP and armor. It is important for you to keep track of whether your healer is in or out of Crowd Control. If your healer gets full

ed,

d, trapped, etc. this is your time to LoS (Line of Sight), kite, or create distance from the enemy through Blink or
闪光术
. Once your healer gets out of Crowd Control and is ready to heal you again, you should

back to them and get ready to go back to playing offensively.

s range means it can be used to move from the bottom of the map to the top on Blade’s Edge Arena, or from behind pillars back to the middle of the map on other maps.
In addition to correct positioning and Blinks/Alters, Arcane Mages also have

. Use Greater Invisibility like a

to reduce damage taken, assuming most of the time you will have a DoT or bleed on you to break the stealth of the spell. Mass Invisibility can essentially be used as an AoE

, dropping your enemy's target for a second and making you evasive. Personally, my favorite way to use Mass Invisibility is to use it on my healer when they are Crowd Controlled to make sure they don’t receive any follow up Crowd Control, meaning they can heal again straight afterwards. Ice Block is useful when you don’t have any Invisibility, kiting, or trinkets available and you need another way to stay alive.
Utilizing your PvP talents correctly depending on the match-up is also very important for Arcane,

is extremely valuable defensively against any match-up, whereas talents such as

are highly situational. Prismatic Cloak can be used in match-ups such as Destruction Warlock/Fire Mage, where they have large hitting spells. Dampened Magic is good in situations against DoT classes such as Affliction Warlocks or Shadow Priests so you will take less overall damage over time, as well as against Elemental Shamans to reduce the duration of their

can be used as an effective tool to get your major damage reduction cooldown shorter so that you can use it more often, which is very effective against Rogue/Mage teams and cleaves that can successfully train you.
Sustain/Downtime
Currently, sustain for Arcane Mages is a combination of

s to strip your opponents clean of any and all buffs, applying Nether Tempest if necessary, fake-casting

to bait enemy interrupts allowing for more future casting during burst windows, weaving 0 charged

to gain Arcane Charges to either cast Blast

s, however I rarely do this.
Common Mistakes Arcane Mages Make
The number one mistake I see Arcane Mages making is trying to cast too much while kiting/landing Crowd Control and as a result get put in compromising positions, whether it be their position on the map or them getting locked out on Arcane. As an Arcane Mage you have so much mobility that if you are kiting and playing defensively, the only thing you want to do is rotate

while running away, or towards the enemy if you are looking to land some Crowd Control and it doesn't result in you being in a bad position. Another large mistake people often make is casting

too often. This is probably because in PvE, Arcane Blast is your primary damage dealing ability. In PvP however, this leaves you too vulnerable to kicks, rendering your entire spec useless. Arcane Blast should be used in unison with
气定神闲
, to bait kicks, or under rare circumstances, to build charges when enemies are too far away to
魔爆术
. If you are extremely comfortable with the specialization and know you are not going to get locked out, lined, or otherwise stopped, it can be efficient fast damage to spam cast
奥术冲击
at 4 charges only because you can get many of them out quickly, assuming you have a decent amount of Haste and can afford the mana cost.
Always chain your Polymorphs. A huge mistake I see is when a Mage will get a full
变形术
onto a healer, let it break, then the healer heals up the kill target and five seconds later (while the kill target is at full health) the healer goes into a half Polymorph. The issue with this is that the diminishing returns (DR) of your Polymorph has been wasted and you won't be able to reset for another 18 seconds. Similarly, if you leave any kind of gap in between your Polymorphs, classes such as Paladins and Monks will take advantage of that gap to get major healing cooldowns off, stopping all pressure you may have. It is much more important to chain the Polymorphs than leave gaps even if it means overlapping a bit of duration. To track your diminishing returns so that you know when your Polymorph will be full again, I recommend downloading a DR tracker or the Gladius/SArena addon.
Casting
魔爆术
is 90% of the time a bad idea and very ineffective. It has a high mana cost, does extremely low damage, has a lower radius than Legion, and barely contributes to doing increased damage. Another very large mistake I see Arcane Mages making is pressing Arcane Explosion very often, whether trying to do damage while kiting or using it just to use it. The only time I recommend using Arcane Explosion is if you are trying to build up to 4 charges quickly for 4 powered Arcane Blasts, or if you are truly trying to AoE a team down and they are properly stacked.
Countering Other Classes
A Holy Paladin's
神恩术
can be spellstolen, even though the icon for Divine Favor does not light up (normally spellstealable icons glow). Once you
法术吸取
their Divine Favor, Paladins are susceptible to being interrupted. Holy Paladins also have
牺牲祝福
which transfers the damage the enemy takes onto the Paladin. Holy Paladins will attempt to apply Blessing of Sacrifice to their partner before they get Polymorphed to break the effect. Fake casting the Polymorph to bait out a Blessing of Sacrifice can be highly beneficial.
Restoration Druids can be semi-countered by using
窃法成瘾
against them. With Crowd Control on the Restoration Druid, you can use

to steal the target's entire line of HoTs (Heal over Time effects) and burst the enemy who no longer has them. If you are playing with a class that has a Mortal Strike effect and high uptime, a semi-effective strategy against Restoration Druids is to consistently spam
法术吸取
and force them to either Crowd Control you, or put a HoT (Heal over time effect) on their teammate every global. This strategy can be countered by pressing Lifebloom every global and being more mana efficient than you, so be careful of only doing this while fighting Restoration Druids. Another important note about Restoration Druids is that often you will find yourself in the position of having to Polymorph the Druid without any form of prior Crowd Control, which means catching them out of form. It is a very difficult thing to learn and takes a lot of time, but knowing when Druids will be coming out of form because their teammate is in dire need of heals is something you can take advantage of with Polymorph. It can also be a viable strategy to just spam cast Polymorph on the Druid if the target has no HoTs and your team is contributing enough damage, force them to stay in form with very few answers.
Discipline Priests will normally try to counter a Mage's Polymorphs by using
暗言术:灭
to break out of them. Fake cast the

to trick the Priest into using their Death on nothing, and then Polymorph them.
Abilities that reflect spells (such as a Warlock's
虚空守卫
) are something to watch out for when trying to burst a target down, or when attempting to Polymorph them. Depending on the awareness of your target you might want to treat them like a Discipline Priest, treat Spell Reflection as Shadow Word: Death and don't sheep them unless it is on cool-down.
A Death Knight's
黑暗模拟
ability is dangerous for a Mage because it is able to steal your Polymorphs. Polymorph is the primary ability that the enemy Death Knight will aim to steal. If you know they have Dark Simulacrum off cool-down, it is a good idea to start casting

to bait the Dark Simulacrum, use

or
虚空风暴
(to give them an Arcane Explosion/Nether Tempest instead), then continue to Polymorph.
Other Mages will try to set up the same way as you during their kill windows. This means they are going to attempt to Crowd Control your healer then burst you down. To counter this, save your trinket to
法术吸取
the enemy Mage when they are going for a setup (assuming you are stunned or Crowd controlled during this setup). Your trinket is also extremely valuable in Mage vs. Mage match-ups to stop 'goes' with a Trinket->
法术反制
on the enemy Mage.
