About the Author
I am an avid Classic WoW fan and theorycrafter with roots back in retail TBC. I mained a warlock during TBC and Wrath, and frequented the Elitist Jerks theorycrafting forums back then as a lurker. One of my favorite aspects of the game was the offline effort to model and understand each spec in order to optimize performance. I currently main a feral druid in Classic, and have taken a more active role in theorycrafting the spec. I create sim tools and stat weight calculators for tanking and cat DPS, and am a moderator on the
druid class Discord
where we collaborate on these tools and help out players of all skill levels (ranging from casual players to competitive speedrunners) with gearing and playstyle decisions. Feral druids are in an exciting spot in Classic for tanking especially, as the predominant meta around gearing has been reshaped by the Classic community compared to vanilla and private server expectations. I am excited to continue furthering our understanding of feral druids in TBC Classic, and we already have sim tools we're working on to that end. Come join the druid Discord if you'd like to participate!

Changes for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
Changes to existing abilities & talents
巨熊形态
—The armor multiplier from
巨熊形态
has been increased from 4.6 to 5. Additionally,
巨熊形态
now boosts total Stamina by 25% rather than adding a fixed 1240 HP. The mana cost of shapeshifting has also been reduced to 35% of base mana, compared to 55% in vanilla.
重殴
—The Threat generated by Maul (before
野性本能
) has been changed from 1.75 times the total damage dealt to just 1 times the total damage dealt plus a static 322 Threat on each successful cast. This is a massive nerf to the ability, making it function more like
英勇打击
and changing it from the highest Threat per Rage ability in vanilla to the lowest in TBC.
横扫
—The Threat modifier on Swipe was nerfed from 1.75 to 1.0, similar to Maul. However, Swipe damage now benefits from 7% of your Attack Power rather than applying a fixed amount of damage, making it finally scale with gear. The net effect of both changes is a positive one, and Swipe becomes an excellent Threat generator in cleave situations (compared to just tab + Maul in vanilla), as well as the optimal single target ability to spam on every available GCD later on into gear progression.
低吼
—In TBC, taunts are modified to use Hit Rating rather than Spell Hit Rating when determining their resist chance, but still use a 17% base resist chance compared to 9% for all other melee abilities.
树皮术
—No longer nerfs melee attack speed when active, making it a beneficial opener that can be cast prior to boss pulls with no downside.
野性本能
—Condensed from 5 talent points down to 3.
厚皮
—Condensed from 5 talent points down to 3.
豹之迅捷
—Renamed to
豹之迅捷
, and the 4% increased dodge chance now applies to
巨熊形态
as well, making it a strong avoidance talent.
血之狂暴
—This talent has been merged into
原始狂怒
, allowing feral druids to max out both the bear and cat crit talent in a single build.
野蛮暴怒
—No longer boosts
重殴
or
横扫
, which is another significant nerf to Maul Threat generation relative to vanilla.
兽群领袖
—The party aura provided by feral druids is increased from 3% to 5% crit.
武器平衡
—Merged with
强化治疗之触
and moved to the Restoration tree as the new
自然主义
talent.
自然变形
—Moved from Balance to Restoration tree.
清晰预兆
—Moved from Balance to Restoration tree, and duration increased from 10 minutes to 30 minutes.
强化狂怒
—Merged into the new cat DPS talent
强烈
.
As evidenced by the above changes, the druid talent tree has been significantly pruned down in TBC, with many talents merged together and moved closer in proximity to one another. As a result, feral druids have to make essentially zero compromises to achieve both optimal cat DPS performance and optimal bear tanking performance in a single build. However, the core mechanics of bear Threat generation have been substantially nerfed in TBC compared to vanilla, due to the changes in the
重殴
multiplier and the
野蛮暴怒
talent. The inflated modifiers were necessary in vanilla for bear Threat to keep up with warrior tanks due to the very poor itemization accessible to feral druids. In TBC, druids have access to massively better tanking gear, necessitating a nerf in the core Threat mechanics to keep TPS reasonable.
New abilities & talents
裂伤(熊)
—Highest Threat per Rage ability in TBC, used on cooldown in the PvE rotation. Also buffs
割伤
application and periodic damage by 30%.
