How to Play a Demonology Warlock in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
For the first expansion in a while Demonology actually didn't go through any major changes, so if you've played Demonology at all throughout BFA you'll be in great shape. If you like Demons, this is the spec for you.
Demonology gameplay is almost intuitive but also not;
Keep
on cooldown, cast
with 3
, and depending on talents you'll be looking to keep as many demons out as you can.
and
are our baseline
builders with
having a heavy cast time that is reduced to instant with
.
Demonology's damage profile is pretty narrow when compared to other Warlock specs but you can expect consistent single target damage and.....somewhat not consistent AoE.
How Different Does Demonology Warlock Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Unlike in most new expansions, Demonology is going to feel exactly the same in the pre-patch, compared to the rest of BFA. With no major baseline changes and very few talent changes, you shouldn't have to adapt very much in preparation for Shadowlands. The biggest thing you will feel is the lack of Corruption, but we'll get into that later.
Demons spawned from
/
hit a bit harder,
is going to feel more impactful (no more reduced damage on secondary targets) and you'll maybe even get to experience some talents that you've never talented in two years of BFA;
and
. When used together they allow your
to AoE using their hardest hitting ability,
.
New Abilities for Demonology Warlocks in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
- A strange way for Blizzard to add back in some flavor to Warlock by having this spell still murder one of your friends (or you) is....something you'll probably not press unless you're down for some Russian roulette.
- More of a last resort than anything else since it's single target and can be/is overridden by a majority of classes that have AoE slowing built into their kit.
- A particularly good curse for any boss that casts spells as, currently, it affects bosses. The only downside would be having to maintain it as it is a 30-second debuff.
- If tank damage is an issue you'll see at least one Warlock using this ability on the boss. Reducing attack speed is not a bad mitigation tool at all especially if the boss is hitting you for 50% of your HP each swing.
- Please don't put this ability on your bar. I'm just as confused as you are why this spell is back in our kit.
- Given how often we have to resummon our pets this shouldn't see
too
much use but is nice for resummoning your pet after a wipe or if it dies in open world content. Just be sure to....not let your pet die more than once every 3 minutes.
Additionally we have 3 talent changes:
- The only thing to change for this talent is the bonus damage for
that didn't exist previously. This talent may not be preferable to
given you will still want to pay attention to your
duration closely so as not to sacrifice two full energy Imps.
- There is a small change to this talent that has a larger impact when paired with
. Previously
only included
your
damage and did not include
. With it now affecting
you can pair the two talents and have AoE damage
that also applies the
debuff to all targets bitten, which then boosts your
splash damage on all targets. It's a small change with a somewhat big impact for talent choice.
- Instead of absorbing all your
s and making them all go away, this talent is adopting a theme from Legion and absorbing some of
all
of your demons health in order to boost its damage. A welcome change that brings back some of the more fun things about Legion Demonology.
And we one have change that is highly requested by the community but not quite implemented the way we wanted:
now interrupts! There are some caveats to this however that need to be explained:
If mob is stunnable,
stuns.
If mob is stunnable but on full stun DR,
does nothing.
If mob is boss target and not stun immune,
stuns.
If mob is boss target and stun immune,
interrupts.
It is important for you to realize/understand when your
will be useful (as in it will interrupt) or when it will be....not as useful (as in when it will stun). For example in BFA there are certain mobs that require a hard interrupt (
in Atal'Dazar) that
will not interrupt, only stun.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Demonology Warlocks in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Demonology has only 1 spell affected by the AoE target cap and it's not the same spell has we had in BFA.
in BFA was "target capped" in such a way that it only did full damage to the primary target you cast the spell on, and reduced damage to all others. This is now removed and does full damage to all targets.
is actually the "new" spell affected by the target cap, going from all targets to a limit of 8. This is probably a good change since
contributed a good chunk of your damage overall in AoE.
Since we are basically just flip-flopping one spell for another in terms of AoE target caps I think we come out of this fairly unscathed and in a better position having
uncapped.
All AoE Target Caps
How Strong are Demonology Warlocks in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Overall Demonology mostly sits in the same position it was in prior to the Pre-Patch. The single target niche we are "supposed" to fill is lackluster and our AoE simply isn't consistent enough to warrant being played in dungeons. There are certainly some use cases for Demonology but overall Demonology Warlock is still near or at the bottom of most tier lists still.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Demonology Warlocks?
Overall there are no major gameplay changes for Demonology. You are still building and spending
the same way. The biggest change will be that your damage breakdown profile will be less about
and more about your whole toolkit.
Your main focus for gameplay will be to keep as many of your summons out as possible in order to feed your
as much as possible since that will still be a big source (though not your only source) of damage. Due to
not consuming your Wild Imps when playing with
you will have the ability to stockpile Wild Imps for much larger
, doubly so since there is no more damage reduction to secondary targets.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Demonology Warlocks in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Given that all you were doing with Corruption was stacking additional secondary stats, losing Corruption is not a big blow to you except for the fact that you'll go back to feeling as slow as molasses, just like we were prior to Corruption.
Best Talent Builds for Demonology Warlocks in Pre-patch
Demonology Warlocks don't see too much change to talent builds except that you are introduced to a "dawg" build for M+ that you can play as an alternative spec to your normal M+ spec.
There is some flexibility to playing
over
here and ultimately should be down to your preference.
Best Rotation for Demonology Warlocks in Pre-Patch
The following is less of a rotation and more of a priority list:
Cast
and/or
, if talented.
Cast
with one set of
and 2+ sets of 3 Wild Imps (one freshly cast if possible).
Cast
, if talented.
Cast
and
to use your
.
Cast
or
(if you have
) to gain
.
During AoE scenarios you are going to be looking at cycling between 3
casts and
.
As for a basic opener priority this is what you should be following:
Pre-cast
Cast
and/or
, if talented
Cast
Cast
Cast
Cast
, if talented
Follow the above priority
For more information you can view either the
Beginner's Guide
or a more detailed breakdown of the
rotation here

Best Stats for Demonology Warlocks in Pre-Patch
With the introduction of stacking diminishing returns on secondary stats you will want to assess your stats most often by simming your character, however this is a good baseline to follow:
Item level
Haste
Critical Strike
Versatility/Mastery
Best Azerite Traits for Demonology Warlocks in Pre-Patch
There are no changes for Demonology in terms of Azerite. You will still want the following Traits:
- As many as possible, up to 3
- As many as possible, up to 3
- Used as filler if you are missing either of the above two
- Used as filler as a last resort if you are a returning player and don't have every piece of Azerite gear you could ever want
You can follow the
Azerite Guide for Demonology Warlocks
in BFA still.
Best Essences for Demonology Warlocks in Pre-Patch
Again completely unchanged, you can use either of these two setups:
More consistent, controlled damage - this is the build you see majority of players use:

"our AoE simply isn't consistent enough to warrant being played in dungeons." I strongly disagree.

Always great to see the class guide authors essentially say "why are you even playing this spec idiot".

My primary issue with classes having 3 dps specs is that one will always be better and easier. AoE is a chore as demonology, and keeping track of imps is a bother the other specs don't have. And where's the reward? None.
Demonology gets no such praise, as you're basically gimping yourself to "enjoy" pets, which is already taboo since pets are generally considered for an insecure kind of player.

I see the "We rather you didn't play Demo" mindset still holds true.

Because we're a Warlock. It's part of the flavor. I hated that most things were removed because they weren't useful (by raiders' standards?). That's for us to decide how to play these classes. I love finding fun ways to make myself feel more in tune with my class. I'm sure I can find some way to use this. Heck, RP'ers will definitely use this.
