How to Play Marksmanship Hunter in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Marksmanship Hunters are the only Hunter spec that have the option of not using a pet. It's typically the go-to spec for any player that does not like using or managing pets, but still want to play Hunter. It's typically referred to as the "sniper" spec with slower, heavy-hitting shots and an extended range. In Shadowlands, Marksmanship has transitioned into a more bursty class, having a "Burst and Reload" type feeling to its rotation.
At its core, Marksmanship uses
to enable
while using abilities such as
and
to regenerate Focus. Our talents such as
and
give us some burst AoE potential, which is a nice change of pace compared to BFA. For the most part, though, Marksmanship plays very similarly to how it currently does in BFA with a few minor tweaks. If you're familiar with Marksmanship already, you'll be able to transition with ease.

How Different Does Marksmanship Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Marksmanship Hunter in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch will feel very similar to how it's felt through all of BFA. Most people have been playing Beast Mastery in BFA since Marksmanship hasn't been in a great spot, but luckily some of the new talents and changes coming in pre-patch help to improve Marksmanship's gameplay.
We've undergone a few major changes that have dramatically changed our toolkit. The changes are primarily talent-based with a few baseline modifications. This means that you'll be able to experience a good chunk of the changes in pre-patch and get a jump start on learning the new abilities and interactions. Some dead talents have been changed and moved around so we have a slightly different setup compared to BFA. The other major change for Marksmanship Hunters lies in our Focus generation.
,
, and
have had their Focus costs increased but our base Focus regeneration has been buffed slightly. This means our damage profile is much more bursty, with periods of low damage Focus generation.
For the most part, Marksmanship in Shadowlands plays very similarly to its BFA counterpart with a few minor changes. Rotations stay the same for the most part, but a few things will change the way we play which I'll detail in the sections below. Due to some new talents and interactions, some things will change during pre-patch such as Stats, Azerite, and Essences.
New Abilities for Marksmanship in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
New Abilities
With the mass un-pruning that has come with Shadowlands, some old friends have returned to our toolkit.
NEW
- Scares a beast, causing it to run in fear for up to 20 sec. Damage caused may interrupt the effect. Only one beast can be feared at a time.
NEW
- Take direct control of your pet and see through its eyes for 1 min.
NEW
- You attempt to finish off a wounded target. Only usable on enemies with less than 20% health.
NEW
- Removes 1 Enrage and 1 Magic effect from an enemy target.
Unfortunately, Hunter sort of got the short end of the stick with un-pruning changes. While they're iconic Hunter abilities,
and
are essentially useless in practical play. Both of these abilities have some relevance in PvP and questing, but don't have much merit in raiding or dungeons aside from niche uses. The return of
is an excellent quality of life change for us. Now we don't have to rely on our pets to purge or soothe targets. Perhaps the best ability and only relevant DPS ability returning to us is
! We now have an execute baseline, which gives the spec some added depth - something we really lacked in BFA.
Baseline Ability Updates
Besides new spells, we've had some major changes to our baseline toolkit.
Marksmanship's base Focus regen has been increased.
3
5 Focus per sec.
- A quick shot that deals Arcane damage.
15
20 Focus.
- Fires several missiles, hitting your current target and
all
up to 5 enemies within 10 yards.
15
20 Focus.
- A powerful aimed shot that deals Physical damage.
30
35 Focus.
- Shoot a stream of
10
7 shots at your target over
3
2 sec, dealing Physical damage. Usable while moving.
- Fire a magical projectile, tethering the enemy and any other enemies within 5 yards for 10 sec, rooting them in place for 8 sec if they move more than 5 yards from the arrow. Binding Shot is now baseline for Marksmanship Hunters.
- Misdirect all threat you cause to the targeted party or raid member,
for the next 8 sec
beginning with your next attack within 30 sec and lasting for 8 sec.
- Revives your pet, returning it to life with 100% of its base health.
2 sec
4 sec cast
- Apply Hunter's Mark to the target,
increasing all damage you deal to the marked target by 5%. The target can
causing the target to always be seen and tracked by the Hunter. Only one Hunter's Mark can be applied at a time. Cooldown none.
- Reduces the cooldown of your Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire by 60% and causes Aimed Shot to cast 50% faster for 15 sec. Trueshot has been removed from the GCD.
There's a mix of both good and bad changes here. Some of these changes such as
,
,
and
are amazing quality of life changes. On the flip side, an increased
cast time and the Focus changes really hurt us. Adding 2 additional seconds to the cast time of Revive Pet even further discourages Marksmanship Hunters from ever using a pet. The
modification is both good and bad. It's good in the sense that we spend less time channeling, but it also generates slightly less Focus due to producing fewer shots.
