How to Play Fire Mage in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
If you have ever wondered why the saying is "fight fire with fire" instead of "fight everything with fire" then maybe Fire Mage is the specialization for you. From the fire we stand in during raids, to the
s of the
s, fire has always been one of the most deadly schools of magic in World of Warcraft. Fire Mage has always been known for its offensive focus, high damage, and cleave in the form of
. If you are looking for a specialization that lets you turn your enemies into bonfires with legs, spreading their flame to other nearby enemies, then look no further.
Fire Mage is one of a handful of ranged caster specializations in World of Warcraft that focuses on cleave rather than spread damage over time. It is a very high burst playstyle, as most of your damage comes during your
. Outside of cooldowns, the playstyle revolves around its stable flow of generating
then
from critical strikes while
burns your target for additional fire damage. Once you have stoked the flames for long enough,
can be used to spread your fire to nearby foes.
In theory, all Mages use
Mana
as a resource, but this is just a front since Mana is mostly irrelevant. Your
real
resource as a Fire mage is your
buff and
ability, Hot Streak is fuel for the abilities that cause the most damage and Phoenix Flames is used to spread that damage to nearby enemies. However, Fire magic isn't a Fire Mage's only tool. Iconic Mage utility spells like
,
, and
allow Mages of all specializations to control and outplay their enemies while their friends burn.

beginner's guide

How Different Does Fire Mage Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
If you exclude the borrowed power from systems within expansions that Mages always seem to rely on, very little has changed for Fire. This means that from a playstyle perspective, there is little to no learning curve. This is especially true for pre-patch since things like Essences, Azerite, and special items such as the
or
are still going to be a part of the gameplay (for now).
The main difference you will notice in Shadowlands is the loss of
damage since
Corruption will cease to benefit players in the pre-patch
. Additionally,
will only spread when you activate
, but only to 8 targets. Another difference only affects Mages using
since it has been changed to be a single charge, but it automatically drops when you activate
.
Since
is currently a talent that very few players use currently, think of Fire Mage in pre-patch as effectively the same, but with an additional spell to spread ignite, and a couple of other spells added as well.
New Abilities for Fire Mage in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
“New” might not be the right word, since all of the abilities returning to Fire have been baseline at some point before.
is a great addition to the Fire toolkit as a solution to the lack of burst AoE against low health enemies
is added back as a utility cooldown that causes decreased damage and threat mitigation
is baseline and used to spread
returns as a utility cooldown to restore health and position
Aside from
, these "new" abilities don't have much impact besides what we have already covered with
spreading
.
Arcane Explosion
coming back for Fire is very exciting. It fills a niche for the specialization that has long been left empty and it makes Mana an actual resource. Fire’s AoE ability comes from spreading a big
, but that requires having a single large target to build and spread the
from; it only looks good now because we have the tools to create burst windows to build that massive
. Without that, Fire didn't have the tools to cope in its base kit, and this was very obvious in low-keystone-level dungeons or when facing many small mobs in Battle for Azeroth.
Mana has been mostly useless or a source of frustration to Fire mage in most recent memory. Mana as a resource for Fire was a part of the game for two main reasons, lore and
. In actual gameplay, it was irrelevant, unless you had buffs to steal. This meant that we as mages essentially had a resource that only functioned as fuel for a utility ability. At best it was bland, at worst it caused some serious issues (like running out of Mana on long fights in Legion).
The Shadowlands design for
is fantastic because the ability does a lot of upfront damage, to the point where it is competitive with the normal AoE routines, but also has some severe limitations in the form of its Mana cost. Having the spell be the best way to blast a lot of targets with burst damage but having it cost a ton of Mana fits really well for a specialization known for high burst damage.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Fire Mage in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Target caps
don't really affect Fire Mage for the most part, aside from
, which is capped at 8 targets when spread by
. All other spells remain with caps similar to before pre-patch.
Types of Target Caps
There are three types of Target caps in Shadowlands: Soft-Cap, Hard-Cap and Square Root Scaling.
Soft-Cap: Targets uncapped. Damage capped. Splits damage equally among all targets.
Hard-Cap: Targets capped. Damage capped.
Square Root Scaling: Targets uncapped. Damage uncapped. Each new target increases damage at a smaller and smaller rate.

