How to Play Feral Druid in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Feral is a mobile DPS spec with a damage profile oriented around finishers and maintaining bleeds. The spec identifies as a shapeshifter and there are a multitude of collectible forms for the spec accessible from the barbershop.
Anyone who's played Feral Druid over the last decade will remain broadly familiar with how to play the spec going into Shadowlands. The spec continues to play similarly to Battle for Azeroth, maintaining Bleeds (
and
) and filling other finishers with
.
There have been more changes to how the spec plays for Shadowlands which will be detailed in the relevant sections but returning Feral players should be pretty confident out of the box when Shadowlands Pre-Patch drops. New players to the spec shouldn't be afraid of picking it up though. Feral might have a reputation for being intimidating and hard to pick up, but that is largely history.
For more detailed information on how to play Feral you can check the
Rotation guide
or for a simpler look at it if you are new, check out the
Beginner's guide
.
How Different Does Feral Druid Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
If you've played Feral Druid before, you will be familiar with how the spec plays. Feral Druid continues to operate on a priority system:
Maintain
Maintain
at 5 combo points
to generate Combo points
The Feral playstyle is really simple when you break it down to the basics, and honestly is not that much more complicated to actually execute. The new
and
shift how the spec plays and throws some wrinkles into the mix, when compared to previous iterations of the spec. It shouldn't take long to adapt!
Berserk
has received changes after almost a decade of functioning the same way. Rather than the energy reduction that we've all come to know and (not) love, the new
now gives us stealth benefits on
and
and a 20% chance per combo point to generate 1 combo point (2 combo points later with the leveling perk when Shadowlands launches).
now also grants an additional combo point, meaning you'll get 2 combo points from a non-crit and 3 combo points from a crit.
This means that (if you exclude
) you'll be able to alternate
and
, of course, you wouldn't want to do that because
getting the stealth bonus means you'll want to cast that regardless, which makes it easy to proc the new
.
Bloodtalons
is one of the major changes to how the spec functions. Rather than the current iteration of
that triggers off Regrowth, the new iteration is triggered by casting 3 different generators within 4 seconds. Note that this does include both
and a
if talented, and will affect the next two finishers cast. You'll still want to avoid overcapping combo points, so the fact that it's a 4second duration becomes relevant with the
change.
New Abilities for Feral Druid in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Feral hasn't really got any new abilities, we have a few returning abilities from the past, though nothing hugely impactful.
is returning - This likely won't have much of an impact but it may occasionally be situationally useful.
is returning as a talent. This slots into the utility row and while it's not likely to change the game it could potentially see use on some fights.
is returning (though not for free).
replaces one of our charges of
None of these abilities are likely to have a huge impact on how the spec plays or feels but they could potentially find some situational use in PvE, and are likely to have much larger impacts in PvP.
We're also getting a tweak to Affinities, which will now also provide an active utility ability as well as the passive and other spec skills.
- Now grants
.
- Now grants
.
- Now grants
.
It's likely that Balance Affinity will remain the default option as
is more widely useful than the other options but there is potential that these may be useful occasionally and prompt changing affinities.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Spec Class in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Feral isn't the most impacted by Target Caps, we have a couple of abilities that have been capped, but for the most part, our AoE toolkit remains uncapped.
- is fully uncapped
- is capped to 5 targets
- is fully uncapped
- is capped to 5 targets much like
The target cap ends up not having a huge impact for Feral in Shadowlands. In pre-patch, you might notice more of an impact because you'll still have
which ramps up
damage by a fairly large margin.
All AoE Target Caps
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Feral Druid in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Feral doesn't have a huge number of changes to the GCD in Shadowlands. The only hugely relevant change in this area is that
is no longer on the GCD. In practise this is unlikely to have huge implications however it will make it feel that little bit smoother!
What are the Strengths of Feral Druid in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
With the changes to Feral Druid going into the Shadowlands Pre-Patch, Feral now actually has extremely strong single target burst, especially with the end game stats that we currently have and
interacting with the bonus damage from Stealthed
. With how short the scaled-down fights in pre-patches tend to be, there's good odds that Feral Druid shows up strongly on several single target encounters with a newly revamped burst toolkit.
Feral Druid's primary AoE tool remaining uncapped is highly positive for the spec in dungeons, though with
the spec will still notice the impact of the
target cap.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Feral Druid?
The primary gameplay changes for Feral Druids are during
, where your combo point cycles are drastically shorter than before, going from a minimum of 3 to, potentially, a maximum of 2. One important thing to note is that with the decoupling of
from
there is the chance that it might be worthwhile to spend combo points at 4 to avoid overcapping combo points.
The only other gameplay change outside of cooldowns for Feral is the change to
which will mean you'll want to reapply
at some point. This shouldn't be a major gameplay change and if you've played
or Feral prior to BFA, you should remember how to do that; it's likely you'll want to refresh
in
pandemic
during
if possible.
Pre-patch specific but with the strength of new
we might have a fun period of getting to try some new Azerite traits and Essences notably Blood Mist, Untamed Ferocity, and Vision of Perfection.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Feral Druid in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The loss of Corruption shouldn't impact Feral too much, We'll lose a bit of crit from Severe and a bit of crit damage from Strikethrough, but we'll still be rolling with enough crit that it shouldn't be meaningfully noticeable. We'll certainly not lose as much as many other specs will lose, so if you enjoy the pacing of the spec currently it should remain pretty much the same going into pre-patch as well!
Frankly, I can't wait to lose Corruption! Feral deals well with the negative effects of Corruption but it will be nice not to have to worry about it, everyone has experienced the moment where you try to move out of a mechanic and proc the Corruption slow at the worst possible time!
Best Talent Builds for Feral Druid in Pre-patch
Pretty standard build that anyone who plays live feral should be familiar with:
Tier 15
- Despite Sabertooth's nerfs it's still likely to show up as the best talent in the row for raiding.
Tier 25
- I prefer Wild Charge in this row personally, but any of these 3 talents can be played.
Tier 30
- Again this row is PRIMARILY utility and any of them can work, but Balance Affinity's range increase is almost always the most useful choice.
Tier 35
- Another utility row. Really any of these options work.
Tier 40
- With the
change, Incarnation has fallen even further out of favor, and while Savage Roar may be a solid choice for AoE, for raiding Soul of the Forest reigns supreme.
Tier 45
- This row really only has two talents, on most fights you'll take Brutal Slash in this row as it's the only talent in the row that has any single target value, however on fights with multiple targets then you'll want to take Primal Wrath.
Tier 50
-
has changed but it's still the best option here, although there is a chance with how short pre-patch fights are sometimes, that Feral Frenzy might show up.
Tier 15
- Predator's value remains supreme when you can get repeated resets. In some dungeons with heavy single-target focus, Sabertooth might be an option but Predator should be your default.
Tier 25
- I prefer Wild Charge in this row personally but any of these 3 talents can be played.
Tier 30
- Again this row is PRIMARILY utility and any of them can work but Balance Affinity's range increase is almost always the most useful choice.
Tier 35
- Another utility row. Really any of these options work.
Tier 40
- With the
change Incarnation has fallen even further out of favor, and while Savage Roar may be a solid choice for AoE, Soul of the Forest likely reigns supreme
Tier 45
- For AoE Primal Wrath is a no brainer.
Tier 50