There are quite a few focus changes, so let's sum up. Combining all of our focus changes, we gain a net positive focus change. While focus gains are positive, the removal of
really hurts us during
. In fact, Marksmanship has some major focus issues during Trueshot. While we are flooded with
and
procs, our focus gains during Trueshot remain stagnant, causing a severe drought while Trueshot is active. In its current state, we're forced to choose between ignoring Precise Shots or to cap on Aimed Shot charges, producing a fundamental flaw in the baseline rotation.
Talent Tree Overhaul
Our talent tree has undergone a facelift, introducing some new abilities, and rearranging a few of our previous ones.
Check out the new talents in the
talent calculator
NEW
- A two-headed shot that hits your primary target and another nearby target, dealing Nature damage to one and Frost damage to the other. Replaces Arcane Shot.
NEW
- Targets rooted by Binding Shot deal 20% less damage to you for 8 sec after the root effect ends.
NEW
- Kill Shot has 2 charges, and causes Aimed Shot to recharge 50% faster for 3 sec.
REMOVED
-
A powerful shot which deals (112.5% of Attack power)% Physical damage to the target and up to Physical damage to all enemies between you and the target. Piercing Shot ignores the target's armor.
-
Aimed Shot has a 100% chance to reduce the Focus cost of your next Arcane Shot or Multi-Shot by 100%.
Your ranged special attack critical strikes cause the target to bleed for an additional 15% of the damage dealt over 6 sec.
- Fire a shot that poisons your target, causing them to take Nature damage instantly and additional Nature damage over
12
18 sec.
- Aimed Shot deals 50% bonus damage to targets who are above
80% or below 20%
70% health.
-
Using Steady Shot reduces the cast time of Steady Shot by 20%, sticking up to 2 times. Using any other shot removes this effect.
Using Steady Shot twice in a row increases your Haste by 7% for 15 sec.
-
Rapid Fire now lasts 20% longer.
Rapid Fire's damage is increased by 15%, and Rapid Fire also causes your next Aimed Shot to cast 30% faster.
- Chimaera Shot, Arcane Shot and Multi-Shot have a
20%
30% chance to reduce the cooldown of Rapid Fire by 5 sec.
- Casting Chimaera Shot, Arcane Shot, or Multi-Shot reduces the cooldown of Trueshot by 2.5 sec.
- Your ranged auto attacks have a
5%
8% chance to trigger Lock and Load, causing your next Aimed Shot to cost no Focus and be instant.
-
Your auto-shots have a 25% chance to cause a volley of arrows to rain down around the target, dealing Physical damage to each enemy within 8 yards.
Rain a volley of arrows down over 6 sec, dealing Physical damage to any enemy in the area, and gain the effects of
for as long as Volley is active. 45-sec cooldown.
There's a lot to digest here, considering that our whole talent tree got a makeover. What we end up picking will largely depend on final tuning. Without going through all of the changes individually, I'll highlight some of the more important ones.
The change to
is both good and bad. The new bleed effect is really strong, especially in AoE, and has some nice synergy with Critical Strike. The biggest negative of these talent changes is the loss of the previous
which gave us free casts of
and
. In BFA, we essentially depended on that to make our rotation flow smoothly. With it gone, we have some serious Focus issues in our kit, especially during
. Additionally, with its removal, we now have very little incentive to use all of our
. I'll go into more detail on this later on in the guide.
I also wanted to highlight the level 35 talent row.
,
, and
are all new interactions that have different applications.
gives a nice bit of passive Haste and slightly changes our rotation, forcing us to maintain its buff by casting two
s at least every 15 sec (which we'll have to do anyway due to our Focus changes).
is just a passive buff to
damage and a small quality of life change to
's long cast time. For pre-patch, Streamline will be pretty good due to
,
, and
, but it loses a lot of value once those Azerite traits are gone in Shadowlands.
is a brand new interaction that replaces
completely. It's a solid talent that bolsters our cleave damage (which we severely lacked in BFA). All in all, the new talents in this row actually give us a ton of opportunity to customize our damage depending on what the fight calls for. It's a very good change of pace considering this entire row was largely dead during BFA.
For the most part, our talent changes were positive. The few negative changes such as
and
are outweighed by the majority of good changes. Marksmanship went from having a single build for most PvE content to having multiple possible builds for single target, cleave, and AoE scenarios.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Marksmanship in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Lucky for us, we're quite used to the AoE cap already! We were one of two total classes that had a cap in BFA so it's about time everyone joins the party! In regards to
, nothing has changed. This means that both
and
are still capped at 6 total targets. Unfortunately, we've had some additional abilities that have been capped outlined below.
- Multi-Shot has been capped at 5 targets.
- Explosive Shot has been capped at 6 targets.
- Barrage has been capped at 8 targets.
