Welcome to Wowhead's Enhancement Shaman Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Enhancement Shamans in PvP including defensive stalling, and some common mistakes that Enhancement Shamans make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your utility will prove useful. We also cover ideal rotations for Enhancement Shamans in PvP, such as a basic single damage rotation, burst damage rotation, and multi-target rotation. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much damage as you can (when it is possible to do so).

Important Cooldowns for Enhancement Shamans in PvP
This section focuses on the important abilities and how to use them properly, going over the Offensive, Defensive and Utility cooldowns. Using these well can turn the tides of the game, allowing you to carry your team to victory!
Offensive
裂地术
裂地术
is one of the best offensive cooldowns you have as an Enhancement Shaman. Not only does it deal incredible damage, it also knocks enemies down for a couple of seconds, making them unable to use most abilities. This can allow you to get off extra burst damage, or even time a
电能图腾
on them. You could even use
裂地术
as a potential finishing move if the enemy player drops low on Health.

升腾
is definitely the biggest offensive cooldown you have, basically becoming a ranged terminator when you use it. You want to use it when you have a

and when you know you can connect for quite some time, ideally enough to force a big defensive cooldown(s) or land a kill. Remember when you initially press this button, it also does a ton of damage in a nearby melee range, so make sure to try and utilize it if you want to deal as much damage as possible.

Playing with

essentially makes

a cooldown based ability when you use it. As such, you want to pop your first
风怒图腾
when you want to burst down properly in order to make great use of
毁灭之风
, which will be a big priority in Enhancement Shaman gameplay. During that 1 minute of downtime though, you are then free to use
风怒图腾
as often as possible, baring in mind your debuff so you don't accidently use
毁灭之风
at the wrong time!

Another great cooldown that Enhance can utilize, mainly for offensive reasons. When playing with
萨满之道
, make sure you
ALWAYS
use it on your DPS partner or your healer, since you will receive the buff anyway. This will make the cooldown even more powerful, having 2 targets with
嗜血
. Of course, in 3v3, you will ideally want this on your other DPS partner when making offensive setups. Be careful using this on cooldown, as it will cost an extreme amount of mana, so if you play this pvp talent for some reason, you'll want to win the games quite quickly.

When playing with

you pretty much want to use
元素之灵
as often as possible in order to gain more damage from them. More up-time of these wolves will increase your overall pressure, which is exactly what you need when you play this build.

Using offensive

can provide a ton of high burst whenever it's used. The best use of this in an offensive manor is to use it like a finishing ability, such as Execute. Pressing it when players are low will have a high chance of killing the target or at least forcing huge defensive cooldowns in order to survive!
Defensive

Here we have

again! Whilst this can be used for offensive measures, you can use it defensively as well for its massive healing! This will be needed in matchups where it's difficult to survive and you need the extra healing throughput for your team. A good example is when dealing with an Affliction Warlock's

will become much more of a defensive cooldown when playing with

. This means that your next instant

s will do an incredible amount of extra healing, useful in any situation where you need to save you or your partners from the brink of death!

is your biggest defensive cooldown, so using it well will be vital to your survival. Using this during major incoming offensive cooldowns is always a good trade. Just make sure you don't overlap this with another big defensive cooldown from your team, as this could most likely mean your demise in future setups.

Due to having

can now be used as an extra defensive cooldown to have at the start of arena games or during troublesome moments! Having this amount of extra HP will make it more difficult for teams to burst you down, especially with other defensive cooldowns at the ready or if you have any self-healing yourself! This is commonly used against heavy opener teams, such as against RMP, or simply when dealing with big offensive cooldown pressure in the near future. Since it lasts for 1 minute, you can't really go wrong with using it!
Using
is slightly different from
星界转移
as it's only effective against physical damage. You can use it during heavy offensive cooldowns or during heavy pressure where your healer is in crowd control and you need it to live well, such as against junglecleave, if they land a trap on your healer and you're dropping low on HP. You should not be this talent where there is heavy magic damage pressure, as this will be a useless pick against them! It's also quite common to cancel your ethereal form, not wanting to sit the full duration if you're safe to get out of it, so you can build up your pressure again.
Utility
战栗图腾
Having this ability will be excellent into any class with a
恐惧
mechanic. Typically you will want to use this on your healer to free them of this type of CC whenever needed. You could also try to pre-tremor AoE fears from the likes of Priests or Warriors, if needed! Into compositions that have multiple fears, you'll need to try assess the situation and use it properly so that you don't waste this cooldown.

