Welcome to Wowhead's Discipline Priest Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2.7! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Discipline Priests in PvP, and some common mistakes that Discipline Priests make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your utility will prove useful. We also cover ideal healing rotations for Discipline Priests in PvP. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much healing as you can (when it is possible to do so).

Effective Strategies for Discipline Priests in PvP
Positioning and Global Management
Our
心灵尖啸
is a really good cooldown and if we can use it on the enemy healer after our teammates' CC, it will put the other healer in a long CC chain where they won't be able to heal and they will be in a lot of trouble. Making this happen is really hard though since most of the teams have slows and the only mobility Discipline Priest has is

being just 40% sprint (back in the day it was 70%). This means that either we have to ask our teammates for a freedom like

, or it will be better to use our

in 3rd target to avoid any peel or healing and stick to the pillar defensively while we do damage and help our team to keep offensive - sometimes playing aggressively makes us lose the game. We also have to consider that if we play with a Mage,

and if we play with a Feral,

will too. Sometimes it's better to stay close to a pillar far away from our teammates and deal the most damage we can while we heal with Atonement and focus on managing our mana rather than going for a

that makes us lose the pressure. Of course, in the perfect scenario and where our composition allows us to, we can push and play aggressively.
Atonement and Outhealing Rot Pressure
The

passive is one of the main reasons Discipline Priest is so strong. Since

(PvP Talent) no longer increases

damage to healing transfer by 20% and the Crit chance of Smite, Penance and Shadowfiend has been increased to 30% (it was 25%) we will have to probably use

which is another interesting option since we will have

that will reduce our healing spells mana by 15% and that had always been our weakness, and also
心灵之影
will increase our spell damage and healing through

by 10%. We will have a 6 sec CD to change between them and so important is a buff that can't be dispelled.
Survivability
With the

buff back to 30% damage reduction we will have less problems with surviving, especially against melee teams running us down, but still we will have the talents that will make us even more tanky in case we need them.

make or break your survivability against double melee compositions. There’s generally no escape from two melees once they’ve connected on you and at that point, the best thing to do is to maximize your tankiness by keeping your

active. It’s very effective to keep kiting the two melees around the edges of a pillar, however keep in mind that while it’s key to your survival to line of sight the melees from their healer - it’s extremely important you don’t line of sight your own teammates if they’re capable of peeling though.

allows you to create distance between yourself and the melees, and if used appropriately (around the corner of a pillar or to knock someone off a platform, for example) it can buy you massive amounts of time if paired with peels.
Other things that will definitely help out with your survivability are the trinkets. PvP trinkets are currently the best since they got a huge important buff with a bonus that will make the damage and healing benefit of Versatility increased by 40% when in Arenas, Battlegrounds, and War Mode.
Common Mistakes Discipline Priests Make
A common Discipline Priest mistake with
救赎
is healing or dealing damage without having
救赎
active on your teammates. Also make sure your
救赎
s are active on your teammates before you cast
黑暗天使长
, as otherwise they will not receive the damage buff.
Fake-Casting and Lockouts
Juking interrupts has always been rewarded, however for Discipline you can essentially fake yourself to death whilst trying to juke interrupts when you can just tank a kick on one school and cast with the other. Getting kicked on
while at high health isn’t so bad as you’ll be able to response with plenty of Holy spells anyway, such as

,

,

, and

. Keep in mind that while getting kicked on Holy might not always seem so bad since you can spam cast
s afterwards, it's recommended that if you are high HP you are getting locked in Shadow and if you are low HP you are getting locked in Holy. This is because
will help you to top your health if you can spam it when you are low HP, and if you are high HP you need to avoid getting Holy locked because being locked on Holy means you’re incapable of using any defensive cooldowns. If you’re going to tank kicks on Holy, do so with extreme caution.
Getting locked out on Holy during
全神贯注
is something you’ll want to avoid at all costs. It’s often not even worth it to cast any spells on the Holy school at all if there’s potential for you to be interrupted on it.
Avoid being kicked on
if you’re waiting on top of the enemy healer to chain your crowd control, as it’ll lock you out on Shadow and cause you to be unable to follow up with a

. This can completely ruin a set-up and often leads to you being CCed instead, which can force defensives from your team or even lose you the game.
Rapture

is a reactive cooldown that doesn’t shine when outhealing burst. Casting

when your teammates are at low health is a coin flip that you’ll generally want to avoid. It’s better to use
全神贯注
to keep your teammates' health up high while avoiding CC to make sure they’re not low health already by the time you get crowd controlled, imminently forcing your team to answer with defensives. Don't forget the buff that
全神贯注
got and we mentioned and it's that now when we use it in the same global it will shield automatically to our target so we won't have to waste 2 globals like in the past.
Common Mana Drains
When dealing with high pressure situations in arena, whether they’re aggressive or defensive, you can find yourself caring less about your mana pool and more about your collective objective to score a kill or stay alive. Spam usage of abilities such as

will easily drain your mana.
That's why it's important we try to heal most of the time through

because it will mean that we are healing with our damage spells and they are the most mana efficient spells to heal through, but of course that will be an ideal scenario and we have to know that we will have to deal with healing reductions from enemies, kicks, CC, etc. Additionally we need to use the previously mentioned spells to allow our team to secure a kill with a

on a Paladin or Mage at low HP removing their immunity, using

against Druids, Priests during Rapture, Mages during Alter Time, etc.
Incorrectly 'Mindgaming'
Of course it’s all situational, but generally you do not want to waste too much time trying to

. This is a mind game the Hunter should never lose as they can technically wait endlessly for you to cast a global while their team damages your party, and as soon as you’re forced to heal your teammate you’ll end up in a full

while they’re still high health increases their chances of outliving the duration you’re in CC.

works for us to master its fullest potential. Here are some factors for you to consider when deciding on gear, trinkets, and talents.

Mechanics that reduce damage taken (such as

) do not reduce our healing output through

will heal through

Damage trinkets, racial abilities do not heal through

While we generate healing through dealing damage, the way it’s calculated is not as simple. For instance, things that increase our damage and healing (such as Versatility) will not double dip. This is because only the healing portion of such buffs will modify

.
Tricks and Tips
Using

on a Death Knight's

can prevent a lot of incoming damage. We can also CC the DK's while

While playing against classes with spammable CC or even instant CC, holding your global to get a

. Playing against highly skilled opponents being aware of when they want to CC you means you will need to be holding your globals, as they’ll be watching them closely and they’ll easily punish you for letting your guard down.

are targetable by your spells, meaning you can

them if they’re stuck in a root and you can even give them

. While applying

to your pet individually during a burst window usually isn’t worth it, if you have to reapply

might be worthwhile as it’ll apply

to everyone it hits, including your pet.
Playing

into Resto Shaman compositions will help you to knock your enemies from
大地之墙图腾

, allowing you to force even more CDs from the enemy team or creating a kill opportunity just because of it. Sometimes this is not needed if you are playing with a class that can do it by themselves like Elemental Shaman or Hunter.
When one of our teammate gets

from a Sub Rogue we can heal them and support them even though they will become untargetable for us with

, potentially avoiding their death.
Using

while a enemy is low health and about to die can make the enemy healer use
