Heart of Azeroth
, which allows you to mix and match several legendary-quality effects. What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any

type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Enhancement Shaman Essence Simulations

Don't forget that this is simply an overview; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using

Again, this is simply an overview. Certain Essences, such as Worldvein minor, may be worse in practice on encounters with heavy movement or when you are the only player in your group using it. Reference the Essence notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of each individual power.
Note that these don't specify individual advantages of each Essence, and is still a work in progress (in particular the Multi Target results). These are detailed below in the Major/Minor Essence sections.
Best Enhancement Shaman Major Essences
While only one Major power can be used at a time, whichever Essence is socketed into the center node of the Heart of Azeroth will also activate its Minor Power, so both effects should be taken into consideration when determining which to use. Below is a short ranking of notable Top Tier, Mid Tier, and Bottom or strictly Situational Tier Major Essences you should consider using when playing a Enhancement Shaman. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.

The 8.3 buff to this has turned it into a burst of Primary stats every minute for 18 seconds, meaning it will cover all of our cooldowns and is available more frequently than any other option. As long as the downside of positioning doesn't impact you, this makes it an extremely strong choice as well as being fairly flexible, and packing a good minor to go alongside it if you have others in your group using it. The Major spawning shards during your high burst period also adds to consistency during these burst windows, so is now a significantly better choice than in 8.2.5.
The Minor, especially at rank 3, can sustain the four shards required if enough players in your group have it equipped in a Minor slot. This gives a solid semi-permanent boost to your Agility that is useful.
Effect on gameplay

The most versatile Major choice, giving an additional cooldown to layer on top of either

depending on your talent selection that will synchronise after rank 2. This provides a very tangible burst of damage that can be used both in single target in short burst windows, or to augment the power of our burst tool

, making it a great choice in M+ and a solid choice in raids assuming the encounter allows you to make use of it.
The Minor Power is one of the strongest available, but is simply a passive proc so you will not need to worry about, nor can you micromanage it. The large amount of passive stats make it a strong choice, and its ease of use alongside a solid Haste steroid when it caps out at 40 makes it a good effect.
Effect on gameplay
Because Essence damage is not affected by any of our cooldowns, this will slot in after you activate your other cooldowns which makes it slightly cumbersome to use. You ideally want to make use of the
仇敌之血
active when you have already triggered either

(with
元素之灵
taken) or
升腾
due to the buff only lasting for 10 seconds and 5 seconds respectively, to make sure none of it is wasted on setting up on-GCD buffs/cooldowns.

A strong single target Major choice, especially if you are in need of an additional burst cooldown that lines up with either

depending on your talent selection. The elemental deals strong damage on its own, and also triggers the accompanying Minor power, boosting your own damage by 3% after reaching rank 3 on targets hit while active too. On top of that, the hefty boost to Haste at rank 3 after it has ramped up provides a significant boost do our damage profile in a short window.
This was hurt in the 8.3 changes however, so is not as dominant as it was previously
.
The Minor Power is just additional passive damage that will be triggered both my the spikes you fire with procs, and the Elemental you trigger with the Major. You don't need any micro-management, and a lot of the power of this is the synergy it has with the accompanying Major.
Effect on gameplay

Is the best AoE burst option, but having to channel the effect means it has a noticeable opportunity cost to making use of it. The beam it fires is also a line in front (think
裂地术
) instead of a cone, so can be difficult to line up over the duration. You can readjust while channeling though after reaching rank 3, so make use of this if targets move.
The Minor Power provides a consistent solid Haste buff. The effect is passive, and ramps up quickly when it drops off from a target swap, and even faster with the rank 3 boost to stacks on swaps, so you shouldn't need to worry too much about this. It can fall off however due to the short 4 second duration, so make sure to try and keep casting on targets with abilities such as
or
when forced out of range.
Effect on gameplay
Ideally you need to make sure you are lining it up with as many targets as possible. You can pre-cast this as targets are moving close so the channel effect activates on the group of enemies as they get in range. Making sure you line this up with large groups of enemies with each cooldown is important (as this will mostly see use in Mythic+), and not wasted on low target counts that may cause you to be caught without it available when needed. Treat it like a bigger, better version of Sundering.
Keep in mind that this essence is available to all DPS classes, and any encounter with a heavy burst AoE element will likely have multiple players using it, so proper positioning and timing is essential to maximizing its damage potential. Too many players using it can also very likely overkill the targets, resulting in lost damage for everyone involved. Either co-ordinate with your group to stagger them, or select a different option as Enhancement's sustained damage profile in AoE will likely suffer one of the most from taking this.

