How to Play Affliction Warlock in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Affliction Warlock is the premiere drain damage spec in World of Warcraft, and that doesn't change in Shadowlands. If you're looking to slowly eat away at your enemies' life pools with a slurry of damage over time abilities and debuffs, this spec is for you.
The Affliction play style is pretty straightforward:
Apply various Damage over Time abilities to your enemies -
,
, and
are the baseline ones with extra talent options available as well.
Drain the life out of your opponents with your nukes.
does scaling damage based on the number of effects on your targets, whereas
is a consistent damage option when you have nothing else to hit.
Affliction is one of the most consistent damage classes in the game. When it's strong on single target, it excels in multi-target. On top of the consistent overall damage, it excels at execute when talented into
, which is a must-take talent at all times.

How Different Does Affliction Warlock Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Affliction Warlock in Shadowlands is a relatively similar spec from what we played in BfA, and a quite different experience from Legion, if you dabbled in Affliction back then.
is no longer our Soul Shard spender, returning to its pre-Legion days of being just a DoT that you keep on your focus target at all times. However, it can only ever be applied to one target at a time. Replacing
as our new Soul Shard spender,
makes its debut as possibly the strongest shard spender ever. When you hit this ability, it does damage to every target that you have a DoT effect applied to and does increased damage for each DoT on that target. This opens up Affliction to incredibly strong burst AoE damage, should you have the time and shards to set up for it.
With the removal of
as a talent,
returns as our de facto talent of choice in that row, giving Affliction a versatile filler and some of the strongest execute in the game for Shadowlands. Other than these differences, Affliction's basic mechanic remains relatively close to what we are used to: DoT up your enemies, use your Soul Shards appropriately, and drain to win.
Realistically, the spec feels roughly the same as it did in BFA. The main difference, as described in the previous section, is the fact that
is vastly superior to
as a Soul Shard spender, and sets up Affliction for strongest multitarget potential. To expand on this difference,
can be thought of as a "one spender fits all scenarios" ability. It's your single target spender and your AoE spender; you only ever hit
when you need to apply
to multiple targets at once.
New Abilities for Affliction Warlock in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
- New Soul Shard spender. Hits every target within range and Line of Sight for flat scaling damage based on the number of DoTs on the targets. Because of this effect, this opens Affliction up to previously unthinkable talent choices, such as
for quick AoE burst.
- New Doomguard ability of old. Honestly don't know where I stand with this one - 1 Hour cooldown second pet, with the potential for the pet to just randomly decide it doesn't want to play with you anymore and turn on you and your friends. It's likely we won't see any major use for this button.
Returning in Shadowlands from the days of old, are Curse spells. These have their own individual uses and might see some valuable use in raids and dungeons to reduce damage/impact on your groups.
- Probably the least useful of the returning curses. If your group doesn't have any available slows, you can use this to apply a 50% slow for 8 seconds. However, a majority of other classes' built-in slows will override this with a more powerful effect.
- Incredibly useful for spellcaster bosses. 30% increased cast time = roughly 30% less damage taken from any baseline boss casting. Imagine Jaina with 30% less damage dealt to tanks. This does have a weird interaction with some bosses abilities; for instance, Shriekwing in the new raid has a 4 second cast time, which at the end deals damage to your raid unless you're line of sight. Even though this curse increases the cast time to 5.2 seconds, as it should, the damage from the bosses' cast still goes off at the 4 second mark. This sounds like a bug, but as of yet some of these interactions are unfixed and should be considered when potentially using this curse.
- Another tank damage intake reduction. You'll probably end up having one warlock in your raid always using this if tank damage is a problem.
In addition to these new spells, a couple of new talent additions have been made;
is making a return, filling the empty void that
left. Some speculation has been made about its strength with the new Night Fae Covenant Ability,
, but unfortunately at the moment, this talent is incredibly undertuned.
is making its debut as a new talent, replacing the now baseline
. The 60 second time reduction makes it line up perfectly with our last talent row choice in a lot of situations,
, which is something all Affliction Warlocks in BfA had dreamed about. This is an interesting talent choice; because a large portion of
's strength was tied to stacking multiple
s and extending them, a large portion of Affliction's burst is gone. Instead,
is now more of a time investment. Extending your active DoTs reduces the amount of time you need to refresh them, so the more targets you have available the more value
brings. Thus, this new talent is likely only going to see play in multiple target situations, as
still exists as the premiere single target DPS talent.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Affliction Warlock in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Affliction isn't target capped on any of their AoE spells. Enjoy listening to hunters and melee all complain about it. Remember to remind them every time they complain that you don't see any problem with the target cap!