has changed but it's still the best option here, although there is a chance with how short pre-patch fights are sometimes, that Feral Frenzy might show up.
Best Rotation for Feral Druid in Pre-Patch
Rotation is a bit of a misnomer, at it's core the spec operates on a priority system. You'll want to maintain bleeds and then spend any extra resources on
s.
Your main priority will be to maintain
: You'll want to make sure you apply
with
and
if possible.
Your next priority will be to maintain
: Where possible you'll want this to be snapshotted with the Stealth bonus from
and
, but this will not always be possible due to the duration on
and the cooldowns on
and
.
Any extra combo points will be spent on
.
Last but not least, generate combo points with
.
Outside of this rotation, you'll also want to generate
stacks when those drop off, which will be every 2nd cycle. The easiest way to conceptualize the Feral rotation as a whole is as set's of cycles, with each cycle starting at 0 CPs and finishing with casting a finisher. As such, half your cycles will be used to generate
stacks, where you'll want to cast 3 different generators rather than just
.

Shadowlands Feral Rotation page

Best Stats for Feral Druid in Pre-Patch
Nothing's really changed stat-wise for Feral for a long time and it doesn't look likely to change in Shadowlands.
Crit is our most efficient resource generating stat so that will likely remain king of the hill.
Mastery and Vers are essentially the same stat. Mastery doesn't increase all of your damage but it's a more efficient stat than Versatility which does increase all of your damage. These two stats are likely to be pretty close together
Haste is another resource generation stat. It's less efficient than Crit but at the start of an expansion it's likely to be a reasonably good stat.
Best Azerite Traits for Feral Druid in Pre-Patch
Azerite will only work for a short period in the pre-patch and goes away when the expansion launches so enjoy it while it lasts! It's likely that a lot of the traits we already like will still be good choices during the pre-patch.
There's nothing on the line during pre-patch so have fun with it, if you think of something whacky give it a shot!
: A trait everyone should be familiar with, applying
increases the damage of
and
, and with the
changes this is even better than it once was.
: Crit during
, we like crit, this gives a lot of crit.
: An unpopular trait through most of the expansion, but with
changes this may be an attractive choice, especially if it gives you an additional usage of
during the fight!
: Another unpopular trait during most of BFA that might also see some use during pre-patch thanks to the
changes.
Best Essences for Feral Druid in Pre-Patch
This is a short and sweet highlight of the best Essences to use during the pre-patch for Raid and M+. Essences, much like Azerite, don't work while leveling, so don't worry about them after launch. It's likely that the current best continue to be best, but again, have fun with it: if you think of a whacky combination of Essences and Azerite just roll with it and enjoy yourself.
Likely Best
- Who doesn't like damage?
- Who doesn't like critting big?
- Same principle as
Maybe some fun?
- With the
changes this might be entertaining, see just how high uptime on

Just hoping for Feral to not be complete garbage like it has been in almost every expansion in PvE when compared to other dps.

So Rake no longer snapshots with Bloodtalons?

Just replace savage roar with something actually fun already. It's been years. Nobody likes it. Everyone hated similar "combo point damage increase buffs" no matter the class. Remember when paladins had one? Everyone rejoiced when it was gone.

Waiting for the day the Devs realize Feral needs a rework, complete overhaul, and changed away from the energy/CP system. Give us something unique!

BloodTalons question.
When it says 3 different cp generators it means that I have to use RAKE>SHRED>THRASH (in no particular order) to get the buff?
