Introduction to Feral Druid DPS in Burning Crusade
Druids in World of Warcraft are shapeshifters who are deeply in tune with the natural world. Druids take the form of a variety of creatures that emphasize different qualities of nature, inheriting the strengths and abilities of these creatures. The Feral specialization is for druids who channel the ferocity and fearlessness of wild beasts, taking on the massive strength of bears or the swiftness of cats. In World of Warcraft, feral druids are unique among all other classes because they can fill both a tank role or a DPS role with the same exact specialization, simply by shifting between bear and cat forms, respectively. This guide will focus on how to play a feral druid in a DPS role, staying in
猎豹形态
to dish out lots of melee damage on your enemies.
Feral DPS Druids use Energy to deal damage
As a humanoid, druids function like every other spell caster, using Mana as a depleting resource to cast healing and damage spells. When shifting into
猎豹形态
, however, a feral druid's Mana bar turns into an Energy bar, which is a resource that is unique to cat druids and rogues. Similar to Mana, Energy is spent to cast special abilities such as
, which has a base cost of 60 Energy, and
, which costs 30 Energy. Unlike Mana, however, Energy regenerates very quickly both in and out of combat at a rage of 10 Energy per second. In Classic WoW, Energy regeneration occurs in discrete batches, with 20 Energy restored on each 2 second "tick". The maximum Energy that can obtained is 100, and additional Energy ticks do nothing beyond that limit. As a result, only 2 or 3 special abilities can be used sequentially before running out of Energy. Therefore, the core gameplay loop for feral DPS involves spending Energy on high damage abilities, and then regenerating that Energy, creating a DPS rotation that has a cyclical rhythm.
Feral DPS Druids build Combo Points for finishing moves
In addition to Energy, the second key resource that cat druids need to manage are Combo Points. Combo Points are a bridge between the two classes of special abilities that cats can use: builders and finishing moves. Combo Point builders are abilities such as
and
that are cast frequently when attacking an enemy. Each time that one of these abilities lands successfully, you are awarded 1 Combo Point. Combo Points can be stacked up to 5, and serve as a form of "currency" that is earned on a longer timescale than Energy regeneration. The points are then spent on finishing moves such as
and
, which consume all your Combo Points and deal increasing amounts of damage depending on the number of Combo Points you have built up. Generally speaking, finishing moves should only be used after accumulating 4 or 5 Combo Points, as they deal very little damage when used with fewer points. As a result, these abilities are cast infrequently in a DPS rotation, but are well worth the time spent gathering the Combo Points since they deal a substantial amount of damage.
Feral DPS Druids can convert Mana into Energy
The information in the prior sections applies identically to cat druids and rogues, since both of these classes use Energy and Combo Points as resources for timing their abilities. However, feral druids have a unique trick up their sleeves to speed up the rate at which they can deal damage. As a hybrid class that can fill multiple roles, druids possess both a Mana bar and an Energy bar, which typically operate completely independently for use in humanoid form or
猎豹形态
, respectively. In Classic WoW, however, druids are given a unique talent called
, which allows a druid to generate 40 Energy immediately upon shifting into
猎豹形态
. Therefore, when low on Energy, a cat druid can shift out of form and then back into form for a significant Energy boost, rather than waiting 4 seconds to regenerate that Energy "naturally". When done very quickly, the act of shifting out of form and back into form is called "powershifting", and is a critical component of the feral DPS toolkit. Each shapeshift costs Mana, so powershifting can be thought of as a conversion of Mana into Energy, allowing the druid to refresh their Energy supply whenever they want, so long as they have enough Mana to do so. Powershifting is
the
reason why feral DPS druids are able to keep up with other classes in damage, so it is an important technique to master as a new feral druid. Powershifting may seem intimidating at first, but is actually very simple to learn and is a
ton
of fun, since it speeds up the gameplay loop because you no longer have to idly wait for enough Energy to use an ability.
Viability for Feral Druid DPS in Burning Crusade
Feral DPS druids are fantastic solo levelers, as they can deal a lot of burst damage to mobs by spending their Energy quickly, and then regenerate that Energy passively while running to the next mob. Cats are also given the
talent, which increases their movement speed by
30%
when outdoors, making it very efficient to run from mob to mob while completing open world quests. For intermediate travel distances, druids also possess
旅行形态
for a further speed boost that can be activated instantly by shapeshifting rather than waiting to summon a mount. As melee damage dealers, cat druids do not suffer from the downtime issues faced by other specs such as Mages and Elemental Shamans, since Energy regenerates very rapidly. Furthermore, as a hybrid class, a feral druid can pop out of form when low on health and heal up to full with their extensive healing toolkit, including healing over time (HoT) spells that can be "pre-cast" prior to engaging the next mob. The Mana spent on these heals is then slowly regenerated back to full while the druid is in back in
猎豹形态
for the next killing spree. As a result, cat druids can level indefinitely with
absolutely no downtime
when killing mobs one at a time.
