Introduction to Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
Druids in World of Warcraft are shapeshifters who are deeply in tune with the natural world. Druids take the form of a variety of creatures that emphasize different qualities of nature, inheriting the strengths and abilities of these creatures. The Feral specialization is for druids who channel the ferocity and fearlessness of wild beasts, taking on the massive strength of bears or the swiftness of cats. In World of Warcraft, feral druids are unique among all other classes because they can fill both a tank role or a DPS role with the same exact specialization, simply by shifting between bear and cat forms, respectively. This guide will focus on how to play a feral druid in a tanking role, staying in
to protect your group mates from enemies by directing their attention to you and surviving their attacks.
Tanks direct damage away from other players
In World of Warcraft, players in a dungeon or raid fill one of three roles: tank, DPS, or healer. DPS (or damage per second) classes unleash their abilities to deal damage to enemies (also called mobs), but are unable to survive getting hit by these enemies due to poor defensive traits. In contrast, tanks are, as the name suggests, defensive walls that do not deal much damage themselves, but can take the brunt of enemy attacks using defensive tactics and heavy armor. Healers keep the tank alive so that they can sustainably survive getting hit by enemies. In order for this paradigm to work, a tank has two key responsibilities:
Keeping an enemy's attention away from other players
Surviving the enemy's attacks
World of Warcraft uses a parameter called "Threat" for determining where an enemy's attention (also called aggro) lies: a mob will target the player that poses the highest Threat to them and ignore everyone else. Therefore, a tank's first responsibility is generating more Threat than anyone else in their group so that they are the sole target of incoming attacks. Threat can be generated either by dealing damage, or by using special abilities designed to generate high Threat, such as the
ability for Protection
战士
tanks and the
ability for Feral
德鲁伊
tanks. Similar to DPS classes, who use a "rotation" of multiple abilities to maximize their DPS, tanks also use a rotation to maximize their
TPS
, or Threat generated per second. For bear tanks specifically, the key abilities used in the TPS rotation are
,
,
, and
.
Feral Druid tanks use high armor to mitigate damage
In Classic WoW, there are a number of defensive stats that tanks can use to reduce incoming damage, in order to both survive enemy attacks and make the healing requirements on the tank manageable. For example, Protection
战士
and Protection
圣骑士
tanks rely heavily on blocking attacks with a shield, which reduces the damage done by each incoming swing, and more importantly, eliminates the possibility for those swings to "crush" the tank for 50% increased damage. Bear tanks lack the ability to block attacks since they cannot use shields, so they instead rely on elevated armor levels to mitigate damage. Armor is a stat present on most gear pieces, with each gear piece contributing additively to the character's total armor. The amount of armor on a gear piece scales with its
armor class
: Cloth, Leather, Mail, or Plate. Traditionally, tanks wore predominantly Plate gear for its elevated armor levels, but druids are restricted to wearing only Leather gear. To compensate for this,
multiplies the total armor on a druid's gear by 5 in order to model the immense bulk of an armored bear. The
厚皮
talent provides an additional 10% armor contribution on top of this, for a total multiplier of
5.5
x
. As a result, bears pack the most armor by far of all the tank specs, making armor the primary form of damage reduction for feral tanks. Because of this very large armor multiplier, gear pieces loaded with elevated armor levels already are
especially
valuable for bears, so be on the lookout for high armor pieces like
瑟银纹路披风
and
永固精铁指环
when building a defensive gear set.