This is a highly versatile, new PvP talent that can be used in many different ways. Enh can utilize
闪电之盾
and
大地之盾
for this PvP talent. The knock effect with
闪电之盾
could make it useful against casters, adding to the disruption an enhancement shaman has, stopping their cast. This could be valuable against incoming crowd control on your healer, or during big damaging casts! The root effect from
大地之盾
and this PvP talent could be nice against melee if you need more peels against them, or into casters where you're chasing your target and need to root them in place. More testing is needed but in my opinion, the main use of this talent will be to knock casts, otherwise it may not be worth having.
妖术
Having
妖术
is quite powerful against non-decurse teams. You could use it on anyone; either reducing pressure on specific classes, or on healers if you want to look for offensive opportunities in taking down a DPS target. That being said, against decurse teams, it will be more difficult to use
妖术
. You could use it on the decurse class, depending on which class it is. You could also look to cross CC at the same time the Hex lands on a target, in order to stop the decurse from dispelling the Hex! This would require good coordination with you and your teammates.

Another new PvP talent, mainly used to enemy targets from kiting you, increasing your up-time on them. It could also be used defensively, peeling of melee chasing you or your partners, which could buy you enough time to get away. The only problem with this totem is that it can be killed easily by most classes, which could make it lacklustre compared to other PvP talents.

根基图腾
is an excellent PvP talent to have and is taken in most arena games, so it's important that you can use it well. Different situations call for different uses of
根基图腾
, but there some general ways in which you want to use it. The first and foremost is stopping Magic CC, which will be incredibly powerful against Mages. The second way is to stop big Magic damage from hitting you or your teammates, such as
混乱之箭
. Niche situations can arise where you want to look at preventing magical interrupts, or CC when playing offensively.

On the surface,
电能图腾
is a weak stun - which in all fairness it is when compared to say a Rogue's
肾击
. However, you can still utilize this spec depending on the partners you have, giving it some use. For example, when playing with a Monk, you could land a

into

combo, which most enemy teams won't be able to kill. If you want to stun your targets by yourself, you could utilize
裂地术
as mentioned above, but it isn't always reliable and may not be the best way to make use of
裂地术
.
Effective Strategies for Enhancement Shamans in PvP
Enhancement Shamans are known for dealing a high amount of burst damage with cooldowns. Outside of that, they're focused on dealing decent passive pressure, as well as being disruptive towards the enemy teams aggression and playing to survive long enough to get their offensive cooldowns back and look to create heavy offensive setups when possible.
Creating Offensive Setups
Creating setups is vital as you rely on your
萨满之道
,
毁灭之风
and
升腾
cooldowns to find kills in the arena. As such, you'll need to create offensive setups with your partners to pull this off properly, forcing the enemy team to use heavy defensive cooldowns, eventually leading to situations where they don't have strong enough defensive cooldowns to survive one of your offensive setups, thus taking them down! The best way to create these offensive setups is usually with crowd control on the enemy healer, as well as stunning the target you want to kill, popping your offensive cooldowns to kill them rapidly. An example of this could be with Windwalker Monks, you can look to setup
分筋错骨