These aren't really too impactful relative to many other classes. Since we've been playing with the target cap for years, we really shouldn't notice much of a change to our playstyle.
All AoE Target Caps
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Marksmanship in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Come Pre-patch, all major cooldowns for Hunters are now off the global cooldown. For Marksmanship, this means that
is off the GCD! It's not a major change and it doesn't affect our rotation in any major way, but it's a huge quality of life improvement. It does technically give us another second inside our Trueshot window, although that's sort of negated by the high focus costs of
and
now. To use it properly, you'll want to pair it with your Aimed Shot or sync it with
in AoE.
How Strong is Marksmanship Hunter in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Come pre-patch, Marksmanship Hunters will have improved a bit offensively. Our talent makeover has given us many different tools to deal with different types of encounters. While our single target hasn't changed much, we're now able to sufficiently compete with other classes in cleave situations due to
,
, and
. Our AoE has transitioned into a much burstier profile, having cooldowns every 45 sec to 1 min via
,
, and
.
also gives us a ton of passive damage in the form of a bleed that works in both single target and in AoE.
Looking at other aspects of our kit, we've pretty much stayed the same in terms of survivability, but we've gained a ton in the utility department.
has returned, which shifts some of the utility from our pet back to us.
is now baseline which now allows us to take
or
as well.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Marksmanship Hunters?
Trueshot and Focus Changes
Heading into pre-patch, we lose
which gave us free casts of
or
after every cast of
. This loss paired with the Focus nerfs to both Aimed Shot and Arcane Shot severely hinders the flow of our rotation. While focus gains are positive, the removal of Master Marksman really hurts us during
. In fact, Marksmanship has some major focus issues during Trueshot. While we are flooded with Aimed Shot and
procs, our focus gains during Trueshot remain stagnant, causing a severe drought while Trueshot is active. In its current state, we're forced to choose between ignoring Precise Shots or to cap on Aimed Shot charges, producing a fundamental flaw in the baseline rotation. So what does this do to our rotation?
In BFA, we were able to smoothly cast every Aimed Shot while using every
proc without wasting too much. With the Focus changes, we now struggle to cast abilities during
. While we are now forced to cast more
, outside of Trueshot the Focus change doesn't hurt us too much. Inside of Trueshot however, we are overflowing with Aimed Shots and Precise Shots with zero Focus to utilize every proc. Due to this, we're forced to drop either our Precise Shots or to cap on Aimed Shot charges, neither of which feel good.
In terms of DPS relevance, Trueshot is now one of the worst cooldowns in the game. It essentially gives us two additional Aimed Shots every two minutes, which is the equivalent DPS gain to using
. When paired with
, we can use Trueshot to squeeze in additional casts, but overall it's a terrible button to press now. During pre-patch,
synergizes well with
minor, causing
to line up with both
major and
.
traits also give Trueshot some damage. All of these synergies help to bandaid the issue in Pre-patch luckily, but it doesn't get rid of the underlying issues.
AoE and Cleave
Marksmanship AoE has shifted due to our toolkit rework. Our AoE is much more bursty in nature after the changes. Pairing
,
, and
together allows us to unleash an enormous amount of burst within a few short GCDs. The downside of this is, of course, that we have a "recharge" period where we're left with essentially zero Focus, forcing us to recharge while waiting for
charges. Luckily, our burst is frequent enough that it lines up quite well with dungeons and add waves during raid encounters generally.
In terms of cleave, Shadowlands has introduced a fair bit into our toolkit. Marksmanship Hunters now have the best cleave toolkit compared to the other Hunter specs (still fairly mediocre compared to other classes sadly). Volley gives us a bit of two-target burst every 45 seconds (a minute if you pair it with Explosive and Double Tap) and
gives us some sustained two-target damage as long as the targets are within range of each other. In terms of spread cleave,
was buffed which gives us an option to multi-dot if the fight calls for it.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Marksmanship Hunter in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
For single target fights, Marksmanship Hunters typically stacked
with some
pieces, and for AoE fights, we typically went with a more
centric build paired with some more
s. Aside from feeling a bit slower, Marksmanship isn't really affected too hard by the loss of Corruption. We'll of course no longer have the passive damage from Infinite Stars which, in my opinion, will feel much better as our damage will be much more consistent. The major pain point that losing Corruption causes is that we revert back to longer
cast times. It'll hurt our movement slightly, but overall it shouldn't be too impactful.
Best Talent Builds for Marksmanship Hunter in Pre-patch
Since our talents were overhauled a bit, we have some fairly significant changes to which talents you take. We now have two distinct builds to choose from.
