Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Adapting to Battle for Azeroth's pre-patch guide as a Elemental Shaman. Patch 8.0 brings a lot of changes from BFA to the world of Azeroth and this guide is made to make sure you are prepared for all upcoming changes. This guide gives you an overview of all the changes happening with patch 8.0 for Elemental Shaman.
This pre-patch page is intended to help you know the changes to Elemental Shaman during the pre-patch. Note that during pre-patch, while artifacts
no longer work
, we do not have our
azerite powers
yet, meaning this isn't the final picture for specs in BFA. However, we still retain the powers from legendaries, which will continue working
up to level 115
, creating some interesting situations, as some effects from legendaries
became baseline effects or talents in BFA
.

What has changed from Legion to the BFA Pre-Patch?
Biggest Changes

Generation has been adjusted for single target, as the amount of

generated from both

has been lowered by a similar amount.

As you may have seen with many other specializations, our talent tree was shuffled around so that talents with similar goals were moved to be on the same tier, as Blizzard wanted to make sure that selecting talents wasn't as simple as picking the AoE talent on the row for AoE and swapping to the single target talent on the row for single target.
Removed Abilities
The only baseline ability that Elemental lost moving from Legion to BFA is the passive Elemental Focus, which used to cause critical strikes to increase the damage of our next 2 spells by 10%.
For talents, Elemental lost our darling for movement REMOVED

Artifact Abilities Going Away
Most of the rest of the traits on

were passive increases, but there are a few traits that we'll notice when they're gone.

As part of the model revamp to elementals, Elemental Shaman get a new Fire Elemental. Read more on visuals:
Updated Creature Models in BFA

War Mode
Another change from Legion into BFA is the addition of
War Mode
. War Mode is a new World PvP system in the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch, along with the new Honor system and Honor Talents. You are now able to toggle War Mode while in a capital city to gain access to PvP Talents in the outdoor world as well as other bonuses, like increased rewards from World quests and 10% extra experience. The downside is that you will always be in PvP combat mode, with the rewards counterbalancing that risk.
Changes to the Global Cooldown (GCD) for Ele Shamans
The Global Cooldown, or GCD, is a short lockout period which controls the rate with which abilities can be used; spells that are on the GCD are unable to be used simultaneously, while only abilities off the GCD can be used at the same time or during that lockout period. The global cooldown starts at 1.0 second for energy resource classes, and 1.5 seconds divided by haste for all others.
In Battle for Azeroth, many abilities which used to be off the GCD are now controlled by it. For Ele Shamans the abilities affected by this change are:

Blizzard is placing most DPS cooldowns on the Global Cooldown going into BFA, and Elemental is no exception. We share 2 abilities across all shaman specs that will both be going on the GCD going into BFA -

. As both of these are relatively long cooldowns, there is no major impact to our play with these changes.
Returning Legendary and Artifact Effects
In Battle for Azeroth, many old artifact traits and legendary effects from Legion were turned into talents and baseline abilities. It is known that we will lose our Artifacts
in a future event
. To add to that, Legion legendaries
will stop working at level 116

As you may have noticed from the New Abilities section above, we have three Artifact abilities/traits sticking around going into BFA. Our artifact ability,

only has 2 charges and doesn't have the increased damage of the original, but it does get the Static Overload effect (procs

The third thing we're keeping from our Artifact is the

. As this is based on max hp, it shouldn't be plagued by the scaling issues that

had for most of Legion.
Playstyle changes
Currently, the sum of all these changes doesn't change how we play Elemental too much moving from Legion to Battle For Azeroth. Our basic rotation stays almost exactly the same as it was before, and we have a mix of old and new talents to enjoy. The flow of single target takes a little bit of play to get used to as the numbers on

have changed but is relatively unchanged once you're comfortable with the new numbers. The flow of AoE sees the largest change, and you can expect to cast far less

s than you are used to casting today as the cost of

has gone up while AoE

generation (even with the new talents aimed at increasing

generation in play) has gone down significantly.
Single-Target Talent Builds to use in the Pre-Patch
Right now there's one build with extremely strong synergy for the pre-patch. Extremely strong synergy at 110 brings the combination of

to the top of the table, and in the pre-patch, nothing else on those rows compete with the synergy provided by the three of them combined.