割伤
—New bleed ability that generates a significant amount of static Threat when cast, and also applies a high DPS stackable DoT to the target. Early on, Lacerate is spammed on every available GCD for maximum Threat generation. By Phase 2, it gets outscaled by
横扫
as a spammable Threat generator, but maintaining a full Lacerate stack on the target is still optimal for the entirety of TBC.
适者生存
—Straight 3% buff to all primary stats. More importantly, the 3% crit reduction provided by this talent allows feral tanks to become uncrittable in every content phase by using just a handful of Defense and Resilience swaps in gear sets.
强化兽群领袖
—Provides periodic healing to the feral druid's physical DPS group. Adds more utility to the hybrid spec but not amazing.
狩猎天性
—Increases crit damage multiplier from 2
x
to 2.2
x
, providing a substantial TPS boost.
原始坚韧
—Provides some resistance to crowd control effects, which can be helpful when tanking 5-man dungeons.
The introduction of
裂伤(熊)
and
割伤
makes the bear Threat rotation much more dynamic and interesting than spamming Maul in vanilla, adding a cooldown to track and a DoT to monitor. The introduction of the
适者生存
talent also means that crit immunity is a very tangible goal for feral tanks, which was not possible in vanilla when wearing reasonable gear.
Viability of Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade PvE Content
Bears are exceptional tanks throughout the entirety of TBC. They have the highest effective health pool (EHP) of all three tanking specs due to amplified armor values on all feral gear and the amazing armor scaling from
巨熊形态
and
厚皮
, allowing bears to soak large damage spikes from bosses with ease. Bears also pack a ton of avoidance from Dodge due to a generous Agility-to-Dodge ratio and an abundance of Agility on leather. Finally (and perhaps most importantly for the Classic meta), feral tanks can generate the most threat per second (TPS)
and
damage per second (DPS) of the three tank specs by a significant margin. The DPS advantage of feral tanks is especially large when not actively tanking, as cats and bears use the exact same talent build and also share a lot of gear, making ferals excellent off-tanks in raids that use Protection
战士
tanks. For overall threat and survivability as
main
tanks, bears are competitive with Protection
战士
tanks and far better than Protection
圣骑士
tanks in Phase 1 and 2, but significantly outscale the other two classes from Phase 3 onwards on all relevant tank metrics: EHP, damage taken per second (DTPS), TPS, and DPS. Feral tanks are most efficiently utilized in one of two raid configurations:
(a)
Tank 1 =
Protection
战士
,
Tank 2 =
Feral
德鲁伊
,
Tank 3 =
Protection
圣骑士
; or
(b)
Tank 1
= Feral
德鲁伊
,
Tank 2
= Protection
圣骑士
,
Tank 3
= Fury
战士
. The first configuration leverages the high DPS potential of feral druids in
猎豹形态
on single-tank raid encounters, and the second configuration leverages the superior scaling of ferals as main tanks by omitting the Protection warrior entirely and using a Fury or Fury/Prot off-tank as needed. Many competitive guilds will transition from
(a)
to
(b)
in Phase 3 or 4 by having their warrior main tank swap to a DPS role.
Strengths of Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
Threat scaling
The primary reason for the dominance of bear tanks in late TBC is the superior scaling of bear Threat with gear compared to the other tank classes. Bears derive a large fraction of their TPS directly from damage done to the boss:
裂伤(熊)
and
横扫
Threat is a direct multiplier of the damage dealt by these abilities, as is the majority of
重殴
Threat (with the fixed additive Threat contributing only a minority of the total). The only bear ability with primarily static Threat is
割伤
, since both the application damage and application Threat of this ability do not scale with gear, which is why
割伤
is replaced by
横扫
in the tanking rotation after a critical gear threshold. As a result, bear TPS can scale arbitrarily high with better gear, and benefits from every single physical DPS stat in TBC:
Attack Power - Mangle, Swipe, Maul, and Lacerate DoT
Hit Rating - Mangle, Swipe, Maul, and Lacerate application
Expertise Rating - Mangle, Swipe, Maul, and Lacerate application
Critical Strike Rating - Mangle, Swipe, and Maul
Haste Rating - Maul
Armor Penetration - Mangle, Swipe, and Maul
By contrast, a large fraction of Protection
战士
Threat comes from completely static sources, such as
破甲攻击
applications and
复仇
, or from abilities with inefficient scaling, such as
盾牌猛击
which benefits only from shield block value. As a result, warrior TPS scales well only with Hit Rating and Expertise Rating, which enable more static Threat generators to land successfully, and starts to flatline above the Expertise soft cap. On the other hand, Sunwell gear for bears is loaded with high amounts of Attack Power, Haste Rating, and Armor Penetration, allowing feral druids to keep up with the insane Threat generation of late game Destruction
术士
and Fury
战士
DPS, especially when multiple
嗜血
buffs are funneled to DPS groups.
