Holy Paladin Azerite Power Overview
Helms, Shoulders, and Chests can interact with your
, granting you Azerite Powers. These powers can modify existing spells, provide buffs, deal damage or healing, as well as other effects.
Season 2 Changes
With the start of Season 2 and the coming of Battle of Dazar'alor, pieces that previously had four rings will now have five. This new ring comes before the Ring 1 and offer two different spec traits for each specialization. Note that Items from Uldir weren't updated with this change.
The powers below are divided into four rings where they can be found in your Azerite gear:
Ring 0
contains Spec powers and is the first section available on each item and will likely be available to select as soon as you acquire a given piece of gear, contain traits based on your class specs. This ring is a new feature, found on Armor starting with
Season 2
, and requires only
15 levels
on your Heart of Azeroth to be unlocked regardless of the gear.
Ring 1
contains Spec/Zone powers and is the second section available on each item and will likely be available to select as soon as you acquire a given piece of gear, contain traits based on your class specs and source of the trait.
Ring 2
contain Role powers, based on the roles your class can perform. It is only found on epic-level gear (340 or higher). Lower-level armor won't have this ring.
Ring 3
contains Defensive/Utility powers and is the last set of choices available in the piece;
Final Ring
always has
, which increases the item level of the armor piece it is in by 5 item level. The effect, in turn, increases the power from all previous rings.
Based on simulations, logs, and analysis we have selected the best Azerite Powers, which should generally be prioritized. Keep in mind that the strength of Azerite Powers is based on the source item's item level, which can weight their value. This scaling will typically make a higher item level piece of gear better, even if it has less ideal traits.
Keep in mind that tuning is subject to change, and power value is dependent on item level, so your own individual gear, talents, and options available to you can lead to different results. When in doubt, you can always sim your own character using
Raidbots
!
Below are most of the useful Azerite traits you can expect to see on gear, there are literally hundreds of traits, so not all of them will be listed but all of the important ones either for being good choices, or for being weak choices you should avoid are listed below. There are some traits that are clearly not designed for healers to take (and provide zero benefit) and of course should be avoided as a Holy Paladin. I will also organize them into a Class system so you can know which traits are really good, and which ones you should avoid!
Glimmer of Light Build
As time has gone on the "Glimmer" build has proven to be the superior choice in nearly all content. As such I recommend switching to it as soon as you can. Check out our guide for it
Here!
If you are sticking to the standard play style read the rest of the guide below!
The class system will look something like this.
Class S:: Traits that are insanely good, or provide your class with some meaningful gameplay change. These are the best traits you can get on their row!
Class A:: Traits that are all around solid, they aren't as good as the S class, but are still good and will always be useful.
Class B:: Traits that have some kind of Niche that may make them useable, but for the most part will be sub-par.
There are a ton of traits that are exclusive to early pieces of gear, thus will get outscaled quickly as they are just ona low item level base. So the below list covers most of the traits you will see in raiding/mythic+
Ring 1
Class S:
In the pre-patch you will still be looking to stack 3 of these traits. Getting 3 of this trait will be your first priority.
You will still want at least one of this trait, the increased wings duration will be invaluable. Additionally it will provide some free damage for you in the pre-patch!
Is a solid option, although it is a lot less exciting than others it provides a solid amount of secondary stats. I would not sacrifice either of the above traits for this though.
: This trait is still valuable, however is a lot less effective as now you can use your Holy Power on
or
. If you are using many
's however this trait is extremely valuable.
: With
being more accessible this trait is a solid alternative after you have collected 3 azerite pieces.
Class A:
: This trait is just all around solid,
is a part of our core rotation, and this makes it just a little bit stronger. It isn't exceptionally good from a numbers perspective but isn't a bad trait to have by any means. The only downside to this trait is that it relies on
to crit, which depending on your gear may happen frequent enough to be valuable, or not as often as you may like. This unreliability is generally why this trait is less powerful.
/
are both solid, they gives a decent crit proc but proc's in general are unreliable. Better than a lot of the extremely weak traits we have access to however.
,
Both give mastery and similar to other traits, aren't bad but aren't great and should be taken over all of the below traits, but are not better than the S class traits.
: This one isn't as big as the other ones, but is still a nice little boost of mastery when we need it. The most attractive part of this trait is that it will work for all Paladin Specializations.
: This trait is a passable trait, it is sort of low on the numbers side, and you will primarily be using it on
. But has the versatility of giving mana back when you don't need the healing. That being said however it is still unreliable as similar to
it relies on crit to be effective, something which depending on your gear may not be reliable enough.
Class B:
This trait has decent potential but often times requires unnecessary movement which makes it sub-optimal.
