Bolvar Fordragon is a veteran human paladin, once in charge of the Alliance forces in Northrend battling the Scourge invasion. He is the father of Taelia Fordragon.
After a series of events around the Battle of the Wrathgate and Icecrown Citadel, he decided to succeed Arthas Menethil as the current Lich King.
Early Life
Not much is known about Bolvar’s early course of life. Many speculate that he once served as a member of the Knights of the Silver Hand, not last because of his close relationship to one of its founding members, Highlord Tirion Fordring.
From his daughter
Taelia
it is known that Bolvar served as a knight in Stormwind.
Rumors say that, before his period of service in the capital of the Alliance, he could have served as a footman in Lordaeron, which makes him a perfect fit as
Calia Menethil’s
lost husband. That again matches with Taelia Fordragon’s story about her lost mother, making her the daughter of Arthas Menethil’s sister.
Taelia Fordragon Gossip
I grew up hearing tales of the great kingdom of Lordaeron. And tales of its fall.
The Scourge took my mother, my father, and my homeland before I was even old enough to understand.
World of Warcraft
Most players first met Bolvar Fordragon when he was in his military prime. During Vanilla WoW, he resides in Stormwind Keep as Regent Lord of Stormwind. He acts as a substitute for Varian Wrynn, who has been gone missing, and keeps sight over his son,
Prince Anduin Wrynn
.
Thanks to the compelling quest chain called
The Missing Diplomat
, which told the story of a mysterious diplomat who got lost during his investigations, we know that the diplomat is in fact Varian Wrynn, who had been captured by the Defias in cooperation with another powerful villain. The quest chain stops with Jaina thanking the player for their investigation in the matter.
Later on, players find out that the Blackrock orcs have been controlled by the mighty black dragonflight.
After slaying numerous black dragons in the Burning Steppes
, the leader of Lakeshire,
Magistrate Solomon
, urges the player to reach out to Bolvar Fordragon to spread the news about the unknown power of the black dragonflight. Today we know that this marks the beginning of the
attunement quest for Onyxia’s Lair
.
After informing Bolvar himself, he forwards the player to a noble called
Katrana Prestor
, who has the following to say about the black dragonflight situation:
The True Master: Dialogue with Katrana Prestor
<Lady Prestor glares at you.>
Pardon the intrusion, Lady Prestor, but Highlord Bolvar suggested that I seek your advice.
I was standing right next to you, imbecile. I know what you seek.
My apologies, Lady Prestor.
You seek to lower our global defenses in order to appease a paranoid magistrate and an encampment of riff-raff that are probably suffering from heat stroke.
Begging your pardon, Lady Prestor. That was not my intent.
Of course not, dear boy. You 'adventurer' types are often victims of circumstance; subject to the political drama which tends to unfold between citizenry and royalty.
My advice to you, then, is to seek out something else, more specifically: A new career. This world has enough heroes.
Thank you for your time, Lady Prestor.
Over the following few quests, Bolvar sends you back to Magistrate Solomon, who then begs you to further investigate the happenings within the Blackrock. That then includes
a rescue mission for Marshal Windsor
, who dug up important information about the Blackrock and the involvement of the dark iron dwarves and the black dragonflight.
As it turns out, Katrana Prestor is in fact
Onyxia
, daughter of Deathwing himself. And not only that: She has been controlling Bolvar Fordragon through a mysterious amulet ever since!
After the player manages to destroy the amulet and break Onyxia’s spell, Bolvar is finally himself again. He has also been able to remember some of Onyxia’s vision while being under her control. Bolvar sends you to a blue dragon named
Haleh in Winterspring
to restore the power of the
amulet
which would eventually give access to Onyxia’s Lair.
In the end it is Bolvar Fordragon himself
who receives the Head of Onyxia
after you slain the broodmother in Dustwallow Marsh.
Besides the widely known Onyxia quest chain, Bolvar plays a supporting role
in the storyline and rise of Nathanos Blightcaller
, once the only human ranger lord and now loyal servant of the
Banshee Queen Sylvanas Windrunner
.