Avoidance scaling
In vanilla WoW, the only efficient sources of survivability for bears were Stamina and Armor, so bears relied almost exclusively on very high EHP for surviving boss encounters. In TBC, massive EHP levels remain a core strength of feral tanks throughout the expansion. However, EHP suffers from a major scaling issue: mitigation from armor is capped at 75% (35,880 raid buffed Armor), so EHP scaling flatlines above the armor cap. This could be a major problem for bear survivability in later tiers, as feral gear approaches the armor cap as early as Phase 1! Thankfully, TBC provides bears with a new core tanking strength unique to the class: exceptionally high avoidance scaling. Druids require only 14.7 Agility per 1% Dodge, compared to 20 for paladins and 30 for warriors. Moreover, leather gear in TBC is loaded with tons of Agility, including increasingly large amounts in each feral tier set. These two factors result in the avoidance of bear tanks skyrocketing further into the expansion, reaching over 80% in endgame tanking gear even when not specifically gearing for avoidance. In fact, Blizzard recognized the absurd avoidance scaling of feral gear later on in TBC, and introduced the
太阳之井的光辉
buff to nerf it and prevent bear tanks from being unhittable by Sunwell bosses.
Additionally, avoidance becomes the best scaling tanking stat in late TBC because it exhibits
increasing returns
similar to Armor Penetration, with each 1% Dodge providing more value than the previous. To understand this, let's assume that a boss puts out 1000 mitigated DPS and we have 0% Dodge. If we add 25% Dodge, our average DTPS changes from 1000 to 750, which is a 25% decrease in damage taken. Now let's assume that we instead started with 50% Dodge and added the same extra 25%. In this case, our average DTPS changes from 500 to 250, which is a
50%
reduction in damage taken. So the value of additional avoidance has
doubled
after we acquire substantial amounts of it from gear! Avoidance is the only tanking stat in TBC that exhibits this property, so bears not only generate the most Threat but
also
take the least damage of the tank classes at later gear levels.
Hybrid gearing and role
Strictly speaking, feral druids are the only
truly
hybrid spec in TBC, as they can perform two distinct roles (tanking and DPS) with the exact same talents without making any compromises to either role. No other class in TBC can do this, as talent trees for distinct roles are typically specialized enough that it is impossible to perform both roles optimally. In contrast, the Feral talent tree was tightly optimized in TBC, with all of the beneficial cat and bear PvE talents consolidated together such that players do not need to focus on one or the other at level 70. This means that the exact same talent build is used for main tanking, off-tanking, and cat DPS, providing feral druids with the flexibility to fill in any of these roles as needed for a given raid team. Trash packs in TBC raids typically require more tanks than boss encounters, so there are numerous single tank boss fights where off-tanks should DPS or heal instead. Protection
战士
and Protection
圣骑士
tanks struggle to do this efficiently, as their DPS output is extremely lackluster. Ferals excel in this role since cat DPS, although not competitive with top DPS classes, is still very respectable and surpasses a number of other utility specs.
Playing a hybrid role in raids is especially efficient for ferals because a lot of the best tanking leather is also best in slot or close for DPS. For example,
玛洛恩衬肩
and
玛洛恩胸甲
are both cat and bear BiS in Phase 1, so prioritizing these pieces to feral off-tanks is a no-brainer as they get twice the value from them. More generally, Agility is the highest value stat for both DPS and tanking, as it provides AP and Crit in
猎豹形态
, but also provides Crit and Dodge in
巨熊形态
. As such, DPS gear such as
暗影主宰之靴
and
硬化氪金指环
also doubles as strong Threat + Dodge pieces when tanking, especially in later phases when the tanking value of avoidance skyrockets due to its increasing returns ( see above). This is especially useful on boss fights where the druid is tanking only some of the time, such as the
布鲁塔卢斯
encounter where periodic taunt swaps between two tanks are required due to a stacking debuff mechanic. In these situations, the feral tank can wear optimal tank gear for the encounter but simply swap in
狼头之盔
to put out quite respectable DPS when not tanking.