How Strong is Affliction Warlock in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Affliction's strengths in Shadowlands are very flexible, but the main thing to look at in pre-patch is the basics. In general, Affliction has some of the most consistent single target DPS available to any class. In addition, since
also hits any secondary targets with DoTs, the multi-target capabilities of Affliction are quite high.
also provides a baseline execute damage boost to an already strong class. I would rank Affliction as one of the must-have classes in your raid.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Affliction Warlock?
There aren't any major gameplay changes to Affliction. The major additions are the Curses mentioned in the new abilities section. Other than that, Soul Shards are still your main resource, you still gain them from either a chance per
tick or from
ing dying enemies. You still apply your DoTs to enemies, and you still use Soul Shards on spenders.
The only major min-max gameplay added is the efficiency of
usage. Since you'll either be talenting into
or
, it's ideal to dump your Soul Shards while you have those effects up, as they increase the damage of
. Apart from this, the gameplay is largely unchanged.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Affliction Warlock in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The loss of Corruption effects really doesn't change or affect Affliction Warlock that much. Of course, you'll feel a lot slower without 100% haste all the time, but the core gameplay will be more or less exactly the same. Some people might find that they need to focus on important GCD choices more closely in order to maintain an optimal rotation, but the pre-patch should allow ample time to get used to not having a ridiculous amount of secondary stats in Shadowlands.
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Spec Class in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
The only spell we have that's affected by the new GCD changes is
if you're talented into it. It's now off the GCD.
Best Talent Builds for Affliction Warlock in Pre-patch
With only a couple of new talents, we're going to be running close to the same spec for most situations.
makes
a strong option for AoE burst, so we're going to be running that in multi-target situations, with
for more Darkglares as well.
The raiding talent calculator has a couple of options for different styles of encounter - the below talents are selected for pure single target.
For anything outside of pure single target, you'll want to talent into
. With extra targets, it's going to be difficult to maintain
, and the extra GCDs available are better used on
for damage.
The level 30 talent row is a personal choice. Warlock mobility is always a weak point, so
is a default pick in a lot of situations. However, both of the other two options are great if survivability is needed on a particularly hard encounter.
is better than
on anything that has more than one target, so choose accordingly.
The Mythic+ talent setup is a little more set in stone than the raiding one - the only real swap choice I'd look for is the level 30 talent row. If you need more survivability, spec into
.
Best Rotation for Affliction Warlock in Pre-Patch
Rotations are a little out of date in terms of how you should play a class, I'm going to give a quick little priority list instead.
Keep DoTs applied to your targets at all times. Any DoTs missing are inefficiencies. You should try to have at least 95% uptime on
,
, the one target
is applied to, and
if talented.
Never overcap on shards. If you're on 5 shards or have been sitting on 4 shards for a long time, use one even if you're not close to hitting a dump window. Overcapping is always bad.
Use shards efficiently. Instead of just dumping
casts whenever you get a shard, save them for windows where you have
or
available. This will increase your overall efficiency and see you doing more damage in general.
Use cooldowns when available. If not talented into
, you'll want to use
separately from
. It may feel awkward to do, but missing out on a potential usage over the course of the fight is way worse.
Your opener is pretty simple, and similar to previous openers.
Since
is now off the GCD, you can cast it as you start the sequence.
Apply
.
Apply
Apply
. If 3 or more stacked targets, use
instead.
Apply
if talented.
Apply either
or
if talented.
Cast
, and follow the above priority.
For more information, check out the
Rotation
guide.
Best Stats for Afflction Warlock in Pre-Patch
Stat priority for Affliction is again, largely unchanged. You'll want to follow the below priority list.
Item level
Haste
Mastery
Critical Strike / Versatility
As usual, you'll want to constantly sim your character because in Shadowlands secondary stats grow less potent the more of them you have in a single stat, with stacking diminishing returns.
Best Azerite Traits for Affliction Warlock in Pre-Patch
Azerite Traits are completely unchanged.
and
are by far still your best options.
For other options outside of these two, see the
Azerite guide
.
Best Essences for Affliction Warlock in Pre-Patch
Essence choices are also largely unchanged. You'll still want to use
as your Major essence for single target, and
for AoE.
Minors that give stats are highly prioritized:
,
,
, and
are all-powerful. For more information, check out the
Essences guide
.

Last I checked on PTR and Beta Cascading Calamity is broken and doesn't proc with the UA rework. Is this wrong? Is it expected to work at launch?
Edit: Also the Inevitable Demise talent and azerite trait do not stack, and I think it was the talent overrides the damage bonus from the azerite trait. It wasn't suggested to stack them in this guide, but just pointing that out.
Update: These are confirmed working properly now on the latest build for PTR. Inevitable Demise looks especially competitive, so this guide now feels somewhat out of date as of posting this.

Cascading Calamity is not working simply because of the tooltip "Casting UA on a target already affected by your UA increases...." we can only cast one UA so he buff is not working anymore.
As for ID yeah it doesn't stack with the talent.

Remember to remind them every time they complain that you don't see any problem with the target cap!
I'm thinking of making a macro with seed of corruption :D

Use shards efficiently. Instead of just dumping Malefic Rapture casts whenever you get a shard, save them for windows where you have Phantom Singularity (or Vile Taint) available
I can't stress this enough. This is an amazing soul shard dump and DPS in this window

Corruption on live pre SL is instant, tooltip on guide says 2 sec cast ? Am I missing something here ? re-wrote all my macro's and scripts the other day in prep for pre patch had to revert everything now, working fine as it did pre update.
As for Cascading Calamity can confirm still works just require's 2 UA casts
