How to Play Beast Mastery Hunter in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Beast Mastery Hunter in Shadowlands is a fantastic spec that utilizes its ferocious animal companions to ravage foes, and fulfills a unique and well-defined class fantasy. If you are looking for an extremely mobile ranged DPS with tons of utility and a strong, pet-based class identity, then consider giving it a try.
Possibly the biggest attraction to playing Beast Mastery is the spec's mobility.
Beast Mastery is the only ranged DPS specialization in the game that can do 100% of its damage while moving
, with no restrictions whatsoever. This provides a huge benefit in any sort of PvE content, as you can always do mechanics or deal with whatever is going on without ever needing to waste any damage, something no other ranged DPS can do. Combining their mobility with incredible spells like
, Beast Mastery Hunters are perfect for doing odd-jobs and any sort of mechanical challenges that raids and dungeons might present.
Hunters use
Focus
as their core resource, which for Beast Mastery is used primarily for
and
to deal damage. The core of your rotation revolves around
, which is used to keep
up on your pets to allow them to do more damage as well as to lower the cooldown on
. These spells will make up 90% or more of your rotation, with the remaining spells coming from your various cooldowns and other utility abilities. Beast Mastery also offers excellent cleave potential through the use of
to put up
, which allows your pet attacks to cleave multiple enemies at once.
If you are a returning player, or feel that you might benefit from a more in-depth take on the spec, the rest of this guide and both the
beginner's guide
and
rotation guide
may be worth checking out to get some more insight into the finer details of the spec.
How Different Does Beast Mastery Hunter Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Your current gear level will mostly determine how different Beast Mastery will feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch. The lower your gear level, the more similar it will feel. For the majority of Hunters, the new rotation will feel a bit slower than in BFA, but not unreasonably so. In the pre-patch, you will still be able to keep all of your Azerite powers and essences, which is the core of Beast Mastery's power in BFA. However, because you are losing Corruption, for most Hunters that means losing a substantial amount of stats, specifically Critical Strike and Haste. While the actual rotation and play-style are mostly the same, the rotation is slowed down due to this loss, which means you will not have nearly as many
procs. You will need to pay more attention to your
usage to always ensure you have three stacks of
up. Again, functionally you will be following the same rotation, but you will have just need to pay a bit more attention to your
usage since it will be more limited than you might be used to. Your rotation will be modified slightly as well, if you take the new
talent, which most Hunters will, but this will be covered more below.
New Abilities for Beast Mastery Hunter in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
New Abilities
Beast Mastery is getting several new abilities with the pre-patch. While most of them are just old flavorful abilities brought back, there is one new important button being added to your arsenal:
.
, on the other hand is a welcome return and gives you a little bit of variance in your rotation. Kill Shot works exactly how you might expect it to; it will light up during execute, and you press it for more damage. Kill Shot is not quite as strong for Beast Mastery as it is for Marksmanship but it still gives you a nice shot to press when targets get low, and for only costing 10 focus it offers excellent efficiency. Do not let your frenzy stacks drop just to press this a second sooner, but you should be looking to hit it whenever possible on anything sub-20% health.
Beast Mastery will also get access to a few older abilities, brought back to add some flavor. These reinstated abilities are
,
,
,
and
. None of the others will impact your PvE gameplay at all, with the exception of
. This does not add any new functionality for Beast Mastery, it was just added to give Marksmanship the same dispelling capabilities that Beast Mastery has had from its pets. All this means is that you can now dispel magic and enrage effects yourself without worrying about pet positioning.
Baseline Ability Updates
Aside from new spells, we've also had some changes to a few of our baseline abilities.
- Misdirect all threat you cause to the targeted party or raid member,
for the next 8 sec
beginning with your next attack within 30 sec and lasting for 8 sec.
- Revives your pet, returning it to life with 100% of its base health.
2 sec
4 sec cast
- Grants you and your pet 5 focus per second and 10% increased crit chance for 20 seconds. Aspect of the Wild has been removed from the GCD.
- Increases the damage that you and your pets deal by 25% for 15 seconds. Bestial Wrath now also deals a small burst damage to your target on use, equivalent to about half of a Kill Command.
While these are all relatively minor, the
change is quite unfortunate, and has the potential to be dire in certain situations since standing still for 4 seconds might not always be possible. On the other hand,
coming off the GCD is a welcome change, and will make using it much easier, especially in the opener.
Talent Changes
Finally, once pre-patch hits you will notice a few minor talent changes along with some new talent options.
now has a target cap of 8 targets.
has had its focus cost removed.
has had its cooldown lowered from 3 minutes to 2 minutes.
now also increases pet healing by 30% along with damage.
received a decent nerf, while
and
received some minor buffs, but are all still pretty underwhelming. More importantly, you now have three new talents in the 25, 35, and 50 rows to replace
,
, and
.
has received a redesign, and now grants two charges of
whenever you use
. This is a significantly stronger talent now and will be the best choice on the row. You need a significant amount of crit to get