Weaknesses of Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
Lack of defensive cooldowns
During the early stages of progression in a raid tier, especially when tanks are relatively under-geared, strong defensive cooldowns such as
破釜沉舟
and
盾墙
are very helpful for easing the tank healing burden while the raid learns boss mechanics. Even when bosses are on farm, these abilities can function as "bad luck protection" to prevent tank deaths in cases with unlucky damage streams such as repeated boss parries. Druid tanks unfortunately lack any such tools and their survivability is entirely passive, relying on high EHP levels to provide a buffer against damage spikes. Technically, druids have two defensive cooldowns in
树皮术
and
狂暴回复
. However,
树皮术
can only be cast in caster form and incurs a GCD, so it is effectively useless as a reactive tool when tanking in raids, and is only used at the start of a pull to reduce initial tank damage. In the case of
狂暴回复
, the ability was massively undertuned, and the health regeneration it supplies is negligible relative to incoming damage and tank health pools in TBC. Moreover, healing over time (HoT) spells only provide value when cast preemptively before
smooth
damage streams where individual HoT ticks provide full value, whereas most emergency scenarios for tanks involve large damage spikes in a short period of time that require
burst
healing.
Bear tanks can compensate for their lack of innate defensive cooldowns by leveraging consumables and on-use trinkets in emergencies instead. As a replacement for
破釜沉舟
, bears can use
梦魇草
to provide a significant HP boost to buffer damage spikes. In later phases,
梦魇草
is supplemented by trinkets such as
影月徽记
or
坚硬的纳鲁薄片
, providing multiple cooldowns to use in response to damage bursts. For temporary damage reduction, nothing comes close to
盾墙
, but druids can approximate its effect by leveraging on-use avoidance trinkets such as
莫罗斯的幸运怀表
and
坚韧徽章
, which provide temporary 16% and 11% dodge boosts, respectively, when raid buffed. Bears can achieve over 70% passive raid buffed avoidance in balanced Phase 3 gear, so
坚韧徽章
would provide over
37%
overall physical damage reduction when used due to the increasing returns of avoidance. For defensive late game gear sets, the combination of
影月徽记
and
坚韧徽章
is often optimal for overall value, giving the druid tank both a health cooldown and a mitigation cooldown together.
Spiky damage intake
The high armor and high avoidance of feral tanks results in very low average DTPS, surpassing both warriors and paladins for damage reduction later on in the expansion. This comes at a cost, however, as damage intake for bears has the highest
variance
of the tank specs, resulting in a spiky health profile when tanking hard hitting raid bosses. Two factors contribute to the high variance of bear DTPS: First, bears lack any tools for reducing their chance to be crushed, whereas warriors and paladins leverage
盾牌格挡
and
神圣之盾
, respectively, to achieve complete crush immunity. As a result, bear tanks must deal with the full 15% chance to be crushed for 50% more damage, and are susceptible to unlucky streams of multiple crushing blows in a row. Second, the very high avoidance levels of feral tanks inherently results in more damage variance, since only a minority of incoming boss swings actually land. For example, a bear with 75% avoidance might stay at full health for many seconds by dodging every boss swing, but then can briefly dip very low if a few attacks are unavoided. Moreover, when avoidance levels get that high, the majority of boss attacks that
do
land are crushing blows due to the single roll melee attack table used in Classic WoW. For example, at 75% avoidance, 60% of boss hits that connect are crushes, and at 85% avoidance, every single hit taken is a crushing blow if the tank is crit immune. This places a demand on healers to react quickly to damage spikes when a bear is tanking.
Mediocre AOE tanking
TBC dungeons and raids often feature large trash packs that are handled primarily by classes with AOE damage output, especially warlocks with
腐蚀之种
. In order for this to work, the tank must be able to hold Threat on the full mob pack, as most mobs in Heroic dungeons and raids will one-shot caster DPS that pull aggro from burst AOE damage. Despite their amazing single target threat generation, feral tanks struggle to hold several mobs simultaneously, as
横扫
and
挫志咆哮
are the only multi-target abilities in the bear toolkit. Bear threat in cleave situations
is
significantly improved in TBC compared to vanilla, however, as
横扫
now scales with Attack Power and becomes the premier threat ability for multi-mob tanking. Unfortunately, Swipe spam with tab-target Mauls is not enough TPS for a single feral tank to hold large packs for a significant period of time. In a raid environment, this deficiency hardly matters, as almost every raid team will use a Protection
圣骑士
precisely to fill this AOE tanking niche. In dungeons, skilled feral tanks can use a combination of
低吼
and
猛击
to keep multi-mob packs under control just fine, but this requires some finesse and has a much higher skill cap than single target tanking.