Feral Druid tanks build Rage for generating Threat
Rage is the primary in-combat resource used by bear tanks to generate Threat. Unlike Mana, which starts high and is depleted slowly over the course of an encounter, or Energy, which regenerates rapidly on a fixed server tick and is spent immediately, Rage is
actively
generated by the player by dealing or taking damage. Therefore, Rage generation is directly tied to both the offensive and defensive stats on the tank's gear. At level 70, bears generate 10 Rage for every 1100 damage
taken from
a mob, and generate 10 Rage for every 733 damage
dealt to
a mob from auto-attacks ("white" damage). The Rage is then spent on special abilities ("yellow" damage), and it is up to the player to manage their TPS rotation so that the Rage consumption rate matches the generation rate. In order of priority, feral tanks should spend their rage first on
so that it is applied on cooldown, and then spend the remaining rage to cast either
or
as frequently as possible. If enough Rage is generated to fill every available global cooldown (GCD) with a special ability, then the remainder is dumped by turning an appropriate fraction of auto-attacks into
. One of the key skills to master as a new bear tank is learning how to manage your Rage, so that you never miss an opportunity to cast
, while also spending Rage fast enough to not cap it at the maximum value of 100 and waste potential TPS.
Viability for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
When playing a tank role, feral druids exclusively level up in 5-man dungeons, as
猎豹形态
is substantially more efficient for questing and killing mobs in the open world. Bears deal a lot less damage than cats, which makes sense since they fill a tank rather than DPS role, and also attack very slowly, both of which are poor fits for solo content. The only situation in which
can be very useful in the open world is when attempting to solo group quests by killing Elite mobs on your own. In these scenarios, the very high armor of bear tanks can allow you to outlast these hard hitting mobs while slowly chipping away at their health pool.
In dungeons on the other hand, feral tanks will be in very high demand especially at the start of TBC, since a sizable fraction of the Classic player base will be leveling in dungeons, and tanks are the hardest role to fill in a dungeon group. Unfortunately, bears struggle to hold Threat in high level dungeons because
and
are the only bear abilities that affect multiple targets at once. Mobs in 5-man dungeons are typically pulled in large packs that are damaged together using area of effect (AoE) and cleave abilities, so bears have mediocre performance in these scenarios. In contrast, Protection
圣骑士
tanks are the undisputed kings of dungeon tanking due to their wide array of AoE abilities and the scaling of their TPS with the number of mobs hitting them. Nevertheless, tanks are in such high demand that you will have zero trouble finding groups as a bear tank even if you are not the best class for the job. Skilled feral tanks can still hold aggro in a dungeon setting through judicious use of
低吼
, which forces a target to turn to you;
, which can stun enemies that are not the primary kill target; and
野性冲锋
, which allows you to intercept enemies that are running away from you.
In a raid setting, feral druids in TBC are arguably the very best tank spec in the game for single target encounters (such as boss fights). Massive armor levels allow bears to soak large damage spikes from bosses with ease. Bears can also avoid being hit entirely by dodging a majority of incoming attacks, and their Dodge levels vastly exceed the other tank specs after gearing up in raids. Finally (and perhaps most importantly for the Classic meta), feral tanks can generate the most single target threat per second (TPS)
and
damage per second (DPS) of the three tank specs by a significant margin. The DPS advantage of feral tanks is especially large when not actively tanking, as cats and bears use the exact same talent build and also share a lot of gear, making ferals excellent off-tanks (a role that flexes between DPS and tanking) in raids that use Protection
战士
tanks. For overall threat and survivability as
main
tanks, bears are competitive with Protection
战士
tanks and far better than Protection
圣骑士
tanks in Phase 1 and 2, but significantly outperform the other two classes from Phase 3 onwards on all relevant tank metrics: health pool, damage mitigation, TPS, and DPS.
In PvP, Feral is the weakest of the druid specs because it lacks the sustainability of Restoration or Balance builds. The biggest issue with feral PvP is the necessity of taking the
裂伤
talent, which excludes you from taking the
talent that is a critical cooldown for sustainable druid PvP. However, PvPing as deep Feral spec does provide a unique druid playstyle, focusing on heavy burst damage rather than long term survivability. Feral druid PvP is strongest in 2v2 arena matches when paired with a rogue partner, forming a double stealth team that aims to burst down their opponents fast enough that their poor defensive capabilities do not matter.