This build has three potential choice rows:
Level 30
:
is only the better pick in pure single target, sustained situations. If fights start to get shorter or if any type of AoE is involved in the fight, you should swap to
.
Level 90
:
and
are neck and neck in single target, so be sure to sim yourself. If any burst situations, priority mobs, or planned AoE occurs during the fight, Double Tap is generally the go-to.
Level 100
:
is typically the go-to for single target in this row.
synergizes well with
Minor,
major,
and
. Due to these synergies, Calling the Shots can be comparable to Lock and Load, despite Trueshot's inherent weakness. Similar to the level 30 talent row, if any AoE is present, you should be taking
.
For the AoE build, we have two rows that may vary depending on the encounter:
Level 60
: As you might expect,
starts to fall off the more targets we get.
and
take over in sustained AoE situations. Streamline is generally the go-to talent for AoE, especially if you have any
or
traits. Steady Focus is on par with Streamline depending on how many of these traits you have, so be sure to sim yourself.
Level 90
: Since sustained AoE doesn't really exist,
is typically the go-to option in this Talent row. If mobs tend to live longer, or if you have multiple
or
traits,
may pull ahead. This row is extremely close so I recommend simming yourself to more accurately determine which setup you should run.
Best Rotation for Marksmanship Hunter in Pre-Patch
Single Target
Our base single target rotation hasn't really changed much at its core. It's essentially the exact same priority with
added in.
Use
if your target is below 20% health.
Use
on cooldown.
Use
or
if you have charges of
active.
Use
on cooldown. Try to avoid capping on Aimed Shot charges outside of
. Be sure to consume all of your
procs prior to casting additional Aimed Shots.
Use
or
to avoid capping on Focus.
Use
to generate Focus.
Trueshot Rotation
Due to the recent Focus nerfs,
has taken a major hit in viability. At its core, Trueshot is perhaps one of the worst cooldowns in the game. The optimal rotation during Trueshot is a bit counterintuitive now, and it doesn't feel very impactful. With the removal of BFA's
, we no longer get free casts of
. Casting every
and
proc we get during Trueshot severely Focus starves us so we much choose one or the other.
slightly changes our rotation during
:
During Careful Aim (>70%):
During
, we completely ignore our
. You prioritize
s and use
and
to generate Focus when needed. During Careful Aim, Aimed Shot does more DPS per Focus compared to Precise Shots.
Outside of Careful Aim:
Do
NOT
waste
, even during
. Without the bonus
damage that
provides, Precise Shots does more DPS per Focus.
You will cap on Aimed Shot charges and it will feel bad.
Multiple Targets
With the addition of
and
, our AoE rotation has changed a fair bit.
Use
on cooldown.
Use
on cooldown. Be sure to have at least one
and
available prior to casting it.
Use
to gain
when 3 or more targets are present.
Use either
or
to consume
. Prioritize Rapid Fire if Focus is needed.
Use
to generate Focus or during downtime.
Using Volley:
usage is a little counterintuitive. In addition to dealing damage, Volley gives us
for 6 sec. During this time, we want to cast as many
s and
s as possible since it eliminates the need to use
to proc Trick Shots, conserving both Focus and GCDs. Doing this, however, means that we are ignoring our
. It's yet another situation that feels bad to play with, but optimal gameplay here is to ignore those Precise Shots to make the most out of Volley.
Best Stats for Marksmanship Hunter in Pre-Patch
Our stat priority has changed quite a bit compared to BFA. Due to our new talent
and a few other factors, Critical Strike has skyrocketed in value for us. For pre-patch, we'll be wanting item level for the most part as Agility and Weapon DPS far outweigh secondaries.
Weapon DPS >>> Agility >> Critical Strike > Versatility >= Mastery > Haste
Weapon DPS >>> Agility >> Critical Strike > Versatility > Mastery > Haste
Weapon DPS >>> Agility >> Mastery > Critical Strike >= Versatility > Haste
The above stats are a generalization that will be sufficient for most players. That being said, I still advise you to head over to Raidbots.com to simulate your own personal character for more accurate results. As you can see with the above trend, Critical Strike is now our go-to in single-target. Mastery tends to overtake it as you add targets. While using a pet, Mastery loses value while Critical Strike, Versatility, and Haste gain value since our pet does not benefit from Mastery. I recommend gearing towards a mix of both Critical Strike and Mastery.
Best Azerite Traits for Marksmanship Hunter in Pre-Patch
As always, I highly recommend that you sim yourself to find your optimal setup. Below is a list of general Azerite traits that are solid to aim for.
Tier 1 and 2 traits haven't really changed much. You'll still be wanting to go for
,
, and
primarily.
and
are also good to go after. Other notable one-off traits such as
and
are also solid choices.
Tier 3 traits are all fairly close due to the shift in our desired stats.
,
,
, and
are all solid options.
Nothing has changed for our defensive tier. We still want traits such as
,
, and
.
Best Essences for Marksmanship Hunter in Pre-Patch
Similar to most other things for us, our choice of Essences has also changed quite a bit.
Single Target
Major:
or
Minors:
,
,

