What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. For more information on available Essences and the drop locations for each rank, see our
Heart of Azeroth Essences Overview Guide
.
Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any
type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our
Essence Calculator
.

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Havoc Demon Hunter Essence Simulations
We have comparative simulations for each of the different Major and Minor essence powers, courtesy of SimulationCraft, Bloodmallet, and other class tools. Don't forget that this is simply an overview; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
.
Again, this is simply an overview. Certain Essences, such as Worldvein minor, may be worse in practice on encounters with heavy movement or when you are the only player in your group using it. Reference the Essence notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of each individual power.
Best Havoc Demon Hunter Major Essences

Worldvein Resonance -
Quite a nice minor, every once in a while (18-25 / 1-25 @ Rank 3) a lifeblood shard will erupt from the ground nearby granting you a stacking agility buff that will last for a short duration. The proc rate on the shards is high enough however to ensure that the buff will remain fully stacked for a majority of the encounter.

or
.
Rank 2:
Combine

Use on: All situations.
Extremely strong passive essence. Your spells will now have a chance to refund 50% of their cost. No matter what talent build Havoc is extremely aggressive in its use of Fury and making your spell have a chance to refund half of their cost is very welcome, and what's even better, the math confirms this minor essence to be amongst the top choices.
Drop Location: Nazjatar Questing

Obtain Rustbolt Resistance reputation Exalted and buy it from the Quartermaster for an unknown number of
and

Essence of the Focusing Iris -
Your spells and abilities will now grant you a stacking haste buff which is quite nice. Theirs a catch, however, changing targets will reset your stacks making this minor essence less than ideal is many many situations.

Rank 4:
Mythic: N'zoth

Blood of the Enemy -
Similar issues to the major effect of this essence. The minor suffers from a large ramp up and a very short window of use before having to start the cycle all over again making this essence not exactly desirable.
Drop Location: Battlegrounds
Rank 1:
Complete the quest
from the War Coordinator NPC near your faction's War Chest.
Rank 2:
Complete the
and obtain it from the War Coordinator NPC.
Rank 3:
Complete the
and obtain it from the War Coordinator NPC.
Rank 4:
Obtain the achievement
.
Unbound Force -
Same issue as Bloof of the Enemy, high ramp-up time, low opportunity window making this essence really hard to utilize optimally.
Drop Location: Nazjatar Reputation
Rank 1:
Obtain Ankoan / Unshackled reputation Honored and buy it from the Quartermaster for 10
.
Rank 2:
Obtain Ankoan / Unshackled reputation Revered and buy it from the Quartermaster for 25

Obtain Ankoan / Unshackled reputation Exalted and buy it from the Quartermaster for 50

Vision of Perfection -
As amazing as the major effect of this essence is sadly the minor is quite weak. Reducing the cooldown of
creates issues when trying to stack trinkets and other cooldowns with
resulting in the minor effect being very weak.

Rank 1:
Defeat King Mechagon in Operation: Mechagon.
Rank 2:
Obtain the

Rank 3:
Combine 4
from King Mechagon.

Ripple in Space -
Virtually useless minor, movement speed on one of the fastest spec out there and a quite small agility buff as a reward for moving when bosses are kept stationary a vast majority of the time.

Rank 1:
Complete the Quest
or
in Nazjatar.
Rank 2:
Complete the achievement
.
Rank 3:
Collect
from Weekly Call to Arms quests.

Guide says that at Heart level 50 you can socket your first essence. However, this is available at Heart level 35.
Also, only seeing Top Tier essences, there's no Mid Tier or Situational tabs on the essence guide (yet).

I see the potential in the Worldvein, but I don't see anyone using it, nor the other guides putting it in high recommendation, guess it's a no go.

Thank you for a clearly written unambiguous guide. It's easy to read as well, which is unusual. Great work.

Why is Crucible of flame put in opposition to breath of the dying? why can't we or shouldn't we equip both?

Is actually called "Spark of Inspiration". Seems the writer of this guide hasn't taken any time to look at this power at all. :/