First Steps as a Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
When you first log in as a freshly boosted feral druid, the first thing you should do is fill out your talent tree using the 49 available talent points at level 58. The next section describes the optimal talent build to use at level 70, which you can use to plan out your talent progression. At level 58, your first priority when filling in talents is to progress far enough down the Feral tree to unlock the
裂伤
talent. Make sure to pick up
野性本能
and
野性冲锋
as a high priority when progressing down the tree, and also save 5 points outside the Feral tree that you can use in the Restoration tree to max out the
talent, which is invaluable for giving you initial Rage to cast your abilities in a dungeon pull.
After setting up your talents, the next step is to train upgrades to your talented abilities. For feral druid tanks, the abilities that need to be trained for a boosted character are:
up to Rank 4
up to Rank 2
After finishing up your talents and spells, the very next thing you should do is run the
斯坦索姆
dungeon to pick up
蛮兽神像
from
巴瑟拉斯镇长
. This is a best in slot Idol for feral tanks for the first two phases of TBC! This Idol boosts the damage of two core abilities in the TPS rotation,
and
, and has no alternatives from TBC dungeons.
Now you are ready to cross the Dark Portal into Outland. The experience gained from enemies and quests in Outland is so much larger than in Azeroth that it is a waste of time to do any leveling in the old zones. As a bear tank, you will do all of your leveling in 5-man dungeons, and the first accessible dungeon on your list is
地狱火城墙
. However, note that dungeons in
地狱火半岛
are tuned for level 60 players and the default template gear for boosted characters is very low quality, so you will not be able to survive tanking these dungeons without upgrading your gear at least partially. This is quickly remedied by quest rewards, however, as quests in
地狱火半岛
are doable by level 58 characters and reward Uncommon quality items packing massively more stats than the template gear. Good early quests to target are
魔火峡谷
for
阿迦玛甘之鬃
,
阻断援军
for
剥石者皮革护腿
,
任务:地狱岩床
for
老兵的骨帽
, and
燃烧吧,塞斯高!
for
守备官的披风
.
Once you have some starter gear from
地狱火半岛
quests, you can start chain running
地狱火城墙
for experience until you level up sufficiently to tackle more advanced dungeons like
鲜血熔炉
. Especially at the start of TBC, it should be very easy to find groups for
地狱火城墙
as a tank, so much so that you can easily start your own groups and hand pick the other members. While running this dungeon, look out for
乌索尔之爪
, which is by far the biggest early upgrade you can get and will last you for several levels. Other nice tanking upgrades to look out for in
地狱火城墙
are
莫克纳萨氏族戒指
,
诡计护腕
, and
午夜之狡诈腰带
.
Best Build for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
Standard PvE 0/44/17 Feral Druid DPS/Tank Hybrid Talent Build
This is the standard PvE build that the vast majority of feral druids should take regardless of whether they primarily tank or primarily DPS in their raid team. The build makes zero sacrifices to the PvE performance of both bear tanking and cat DPS, allowing the druid to swap between both roles seamlessly while performing optimally in each. For bear tanking specifically, the
must-have non-negotiable tanking talents
in this build are:
,
野性本能
,
野性冲锋
,
,
,
,
,
,
,
裂伤
, and
. This set of talents encompasses
critical
Threat, survivability, and utility talents, which are so impactful that a feral druid could not functionally tank any content without them. The other talents in the Feral tree either provide secondary boosts to your Threat output (
for example), or boost your survivability while tanking (
厚皮
and
for example).
You may notice that this talent build also includes the pure DPS talents
and
, which boost your raw DPS and your sustainability while powershifting, respectively. Even though these are cat DPS talents, they should also be viewed as
mandatory
for any competitive bear tank. If you will ever enter
猎豹形态
even once
in a raid environment, these talents are critical for powershifting, which is required for your DPS output to be remotely useful. Ferals who almost always tank may consider skipping these talents, but this is a
huge mistake
because
every single tanking role in a raid should be DPSing at some point
. If you are the raid's main tank, then you will be tanking "Skull" targets on trash, which means that you should be DPSing after your target is dead. There are also tank swap fights like
布鲁塔卢斯
where you are tanking only 50% of the time and should be DPSing for the other half. If you are an off-tank, there are numerous single tank boss encounters where additional tanks are not needed, so off-tanks should be DPSing on these fights.