close to Scent of Blood's value, which may be reachable in a perfect BiS setup with full sockets in every slot, but even then it will be close. This also has the advantage of being completely reliable instead of RNG-based, meaning you know when the extra Barbed Shot charges are coming. However you look at it, this is a very attractive talent and will be competitive for any Beast Mastery Hunter.
is a new talent in the 35 row that is a redesign on the old Spitting Cobra. Sadly this is still not that strong, especially if you are using
since it is affected by the -35% pet damage aura that Animal Companion causes, which affects any pet or companion you summon besides your primary pet. While this is almost certainly is a bug, it has existed for quite some time and is just an unfortunate reality at the moment.
is a new talent in the 50 row that provides a nice single target option. This would be more competitive, but at the moment it does not work with
, and instead only benefits your primary pet. Unfortunately, this makes Bloodshed a significantly worse option in the optimal setup.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Beast Mastery Hunter in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Beast Mastery Hunters were unfortunately hit extremely hard with the target cap in two key places:
and
. Both of these are now capped at 5 additional targets, or 6 targets total including your main target. This will not change your play-style at all for AoE or cleave, but you simply will not be able to hit nearly as many targets in any sort of AoE situation with more than 6 targets available to hit. In other words, you will just be doing less AoE damage overall.
This also will be particularly noticeable if you run the Azerite trait,
. Since you will now be capped at 6 seconds of cooldown reduction per
cast, that means no more 100% uptime on
during massive AoE pulls in dungeons. You can still get it back up quickly, but there will be some downtime.
All AoE Target Caps
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Beast Mastery Hunter in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
is being removed from the GCD. This means that you can now cast it with
during the opener and will never need to use an extra GCD on it, which is a welcome change for Beast Mastery. While this is a great change, it is relatively minor overall in terms of how much this affects your gameplay.
How Strong is Beast Mastery Hunter in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Even with the slower rotation and loss of stats from Corruption, Beast Mastery is still quite strong in the pre-patch.
and
are only slightly less effective than before, due entirely to the loss of Corruption, and you will therefore have a bit less up-time on both. You can use the same Azerite and Essence setup to retain most of the power that Beast Mastery has seen towards the end of BFA.
While you will still be just as effective in raids, you will notice a loss in power in dungeons, but that is entirely due to the new AoE caps on
and
. This is not to say you will be weak, just that you will not be able to AoE nearly as effectively in 7+ target pulls, which can be quite common in dungeons. Luckily, Beast Mastery was not alone in getting hit with a target cap; many of the other dominant specs in M+ have been given similar caps, so at the very least you do not need to worry about the other previously dominant specs surpassing you.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Beast Mastery Hunter?
Despite all of the text and changes listed above, the impact on your gameplay will be pretty limited. If nothing else, all you really need to know is that you should be paying a bit more attention to your
uptime, or more specifically, you will need to be more cautious with your
usage. In BFA, with high levels of gear and Corruption, it is nearly impossible to overuse Barbed Shot, but in the pre-patch, you absolutely can overuse it if you are not paying attention. If you have fewer than 2 charges of Barbed Shot, just wait make sure you are holding off and refreshing Frenzy closer to when it would be falling off. Most Beast Mastery Hunters will also opt to run
now, which means you will want to make sure to spend all available
charges before you use
since you will get two fresh charges upon use. This also means you will want to pay closer attention to your
cooldown as well, since you will want to spam out your
charges while you can still get the full 12 seconds off of Bestial Wrath's cooldown with each use.
Besides that, just make sure you are remembering to use
on enemies below 20%.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Beast Mastery Hunter in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
I have already talked pretty extensively about how the loss of Corruption will affect Beast Mastery Hunter. Most Beast Mastery Hunters were stacking Severe and Expedient for the extra Critical Strike and Haste, so losing those will slow down your rotation quite a bit. This means fewer
procs, a lower
uptime, and a higher chance you will let
fall off if you are not holding
charges for it. For a bit more of an explanation, you can look at the gameplay changes section directly above this.
The bigger change for most Hunters however, will be the loss of the Corrupted bow,
. This bow has become a staple of Beast Mastery's gameplay in 8.3 by significantly increasing the rate at which your cooldowns recharge. Losing it will be noticeable, which means you cannot rely on it for a quick
recharge time or for lower cooldowns in general. You will mostly feel this in your
uptime, as the cooldown will now just be a flat 2 minutes baseline. On the upside though, using
did require you to avoid using your other Hunter cooldowns like
and
as much as possible for "optimal" DPS gameplay since the CDR could be applied to any Hunter ability with a cooldown. Once pre-patch hits, you can once again freely use your utility and defensive spells without worrying about the effect they will have on your DPS.
Best Talent Builds for Beast Mastery Hunter in Pre-patch