Multiple Targets
Major:

Minors:

or
Anytime multiple allies are using Worldvein, it will always be the best major essence to use. With fewer allies, or if no one is using Worldvein, Breath of the Dying and Focusing Iris are typically better in single target and AoE respectively.

I agree! Thx for that guide. Especially the part with Trueshot flooding us with aimed shots. Felt really awkward on the beta to press it and realize i cant do my rotation right anymore. I like the changes to our AOE, although i feel like a lot of our legendaries are centered around AOE-damage. Id like to have somehting for ST fights aswell

I hope they won't leave our main cooldown in this sad state. Something's wrong when your cooldown press do not bring more dps, right? How about cutting focus cost by 50% during trueshot? That would make it feel relevant and on par with BfA's version of master marksman.

Maybe a fix to Precise shots could be giving it a rank 2 that adds BfA's Master Markman talent to it, making next arcane/multi shot after Aimed Shot free. Could make space if they are going for for 1 new skill/rank upgrade every other level by making the Trap rank 2, which is unlocked at 56 and reduces Tar and Freezing Traps Cooldown by 5s, baseline and replacing it it with the aforementioned Rank 2 precise shots, next arcane/ multi shot after Aimed Shot is free. It means we do have to wait for Shadowlands to get that but its an idea to bring old mastermarksman back. this also means they could give Survival and BM a Spec specific upgrade instead of all 3 hunter specs getting the same 4 upgrades of Mend pet, Tranq shot, Traps and Kill Shot rank 2

Yea,
百发百中
needs to be reworked or buffed, in its current iteration it's the worst cd in the game.
Also i really thought
夺命之眼
would be more competitive, but i guess this is only for prepatch stuff - Flayed Shot will make it delicious.

I'm sooo looking forward to Marksmanship getting some love. To me the spec felt great in Legion and WoD, but BfA really killed it.
Thanks for the hard work putting this guide together!
