How to Play a Holy Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Holy Paladins are healers that gain strength through the power of the Light. Holy Paladins use powerful healing spells, blessings, and auras to keep themselves and their allies healed through dire situations while bringing the fight to their enemies, damaging them with Holy Light. Holy Paladins specifically focus on Healing, and in World of Warcraft they fit into the role of Healer. Whereas Retribution focuses on damage and Protection focuses on protecting allies from harm, your role as a Holy Paladin is to keep your party or raid alive through the toughest of times. Holy Paladins are among the most desired class in the game due to their large number of support abilities, making them an asset to any raid or party. Whether you are solo questing, world-first raiding, high-end raiding, or doing the occasional mythic+, you won't have trouble finding a group that needs a Paladin!
Paladins primarily focus on single-target nuke heals, allowing them to excel at triage and spot healing. Using mana and Holy Power in a generator/spender type of rotation, they excel at spot healing and on occasion using their melee weapons to deal some damage. Paladins generally wield a one-handed mace or sword, and a shield. On occasion, there may be a two-handed mace available to be used. As wielders of the Light clad in heavy plate armor, Paladins aren't very mobile. What they lack in mobility, however, they make up for in durability, having a plethora of survivability options to keep themselves safe, so that they can focus on their true task of keeping everyone else alive.
Paladins have one of the strongest fantasies of any class in World of Warcraft, going all the way back to Warcraft 3. Apart from the core mechanics of each spec, all paladins share unique abilities such as blessings, which help allies in different ways. They also have auras which radiate your energy empowering nearby players, and iconic abilities such as
圣盾术
and
圣疗术
giving you a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of battle in your favor!

How Different Does Holy Paladin Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Holy Paladins saw a fairly large series of changes in Shadowlands. After Battle for Azeroth, a particular Azerite Trait invented a new play-style for Holy Paladin that truly embraced the idea of the "Battle Healer", allowing Holy Paladins to get into the fight and weave in melee damaging abilities with their core healing rotation. This playstyle has a very similar counterpart being made available through a selection of talents, while still maintaining a more traditional Paladin play style. Additionally, Holy Paladins see the return of the
Holy Power
resource. In addition to mana, Paladins will be generating Holy Power to spend on powerful abilities which creates a builder/spender type of flow to overall gameplay. Auras are being made baseline for all paladins and as such the Holy Paladin's talent tree is being shaken up significantly. All of this will make playing a Holy Paladin feel distinctly different, yet somewhat familiar with the release of the Shadowlands pre-patch.
The major difference you will notice immediately is the introduction of a hefty mana cost to
十字军打击
. This change will mean that paladins who are familiar with the
圣光闪烁
play-style will be running Out of Mana (OOM) far more quickly than before. In addition to this, you will be playing around Holy Power, of which your
十字军打击
s, and
神圣震击
s generate. These are spent on either
黎明之光
or
荣耀圣令
and you can hold up to 5, meaning you will be weaving these spells into your core rotation regularly.
With the removal of the Corruption system, Paladins will feel a fair bit slower since we won't have nearly as high uptime on
复仇之怒
. This also comes with a significant loss in throughput as the

Corruption was very powerful for paladins in particular. All in all, the spec should feel similar in terms of pace to other versions of
圣光闪烁
before the Corruption system was introduced, albeit with new mana constraints and a bit more depth through Holy Power.
New Abilities for Holy Paladins in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Baseline Abilities
NEW
- This iconic paladin spell returns for all Paladin specs. Having this fan-favorite ability back will give paladins some options to help execute low health targets, while also giving some mana-free Holy Power generation. It isn't until you begin leveling in Shadowlands that you unlock the ability to use this spell during
复仇之怒
, but until then its still an excellent ability to have back for general questing, dungeons, raids or PvP.
NEW
- This spell is one of our two main ways to convert Holy Power into healing. This is the single target nuke option; it does an enormous amount of healing. It is essentially a super-charged
神圣震击
.
REWORKED
- This spell is the AoE healing alternative to the aforementioned
荣耀圣令
both spells do roughly the same healing so you will need to constantly evaluate whether you want to do AoE healing, or single target healing.
正义盾击
- Although a somewhat niche ability, this is the only way we can effectively turn Holy Power into damage. Baseline, it provides us with a small amount of survivability. Although it will be rare to use this ability it can certainly be handy in AoE damage situations, or while solo questing.
NEW
- This ability is somewhat niche, it is rare that CC is used in modern World of Warcraft, but having this ability back baseline may be useful in situations where you need that CC on undead mobs, or in PvP situations on certain pets.
REWORKED

has been redesigned, however, don't get too excited. The change doesn't really change how you play the class much. It essentially means that your priority compared to previous iterations has been reversed. Using an

will now do more healing, while using it on a

has been slightly redesigned. It now has a passive radius of 40 yds, but applies a 3% damage reduction to all allies within it. Overall this is a buff in larger groups, but for solo play is a slight nerf.