Provides a more frequent option compared to Focusing Iris, but isn't as frontloaded, with the advantage of allowing you to still cast when used. If used smartly the on-kill damage boost granted at rank 3 can also be capitalised upon for extra burst in a short window. Balancing this will be difficult however, as you don't want to waste the AoE effect on targetse that will all die at the same time. This damage profile does lend well toward Enhancement's damage funneling design, so
The Minor Power is also one of the only options that deals direct damage in an AoE, so combining the two can provide a good mix of additional damage sources if most of your time is spent against multiple targets. This leans very strongly toward Mythic+ oriented content.
Both of these effects gain additional benefits when Abberation enemy types are present. While this isn't too common, it may factor into your choice in certain niche circumstances.
Effect on gameplay
This should simply be used whenever a large group of enemies are clumped together to capitalise on the AoE effect. If you can time it well to align with when one target will die but still get the full effect on other targets, this will make use of the additional damage boost too. This doesn't gain any effects from any of the Enhancement cooldowns, so there is no need to hold or synchronise.

The Major grants an additional ability that deals heavy damage that ramps up with each cast, resetting at 3. The Rank 3 also gives extra flexibility with an additional charge, and is also the easiest to obtain Essence. This serves as a good standard choice that will always be useful on single target situations, dealing solid burst damage that can be pooled up to fill in extra empty GCDs when they show up.
The Minor Power is a random proc DoT effect that at rank 3 can stack up to 3 times, providing a solid but not very exciting single target increase - note this is an RPPM so doesn't upscale in AoE at all.
Effect on gameplay
This should simply be used whenever you find yourself with empty GCDs in your rotation, making sure to never leave it capped on charges at rank 3. At rank 1 and rank 2 however, you simply use it on CD as efficiently as possible.

The Major grants an additional ability that deals heavy damage that has a cooldown reduction effect at certain target Health thresholds. This is a more direct version of Crucible of Flame, and can be used to snipe kills on enemies to make use of the damage buff at rank 3. It does however require a high GCD investment with the potential of failure, meaning that it's roughly the same in terms of output.
The Minor is a simple damage proc, but at Rank 3 has a 400% increased chance to trigger on targets below 20% Health. This deals a lot of damage as it is, and becomes even stronger in Execute windows, but there is no significant gameplay change involved with using this.
This is also one of the 3 Essences that grants a
Unique
10 Corruption Resistance, (
meaning you can only gain this from
one
equipped Essence
). This is likely to be mandatory in one of your Essence slots, but can be gained from using a Minor as well. Just make sure to have one equipped if using Corrupted gear.
Effect on gameplay
This should always be used on cooldown. At Rank 3, consider holding it briefly if you know there is an opportunity to get a killing blow for the cooldown reduction and damage increase, but otherwise treat it is a high priority rotational ability.

The Major grants an additional ability buffs all nearby party members (note:
not raid, just party
members) with a 20 second buff that increases Essence damage by 45%. This is very strong as it affects both Majors and Minors, and if co-ordinated is useful for those who are using direct damage options. It does however provide little benefit to the user, so is a utility option if you need one in your group to meet certain checks.
The Minor is another utility option that has a 4 RPPM chance to buff you and up to 2 other allies in your party or raid with Haste, and reduce both all of their Major essences' cooldown by 1 second. This is useful to help allies, but has a low value for you, and changes nothing about your gameplay outside of possibly using the Major more frequently.
This is also one of the 3 Essences that grants a
Unique
10 Corruption Resistance, (
meaning you can only gain this from
one
equipped Essence
). This is likely to be mandatory in one of your Essence slots, but can be gained from using a Minor as well. Just make sure to have one equipped if using Corrupted gear.
Effect on gameplay
This requires significant co-ordination to make sure you are positioned near all other party members when you cast it, so they all recieve the buff due to its short range. If you're taking this Essence, you should make sure your other party members are aware of when you intend to use it, and pre-plan around them rather than yourself.

. Given that Maelstrom only has any tangible value with Primal Primer builds, this makes it virtually useless for any other build that isn't using this. Even then, its long cooldown and inability to synchronise conveniently with
元素之灵
makes it a very weak Major choice.
The Minor Power generates roughly 1-1.1 Maelstrom per second, Usually around the 300 mark every 5 minutes. Due to the fluctuating cost of our Maelstrom spenders, this isn't entirely reliable. Only Primer ever really gains much from this, and it's fairly lackluster from a raw generation perspective. The Lucid Dreams Versatility buff when it triggers though has around 40-50% uptime, making up for some of that weakness.
Effect on gameplay
Combined with

this provides a window of near constant expenditure, but given the build is still limited by how fast it can generate

stacks that makes it questionable as an active. It should ideally be synced with Feral Spirit when possible, but sitting on the cooldown for too long shouldn't be done, meaning it only lines up every 3 Feral Spirit casts due to the

cooldown reduction.