on enemy healers, with a

on the kill target(s) and pop your offensive cooldowns here to swiftly take them down.
Note that if you find yourself popping all your offensive cooldowns at once and the enemy team is dealing with it with relative ease, you may want to try splitting your offensive cooldowns so that you can create more offensive opportunities that the enemy team may struggle to have defensive cooldowns for. Another thing to note is that sometimes healers may be the best kill target, in which case you stun them for kills and crowd control the dps that could disrupt your offensive pressure the most. An example could be wanting to kill a Disc Priest and crowd controlling a Mage, stopping them from peeling you.
Target Choice
Whilst enhancement shamans can deal immense damage with cooldowns, most of the time their passive pressure is only decent, depending on the target they're on. Since you have quite limited mobility, you want to try and be on targets that you have an easier time to connect to, in order to increase your passive pressure as much as possible. However, sometimes you may be forced to go on targets that can kite you quite a lot. When this happens, utilizing
幽魂之狼
is usually an excellent solution, hindering snares on you, which allows you to catchup to targets with more ease.
Standard Damage Rotation
Note:
When it comes to single target rotation, there are a couple of things you'll bare in mind compared to your PvE rotation. Most notably, you'll be holding onto
漩涡武器
stacks for
治疗之涌
which will be necessary into most compositions. That means that your
闪电箭
usage will be much lower compared to PvE, since you don't want to run out of Maelstrom stacks before an enemy team starts dealing big pressure.
Bare in mind that your rotation will also differ depending on the builds you play, usually changing between
毁灭之风
or
始源熔岩助动器
builds.

Burst Damage Rotation
This remains
exactly
the same as your
Standard Damage Rotation
but is incorporated with your offensive cooldowns.

will be your most powerful offensive cooldown so it's important to use it often. Use additional offensive cooldowns with it if you're sure you can get a kill or at least make it worthwhile!
升腾
could be used to try and bait out defensive cooldowns, or to time with
毁灭之风
to give the biggest amount of pressure you can have in the arena game. Having both these offensive cooldowns active should at least force big defensive cooldowns or be a prominent way to land kills!
As for
收割链
and
裂地术
, both of these spells can deal a huge chunk of damage instantly, meaning they could be used if an enemy target is low, using them like an execute mechanic. If a target is around 20% HP, then an instant
收割链
could easily take them out unsuspectingly, so be ready to use them if this situation happens, with or without other offensive cooldowns. That being said, their are multiple uses with both
收割链
and
裂地术
, as they provide defensive niche's as well. So make sure you use them offensively against compositions where you don't need their defensive usages.
When using
始源熔岩助动器
you can utilize this in 2 different ways. The first is to simply use
熔岩猛击
on cooldown, trying to get as many usages of this ability throughout a game. The second way, which is more ideal for burst damage, is to get 8 stacks of
始源熔岩助动器
and/or ideally a
灼热之手
proc, giving you an absurd amount of damage on your next
熔岩猛击
.
If using
巫医的狼骨
then that means playing with
元素之灵
and simply using this on cooldown. It doesn't deal burst damage but has a ton of passive pressure and with the reduced cooldown effects, you'll want to keep using this as soon as it's up again so that you can benefit from it's damage throughout an arena game!
Multi-Target Damage Rotation
When dealing multi-target pressure, this is exactly the same as your single target rotation but you should prioritize
毁灭闪电
when dealing standard or burst damage, using it when you can hit 2 or more targets. This will increase your
风暴打击
s damage by quite a big margin, giving you much more overall damage!
It's also important to try and keep up as many
烈焰震击
s on other targets when possible. This will help proc your
元素导能
more often and help with having more