The Burning Crusade and the World of Warcraft Comic
In the Burning Crusade, players were being lead to Bolvar during the leveling process. By the looks of it, players wanted to know more about the backstory of the royal family and Bolvar’s history that was told in Vanilla WoW.
A now deprecated quest called Warn Bolvar!, which had been introduced with Patch 2.3, helped telling the story of Onyxia’s schemes within Stormwind and the absence of Varian Wrynn that caused Bolvar to become Regent of Stormwind.
In the World of Warcraft Comic, another story around Varian and Bolvar plays out: After the sudden return of King Varian he looks to behave a lot differently. Even his son Anduin notices, and that is why Bolvar looks to investigate the weird and overly joyous behavior of his king.
And that is where the storyline takes yet another turn: Marshal Windsor - the spy that we saved from the Blackrock jail in Vanilla WoW but is saved by Varian in the comic - returns to Stormwind with a soldier called Lo’Gosh, who suffered heavy memory loss and happens to look exactly like King Varian.
Windsor unveils that Katrana Windsor is Onyxia, and that triggers a fight with in the keep of Stormwind. Bolvar - who is not controlled by any amulet in the comics - and his knights are able to defend the royal halls, but notice that Prince Anduin has been taken by Onyxia and her dragonspawns.
Lo’Gosh and King Varian, who turn out to be one person split by Onyxia’s dark magic while Varian has been abducted, march towards Onyxia’s Lair to free Anduin. In the end they succeed, and Varian becomes one again, although never the same as before.
Wrath of the Lich King
During the absence of King Varian and Prince Anduin, Southshore and Goldshire are being attacked by the Scourge, led by the Lich King himself.
What follows can be described as the main Alliance storyline in WoW’s Wrath of the Lich King expansion.
Alliance players help Bolvar and the 7th Legion to bring down Thel’zan the Duskbringer
, a lich mage who helped the Lich King bring Naxxramas to the Dragonblight.
The Alliance continues to drive back the Scourge to Icecrown Citadel
, and together with
the Horde and Dranosh Saurfang
- leader of the most elite Horde soldiers called the Kor’kron Vanguard -, Bolvar
plans to end the war on Northrend at Angrathar the Wrathgate
.
What follows did go down as one of the most felicitous cutscenes in the history of World of Warcraft. To give you the full-on experience, the linked video
contains a remastered version of the original cinematic, created by IKedit
.
As the Forsaken enter the battle, the Lich King retreats and Bolvar seems to be left for dead. Alexstrasza and the red dragonflight try to safe what is left and drive off the remaining Forsaken.
The players continue the war against the Lich King and advance into Icecrown Citadel. As it turns out, Bolvar has been captured and tortured by the Scourge, but he seemed to resist the will of corrupted Arthas.
In the final battle of Icecrown Citadel, adventurers fight and eventually defeat the Lich King. After his son died, Terenas Menethil’s ghost appears and tells the adventurers accompanied by Tirion Fordring, that a Scourge without a leader would result in pure chaos, and that is why there must always be a Lich King.
Right when Tirion wanted to sacrifice himself and put on the Helm of Domination, Bolvar Fordragon, freed from his Scourge chains and scarred from the scarred by the life-giving flames of the red dragonflight, asks Tirion to leave him the burden of the Helm of Domination.
So in the end it is Bolvar himself who succeeds Arthas Menethil as the next Lich King, wanting to keep control over the Scourge. What happened in Icecrown Citadel has been a secret ever since, and to the majority of people on Azeroth, the Lich King died, and Bolvar Fordragon died with him.
Legion
In Legion, Bolvar, now known as the Lich King, is involved in two storylines around artifact weapons.
First there is there Fire Mage artifact weapon called
Felo’melorn
. Forged by the most powerful night elves, this sacred blade had been wielded by generations of Sunstriders, including
Kael’thas
in the battle against the Lich King.
Some time later, a blood elf named
Lyandra Sunstrider
decided to search for Felo’melorn in the Icecrown Citadel, only to be slain and resurrected as a member of the Scourge. Ultimately, Mage players travel to the Icecrown Citadel and retake the sword after they have defeated the undead Lyandra once again - all with the Lich King watching.
