How to Play a Destruction Warlock in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Destruction has always been known as a spec that excels at dealing large hits through
and very strong cleave damage due to
. In Shadowlands Destruction is receiving multiple changes both to our current spells, our talents, and more.
Our primary resource is Soul Shards which we both generate and spend with a number of abilities in our kit. We can choose to either spend them on
which is a single target ability or
with is an AoE ability that deals damage over time. We are a very cooldown oriented spec, this means a large portion of our damage is dealt during our
cooldown.

How Different Does Destruction Warlocks Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Destruction does feel different in Shadowlands than it did in BFA. The core of the spec remains somewhat the same, we still generate and spend Soul Shards and our big dmg cooldown is still
. With the loss of corruption effects the spec will feel significantly slower to play, but that doesn't mean we have become any worse.
We have received a number of changes to our talent tree that opens up for multiple different talent builds. Previously we have more or less been playing the exact same talents in every type of content and luckily it doesn't look like that will be the case in Shadowlands.
I will go over what to expect when playing a Destruction Warlock in the Shadowlands pre-patch, but in general, the core of the spec is still the same so if you have enjoyed playing the spec before you're likely to enjoy it in the future.
New Abilities for Destruction Warlocks in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
We have received a number of new and returning spells in the Shadowlands Pre-patch:

are available to all 3 specs.
has been changed from being a talent to being baseline.
Summon Demon cast times have been increased significantly, but in return, we have gotten
that reduces the cast time by 5.5 seconds.
is a ritual that requires 4 participants to complete. In the end, one participant will be sacrificed to summon a Doomguard that can then be enslaved. This is on a 1-hour cooldown that does not reset on boss-resets.
These are mostly minor additions to our utility kit and the only thing really worth mentioning is
being baseline and the return of curses. These are going to be useful in various scenarios, but aren't really going to make the spec feel any different.
We have also received an overhaul on some of our talents, some of them are completely new and others are big enough changes to the talent that they're worth mentioning:
has been changed to be sort of an "empowered
" that also applies
on a 45 second cooldown.
now costs 1 Soul Shard, has 50% increased Critical Strike Chance on targets with less than 20% health, and generates 1 Soul Shard if the target dies within 5 seconds.
With
being baseline it opened op a slot on our talent tree, this has been filled by
.
is a completely new talent that gives you a 20% chance to summon an additional infernal when spending a Soul Shard during your
.
has been changed from being a DoT to a debuff that increases your
,
and
damage for 8 seconds.
There are some interesting changes and additions in the Destruction Warlock Talent tree in Shadowlands. The change to
opens up to a more fire-damage oriented talent setup. The addition of
opens up for the possibility of a very "heavy AoE burst" oriented talent setup. These are some interesting changes that allow us to choose our talents to fit the content we're intending on doing more than we have been able to do in the past.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Destruction Warlocks in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
One of the big subjects people have been talking about when discussing Shadowlands has been the AoE caps being introduced. Luckily Destruction is not one of the affected specs. Our major AoE spells simply are not limited to X targets:
deals damage to all enemies in the affected area.
-
is also not limited to X amount of targets.
deals damage and applies
to all affected targets.
makes
hit all enemies near your target and generate 2 Soul Shard Fragments for each enemy hit.
None of these spells have been affected by the AoE limitations other classes have been affected by.

How Strong is Destruction Warlock in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Currently, Destruction looks to be a very strong spec in multiple types of content. The spec becomes slower to play, but with the numerous talent and ability changes, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. We have gotten more utility from
becoming a baseline spell, curses being added to our kit, and our new talents.
Since we are a DPS spec, this question would not be fully answered without a comparison of where we rank compared to alternative DPS specs. We're looking very strong currently, this might be subject to change through tuning, but especially in AoE and cleave scenarios Destruction will definitely be a very attractive and well-performing spec.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Destruction Warlocks?
This is probably going to be the most interesting subject in this article. When it comes to gameplay quite a few things are going to change for the Destruction spec. Through all of BFA, Destruction has more or less been playing the exact same talents, with the only real exception being after the Corruption vendor was introduced and people got enough haste for the
+
to be more reliable. This is also going to change in the Shadowlands pre-patch as a lot of talents are changing.
Single Target Builds
You have a number of options to choose from when selecting your setup for single target Destruction. Numerous talents have been changed and with the removal of Grimoire of Supremacy, more options have become viable. There are quite a few interesting choices here:
- With less of our damage being from
and more being from
,
and
this talent is an interesting option for single target and cleave. It's worth mentioning this debuff is also applied through
duplicated by
.
is in my opinion one of the more fun spells in the Destruction kit. Relatively short cooldown, decent damage overall, and definitely a viable option.
is still the only talent in the level 35 row that is usable on single target.
It's no secret Destruction has never identified as a very strong single target spec, but more so a spec that excels at cleave damage due to
. This doesn't change in Shadowlands but the talent changes open up for the possibility of multiple new viable talent setups.
AoE Build
On the Shadowlands beta, people have been playing a very AoE oriented build for Destruction. This build revolves around your
cooldown and consists of 3 talents:

As mentioned this build revolves around your
cooldown. When your Infernal is active, your main goal is to generate and spend as many Soul Shards as you can in order to proc as many extra Infernals as possible through
. This build is also further empowered by the
Legendary effect (which isn't available until Shadowlands releases) that reduces your
cooldown for every Soul Shard you spend. The strength of this build is the very high on-demand AoE burst it offers. The weakness is that you're limited by your
cooldown meaning your damage outside of this cooldown will be lacking in comparison to others.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Destruction Warlocks in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The loss of corruption effects actually has quite a large impact on how Destruction plays. In Ny'alotha we stack a lot of haste % corruption effects, and since this is going away that means we're losing a very large amount of haste. This means Destruction will feel significantly slower to play than previously. There are other changes that also affect how the spec feels such as talents, spell reworks, and more. But in general, it's going to be a lot slower to play.
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Destruction Warlock in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
The only spell Destruction has that has gone off the GCD is
. This is not a huge change, but it does make popping your cooldowns feel less time-consuming. With the loss of Grimoire os Supremacy, we no longer have any reason to pop our
during a specific time inside our
. This means you can essentially pop it whenever it suits you best, and it being off the global cooldown makes this even easier.
Best Talent Builds for Destruction Warlock in Pre-patch
Destruction has received numerous changes to talents as well as a few newcomers. These are two suggestions for builds you could run when playing a Destruction Warlock.
Single Target
This setup offers you solid Single Target damage while still being able to cleave. Especially with
also being applied through
.
If there are enough targets you can swap out
for
.
This setup revolves around your
cooldown and proccing as many extra infernals through
as you can.
Rotation for Destruction Warlock in Pre-patch
Basic opener for Destruction Warlock on single target:
Pre-cast
when there's 3 seconds left on the pull-timer
If you're specced into

, if not then manually cast an
to land as the boss is pulled

casts as this grants you the most value.
Best Stats for Destruction Warlock in Pre-patch
A good estimate of what your stat weights might look like is:
Intellect
Mastery
Haste
Critical Strike
Versatility
mastery = haste >= crit >> vers
I always recommend using raidbots to sim the stat weights of your character. Depending on what gear you have your weights might be different from these.
Best Essences for Destruction Warlock in Pre-patch
With the loss of Grimoire of Supremacy, Vision of Perfection is no longer as desirable as it was before. That doesn't mean it's not still good for heavy cleave as Infernals damage along with the extra Soul Shards can be very strong as well.
Major Essences:
- Very strong for more or less every scenario. Both on single target, but also on multiple targets when combined with
+
.
- Still a very strong option, the extra Soul Shards+Infernal damage makes this very strong for dungeons where you're constantly fighting mobs.
Minor Essences:
All of these are more or less equally viable.
is only good value if you have high uptime.
as a minor essence is only worth it if it means you get more
uptime on a fight.
Best Azerite for Destruction Warlock in Pre-patch
In terms of Azerite gear there aren't really any changes for Destruction Warlocks in the pre-patch:
- Becomes much stronger when adds are introduced allowing you to proc it during the fight.
- Only good when you're able to use
to generate stacks. This is the case on the majority of the encounters in Ny'Alotha.
- Only good if it means you get more
uptime on a fight.

It's no secret Destruction has never identified as a very strong single target spec
there was a time actually....long long long ago....when CB was actually a good spender and we weren't crippled to rely on havoc as our core mechanic ;/

The text about
Ritual of Doom
is a bit confusing. Under the
New Abilities
heading, it states:
a ritual that requires 4 participants to complete
. However, in the tool tip, it states:
the caster and 4 additional party members
.
The tool tip seems more specific and, thus, probably correct.
In any case, Ritual of Doom seems like such a bizarre ability. Is it worth killing a party member to get a Doomguard (for an unspecified amount of time)? Yes, you can immediately resurrect said sacrifice (if you have that ability) but it still seems extreme to me.

Unless everyone else is slowed down too, we're pretty much screwed in ANY type of co-op play. Worse in PvP, no one wants us in raids, etc, etc. Or is there somthing here I'm missing?