In contrast, cat DPS druids are very mediocre dungeon levelers, so it is recommended to either tank leveling dungeons or stick to open world leveling. The reason for this is that the entirety of a cat's damage output is
single target
, affecting only the direct target and no others. This is a very inefficient form of damage in dungeons, where mobs are pulled in large packs that are damaged together using area of effect (AoE) and cleave abilities. As a result, cat DPS will pale in comparison to other classes such as warlocks, mages, and warriors for the majority of a dungeon, and is competitive only on single target boss fights. Furthermore, since cats need to powershift continuously to keep up on damage, they can easily run out of Mana over the course of several trash pulls, forcing the group to wait or crippling their subsequent damage output.
For the same reason, cat druids are abysmal damage dealers on trash mobs in a raid setting as well, and should pretty much always be assigned to tank on trash instead. On boss fights, however, cat DPS is competitive with every other hybrid DPS spec, as long as the druid is powershifting effectively and using appropriate consumables. In TBC specifically, cat DPS is buffed quite a bit relative to vanilla due to the new spell
, which causes the druid's other damaging abilities to deal
30%
more damage. Feral druids also buff their party with the
talent, and also bring in the combat resurrection spell
, which is invaluable when progressing on a new raid boss. Nevertheless, if you are looking to top damage meters in a raid environment, cat DPS is not a great choice of spec, as it will never compete with equally skilled hunters or warlocks.
In PvP, Feral is the weakest of the druid specs because it lacks the sustainability of Restoration or Balance builds. The biggest issue with feral PvP is the necessity of taking the
裂伤
talent, which excludes you from taking the
talent that is a critical cooldown for sustainable druid PvP. However, PvPing as deep Feral spec does provide a unique druid playstyle, focusing on heavy burst damage rather than long term survivability. Feral druid PvP is strongest in 2v2 arena matches when paired with a rogue partner, forming a double stealth team that aims to burst down their opponents fast enough that their poor defensive capabilities do not matter.
First Steps as a Feral Druid DPS in Burning Crusade
When you first log in as a freshly boosted feral druid, the first thing you should do is fill out your talent tree using the 49 available talent points at level 58. The next section describes the optimal talent build to use at level 70, which you can use to plan out your talent progression. At level 58, your first priority when filling in talents is to progress far enough down the Feral tree to unlock the
裂伤
talent. Make sure to pick up
as a high priority when progressing down the tree, and also save 5 points outside the Feral tree that you can use in the Restoration tree to max out the
talent, which is essential for powershifting to work.
After setting up your talents, the next step is to train upgrades to your talented abilities. For feral DPS druids, the abilities that need to be trained for a boosted character are:
up to Rank 4
up to Rank 2
After finishing up your talents and spells, the very next thing you should do is acquire a
狼头之盔
. This is the best in slot helm for feral DPS throughout the entirety of TBC! The 20 extra energy provided by this helm on each powershift dramatically speeds up the DPS rotation by allowing you to fit an extra special ability into each 4 second powershift cycle. Thankfully, this level 40 helm is very cheap to craft, so you should be able to find one for cheap on the Auction House or at least the raw materials to get one crafted.
Now you are ready to cross the Dark Portal into Outland. The experience gained from enemies and quests in Outland is so much larger than in Azeroth that it is a waste of time to do any questing in the old zones. Note that
地狱火半岛
is tuned for level 60 players and the default template gear for boosted characters is very low quality, so it will take quite a bit longer to kill mobs during the first stretch of leveling. This is quickly remedied by quest rewards, however, as quests in
地狱火半岛
are doable by level 58 characters and reward Uncommon quality items packing massively more stats than the template gear. Good early quests to target are
寻找首领
for
执行者之链
,
燃烧吧,塞斯高!
for
守备官的披风
, and
魔火峡谷
for
阿迦玛甘之鬃
.
Once you have some starter gear from
地狱火半岛
quests, it is very beneficial to run
地狱火城墙
until you pick up
乌索尔之爪
, which is by far the biggest early upgrade you can get and will last you for several levels. Other nice upgrades to look out for in
地狱火城墙
are
诡计护腕
,
午夜之狡诈腰带
, and
绞喉项链
.