While Beast Mastery did receive some talent changes, the best builds are mostly the same as in BFA.
This build has two potential choice rows:
Level 30
:
is going to be the best option by default as it will give you the greatest number of extra
uses, but
is still a viable choice if you are extremely well geared with full sockets. The main benefit of One with the Pack is that it will spread your Barbed Shot procs out more, which could make it a bit easier to keep up
, but you will see slightly fewer procs overall. You also do not need to worry about dumping Barbed Shot charges before using
.
Level 100
:
is a bit weaker than in BFA due to the loss of secondary stats, and therefore fewer procs during
. In fact, with lower gear levels,
will be better since you will not be able to get as many combos off inside
. However, the moment that you start using
for multiple targets, Aspect of the Beast will pull far ahead.
The AoE build only has one choice row:
Level 30
:
is going to be the best option by default as it will give you the greatest number of extra
uses, but
is still a viable choice if you are extremely well geared with full sockets. The main benefit of One with the Pack is that it will spread your Barbed Shot procs out more, which could make it a bit easier to keep up
, but you will see slightly fewer procs overall. You also do not need to worry about dumping Barbed Shot charges before using
.
Best Rotation for Beast Mastery Hunter in Pre-Patch
The Beast Mastery rotation still revolves around two things: keeping
up with
and using
on cooldown. On AoE, you will also still be using
to keep up
all of the time.
Single Target
if
is about to drop, or if Barbed Shot has 2 full charges.
- Remember that this is off the GCD now.
if your target is below 20% health.
if you are about to reach 2 charges.
if Kill Command has more than 2 seconds of cooldown left, or if you're about to reach full Focus within those 2 seconds.
Two important notes. First, be careful not to spam
too much or you will risk wasting its cooldown reduction effect on
. Sometimes it is better to just wait for Kill Command to come off cooldown. Second, if you are running the
talent, remember that you need to spend all of your
charges before using
since it will give you 2 fresh charges. This means that you should be dumping your Barbed Shot charges up to ~24 seconds before Bestial Wrath comes off cooldown, depending on how many charges you have, since each Barbed Shot reduces the cooldown of Bestial Wrath by 12 seconds.
Finally, if you are running
, then keep in mind that
fully resets
during
, so you will want to alternate Cobra Shot with Kill Command while it is up. Ideally, you would also pool some Focus before using Bestial Wrath to maximize your usage of this talent.
Multiple Targets
if
is about to drop, or if Barbed Shot has 2 full charges.
if there are 3+ total targets and
is not active
- Remember that this is off the GCD now.
if your target is below 20% health.
if there are 2 total targets and
is not active
if you are close to having 2 charges.
if your focus is >90 and
is already active.
This rotation has the same notes as above, but you should not be using
nearly as often since you will be using
most of the time instead to keep
up.
Best Stats for Beast Mastery Hunter in Pre-Patch
Weapon DPS >> Agility > Haste >= Crit > Versatility >= Mastery
To simplify, you should go for a high ilvl weapon and prioritize higher ilvl pieces for more Agility with Haste and Crit as your preferred secondary stats. For multiple targets, when you start using
, Mastery becomes significantly more valuable.
The above stats are a generalization that will be sufficient for most players. That being said, I still advise you to head over to Raidbots.com to simulate your own personal character for more accurate results.
Best Azerite Traits for Beast Mastery Hunter in Pre-Patch
I highly recommend that you sim yourself to find the best setup for your gear. Below are the Azerite traits that are most likely to perform the best.
Tier 1 and 2 traits are going to be very similar to in BFA. Ideally, you will still want 3 each of
and
. If you cannot get those,
is a great alternative especially now that Agility is more valuable than before. For AoE on 3+ targets, getting a single trait of
is still extremely strong.
With Tier 3 traits you have a few options that are all reasonably close in value.
,
, and
are going to be your best options, in that order.
Nothing has changed for our defensive tier. We still want traits such as
,
, and
.
Best Essences for Beast Mastery Hunter in Pre-Patch
Once again, you should sim yourself to find the best results for your character. Below are the Essences that are most likely to perform the best.
Major:
Ideally you will take
, but only if you have 3x
traits. Without the traits, take
.
is also a great alternative for AoE or as a starter essence since it is easy to obtain.
Minors:
,
, and
. Depending on the fight,
can be better than
if there are multiple targets to swap between. If you have other players also running it,
is a great choice for a minor essence when you can get the full uptime.

we are not going to use arcane shot in SL as BM?

Remember that hunter's mark is being tested and last iteration in beta it doesn't apply the little boost on damage.

Missed Barrage in the AoE Target Caps section -- now capped at 8 targets.

so no changes at all. I mean yeah we now have kill shot. but I'm not sure if I am going to use it ever( as BM, maybe if I mess up and have nothing else to do) and risk loosing my frenzy or be short on focus to use KC and definitely not during BW(I'm going with killer cobra, almost always). it has no interaction with other abilities.
also that 4 sec pet rez is just awful. and if I'm not mistaken the nerf to spirit mend has been nerfed a lot. also currently in ptr my Clefthooves have lost its Blood of the Rhino, I just hope at least the last one is just a bug.

Curious as to why this guide recommends Trailblazer instead of Natural Mending - if I'm mistaken Natural Mending was far superior? Thanks

Okay good, I don't need to worry about finding a place for Hunter's Mark or Arcane Shot on my bars.