s.
If you are wanting to cleave 2 or more targets, then I suggest taking
驾驭雷电
as a PvP talent which will dramatically increase your DPS in these situations. It's great for passive pressure on cleaved targets and useful against melee cleaves or pet teams.
Common Mistakes Enhancement Shamans Make
Not Using Team Utility Correctly
Enhancement is a support class, and needs to be played as such. This means efficient uses of
净化灵魂
, using
根基图腾
on important crowd control, and using interrupts when needed. This is a skill gained by playing a lot of games, so just practice! Mastering team utility is often what sets the good Shamans apart from the best ones!
Spending too much Mana
Now that mana regeneration is pretty weak for enhancement shamans, it means that you'll be limited on the amount of mana you can spend in an arena game, especially in longer arena matches. Spending too much mana on
治疗之涌
,
净化术
,
净化灵魂
are usually the biggest reasons to why you will go OOM quickly in a game, making you less impactful in a game. As a small tip, most of the time you'll be wanting to spend most of your mana on
治疗之涌
s, ideally only when needed. So don't overuse other mana costing spells too much in games that could last a while.
Not saving Maelstrom stacks for
治疗之涌
Now that
治疗之涌
does a ton of healing, you can use it quite a lot in order to help deal with pressure. You should only use it in situations where your healer is struggling to deal with the pressure, which is either during offensive cooldowns or if they're stuck in crowd control. During these moments, you'll need to make sure you have
漩涡武器
stacks to get 1 or 2
治疗之涌
s during this time. This could not only allow you to live an offensive setup from the enemy team, but it could also hold onto your vital defensive cooldowns, increasing your survivability throughout a game!
Refreshing
大地之盾
or
闪电之盾
The only time where this is failproof is when using
闪电之盾
at all times when not taking any damage. Outside of that, you'll need to reapply
大地之盾
at times where it falls off in order to have extra healing on yourself, from yourself! Failing to reapply it will mean you lose out on a bit of self-healing, being quite a sufficient amount when you consider healing yourself with
治疗之涌
!
Throughout an arena game, the enemy team may change target as well, which means you could give your partners
大地之盾
, as well as then applying
闪电之盾
to yourself, which could increase your damage! So keep an eye out for who the enemy team targets in order to make better use of your own shields!
Popping offensive CD's without a stun on your current target
Whilst this may not seem like a big deal to some targets, or at lower ratings if the enemy team doesn't peel you, as you advance in ratings you'll start meeting players aware enough to peel you on your offensive cooldowns. Without your offensive cooldowns, it will be difficult to land kills as an enhancement shaman, so most of the time you'll need a stun on your current target to lock them down for a few seconds, allowing you to burst them with your offensive cooldowns!
Without this, the enemy target could easily kite you, peel you, or use defensive cooldowns in order to survive. Some compositions can easily rotate this every time you use offensive cooldowns, which can be a sure way to deal with you and ultimately beat you. So make sure you at least land CC on your current target, as well as potentially cross CCing to prevent being peeled during your offensive cooldowns (if you have access to it).
Remember to apply

