About the Author
This guide was written by Llarold! I’ve been tanking since Vanilla. During Mists of Pandaria, I saw an opportunity to begin writing guides, and I took it with the hopes of making myself a better tank and making the community into better tanks with me. I hope it’s working!
I am active in all of the tank class Discords but primarily contribute to theorycrafting discussions in
Peak of Serenity
and
Skyhold
(Monk and Warrior). I’m active on
Twitter
, where I mostly talk WoW (and basketball), and I’m half of the team responsible for the YouTube channel
WoW at Night
, which focuses primarily on tank guides and previews.
Brewmaster Monk Raid Strengths
- Someone in the raid has to bring it. Why not the tank?
- Laugh at the burst damage that kills other tanks! Laugh! Hahaha!
- Being able to maintain 100% uptime on your active mitigation is a very nice advantage that makes a class significantly more resilient and versatile. Brewmasters can maintain
at 100% uptime with absolutely zero difficulty.
Mobility - When a tank really needs to move around a room quickly, a Brewmaster is virtually always the best class for the job.
- Related to their own amazing mobility, Monks can give bosses amazing mobility, too! This can greatly increase DPS uptime when tanking bosses that have to be moved around a great deal, and it can make moving bosses for mechanics significantly less difficult.
- Brewmasters make up for how much damage they take by being really, really good at receiving heals.
for wipe recovery - While generally not at the top of any class utility lists, the ability to save time on wipes by resetting a boss can make progression much more efficient. For encounters in which you don't need to use
to move quickly, setting a spirit outside the arena so that you can quickly taunt and reset the boss when a wipe is called will save your raid group a lot of time and repair bills.
Brewmaster Monk Raid Weaknesses
Defensive Cooldowns -
is the only cooldown you need, which is good, because you don’t have a ton of other options as a Brewmaster Monk.
Damage output - Brewmasters are one of the weakest damage-dealing tanks. They are competent in single-target - just average, but not bad. In AoE, especially burst AoE, their lack of offensive cooldowns is a noticeable shortcoming. A skilled Brewmaster should expect to do less than half the damage of an equally-capable Protection Warrior in large-scale, short-term AoE. Over the course of a longer fight, a good Monk can be a little more competitive in AoE, but it's still not great.
Small health pool - Brewmasters have the smallest health pool of any tank. While they compensate for this with enormous Effective Health (a calculation of health + mitigation) against physical damage due to Stagger, it does mean that they don’t scale as well as other tanks on beneficial effects that are based on health pool size. Also, because Stagger is significantly weaker against spell damage, Brewmaster’s small health pools leave them extremely vulnerable against sustained spell damage.
Self-healing - Brewmaster self-healing options are as follows:
,
. That’s it. The whole list is two things, and one is a talent. It’s not a lot. Make sure your healers feel appreciated.
Eternal Palace Bosses and Tips

Mythic: There isn't a huge mechanical difference between Mythic and Heroic difficulties in this fight for tanks. Be mindful of your stacks and your damage intake.

Mythic: Adds spawn much more frequently, and
will be crucial for helping to pick them up as they stream into the arena. They should still be killed and soaked in mostly the same way, but will require much more DPS coordination than in Normal and Heroic difficulties.
Mythic: Many guilds opt to 3-tank Mythic Orgozoa, and for those that do, Brewmasters are a good choice for full-time add tank. During the first phase of the fight, it's a fairly simple process of keeping the adds in range of the boss so that they aren't empowered, but can still be cleaved by melee and Fire Mage Ignites. Monks are good at this. While Monks can't deal the kind of DPS a Warrior can, the DPS is consistent, and Monks are probably the best tank at staying alive while tanking the full army of adds downstairs during phase 2, which is arguably the sketchiest part of the fight.
Mythic: If you are tanking the boss, then your job will simply be to live through taunt-swaps (the hardest hitting-part of the fight for the non-add tank, for sure!) and soak
, since the add tank will not be able to due to never gaining
stacks!

is a dangerous buff, and preventing them from gaining it is of utmost importance!
When tanking Aethanel during phase 1, be mindful of when she casts

.