- This is a re-introduction of a previous mechanic, where we could increase the mounted speed of our allies, instead of just ourselves. This can be helpful in some scenarios such as in battlegrounds where you can help your group get to the objectives faster.

- This is a new aura. Although you will use this rarely as

is so powerful, if part of your strategy involves letting people die, this can be of value. Note: this spell is on the Global Cooldown (GCD) and therefore, if you switch auras before someone dies, you could have possibly saved the person who died. It is not advised to let your allies die on purpose =)

has been redesigned to have a longer cooldown, and instead focus on very heavy Holy Power generation. This makes it a far more powerful cooldown overall.

- This Azerite Trait returns as a talent. This can be stacked with the existing Azerite Trait during the pre-patch, and I recommend that you do so.

How Do AoE Target Caps affect Holy Paladins in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
The target cap, in and of itself, has no impact on Holy Paladins. All spells that previously had a target cap maintain that cap. For a quick refresher here is a recap of what spells have a target cap for Holy Paladins.

How Do the GCD Changes Affect Holy Paladins in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Many spells were added to the Global Cooldown (GCD) with the release of Battle for Azeroth. Blizzard has begun walking back some of those decisions. This is fairly important for Holy Paladins as several of our abilities were initially impacted by this. The below spells are being removed from the GCD once again:

These spells coming off of the GCD is fairly important. When they were on the GCD you would find yourself in scenarios where something unexpected would happen, and you would have the cooldown be available to save someone, but incurring that 1.5 sec GCD would mean they die before you could use your now empowered heal. This change should make healing as a Holy Paladin feel much smoother than it did in Battle for Azeroth.
How Strong are Holy Paladins in the Shadowlands Pre-patch?
Truthfully, there is no answer to this question. Tuning has been happening leading right up to the pre-patch and many-core mechanics that are very powerful for Paladin are missing in Shadowlands. With the level/stat/ilvl squish, bosses will be adjusted, and, as a healer, the boss and its mechanics are a determining factor in how strong paladins are, or are not. It is entirely possible that
圣光闪烁
traits combined with the talent will be very powerful. Shortly after the pre-patch is live, bosses are tuned and we have a better idea where everything fits. Right now it is impossible to predict whether or not paladins will be strong, or weak in the pre-patch.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Holy Paladins?
Holy Power
The first and most noticeable change is the re-introduction of Holy Power. Holy Power is a system where abilities such as
神圣震击
, and
十字军打击
generate one Holy Power per use, and you spend that Holy Power in groups of 3 on
荣耀圣令
or
黎明之光
. This system may feel strange if you have not played with it before. The main source of gameplay will come from having the option to pool 5 Holy Power, while also ensuring no Holy Power goes to waste.
For example, if you know a damage event is going to occur you can get to 5 Holy Power just before it hits, use a
荣耀圣令
/
黎明之光
->
神圣震击
->
荣耀圣令
/
黎明之光
for a burst of healing. This provides a lot of depth for gameplay.
This playstyle will feel somewhat familiar for paladins who played in Legion and BFA. Instead of having a flat 12 sec cooldown on spells such as Light of Dawn, you are restricted by Holy Power, which is a pseudo-cooldown. The rate at which you generate Holy Power outside of cooldowns is pretty consistent.
Crusader Strike
The other big gameplay change will come from
十字军打击
's increased mana cost. This change ensures that even Paladins must once again concern themselves with mana, and mana management. A single
十字军打击
now costs as much mana as a
神圣震击
, despite doing damage instead of healing. It will still be necessary to use
神圣震击
s, due to the Holy Power generation and synergy with
圣光闪烁
/
十字军之力
. Basically, if you weren't paying attention to mana before, you may want to buy a few mana potions.
Glimmer of Light
You won't be losing your Azerite Traits. In fact you are gaining a
圣光闪烁
talent that works well with those Azerite traits. This build will likely still retain its power until Shadowlands.
It remains to be seen where the standard "Caster" paladin playstyle will land in the pre-patch but there is a good chance
圣光闪烁
will dominate. If you were one of the people who disliked the
圣光闪烁
playstyle, the standard caster paladin will be more potent than before, and could even be the dominant playstyle come Shadowlands itself. The gap between
圣光闪烁
and Caster paladin will be significantly closer than before.
Infusion of Light
As mentioned above,
圣光灌注
was redesigned. Now it incentivizes you to use a slow beefy
圣光术
, and if you don't have the time for that, you can use a
圣光闪现
and it will be slightly more mana efficient. This however isn't as important a change in pre-patch as we will still largely be ignoring
圣光灌注
proc's, favoring
十字军打击
s and
神圣震击
s above all else. If you happen to need to use either spell as a filler, be aware that the thought process has essentially been reversed.
Cooldown Usage
With the redesign of
神圣复仇者
, it becomes slightly more challenging to use the two abilities together. This means you will most likely aim to split them apart. If you use them together you won't be able to use the flow of
十字军打击
->
神圣震击
as effectively, instead it becomes
神圣震击
->
荣耀圣令
->
十字军打击
reducing their effectiveness.
For this reason, it is advised you split these two abilities apart. Each ability is strong on its own and should give you the best results.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Holy Paladins in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The loss of
不可言喻的真相
will have a large impact on Paladins performance. The high uptime on
复仇之怒
is one of the key reasons that Paladins are so powerful in Battle for Azeroth. Having this uptime reduced will slow down the overall pace of gameplay, change cooldown timings and, just in general, reduce power.
The biggest change will be, instead of just pressing
复仇之怒
pretty well on cooldown, you will want to plan out your
复仇之怒
's to line up with damage events. This should feel familiar however, as this is how most other healers use cooldowns and how Paladins did before
不可言喻的真相
.
Your rotation will also feel slower because when those
不可言喻的真相
procs happened your core rotation would speed up significantly, like a huge haste buff. This won't happen anymore, but again
不可言喻的真相
wasn't up 100% of the time to begin with so this shouldn't feel foreign.
Best Talent Builds for Holy Paladin in Pre-patch
As our talent tree saw some significant changes, our talents will be slightly different,although the logic behind these talents hasn't changed much. Due to the high power of
圣光闪烁
you will still be looking to maximize your
神圣震击
usage.
This build has a couple of situational talents:
Level 25: All talents on this row have some viability.
神圣棱镜
will provide the most value while providing the smallest impact on your rotation. Due to higher haste levels than you will have in Shadowlands, you may be losing value from
圣光审判
. However
圣光审判
will be the more mana efficient option, so ultimately both talents are viable. If you are having mana problems,
圣光审判
is certainly the play if you want the damage or find yourself with lots of dead time in your core ability usage. Otherwise
神圣棱镜
will provide slightly more raw HPS.
Level 50: In some encounters, you may opt to take Beacon of Faith, as you already have a fair amount of
圣光闪烁
healing from Azerite. However, if tanks aren't taking a significant amount of damage, or only one tank is active, you will be better suited with
圣光闪烁
.
The focus of this build is the same, however some small modifications. Mostly Rule of Law is far less useful in M+ so you take unbreakable spirit. Judgment of light is preferred as you can stack up the buff on multiple allies that act as a pseudo-HoT while you are dealing damage.
Best Rotation for Holy Paladin in Pre-Patch
Paladins don't really have a core rotation. It is more a priority system than anything. Due to the ebb and flow of combat, sometimes you may not need to do any healing, while at other times you may need to pool resources (Holy Power) for a certain damage event. Below we will cover some things to keep in mind for optimal usage.
Holy Power
The first thing to remember is you never want to waste Holy Power; your Holy Power abilities such as
黎明之光
, and
荣耀圣令
do a large amount of healing. Constantly be watching and ensure that if you are at 5 Holy Power you spend it before you generate the next Holy Power. Keep in mind,
神圣震击
and
十字军打击
both generate Holy Power.
Crusader Strike Charges
The second priority is to never waste a
十字军打击
charge, this will be slightly easier without
不可言喻的真相
, however is still a concern. You want to ensure you always get the full 1.5 sec Cooldown Reduction from
十字军之力
on your
神圣震击
s, while ensuring you never sit fully at 2 charges available.
Holy Shock Usage
Both Holy Power and
十字军打击
play into
神圣震击
usage, but similarly to
十字军打击
, you never want to be sitting on
神圣震击
for too long. If
神圣震击
is available, use it. Either on a player, or an enemy target for damage. This is the #1 most important thing to keep in mind as a Holy Paladin. If you are losing out on
神圣震击
s, that is less Holy Power, less
圣光闪烁
procs active, and less Triggers.
Filler Talents
Spells and talents such as
赋予信仰
,
神圣棱镜
,
审判
and Light's Hammer are essentially filler spells. If you have them you should use them when you are not sacrificing Holy Power,
十字军打击
usage, or
神圣震击
usage for them.
Holy Light/Flash of Light
These spells can be cast if you need to heal someone and no other spells are available. Just keep in mind, with the current playstyle in pre-patch, that you will find few instances to do this. If you don't need damage, and have the spare global this is what you would do. Consider these spells your "filler" spells. As an aside,
殉道者之光
usage is the same as normal. Use this only when nothing else is available and you are moving or you need a heal instantly to save a life.
Best Stats for Holy Paladin in Pre-Patch
Stat priority is pretty much the same for Holy Paladins in the pre-patch. All stats are effectively equal. You want to get a comfortable amount of Haste to make your rotation flow with few gaps. After that all stats are viable, and you should focus on item level.
Haste
Mastery=Versatility=Crit
in Mythic+ you should de-prioritize Mastery, as it provides no damage contribution. However, it is still a solid throughput stat, and shouldn't be entirely ignored.
Best Azerite Traits for Holy Paladin in Pre-Patch
Our priority for Azerite trait's hasn't changed either. You are still looking to obtain 3x
圣光闪烁
, 1x
圣光赦令
, and then either 2x
复仇者之力
or 2x
不屈审判
in mythic+ or damage situations.
圣光闪烁
is still incredibly potent and should be stacked. This can combine with the
圣光闪烁
talent, for even more healing.
圣光赦令
: You will still want at least one
圣光赦令
trait, as it will still increase the duration of your
复仇之怒
. Additionally, now that we spend holy power this will provide a small amount of damage for us in the pre-patch!
复仇者之力
will still provide a large amount of healing in our burst windows. Despite lower uptimes on
复仇之怒
after losing
不可言喻的真相
, this trait provides a large amount of secondary stats when we want them the most.
Best Essences for Holy Paladin in Pre-Patch
Essences for Holy Paladin aren't changing significantly. As a refresher here are the recommended essences.
Major:

will still be your major essence of choice. The extra
复仇之怒
duration is still invaluable, especially after losing
不可言喻的真相
Minor:
Any combination of the below 4 essences will be good. Returning players may not be able to quickly get

, and that is the recommended choice. But the other alternatives are also very potent.

For essences; why not try to work Lucid Dreams into a minor slot over Well of Existence? While not a thing to be relied on, due to how much mana is currently used, even by Glimmer-dins, the mana refund might help a little, even if it take 5 Crusader Strikes to get 1 free one, that is one more holy power/holy shock that you are able to get in plus a nice little vers buff to go along with it.

This is a great guide! Thank you so much for it! I really appreciate the objective perspective in it, since there seemed to be a lot of fear mongering about HPal not being viable in SL from Beta testers and it was really disconcerting.

The entire Holy Paladin Talent tree is a lackbuster now.
Why do shatter something that was working as intended?
Tune the numbers instead. World of Glory is great but you need more "Range" generation of spells for it to work. Let's be honest here keep Paladin too long in melee range in pvp he can't keep up not with the current build. It might work "Okay" perhaps even good in the late expansion for PVE but that's how far will it go. Borrowed power better make the spec work for really enjoying a melee healer. As for now Holy Paladin spec is as worse as it get's. I literally tested Disc Priest and Hpal while leveling through battlegrounds the difference is just beyond me. While Disc Excels fluently and Hpal feels completely as being in wheelchair and I can play both now imagine how many Rookies will get rejections in a game who are going "First time on Hpal". There just isn't a reason to take Hpal expect World 1st race for "Devo Aura". Sorta the same as DH for the range buff but we speak about a Healer here.