Bolvar, being the Lich King himself, of course has say in the acquisition of all Death Knight artifact weapons. For example, Bolvar lets Death Knight players collect shards of Frostmourne to forge the
Blades of the Fallen Prince
out of them.
This shows that Bolvar chooses the Death Knight players as his familiars within the Ebon Blade during the Legion expansion. Besides that,
he recreates the circle of the Four Horsemen
, once the four most powerful commanders of the Scourge, created by Kel’Thuzad. He even tries to resurrect the fallen Tirion Fordring to lead the Four Horsemen, but his minions fail the mission.
With Patch 7.2 and the updated Death Knight campaign, Death Knight players communicate with the Lich King once more. To receive their class mount, Death Knights have to go through a quest line where Bolvar shows them
memories from long ago
. They involve a “price” that Arthas sought but never found: the long-forgotten remains of a red dragon named Kyranastrasz. Bolvar wants the Death Knight player to
corrupt its ever-living life force and turn it into pure undeath
. An interesting detail lies within the statement of Bolvar, that should the Death Knight die trying during this mission, he would take lead of Acherus and not seek revenge like Arthas did:
The Lost Glacier: Lich King Dialogue
The Lich King says: It is here... I can feel it. Your supplies have likely frozen. I sense feral undead buried in the ice. It seems the time has come to test your will.
The Lich King says: Of course, should you fail to survive, know that I shall claim Acherus for my own. Arthas may have sought revenge on the citadel, but I have... other plans.
Eventually, the Death Knight player succeeds and revives the dragon and thus receives the
Class Campaign mount
.
Battle for Azeroth
In Battle for Azeroth, the Lich King gets confronted by the late Vol’jin and his companions about the vision that once persuaded the troll leader to name Sylvanas as the new Warchief of the Horde.
The player learns that Bolvar was not the voice behind Vol’jin’s vision. He does, however, know for a fact that Sylvanas disturbs the balance between life and death:
Looking at the Jailor of the Damned quest, we now know that it massively foreshadowed the upcoming Shadowlands expansion. Not only did Bolvar, the Lich King, see a disturbance in both life and death; Bwonsamdi as well suspected that somebody much more powerful has been involved in recent happenings:
The Jailor of the Damned: Bwonsamdi Dialogue
I be havin' many rivals when it comes to claimin' souls. But it takes some serious mojo to do to Vol'jin what ya describe. Dat kind of power smells of old magic. Icecrown. It be more dan a pretty throne. It be an anchor dat holds dis world to da next, ya might say. I gonna open a death gate, and ya can go through and ask da Lich King if he be treadin' on Ol' Bwonsamdi's ground.
Battle for Azeroth also introduced Bolvar’s daughter Taelia Fordragon as a story character. And while Anduin seems to really care about her - most likely because he knows what happened to her father -,
he doesn’t want to tell Taelia the truth about Bolvar’s fate
.
Besides spoiling the upcoming expansion,
Bolvar will also work together closely with the Ebon Blade in Patch 8.3
, just like he did during the Legion Death Knight campaign.
Shadowlands
After her defeat at Orgrimmar, Sylvanas Windrunner regrouped and then journeyed to Icecrown. There she fought Bolvar, showing that her power had grown immensly.
Sylvanas is able to chain Bolvar and removes the Helm of Domination from his head. After a short pause for thought, she tears it apart, tearing open the veil between the living and the dead and opening the way into the Shadowlands.
Dark Abduction picks up right where the Shadowlands preface leaves off, with Nazgrim and Whitemane helping Bolvar to Acherus: The Ebon Hold.
Bolvar seems to know what Sylvanas' plan is, as he predicts her abduction of Thrall, Anduin, Jaina, and Baine. Once he has recovered he helps the heroes of Azeroth enter the Shadowlands to rescue the abductees, and sends his Lieutenant, Lord Darion Mograine along with the Knights of the Ebon blade.
Bolvar is currently in Oribos directing the rescue of the abductees from the Maw.