Class Mechanics for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
EHP
Effective health pool, or EHP, is one of the primary metrics by which to measure the "tankiness" of a character. EHP tracks the
worst case survivability
of a tank, and is most relevant when tanking hard hitting bosses with slow swing timers. Specifically, a tank's EHP divided by the largest hit they might receive from a boss tells us the maximum number of worst case hits that can be soaked without heals before the tank dies. For example, let's suppose a bear with 67,500 EHP is tanking
空灵机甲
, whose melee swing hits for a maximum of around 15,000 unmitigated damage. If the bear is uncrittable via a combination of Defense and Resilience, then the worst case possible damage stream is repeated crushing blows, each hitting for 22,500 unmitigated damage. The EHP number thus tells us that the tank can survive a maximum of 3 sequential crushing blows before dying. EHP is an important metric to optimize as a tank because it provides buffer room against bad luck, giving healers time to react and keep the tank alive.
EHP is calculated as:
H / (1 - r)
, where
H
is the total raid buffed HP of the tank, and
r
is their fractional damage mitigation from armor. For example, an armor capped bear (35,880 raid buffed armor) has the maximum damage mitigation of 75%, or
r = 0.75
. The relationship between damage mitigation and armor is
r = A / (A + 11960)
, where
A
is the fully raid buffed armor value in
巨熊形态
. In these formulas, we see that the only stats that can increase the worst case EHP of a tank are Stamina and Armor (from both gear and Agility), which makes sense because avoidance stats are irrelevant when considering the worst case outcome where none of the hits are avoided. Due to the extremely high armor values on Tier 4 feral gear, bears will have the highest EHP of the tank specs as early as Phase 1, but the hard armor cap of 35,880 limits the rate at which EHP can scale in later phases.
Avoidance
In addition to armor, which reduces the damage dealt by each boss swing, the other key way to reduce a tank's DTPS is by reducing the fraction of swings that land successfully. In Classic WoW, there are three ways for an attempted melee attack to be unsuccessful: the attacker can miss the target entirely, the target can dodge the blow, or the target can parry the attack. A tank's
total avoidance
is defined as the sum of these Miss, Dodge, and Parry stats when raid buffed. Bear tanks cannot parry unlike warriors and paladins, so only Miss and Dodge apply when optimizing avoidance.
A level 73 raid boss has a base 4.4% change to miss a level 70 player with no Defense Rating. The only way to increase this further from gear is via additional Defense; each point of Defense Rating increases the boss miss chance by 0.0169%. The other way to significantly increase boss miss chance is via the raid debuffs
虫群
and
毒蝎钉刺
, which increase Miss by 2% and 5%, respectively. These debuffs are tremendously impactful when the tank already has a lot of base avoidance, which is especially the case for feral tanks in later phases, so it is worth lobbying for a Balance
德鲁伊
and Survival
猎人
to keep them up.
Raid buffed feral druids in
纳克萨玛斯
gear will have around a 35% change to dodge melee attacks from a raid boss, which then increases dramatically with every raid tier. Dodge chance can be enhanced by three stats: Defense Rating, Dodge Rating, and Agility. Each point of Defense Rating provides 0.0169% Dodge (in addition to its effect on Miss), each point in Dodge Rating provides 0.0528% Dodge, and each point in Agility provides 0.0678% Dodge. The
豹之迅捷
talent provides an additional 4% Dodge on top of this.
When gearing as a feral tank, you will need to choose how much to prioritize avoidance relative to EHP. When skewing towards more EHP, Stamina gems and high armor pieces will be used in a majority of slots. When skewing towards more avoidance, Agility will be gemmed almost exclusively. Ferals in an off-tank role will naturally skew more towards avoidance than main tanks, since there is a large overlap between avoidance gear and cat DPS gear that the off-tank will use on many encounters.