: This trait isn't ideal for raiding, as you want to limit the amount of time you spend directly healing your
. However, it can be *somewhat* useful in dungeons as you are more likely to be using
which means you can reliably take advantage of it more often. Overall almost anything else is better, and you should try to avoid this trait, if you are forced into using it try to replace it with a compareable piece as soon as possible.
Ring 2
Class S:
This trait is exceptionally good, mastery isn't necessarily our best stat. However leech is incredibly valuable, and given the generally low impact of traits on this ring, that value from the leech helps it stand out.
: This trait is one of the better ones, it proc's very reliable and is most likely to save a life, while still being tuned to be competitive. You can't go wrong with this one.
+
: Both of these are just passive stat bonuses, which is never a bad thing.
: This is another solid option, its not exceptional even with the new 50% trigger. But it can have the most impact of any trait if it is procing frequently.
It's free primary stats but has a variance on it being a high value, then a low value and isn't a large amount of primary at that.
: This one is just a free passive HoT, not bad but not exceptional either. Can't go wrong with a free HoT though.
Class A:
: This trait is a very solid option, as we will be casting
very frequently this buff will be reliably procing. We also generally pair
with a Light of Dawn making the Mastery even more effective.
: This trait is a decent option, it gives us some free haste on occasion, but isn't necessarily reliable and having an RNG haste proc isn't always going to be useful. But it will be useful in all forms of content so shouldn't be ignored.
This one can be un-reliable in some circumstances. Its a bit more RNG than the rest, but when its good it pays off.
Class B:
: This trait can be useful, it provides a nice amount of mana, and you can reliably proc it in dungeons. That being said however in dungeons you can generally just drink to regen mana. In raids it provides a nice little chunk of mana, however unless you can proc it multiple times in a fight wont be meaningful enough to matter. You will generally choose most other traits over this one.
: This one is not great, it requires you to constantly be healing the same target which isn't usually ideal. Healing generally involves healing multiple people in quick succession. But for those scenarios where you will be healing a single target quite a bit, or in mythic+ or smaller group content can still be decent.
it's free haste but ultimately won't be reliable.
Ring 3
Class S:
: Some free healing whenever you take damage, its not much but it adds up. Particularly on encounters with passive raid damage.
: This can make Divine Shield a nice little raid cooldown if your raid is stacked, an excellent choice in larger group content such as mythic raids. Not as great in PvP or mythic+ however.
: A free absorb, this can be useful just to mitigate large hits that happen often. Its free absorbs!
This one can add up to a ton of healing on specific encounters, it also does not require you to hit the mobs, only be in combat with them! The additional speed can be handy, but isn't too important.
Class A:
: If you can reliably stay away from enemies (which is not necessarily ideal as a paladin particularly) this trait can add up to a nice amount of healing. However you can generally find a better trait such as all of the S class traits, as such it is a tier below the rest.
: Reduces the cooldown of
slightly and gives anyone near you some movement speed. It's a nice little thing but more often than not you will choose something that gives you a healing gain as opposed to the very small mobility increase this provides.
: Some movement speed, which is great since the sooner you get where you are going the sooner you can begin casting again!
: This trait is *somewhat* useful, but it restricts you to attempting to use it primarily on the tank, as it provides them with the armor buff lasting a fair amount of time. For the most part it is nice to keep
available for emergency situations on anyone. That being said it is one of the better traits as there isn't exactly a large pool of great defensive traits.
Useful Gear Pieces!
Below are some suggestions of solid pieces to look out for, unfortunately no "perfect" setup exists and you will have to make some sacrifices along the way in terms of Defensive/Utility traits.
Helm:
: This piece is from the Azerite Vendor, as such you will need to use your
on it.
: This piece is going to be your chase azerite from N'zoth it is a higher item level than the rest of the azerite from comparable content and ilvl is very important for glimmer of light scaling.
: This also comes from
.
: These are only attainable by being an Engineer, but are a very good option.
Shoulders:
: Come from the Azerite Vendor, purchased with
. They are a good option but remember that using 2x
won't work, so don't double up if you have this trait elsewhere!
: drop from
this is a lower item level option, but unfortunately there arent too many great shoulders out there for Glimmer.
Chest:
: Is recieved from the Azerite Vendor with
. This chest plate is a very good option, providing you with an extra
, or
if you do not need the range extension.
: This is going to be your best option for a chest it has amazing traits on each row.
: Yet again comes rom the Azerite Vendor with
. This piece is bolstered by having excellent utility traits, and complimented by
.
What to Spend Residuum on
With limited time left in Shadowlands you should be gambling for shoulder's looking to get
or
. If you have these pieces already, you are free to spend Residuum on offspecs or simply higher item level pieces. As when Shadowlands launches all Azerite traits will be disabled in that content.
Your chest and helm will ideally come from the raid, as such gambling for good Azerite pieces on those slots is not recommended.
How Does The Heart of Azeroth Work?