Bear tanks receive only a single new ability while leveling from 60 to 70:
at level 66. This is a very strong bleed ability that generates a significant amount of static Threat when cast, and also applies a high DPS stackable DoT to the target. Early on, Lacerate is spammed on every available global cooldown (GCD) for maximum Threat generation. By Phase 2, it gets outscaled by
as a spammable Threat generator, but maintaining a full Lacerate stack on the target is still optimal for the entirety of TBC.
Best Quest Upgrades for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
斥候的罩帽
, Reward from
拯救孢子人
This quest is a followup to the chain starting with
暗泽部族
, and is very easy to complete. The mobs you need to kill are found all over the cave in Funggor Cavern.
稳步皮靴
, Reward from
攻陷城墙
This is a quest that you will complete "for free", as it simply requires you to clear
地狱火城墙
once and kill all the bosses.
刃拳的宽容
, Reward from
霸王
/
阿拉修斯的意图
These quests are at the tail end of a long quest chain that takes you through the majority of the leveling process in
地狱火半岛
. The final quest involves taking down an Elite mini-boss
残酷的阿拉修斯
, which requires a large group of players unless you are significantly over-leveled. Putting a group together for this quest is well worth the effort, however, as
刃拳的宽容
will last you all the way to level 70, being replaced only by trinkets from endgame dungeons. Acquiring this trinket is especially valuable for freshly boosted characters, who will not have alternative options from level 60 raids.
蛮荒神像
, Reward from
巨人的威胁
This quest should be completed at the same time as
自然的治愈
, as you will need to kill several
暴怒的巨人
mobs with your group anyway in order to clear the summoning circle. Every feral druid should complete this quest, as
蛮荒神像
is not only your sole DPS option in the Idol slot until level 70, but is also situationally best in slot for tanking on encounters where you are Rage starved and cannot sustain more than 50%
uptime.
Best Dungeon Upgrades for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
报复外衣
, Drops from
击碎者克里丹
This chest piece is a massive upgrade from any other dungeon drops in the level 60-63 range, and can even be used in level 70 pre-raid sets! The presence of gem sockets in such an early item is a big perk, since cheap gems can be purchased right away from vendors in
地狱火半岛
.
鲜血熔炉
is a very efficient leveling dungeon, so spending time here will also gain you a ton of XP.
乌索尔之爪
, Drops from
瓦兹德
乌索尔之爪
is by far the the biggest early upgrade you can get as a boosted level 58 feral druid, and will last you through multiple leveling zones. In general, weapons are the most impactful gear slot for feral druids, as they are itemized with an insane amount of Feral Attack Power and raw stats. You will notice a big power spike in your Threat output and survivability each time you get a weapon upgrade, similar to traditional melee DPS classes.
欺诈护腿
, Drops from
黑色阔步者
Similar to
乌索尔之爪
, this piece is several tiers better than any other alternatives available in this level range, and also comes with the benefit of three gem sockets that you can load with cheap vendor gems at the start and crafted Uncommon quality gems later on.
暮色隐者护肩
, Drops from
击碎者克里丹
Very strong shoulder piece for its level, and outclasses all available quest rewards in
地狱火半岛
and
赞加沼泽
.
泥沼龙虾人鳞片披风
, Drops from
巨钳鲁克玛尔
This cloak is one of the best early mitigation pieces available to feral tanks, and is particularly strong because it is loaded with armor, which scales wonderfully for bears. This is a very valuable dungeon pickup, as there are very few dedicated mitigation options in early leveling dungeons, so it will help you survive higher level dungeons.
莫克纳萨氏族戒指
, Drops from
瓦兹德
莫克纳萨氏族戒指
compliments
泥沼龙虾人鳞片披风
as one of the very few well itemized mitigation pieces from early leveling dungeons. Like the cloak, this ring is loaded with a lot of armor, which is rarely present on rings in Classic WoW, so it is perfect for bears.