.

to avoid being obliterated! Transcendence and Roll/Chi Torpedo are very helpful here!
Mythic: Azshara adds three major mechanics to the fight in Mythic difficulty.
can allow her to issue up to 3 decrees at a time, rather than 2 in lower difficulties. Tough, but fair.
causes an instant-death laser to split the room in half, and in later phases of the fight, it rotates while active. Mecha-yikes.
Mythic: Third, and deserving of its own bullet point, is
, which causes
to continue dealing major damage and stacking even after you have taunt-swapped Queen Azshara. As a result, you will have to break line of sight from her for 14 seconds in order to facilitate a successful tank swap.
Mythic: Here's some good news to go with the bad! Queen Azshara casts Arcane Missiles every 3 seconds - exactly every 3 seconds, which means that once you've broken line of sight from her, you can quickly dart back in and out of line of sight every 3 seconds to continue applying DPS without letting the debuff keep stacking - basically you can cast two skills, then hide, cast two skills, then hide, until the debuff has dropped off. Just be sure not to screw up and get another stack!
Notable Eternal Palace Gear
Azshara's Eternal Palace is a full raid tier, with many new items to acquire in every slot, several of which also have special effects that may influence your gearing or gameplay as discussed below. Make sure to visit the
Brewmaster Monk Gear Guide
for the full Best in Slot list including Azerite.
Eternal Palace Defensive Trinkets
The Eternal Palace has three defensive trinket options available to Brewmaster Monks:
provides a significant amount of healing over time. Effectively, this trinket heals you for 10% of all damage taken as long as you don’t die or reach the cap (which is high, but reachable in normal tanking situations). Even once you reach the cap, this trinket provides a pretty steady chunk of healing over time, giving it excellent appeal for defensively-minded tanks. Even better, it doesn't discriminate between magic and physical damage, unlike some other trinkets...
provides the ability to absorb ever-increasing amounts of physical or magic damage. It can be swapped, but since doing so resets the ramp-up, that’s probably not ever going to be a good idea mid-combat. In addition, since all Stagger damage is physical - that’s right, it’s all physical, you know that now - leaving this set to physical at all times is not a bad idea. As it currently stands, this trinket has to stack up several times before it is an absorb upgrade over
, even at 30+ item levels higher. It's a much less appealing design as well, due to needing to be completely absorbed each time and not scaling with Haste. As long as you are consistently depleting the entire absorb shield, it's a major upgrade, but also a minor disappointment. On a positive note, you can use both of them together if you're trying to ultra-defensive.
grants you a major defensive cooldown at the expense of another player in your raid’s health. With good coordination and a prepared party member, this can be a pretty strong defensive option, but there is a significant risk involved. Also, this in no way reduces the total damage taken by the group, which is weird! Your healers still have to do the same amount of healing, just split across two targets. Not a great defensive trinket!
The two best defensive trinkets for Brewmaster Monks from The Eternal Palace are
and
, without question.
Eternal Palace Offensive Trinkets
The Eternal Palace also has five offensive trinket options for Brewmaster Monks, and they are somewhat more interesting:
is an on-use damage proc that can be used again to grant Critical Strike chance. This trinket is a little weird, but it is extremely strong. It is an exceptional option for dealing damage, especially for encounters such as Radiance of Azshara or Za'qul that have highly telegraphed add or increased damage taken phases. Being able to switch from a steady trickle of extra single target DPS into a massive Crit buff is very, very nice. As a damage proc that converts to a valuable secondary stat, this trinket offers the best of both worlds! If a target with stacks of the debuff dies, you will immediately gain the Crit buff they would have provided - without having to use the trinket a second time! This can be valuable for generating stacks on short-lived adds!
is a weird,
good
trinket. It repeatedly stacks a debuff on an enemy until they hit 30% health. At that point, all of the stacks explode, dealing a significant chunk of burst damage. Then the trinket does nothing until the enemy dies. This may seem more like a PvP trinket than a PvE trinket, but it is an excellent option for increasing your single-target damage. It's good, it's just a little weird! This trinket's damage proc can Crit, so if you are able to force a Crit (for example, by popping a huge stack of
), you can dramatically improve its damage value!