Unlocking Holy Paladin Azerite Powers
Each Azerite Armor piece has different rings of power, and each ring unlocks at a certain level of power from your
. Each of those rings has various options of Azerite Powers to select, and you can pick one power per ring unlocked.
Depending on the source of your Azerite Armor piece, each ring will have a different
level required to be unlocked, for instance, a quest piece will be fully unlocked at level 9, while a raid piece may need level 25 or higher to be fully powered. To learn more about Azerite Powers, including how to replace them, check our in-depth

Azerite Armor for Holy Paladin
Here is a list of a few Battle for Azeroth pieces with Holy traits to look for. Note that you can have the same traits in multiple pieces and their effects will stack up to three times. The power listing here is based on all items having an equal item level. Remember that item level can often be a larger increase than a better set of traits.
In many cases, it will be important for you to have a wide variety of pieces with those traits, as they can have different values depending on what content you are doing, like Raids, Mythic+ or PvP.
It can be tricky to choose the most optimal pieces of gear, and the best choices on the piece of gear itself. The above list will help in some respect, as you want to get as many of the "Class S" traits as possible on a single piece of gear for the most part. But certain Ring 1: Traits will outweigh the latter traits.
For the most part you will want to look first at the Ring 1 trait, as this is often the most powerful and impactful of the three rows, figure out which pieces of gear have the desired traits from the list above on Ring 1. Then look at the subsequent rows and find either a Tier S or Tier A trait on each row.
So it should be sort of a checklist
Is the Ring 1 trait one of the ones I want?
Is the Ring 2 trait good or is it just okay?
Is the Ring 3 trait good?
When all 3 traits are good options, then its probably a pretty good piece!
For some recommendations on which pieces to strive for, check out the
Holy Paladin gear guide

Finding Azerite Armor
Unlike other sources of gear, Azerite Armor isn't fully available in every game activity. While you can obtain it normally on non-keystone Dungeons and World Quests, there are only a handful of sources after that point for higher item level Azerite gear:
Periodic Emissary Caches, scaling with player item level up to 445.
Personal Loot Drops from The Eternal Palace, up to 445 on Mythic difficulty.
Personal Loot Drops from Ny'alotha, the Waking City, up to 485 on Mythic difficulty.
Weekly PvP Ranking Rewards, up to 475 at 2100+ (Duelist or higher rank)
Random or specific Azerite pieces from
, at the expense of
.
None of these sources are really farmable and Azerite Armor cannot Titanforge, so it's difficult to target specific bonuses; generally higher item level is Azerite pieces are better. The best way to guarantee desired traits is to complete the highest Mythic+ Keystone possible to receive as much
from your weekly chest in order to buy specific Azerite Armor pieces from
.

I think
Moment of compassion
will be good, unlike in legion we will heal the tanks more frequently, and when we have to switch on the tank it's because he's taking a lot of damages so more healing on the beacon is good.
The three class S traits are better though.

If you have azerite trait "Ephemeral Recovery" on multiple pieces of gear it stacks in the following way:
1 piece:
"Restoring X mana every 2 seconds"
2 pieces:
"Restoring 2X mana every 2 seconds"

Could you include the engineering helm's azerite traits? I'd like to find out if their azerite traits are better/worse than some of the ones you've listed. Would really appreciate it, thanks!