With the above in mind, you can expect pre-patch talent builds to look like this:

AoE talents have little variation right now as

are the only talents on the level 15 & 90 talent rows respectively with any AoE value whatsoever (and even then it’s small.)

are strong burst AoE and you can pick between them depending on the needs of your group and how your AoE Maelstrom generation feels to you.

I’d really like to see Storm Elemental not replace Fire Elemental. There’s a class (and spec) fantasy about using the elements to aid you and replacing one with another doesn’t feel right when are spells are fueled by earth, fire, and wind elemental as Elemental Shaman.
Also, it seems like flame shock and lava burst are fillers around lightning bolt, chain lightning, and earth shock since most talents enhance the latter rather than the former.

I struggled so much in Legion with my dps and used every build out there. I hope these changes can fix the problems I was having, but Ele always seems to get the shaft when it comes to talent changes. I've been Ele since the start but there's a good chance I may end up doing more healing in BFA if my dps is still horrible.

Can someone explain the power behind the single target build here? I don't see it. I feel it would be much more powerful to have:
Echo with Soul of the Farseer on tier 15
Master of the Elements on 30
High Voltage on 60
Icefury on 90
Ascendance on 100
While this build will be more complex in terms of lava burst weaving, you can always have earth shocks that deal at least 5k damage at 110. The buff from Master of the Elements also increases nearly all of our spells that deal damage save lava burst, earthquake and one or two others. Icefury also adds another generation tool, allowing us to build up to 60 maelstrom to cast our Earth Shocks. The buff from Icefury also gives us something to cast while we are waiting on the CD of lavaburst, however, lightning bolt should be prioritized to generate more maelstrom.
The bottom line here is you can have a 20% damage buff on most of your spells.
Spells that consume buff from MotE:
Lightning bolt
Elemental Blast
Earth Shock
Icefury
Frost Shock
Chasing lightning
Thunderstorm
As stated before, the weaving mayb ge more complex, but if you keep flame shock up, you should be getting more than enough resets to make it easier and not have to wait on the CD. This is done from my testing on the PTR with the most recent build.
Exposed Elements also got a nerf of 25%, so you no longer double the damage of it, and that's only one spell one time after you cast one earth shock. What that means is that you only get the buffed lightning bolt once every 10-30 seconds or so.
While the bluffs from Totem mastery are nice and I can see the synergy between storm totem with the overload buff, the rest don't feel like they do much. 2% hate is nice, 10% damage on flame shock ticks is great, and the 1 MS/second is also nice, but the 20% damage amp on nearly all of your spells feels much more worthwhile than having to babysit totems.
The buff from Unlimited Power is not refreshed when you gain another stack, too, as I'm sure most already know, but, for those who don't, I reiterate.
I understand this build is more lightning bolt focused and getting as many off as possible within a window of time to decrease cast speed to generate more maelstrom to cast more earth shocks thus buffing more lightning bolts, still only one, mind you, but I can't help but feel like the large buff to a singular spell and only once is better than a smaller buff to almost all of our spells that is up much more often. Another point I didn't touch on earlier, I am aware we will have to choose echo or EB when we lose legos, but when that happens, you take echo for the wiggle room of lava surge procs and the ability to always have the CD timer going even if you already have one in stock.
I am not calling the author of this guide wrong. I mainly wrote this out to share my findings and then hopefully provoke an explanation of why the build, single target specifically, is strong. Because, truthfully, I just see some talents listed and then us being told that they're strong together. No explanation as to why. That is why I am writing this comment. I hope I can receive a response of some kind, but who knows. Maybe I will or won't.