and

EVERY
game!
I know this is an annoying bug and not in the fault of the enhancement shamans, but every arena game you enter, you'll need to reapply
风怒武器
and
火舌武器
otherwise they will not work in the arena game. It's tedious and annoying but you'll get used to doing it or could even make WeakAura macros in order to help you remember it. It goes without saying it will be a big DPS loss if you don't have these weapon enhancements on, especially
风怒武器
!
Enhancement Shaman Tips and Tricks
Aside from having good utility and the ability to kite and evade many melee and caster classes, Enhancement Shamans are able to provide a niche toolkit that counter some healing classes. Another strength of Enhancement is having an offensive dispel with
净化术
. When facing Restoration Druids, Mistweaver Monks, and even Holy Paladins, an offensive dispel is really important due to the ability to remove key buffs, such as HoTs or utility buffs like
自由之手
. Quick offensive dispels can often swing matches in your favor.
净化术
ing the right spells
Having
净化术
can be incredibly powerful against certain compositions. It can take away big healing effects from healers, such as
全神贯注
shields,
大地之盾
from resto shamans, and
神恩术
to name a few! This can make it much more difficult for enemy healers to heal through your pressure, simply because you're spam purging these buffs off your kill target. It WILL also create more pressure itself than doing damage (outside of your offensive cooldowns)! You may not want to purge these all the time (due to mana issues explained before) but at the right time, using purge offensively will usually make the enemy team use more defensive cooldowns to survive, or simply die.
Outside of that, purge can and should be used against big offensive cooldowns! You can get rid of
燃烧
,
能量灌注
and even
黑暗灵魂:哀难
, which could save you from using a big defensive cooldown! Outside of that, you could also purge utility cooldowns, such as
自由之手
, allowing you to have easier up-time on targets, reducing their mobility. So make sure you know which abilities to purge and to be ready to purge them at the right time!
That being said, be careful when purging against teams or classes that have many buffs, such as Resto Druids. Using
净化术
too much to try and get 1 buff out of several is unlikely to happen and will cause you to run out of mana quickly. You could use purge 1-2 times to try your luck but don't go too crazy feeding half your mana bar into it as this could seriously do more harm than good in longer games!
Making good use of
电能图腾
This spell by itself can be weak, due to enemy players being able to kill it and negate it's effect completely. That being said, their are ways in which you could use it well in order to land it, or make it troublesome for the enemy team! Arguably, the best and easiest way to make use of this totem is by landing it on enemy healers already stuck in other crowd control (outside of Stun DR's). This can be very common when playing with monks usually having the common setup of
分筋错骨
>

. Make sure you communicate with your partners so that you can look to land your stun on enemy healers when another form of CC is ending!
Outside from that, you could look to setup cap stuns yourself, in the form of
电能图腾
>
裂地术
. This can be a way to ensure that you land a cap stun on multiple targets, however you'll want to make sure it lands on a healer so that they can't dispel it. It also won't be 100% reliable, as if enemy players are quick at killing totems, they could kill your cap totem during the global time in between these 2 spells. It can still be nice to use and possibly a good defensive peeling measure in dire situations!
Saving

Even though

is a powerful offensive spell, in a lot of matchups, you may need this for defensive healing, considering how squishy enhancement shamans can be, as well as
治疗之涌
being a limited resource in arena games, as you will OOM from using it too much! As such, it can be wise to save

to use in scary situations to help significantly with healing.
Good examples when to use this could be during a mages
燃烧
, a ret's
复仇之怒
, or a warlocks
黑暗灵魂:哀难
to help heal out the massive pressure these offensive cooldowns could deal! Another niche use could be during a sub rogues

on your partner, as this could help save them from dying to the 1 shot pressure window during this 2minute cooldown, being able to significantly help keep them alive!
Splitting up your offensive CD's!
Against good teams and certain compositions, when popping all your offensive cooldowns at once, you may find that the enemy team always have a reliable answer to your offensive cooldowns being popped at once, being able to live it with relative ease. If you find yourself losing often due to this reason, then you should look at trying to split-up your
毁灭之风
and
升腾
cooldowns! Splitting your cooldowns up like this could make it more difficult for the enemy team to survive, having to rotate defensive cooldowns more often and could be more prone to make mistakes throughout a game.

against Decurse classes!
Using this can be a bit niche, as it's dependent on the enemy team, if they have only 1 decurse class or not. If they do, then you can look to use

as a sure way to land crowd control on them, not being able to interrupt you during the wind shear lockout! This can be useful against Shamans or Mages if they have no other decurse on their team! Make sure you use wind shear on their respective interrupt schools, meaning to interrupt nature schools on shamans and arcane schools on mages, so that they can't interrupt your Hex!
Saving Maelstrom charges for
治疗之涌
If you're ever against a comp that usually bursts you down and are regularly in trouble with their offensive setups, you should look at trying to get 5 or even 10 stacks of maelstrom so you have instant
治疗之涌
s ready after their setup. This means when you come out of a stun, you can get off these 2 heals on yourself, being able to save yourself due to the massive healing you can deal! The only time you may need to be careful of this is during
控心术
or if there's significant healing reduction effects up.