Crit Immunity
Raid bosses have a 5.6% to crit when attacking a level 70 tank, which is reduced to 2.6% for feral druids via the mandatory talent
适者生存
. Critical strikes deal twice the damage of a normal swing, compared to crushing blows which deal 50% more damage. As such, crits are 33% more dangerous than crushes and can often lead to tank deaths when they occur in proximity to other damage spikes. Unlike crushing blows, which have a 15% chance to occur regardless of the druid's gear, the probability of receiving a critical strike can be reduced to 0 via two key stats: Defense Rating and Resilience Rating. Each point in Defense Rating reduces the boss crit chance by 0.0169% (in addition to its effect on Miss and Dodge) up to a cap of 154 if no Resilience Rating is used. Each point in Resilience Rating reduces the boss crit chance by 0.0254%, or 1.5 times as much as Defense Rating, up to a cap of 103 if no Defense Rating is used. Any combination of Defense and Resilience can be used in a gear set to guarantee crit immunity, and optimized gear sets will always use a mix of both based on the other stats present on the Defense/Resilience gear options. Resilience is much more efficient than Defense just for reaching uncrittability, but Defense also increases total avoidance.
Whether or not to gear for crit immunity is a situational question that will vary on a case by case basis. The basic rule of thumb is: if the mobs or bosses in the dungeon/raid hit hard enough that a crit plus crush combo could kill you or get close, then crit immunity is very valuable and worth optimizing for in a gear set. If incoming damage levels are low enough that you can safely soak a crit, then uncrittability is not necessary and the associated gear pieces can be substituted with Threat gear instead. It is important to be consistent in your gearing choices: aiming for crit immunity in a set that is skewed towards high Threat doesn't make any sense, because using "squishier" Threat gear already implies that the boss doesn't hit very hard, so crits should be a nonissue.
Threat
In addition to gearing for survivability and reducing damage taken in an encounter, the second key responsibility of a tank is to keep the mob's attention (or aggro) away from DPS and healers. World of Warcraft uses a Threat value for each player on a given mob to determine which player has aggro and takes hits from the mob. Maintaining higher Threat than all of the DPS in the raid is just as important as survivability, especially in the Classic WoW meta where DPS has been tightly optimized compared to original TBC, and the output of warlocks and Fury warriors in particular can be capped by the tank's Threat ceiling.
Bear tanks generate Threat primarily by dealing damage, since the Threat value of the key bear abilities
裂伤(熊)
,
横扫
, and
重殴
is tied directly to their damage. This means that a balanced tanking set needs to value DPS stats (such as Attack Power, Crit, Hit, Expertise, and Armor Penetration) on an equal playing field to defensive stats such as Stamina and Dodge. The balance between DPS stats and tank stats in a gear set is very situational and depends on the damage profile of the encounter as well as the Threat ceiling needed for a particular raid team to perform. In addition to balanced gear choices, feral tanks should also be placed in an optimized raid group with an Enhancement shaman, 2 Beast Mastery hunters, and a Fury Warrior, as the Attack Power and total damage buffs provided by these classes are a tremendous boost to a bear's threat per second (TPS). An optimized group for the tank is especially important in raids that will funnel multiple
嗜血
buffs to a warlock group, as the inflated DPS levels of a permanently hasted warlock require very high TPS from the tank even
after
factoring in
灵魂碎裂
. Finally, high DPS groups should set up
误导
rotations among all the hunters in raid in order to boost the tank's Threat "for free" periodically.
Rage
Rage is the primary in-combat resource used by bear tanks to generate Threat. Unlike Mana, which starts high and is depleted slowly over the course of an encounter, or Energy, which regenerates rapidly on a fixed server tick and is spent immediately, Rage is
actively
generated by the player by dealing or taking damage. Therefore, Rage generation is directly tied to both the offensive and defensive stats on the tank's gear. At level 70, bears generate 10 Rage for every 1100 damage
taken from
a mob, and generate 10 Rage for every 733 damage
dealt to
a mob from auto-attacks (white damage). The Rage is then spent on special abilities (yellow damage), and it is up to the player to manage the TPS rotation so that the Rage consumption rate matches the generation rate. In order of priority, feral tanks should spend their rage first on
裂伤(熊)
so that it is applied on cooldown, and then spend the remaining rage to cast either
割伤
or
横扫
as frequently as possible. If enough Rage is generated to fill every available GCD with a special ability, then the remainder is dumped by turning an appropriate fraction of auto-attacks into
重殴
. Since a sizable fraction of Rage generation comes from
incoming
damage, mitigation stats such as Armor and Dodge actually have a negative impact on bear TPS, as they reduce the Rage that is available for casting Threat generating abilities. Because of this, it is detrimental to wear too much mitigation for an encounter beyond what is needed to comfortably survive. As an extreme example, a 100% avoidance set (which is actually achievable for bears with Sunwell gear) might be really fun to play around with, but will be horrendous for TPS since there is 0 incoming Rage.