Vision only really provides any significant benefit to Primal Primer oriented builds due to the additional reliance on

, which will also activate when talented. This shouldn't be used in other circumstances, as the baseline Feral Spirit effect on such a short duration is not valuable enough to invest a Major Essence slot into.
The Minor power may have some very niche uses for allowing additional cooldowns to be used if a fight timer specifically requires the cooldown reduction, but is one of the weakest available.

This grants
as an active ability in all content, including PvE instances and time spent with War Mode off. This talent is very much oriented to situations where you can buff up an ally that can capitalise on the Cooldown acceleration it grants, as Enhancement doesn't gain nearly as much due to the primary damage source being either cooldown unlocked, or working with resets via

. Unfortunately because of this, it's entirely speculative as to how useful this power will realistically be, but it is unlikely to make up for how weak the raw gain is for us.
The Minor Power grants a high amount of stacking Versatility. These are free secondaries, and given Versatility isn't a terrible stat we can make use of this without much punishment. This also gains additional benefits via the Major at Rank 3 that doubles the effect when we Interrupt, Dispel or CC a target, which may have some niche uses.
Effect on gameplay
You shuld ideally be casting
on a player in your group that gains particular benefit from enhanced cooldown recovery (such as a Mistweaver Monk during
), especially during cooldown windows. You will gain double the CDR effect if you cast this on yourself, but it is unlikely to make as significant of an impact. Note this is on the GCD so you need to play around this.

The Major displacement active suffers from

usually covering the base that this is needed for, but in some encounters it may be something that is required at some point. The sheer lack of output and difficulty to capitalise upon though makes this unlikely to be used outside of unusual strategies.
The Minor Power requires far too much movement to realistically activate on cooldown, and even then too many other Minors that are more accessible are available.
Effect on gameplay
Unfortunately, one of the benefits of this requires good pre-planning by setting the beacon down early before a displacement to reset you back to earth. If this is a requirement on encounters however this will be something you will need to do <2 seconds before the ability hits, to be moved at the right time. The damage reduction may also prove useful in some circumstances so you can pre-plan this. Don't worry too much about making use of the damage because if you're selecting this essence you're picking it for utility, not DPS.

The Major can be used as a low cooldown filler in empty GCDs, but even in that case is outclassed by

due to our lack of Critical Strike on our gear. This essence as of right now should be strictly avoided by Enhancement.
The Minor takes a significant amount of time to stack up due to the internal cooldown, and the duration is far too short for us to capitalise upon due to our sustained damage profile.
Effect on gameplay
You should try to line up the use of

, but due to the low RPPM this is unlikely to naturally synchronise.

The Major grants an additional ability that allows you to copy the currently slotted Major Essence of an ally. This currently looks like a very niche option that may be used to steal Healer or Tank effects if survival is needed, but otherwise it would be better to simply use the Major you would take from any DPS. This is due to the cooldown penalty hurting any potential benefits the flexibility would provide.
The Minor provides additional Agility and Haste when an Ally uses their equipped Major Essence. This requires no additional gameplay to make use of, and is a reasonably solid choice.
This is also one of the 3 Essences that grants a
Unique
10 Corruption Resistance, (
meaning you can only gain this from
one
equipped Essence
). This is likely to be mandatory in one of your Essence slots, but can be gained from using a Minor as well. Just make sure to have one equipped if using Corrupted gear.
Effect on gameplay
Making use of this Essence is going to require acute knowledge of an encounter if you have it equipped, as there should be a reason to have it over anything else, which makes it a personal choice rather than something that can be explained by a rule.
Best Enhancement Shaman Minor Essences
Two additional Minor Essence slots can be unlocked over time, providing additional benefit. While the above rankings already detailed several minor bonuses, the rankings below consider only the Minor or how it might interact when using it alongside a different Major Essence. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.

Effect on gameplay
This is basically a free chunk of secondaries that cycles up and down. Due to us being a sustained damage profile, when and where the effects trigger are usually out of our control and there's not a lot we can do to pool for when it's about to hit, just treat it as a passive boost.

Grants an increasing amount of Versatility with each Rank, with Rank 3 providing a hefty bonus at 8 stacks. While we don't seek out Vers, having a near passive boost that's easy to maintain makes it an easy pick as a Minor.

