Welcome to Wowhead's guide for farming Motes to create Primals, the elemental building blocks of many recipes in Burning Crusade Classic. This guide will discuss what Primals and Motes are, basic information on creating Primals from Motes, as well as information about the two non-standard Primals,
源生之能
and
源生虚空
.
For targeted farming guides for each of the elemental Primals and Motes in Burning Crusade Classic, please see these guides:

What are Primals?
Primals
are used in a wide variety of recipes created with
炼金术
,
锻造
,
附魔
,
工程学
,
珠宝加工
,
制皮
, and
裁缝
. They are common reagents in high-level Rare and Epic gear recipes, enchants, armor kits, and more.
Primals are found in the following varieties:
源生空气
源生之土
源生火焰
源生之水
源生生命
源生法力
源生暗影
源生之能
源生虚空
What are Motes?
Elemental Primals are most commonly created from combining
Motes
. Combining ten Motes of a particular elemental type creates a corresponding Primal, ie. 10x
火焰微粒
can be combined to create one
源生火焰
. While Primals can and do drop off several different types of mobs in dungeons and across the world, the smaller Motes are easier to farm.
源生之能
and
源生虚空
are the only two Primals that are not created by combining Motes. These will be detailed in their own sections below.
Sources of Motes
Motes have several possible sources. The collection methods depend on the type of Mote targeted (not every type of Mote can be collected by all these methods):
Looted from specific elemental mobs:
Some elemental mobs have a chance to drop anywhere from 1-2 Motes. Each Primal type listed below will show the exact mobs to target and where to find them, along with approximate drop chances.
Collected with different Gathering professions:
Mining, Herbalism, and Fishing can also produce some types of Motes by mining ore, picking herbs, or fishing specific pools.
Created by transmuting one Primal type to another using
炼金术
: All Alchemy Transmute recipes associated with a particular Primal will be indicated in that Primal's guide.
Farmed by Engineers using the
气阀微粒提取器
:
Four zones have gas clouds that can be extracted for specific Motes. Only Engineers can create and use the
气阀微粒提取器
. For more information, please see the
Guide to the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor
Purchased through vendors:
(explained below)
Mote Vendors
There are a couple in-game vendors will sell Motes in
limited quantity
-- up to 3 Motes of 7 different elemental varieties (Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Life, Mana, and Shadow). This means they may or may not have any available at any given time. Respawn timers on the motes has been the subject of extended speculation, but is not 100% known. The time is likely measured in hours, not minutes. Since these are sold for only each (base; higher Consortium reputation will modify price), these will be pretty much perma-camped on some servers.
However, it's always worth a look.

Drop Rate vs. Drop Percentage
One hotly-debated topic in comments on farming motes revolves around a misunderstanding between
drop rate
and
drop percentage
.
Drop rate:
the individual chance a mob has to drop an item. This number is static and programmed into the mob*.
Drop percentage:
the cumulative number derived from a farming session. This number is variable.
*Yes, drop rates are estimates, but they are solid estimates. These are based on average drop percentages over a very large sample size rather than over just a few farming sessions.
In all the individual Primal guides, I give the current estimated
drop rate
of a mote off any given mob. The drop rate represents the static chance that a mob will drop Motes when killed. This also applies to the percentage chance of getting a mote from Mining, Herbalism, or Skinning.
If a mob has a 20% static
drop rate
, it doesn't mean that you are guaranteed to get motes off 20% of the mobs you kill. In other words, a 20% drop rate does not necessarily translate to a 20% drop percentage, because that will vary between farming sessions based on your luck with the RNG (random number generator).
Every time you kill a mob that has a 20% drop rate of a mote, that mob has a 1 in 5 chance to drop that mote.
Functionally, this resets with every mob. Each mob kill is a statistically independent event.
Say the RNG is pulling a number between 1-100. In that case, it has to roll a 20 or below to drop a mote. If it rolls 21-100, it doesn't drop a mote.
This means that it is possible to kill 100 identical mobs, each of which has a 20% drop
rate
, but end up with a drop
percentage
for that farming session that is either significantly above or below that average. It just means you were either lucky or unlucky for that farming trip. Getting a low drop percentage, even over a couple farming sessions, does not necessarily mean the drop rate was nerfed.
Don't fall for the Gambler's Fallacy, the idea that if an event happens more in the past that it's less likely to happen in the future. Looting 10 kills with no drops doesn't mean you're "destined" to get one on the 11th. If you flip a perfectly balanced coin and you get 10 heads in a row, the chances you're going to get tails on the next flip is the same it was on the previous 10: 50%. The statistical chances of getting that many in a row is an entirely different question. The RNG works the same way, even if sometimes feels like the RNG is either especially hot or out to get you.
Non-Standard Primals
Two Primals do not follow the same rules as the elemental Primals, so these are being treated separately. They're simple enough that they do not require separate guides to cover them.
Primal Might
源生之能
is created through the Alchemy ability
转化:源生之能
. It's used in 50 different profession recipes, mostly in creating Epic-level armor and weapons.
List of Recipes Using Primal Might
源生之能
requires five other Primals to create, and consumes the daily Transmute cooldown. You'll need to farm all of these to create it:
转化:源生之能
- 1x
源生空气
, 1x
源生之土
, 1x
源生火焰
, 1x
源生之水
, 1x
源生法力
The recipe required for this ability,
配方:源生之能
, is sold by vendors. These recipes are always available for sale, but are Bind on Pickup:
斯克雷亚
- Lower City, Shattrath City, /way 46.0 20.2
奥泰恩
<Alchemy Supplies> - The Vault of Lights, The Exodar, /way 28.0 62.0
梅拉瑞斯
<Alchemy Supplies> Court of the Sun, Silvermoon City, /way 67.0 19.2
Skreah, Altaa, and Melaris
Farming Primal Nether
源生虚空
is the only gathered Primal that does not have corresponding Motes. It is also the only Primal that is Bind on Pickup.
Primal Nether is a key component in many top-level Epic sets, as well as armor enhancements such as
虚空裂蹄腿甲片
,
虚空毒蛇腿甲片
,
金色魔线
, and
暗影布
.
List of Recipes Using Primal Nether
源生虚空
is only farmed from the last dungeon boss in Outland dungeons:
Normal
: very low chance (<5%) to drop from end bosses in level 68+
Heroic
: 100% chance of dropping from end boss
The end boss only drops 1 Primal Nether per run
. Since these are Bind on Pickup, be mindful of rolling on these if you aren't a crafter looking to create recipes with them soon.
The good news is that since it is a guaranteed drop from any end boss in any Heroic instance, you can choose your dungeons based on other goals, not just farming
源生虚空
.