is a helpful racial ability for tanking, as it augments the already high avoidance levels of bear tanks. None of the other Night Elf racial abilities are relevant for tanking in a PvE environment, as there are no nature resistance fights in TBC raids so
自然抗性
doesn't add any value, and
影遁
is a PvP / open world ability.
Horde Races for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
牛头人
栽培
: Herbalism skill increased by 15.
耐久
: Total Health increased by 5%.
自然抗性
: Nature Resistance increased by 10.
战争践踏
: Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yds for 2 sec.
耐久
is an amazing tanking racial, as it scales multiplicatively with the already high health pool of bear tanks. Since
耐久
multiplies total health and not just Stamina, it scales with every source of increased health from consumables and raid buffs, including flat health buffs like
命令怒吼
and
强固合剂
.
Specializations for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
Feral druids specialize deep into the feral tree, with only a limited number of talent points spent elsewhere. This section will describe the overall benefits of each tree in the context of tanking.
Balance
The optimal PvE talent build for feral druids does not take any points in the Balance tree. This contrasts with vanilla, where a typical hybrid feral DPS spec was 14/32/5, with 14 points taken in Balance for
武器平衡
,
自然变形
, and
清晰预兆
. In TBC, all three of these powerful talents were moved to the Restoration tree, making Balance effectively useless for an optimized feral PvE build. For a PvP focused feral druid, just a single point in Balance is taken for
自然之握
.
Feral
The overwhelming majority of useful talents for feral druid tanking and DPS are found in the Feral tree. The TBC Feral tree is tightly optimized with lots of overlapping cat and bear talents, so the exact same build can be used for both roles without making any compromises. For tanking specifically, the most important mandatory talents are
凶暴
,
野性本能
,
野性冲锋
,
锋利兽爪
,
猛兽攻击
,
野性之心
,
适者生存
,
兽群领袖
,
狩猎天性
, and
裂伤
. The presence of so many highly impactful talents deep into the Feral tree constrains any feral talent build to invest heavily in this tree rather than hybridizing. Lower impact tanking talents are
厚皮
(since feral gear approaches the armor cap even without this talent),
豹之迅捷
,
原始狂怒
, and
强化兽群领袖
. Technically,
精灵之火(野性)
can be omitted if a Balance or Restoration druid is consistently present in the raid group, but it is recommended not to skip it.
For a PvP focused feral druid,
野蛮冲撞
,
治愈本能
, and
原始坚韧
are important talents to take which aren't high impact for PvE tanking. Note that even a PvP feral build needs to heavily invest in the Feral tree in order to pick up
裂伤
. As a result, the popular
野性之心
+
自然迅捷
hybrid feral build from vanilla is not used in TBC due to the importance of Mangle.
Restoration
The Restoration tree contains a number of valuable talents for feral tanking: The straight 10% total damage boost from
自然主义
is mandatory and worth many other talents combined. In addition,
激怒
and
强烈
provide guaranteed sources of Rage at the start of a pull, which is very useful to generate snap Threat from a Mangle + Maul opener. Finally,
清晰预兆
is also a great tanking talent, as free Swipe or Lacerate casts from Omen procs translate directly to more auto-attacks that can be turned into Mauls.
Best PvE Spec for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
The best PvE talent build for feral druids is
0/44/17
, and is optimized for both tanking and DPS simultaneously without compromising on either front. This build takes every single Feral talent except for
野性侵略
, which is not needed since
强化挫志怒吼
from warriors is strictly superior and should be used instead, as well as
野蛮冲撞
,
治愈本能
, and
原始坚韧
, which are not high impact for PvE tanking. Every other talent in the Feral tree provides either DPS or tanking value and should be taken for PvE, since one of the primary benefits of feral druids in TBC raids is the ability to perform either role equally well. The most important talents for tanking specifically are listed in the "Feral" section above. However, there really isn't much of a choice between these talents regardless, since 41 points are required to pick up
裂伤
and the ideal build contains only 3 additional points beyond that.