Entirely passive, just treat it as a free boost to your secondaries.

The Minor is a simple damage proc, but at Rank 3 has a 400% increased chance to trigger on targets below 20% Health. This deals a lot of damage as it is, and becomes even stronger in Execute windows, but there is no significant gameplay change involved with using this.
This is also one of the 3 Essences that grants a
Unique
10 Corruption Resistance, (
meaning you can only gain this from
one
equipped Essence
). This is likely to be mandatory in one of your Essence slots, just make sure to have one equipped if using Corrupted gear.
Effect on gameplay
Entirely passive, just be aware that you should prioritise hitting targets below 20% if you can, as it will gain additional value there.

The Minor Power is a random proc DoT effect that at rank 3 can stack up to 3 times, providing a solid but not very exciting single target increase - note this is an RPPM so doesn't upscale in AoE at all.

Passive DoT effect, with some RNG attached to the refreshes if it lines up well. Has no gameplay attached to it outside of just pressing your buttons.

The Minor Power generates roughly 1-1.1 Maelstrom per second, Usually around the 300 mark every 5 minutes. Due to the fluctuating cost of our Maelstrom spenders, this isn't entirely reliable. Only Primer ever really gains much from this, and it's fairly lackluster from a raw generation perspective. The Lucid Dreams Versatility buff when it triggers though has around 40-50% uptime, making up for some of that weakness.
When this is paired with
空气之怒
however, this can raise to 90%+ uptime and provide an incredibly large amount of healing. Any encounter that doesn't require the benefits

provides, this is an extremely strong choice. This grants not only comparable single target, but a huge amount of survival for free due to how overloaded the single point minor is.
Effect on gameplay
This is mostly passive, though you may have to react to some small bursts of additional Maelstrom after

casts in particular to avoid missing your Primal Primer cycles.

Build: Any
The only Minor power that does raw AoE damage with a reasonable proc rate, making it well suited for situations that have a high target count that lives for a reasonable amount of time such as in Mythic+ dungeons.
Effect on gameplay
Remember that the AoE only has an 8 yard range, so the more spread targets are, the worse this becomes. Consider this when picking it if you think enemies will be too spread to consistently make use of this.

The Minor, especially at rank 3, can sustain the four shards required if enough players in your group have it equipped in a Minor slot. This gives a solid semi-permanent boost to your Agility that is useful. Make sure to co-ordinate with your group to know whether or not this is actively worth capitalising upon, because if you can't sustain the 4 stacks then other options are better.
Effect on gameplay
Just pay attention to where each Lifeblood Shard spawns, and try to position around a clump of other melee players to spawn them in convenient spots. Be aware that this may not always be consistent if high movement is present in an encounter, which may make this a less ideal choice.

The Minor will trigger on yourself so can be used to try and reduce the cooldown of your currently slotted Major Essence. While this is useful on paper, all of the Major Essences that work best for Enhancement already sync up with our cooldowns so you will mostly be using it for the Haste buff. If a situation arises where you need damage more often than you would normally be able to provide however, this may see some use.
This is also one of the 3 Essences that grants a

The Minor Power is just additional passive damage that will be triggered both my the spikes you fire with procs. This also boosts your own damage dealt to the target at rank 3 for a brief period when triggered.
Effect on gameplay
Due to the effect being random, while it does boost your own damage when active it's hard for Enhancement to really play around it. Try and make sure you aren't doing any low value GCD casts during the debuff uptime, but sometimes this simply can't be helped and should just be treated as an overall passive damage increase to your sustained DPS.

The Minor provides additional Agility and Haste when an Ally uses their equipped Major Essence. This requires no additional gameplay to make use of, and is a reasonably solid choice. You are also providing some value to them by granting them Haste via the proc, but is worse than the other personal options you can pick in the Top Tier slots.

, so should be avoided.

The Minor takes a significant amount of time to stack up due to the internal cooldown, and the duration is far too short for us to capitalise upon due to our sustained damage profile.
Effect on gameplay
If you choose to take this you should be paying attention to the stack count to make sure you try to fill the brief window with high value GCDs, but due to the RNG nature of our damage profile sometimes that simply isn't possible. This makes the essence too volatile to really make use of.

This essence simply grants more uses of

, which only really has any synergy with

if taken due to how weak the base cooldown is. It's highly unlikely you will need such a low cooldown reduction amount to synchronise with fight mechanics, and even more unlikely it will grant an additional use. This minor should be avoided at all times if you aren't considerin the Major.
Effect on gameplay
Passive cooldown reduction, nothing to play around outside of just using your cooldowns appropriately.