How Strong is Fire Mage in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
At the end of Ny'alotha, Fire Mage was absolutely god-tier due to mastery stacking and cleave. Losing Corruption will certainly have a negative effect on Fire Mage in the pre-patch if we compare it to where the spec was (since the meta was stacking Mastery), but it's still going to be very powerful in situations where stacked enemies need to be cleaved down. Since Ny'alotha will still be a very cleave-centric raid I believe Fire Mage will still be very powerful so long as there are enemies to spread Ignite to.
In Mythic+, I expect the specialization to lose a lot of its burst, which is the main reason why Fire gets play. Due to this, I don't think Fire will be as
hot
. As always, a specialization's potential is relative to other classes and since many other specializations are also losing some of their power due to target caps or changes, maybe it won't be as bad as expected.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Fire Mage?
Ignite Spread
As stated before, this isn't all that complicated.
won't spread until you tell it to with
.
is a cooldown which means you can't just spread every ignite, you will need to decide when it's appropriate. Typically, you will want to use these charges in tandem with add spawns and cooldowns.
Arcane Explosion
is the button to press when you need uncapped AoE or to finish off a bunch of targets that are low health. In Ny'alotha and Mythic+ you will want to use this spell a lot when there are many targets to hit and you don't have time for
spreading. Think of it similarly to
.
Aside from these two examples, there isn't much else to cover, just remember that
can be used to mitigate incoming damage.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Fire Mage in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The loss of Corruption puts an end to the
100% crit build
which was a blast while it lasted. It also effectively kills Mastery scaling for Single Target, bringing the class back to where it was at the end of Eternal Palance. Stat weights will change, but unless you were rocking 100% passive crit before the pre-patch, not much is changing.
I would argue that the biggest change is going to be the removal of all those annoying Corruption effects like
and
. Good riddance.

Detailed Fire Mage Builds
This build is the standard build to run in raid, or dungeons where most of the time is spent fighting bosses. In cases where multiple targets will remain stationary, choose Flame patch. For cases where many low health targets join the fight abruptly (Hivemind for instance) choose Living Bomb.
This build focuses on AoE damage. With the changes to Ignite spreading, and lower general levels of Mastery, Flame Patch should be taken in most cases. Living Bomb can be used if there is an extremely high number of targets. Use Incanter's Flow over Rune of Power if you need to move a lot.
Best Rotation for Fire Mage in Pre-Patch
The standard rotation for Fire Mages is very simple and straightforward, but more information using various talent setups, cooldowns, and other advanced tips can be found in the
Fire Mage Rotation Guide

Best Stats for Fire Mage in Pre-Patch
Fire Mages primarily favor Haste in the pre-patch. The value of mastery is tied to how often you are able to spread
to other targets and the cooldown of
. Due to the changes that have been made to how ignite spreads,
is stronger relative to
in AoE and mastery is a worse stat generally.

Best Azerite Traits for Spec Class in Pre-Patch
The removal of corruption in the pre-patch will reduce the superiority of
Blaster Master
, but it still remains the best Azerite trait to stack.
Blaster Master
is the best Fire Mage trait.
Wildfire
and
Firemind
are also strong, but should not be prioritized over
Blaster Master
.
Clockwork Heart
is very strong if you always use your cooldowns while it is active, which is once per minute, but its availability is limited.
is also a very strong trait, especially since the corruption requirement is removed in pre-patch.
Best Essences for Fire Mage in Pre-Patch
Lucid vs Minute Mage
The best Essences to run depend on which version of Fire Mage you would like to play. For most people reading this guide, I recommend running the two minute
build. This is the more standard mage build and has less of a barrier to entry when it comes to collecting Essences.
The Minute Mage build focuses on reducing the cooldown of
using
and
to get twice as many Combustions as the Lucid build, but alternates between strong and weak
s. It requires specific ranks of Essences to work correctly. This build is often used in M+, or situations where you want to have burst AoE every minute. My
video guide from March 2020
for this build is still relevant in the pre-patch, and is a good starting point if you are interested in this playstyle.
Major Essences
The major Essence you use will be one of two options.
remains the best Major Essence to use in the pre-patch.
is also competitive for the
Minute Mage build
but isn't recommended for new players.
This build is the most common and easiest to start with. I recommend it for newer players and people who aren't sure which build to play.

Minor Essences
Three additional Minor Essence slots can be unlocked over time, providing additional benefit. The Minors listed below are broken into two main groups depending on your build. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.
Use on: Cooldown syncing
The Minor effect has a proc chance of about 15%. The proc is one of the strongest Minors currently available for Fire Mages, and this Essence is far ahead of any other Minors.
Effect on gameplay
Watch your Fire Blast charges and make sure you don't over-cap them - always have one on cooldown.

Effect on gameplay
If your haste is low, it may be worth stacking this up before beginning your Combustion rotation. Keep the buff up by using Fire Blast during your Rune of Power cast.
This minor is required, without it your cooldowns will not line up properly.

This Minor is also key to a short-cooldown Combustion build utilizing

So, when do I spread my ignite? The dmg is going to be very small and most trash will die before it is worth spreading. So wth was the point of the change?
Will we all need to make a weak aura to track the optimal ignite to spread? But then with nothing adding to those, the dmg is will fall off very quickly? Ignite dmg decays. So, do we just ignore spreading it?

The "Minute Mage" tab in the Essences section has all the Lucid Dreams text copy pasted into it too, pretty sure this is an error.
Also, I think there should be another tab in the Talents section for the Vision/Kindling 1min build. I'd imagine that you would _always_ want to run Flame On in that build.