In the Restoration tree, this build takes
激怒
,
自然主义
,
自然变形
,
强烈
, and
清晰预兆
. These talents encompass everything in the Restoration tree that would be beneficial for feral tanking and DPS, and can be acquired without wasting points on any "pure" Restoration talents.
This build lacks a single talent that doesn't directly benefit the PvE performance of a feral druid, which is a testament to how tightly optimized the druid talent trees are in TBC compared to vanilla. Additionally, almost all of the key bear talents are also key cat talents:
凶暴
,
裂伤
,
锋利兽爪
,
猛兽攻击
,
野性之心
,
适者生存
,
兽群领袖
,
狩猎天性
, and
原始狂怒
.
Best Professions for Feral Druid Tank in Burning Crusade
In this section, recommended professions are divided into two categories: (1) professions which are valuable for the entirety of TBC, and (2) professions which
become
valuable in later phases. It is important to stress that in TBC, none of the personal profession benefits for feral druids are so overpowered that you can't compete successfully without them. So don't stress out about picking the absolute optimal profession choice, as all of the options listed below are perfectly fine even at a high level of play.
Best Consistently Valuable Professions
Engineering
Pending additional changes to how
战斗之鼓
are implemented, feral druids will be exempt from taking Leatherworking during the initial phases of TBC. The planned addition of a
耳鸣
debuff to TBC Classic means that each party can only benefit from a single Leatherworker, since the maximum achievable drum uptime will be 25% with the debuff in place. Feral druids are the worst choice of drummer in a physical DPS group, as the early version of the drums have a cast time and cannot be used while shapeshifted, making them completely unusable when tanking since the tank can never leave
巨熊形态
. As such, the best possible use of that available cooldown in a raid environment would be
超级神风炸药
from Engineering. Especially in a speedrun environment, sappers are a strong Threat cooldown on AOE trash packs, and partially compensate for the lack of many AOE abilities in the feral toolkit. In addition,
侏儒作战小鸡
scales to level 70, and the expanded buff cap in TBC makes stacking of
作战鸣叫
buffs even more desirable than it is in Classic currently. TBC also adds the
侏儒喷火炮台
consumable to the Engineering toolkit, which is reported to add an extra 40 single target DPS while active, and much more than that in cleave scenarios. The combination of sappers, flame turrets, and the battle chicken make Engineering easily the highest overall raid value profession early on. For gearing, Engineering also offers Stamina trinkets for both specializations,
地精火箭发射器
and
侏儒变鸡器
, which are the highest EHP trinkets available in Phase 1.
Enchanting
Enchanting is required for the exclusive ring enchants
附魔戒指 - 打击
and
附魔戒指 - 属性
. These enchants are the highest overall value add from a profession in TBC, as they are relevant across all content phases and effectively turn a Phase 1 quality ring into a Phase 2 quality ring. In retail TBC, these enchants remained active after dropping the profession, so the
optimal
strategy was to relevel and drop Enchanting each time you got a ring upgrade. For TBC Classic, however, Blizzard has implemented a change which requires the Enchanting profession to be permanently maintained in order for the ring enchants to work.
Best Late Game Profession Swaps
Leatherworking
Pending additional changes to how
战斗之鼓
are implemented, Phase 4 of TBC Classic marks the introduction of
强效战斗之鼓
, which can be used while shapeshifted without a cast time. Therefore, feral druids can use these new drums efficiently, and are thus viable candidates for the single Leatherworker that is required in each party (due to the
耳鸣
debuff). In their final form, drums are by far the highest raid DPS consumable in TBC, so one member in each party should absolutely take Leatherworking to use them at their maximum uptime of 25%. Drums also scale multiplicatively with
嗜血
, making them an excellent Threat consumable if the tank is placed in a hasted group. Feral druids should coordinate with their raid team to determine whether they should swap to Leatherworking in Phase 4 to be their group's designated drummer. Leatherworking is also required to craft
自然优雅之靴
, which are a best in slot boots option for tanks in Phase 2.
Jewelcrafting
Early on in TBC, Jewelcrafting is a fairly mediocre profession from a min-max point of view, as it offers only a handful of unique gems and a few on-use trinkets which do not compete with Phase 1 alternatives. In Sunwell, however, Jewelcrafters can craft the BoP necklace
硬化氪金项链
, which is a best in slot piece for Threat skewed gear sets.