Best Build for Feral Druid DPS in Burning Crusade
Standard PvE 0/44/17 Feral Druid DPS/Tank Hybrid Talent Build
This is the standard PvE build that the vast majority of feral druids should take regardless of whether they primarily tank or primarily DPS in their raid team. The build makes zero sacrifices to the PvE performance of both bear tanking and cat DPS, allowing the druid to swap between both roles seamlessly while performing optimally in each. For feral DPS, the cornerstone of this build are the talents
,
,
裂伤
, and
. These talents are required for the DPS rotation to even work:
裂伤
provides the key damage buff for your other abilities,
lets you powershift, and
+
make your core abilities cheap enough to fit into an efficient powershift cycle. The other talents in the Feral tree either boost the raw damage output of your abilities (
and
for example), or boost your Threat and survivability while tanking (
野性本能
and
厚皮
for example). In the Restoration tree, the most critical talents after
are
, which provides the largest total damage boost of all your talents, and
, which is very important for letting you powershift sustainably.
Note that while the tanking talents in this build are not
technically
required when filling a DPS role, it is
highly
recommended that you take them, since the defining feature of feral druids is the ability to swap between tanking and DPS at will. As a result, you can use this same build for solo content in the open world, for tanking in
, and for DPSing in
猎豹形态
. In a raid setting, a good feral druid will perform both DPS
and
tanking roles depending on what is required in each encounter. A common scenario is for the feral to tank on trash and DPS on bosses that require only a single tank.
Cat druids receive only a single new ability while leveling from 60 to 70:
割碎
at level 62. This is a very strong PvP finishing move that incapacitates the target and lets the druid interrupt spell casting. It can also get you out of sticky situations when questing or farming in the open world, allowing you to incapacitate one mob while focusing damage on another.
Best Quest Upgrades for Feral Druid DPS in Burning Crusade
朝圣者腰带
, Reward from
点燃灯塔
This quest is only available to Horde druids, unfortunately, but is an important one to complete because it provides a strong DPS belt that will last you until at least level 63. This easy quest involves running by three beacons and lighting them up by right-clicking them. Make sure to run away from each beacon as soon as you light it up, as 3 mobs will spawn each time a beacon is lit.
钉皮绿色护踝
, Reward from
自然的治愈
This quest requires a group to complete, as you will be dealing with Elite mobs with a lot of HP. You will make your way to a summoning circle west of the Temple of Telhamat, where you will plant a seed that summons an elite Colossus which you must kill. Make sure to clear the area around the circle of all other Elite Colossi before you start the summon so that they don't tag along with the summoned mob. The Elites in this area are level 63-64, so bring a large group if you are attempting this quest when underleveled. If you wait until at least level 63, however, then you can actually solo the Elites in
if you leverage your healing over time spells and defensive abilities carefully.
刃拳的宽容
, Reward from
霸王
/
阿拉修斯的意图
These quests are at the tail end of a long quest chain that takes you through the majority of the leveling process in
地狱火半岛
. The final quest involves taking down an Elite mini-boss
残酷的阿拉修斯
, which requires a large group of players unless you are significantly over-leveled. Putting a group together for this quest is well worth the effort, however, as
刃拳的宽容
will last you all the way to level 70, being replaced only by trinkets from endgame dungeons. Acquiring this trinket is especially valuable for freshly boosted characters, who will not have alternative options from level 60 raids.
看守者的准确之戒
, Reward from
抽水泵结构图
This is an extremely simple quest, and just requires swimming to the entrance of Coilfang Reservoir. Be careful of the ravenous frenzy fish in the water; it is recommended to approach the reservoir from the north to avoid them.
蛮荒神像
, Reward from
巨人的威胁
This quest should be completed at the same time as
自然的治愈
, as you will need to kill several
暴怒的巨人
mobs with your group anyway in order to clear the summoning circle. Every feral druid should complete this quest, as
蛮荒神像
is your only DPS option in the Idol slot until level 70.
Best Dungeon Upgrades for Feral Druid DPS in Burning Crusade
报复外衣
, Drops from
击碎者克里丹
This chest piece is a massive upgrade from all other alternatives in the level 60-63 range, and can even be used in level 70 pre-raid sets! The presence of gem sockets in such an early item is a big perk, since cheap gems can be purchased right away from vendors in
地狱火半岛
.
鲜血熔炉
is a very efficient leveling dungeon, so spending time here will also gain you a ton of XP.
乌索尔之爪
, Drops from
瓦兹德
乌索尔之爪
is by far the the biggest early upgrade you can get as a boosted level 58 feral druid, and will last you through multiple leveling zones. In general, weapons are the most impactful gear slot for feral druids, as they are itemized with an insane amount of Feral Attack Power. You will notice a big power spike in your damage output each time you get a weapon upgrade, similar to traditional melee DPS classes.
欺诈护腿
, Drops from
黑色阔步者
Similar to
报复外衣
, this piece is several tiers better than any other alternatives available in this level range, and also comes with the benefit of three gem sockets that you can load with cheap vendor gems at the start and crafted Uncommon quality gems later on.
暮色隐者护肩
, Drops from
击碎者克里丹
Very strong shoulder piece for its level, and outclasses all available quest rewards in
地狱火半岛
and
赞加沼泽
.