grants a small AoE damage proc. It can be a decent DPS option in large-scale AoE. It is exceptional in situations in which you can ramp it up on a single target, then maximize its damage in an AoE pack, and as a result it sims incredibly well in Hectic Add Cleave situations. Unfortunately, staying out of melee range of all but one enemy in a group is much easier said than done as a tank.
provides a decent chunk of Haste for a brief period of time. This trinket provides a mediocre amount of a not-all-that-great stat. You can use it on low-health adds to greatly increase its value, but even at its best it's not very good. Nope.
is a massive, mind-blowing amount of Agility. Having to channel for up to 4 seconds while in combat is risky and bizarre. The potential to use this trinket for maximum burst damage is interesting - but probably not worth the effort any normal scenario.
The ideal trinkets from The Eternal Palace for a Brewmaster Monk looking to be the best damage-dealer they can possibly be is
and
. They are really good. Nicely-titanforged Mythic+ trinkets such as
and
can also be reasonably competitive.
with
is also a tremendous source of single target DPS that way outperforms its item level. It is the best single-target DPS trinket in the game right now!
Notable Non-Trinket Gear
The Eternal Palace has a few other odd items that deserve further inspection.
is a well-itemized weapon with a peculiar on-use effect. It has roughly half the secondary stat budget (losing ~152 secondary stat at 445 item level) but grants a damage proc with a proc rate of 3 RPPM. The damage proc has a unique interaction with the debuff caused by the Intellect DPS trinket
. Since you have no control over when this weapon’s proc will occur, there’s really no reason to track the trinket debuff or attempt to coordinate with your casters. This weapon’s proc will deal well over 1000 DPS at 445 item level, potentially even adding a lot more in AoE if you have casters using
in the group. It’s extremely good!
adds a small amount of damage every 2 minutes. It’s not much, but it’s free damage! Unfortunately, it overlaps with a valuable Benthic armor slot, and it's not competitive with Benthic gear.
grants you and your nearby allies a small Critical Strike buff every 2 minutes. Again, it’s not much, but it’s free. Free is a good price for buffs. Again, this piece overlaps with a more powerful Benthic armor option.
causes you and another player to passively grant each other a very small trickle of healing from your own health pool, depending on which of you is more wounded. It’s not a big deal, but the ring’s stats are okay and again, it’s free.
Notable Benthic Gear
Benthic items are upgradeable pieces from your faction's Nazjatar reputation. While they cannot be upgraded past 425 item level, some of these pieces have damage procs that can outperform Mythic raid level gear (seriously, some of this gear is worth 460+ item level!) within The Eternal Palace. Here are the key pieces:
Bracers:
- Top-tier damage option.
Gloves:
- Another exceptional DPS option. Truly outstanding.
Belt:
- The damage proc is good in AoE, but less valuable than Bracers or Gloves.
Belt 2:
- A superior DPS increase against Orgozoa and Za'qul.
Boots:
- Top-tier damage option.
Focus on Bracers, Gloves, then Boots, and finish up with the Belt. There's not really a lot else to be said about any of these pieces. They deal extra damage, which is great! It's not much more complicated than that.
Raid Tools and Analyzing Your Performance
There are many ways to getting better at raiding, and while understanding the encounter and your specialization's role within it is one of the most important ones, being able to review your performance will help you better understand what is happening, what went right, and what went wrong.
Logging is a powerful tool which allows you to make a record of everything that happened during an encounter.
WarcraftLogs
uses that record to create analytical charts detailing the positioning, damage dealt and taken, who had which buffs and debuffs, even a full real-time replay of the entire encounter. Check out our full
WarcraftLogs Guide
to see what the number one raiding resource can do for you.
WoWAnalyzer
is more personal. It uses the same WarcraftLogs report to create a detailed analysis of a single player's performance, with less emphasis on what happened during the encounter and more tailored to improving that specific player's rotation, cooldown use, survivability, and role (tanking, healing, damage dealing). Give our
WoWAnalyzer Guide
a read, and find out how it can help you improve.
Deadly Boss Mods
and
BigWigs
are all-important encounter addons, with customizable alerts, countdowns, and timers to help you preempt and react to important encounter mechanics. Find out more with our

Additionally, there are many Addons, WeakAuras, and other tools which can help you improve your gameplay, focus on important encounter mechanics, or just simplify your UI to make it easier to see what's happening during an encounter. All this and more can be found on our Brewmaster Monk
