How to Play Protection Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
With the veil between Azeroth and the Shadowlands shattered, Holy Warriors of the Light will rise up to defend the innocent people of Azeroth from the great beyond. The forces of Death are on the march to conquer our world and it's up to you to stop it. Will you answer the call?
As a Paladin, you will wield the light to support your allies and smite your foes.
A simple description of the core gameplay and the fun of the Protection Paladin is throwing your shield around like Captain America, slamming your enemies with your shield, and making sure your allies survive the dangerous moments that come up in combat.
The basics are:
Use
,
, and
to build threat and Holy Power
Use
or
to spend Holy Power and keep yourself alive
Use Blessings like
,
, or abilities like
to support your team
Use
or
to control your enemies and their actions
Use unique utility like
or
to make yourself immune to damage and debuffs
Select talent options like
and
for an even greater depth of support
Paladins can be several races on both Alliance and Horde. If you’re just starting out, the race will be a cosmetic choice that won’t affect your ability to tank. This call to service goes out to everyone; Human, Blood Elf, Draenei, Tauren, and Dwarf alike.
If you’re new, feel free to read the
beginner’s guide
to learn more, after reading the rest of this one of course. :)
If you’re returning to World of Warcraft after a hiatus, check out the
rotation page
just to keep yourself fresh.
How Different Does Protection Paladin Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The Protection specialization for Paladin is different in Shadowlands Pre-Patch as it has transitioned from a cooldown/charge based system in BFA to a Holy Power-based system in 9.0.
A lot of the rotational buttons retained the core of their features like
which still silences its primary target and then bounces to nearby targets, and
which does damage and gives you armor. However, the system works just like it does for Retribution. You build a resource, then you spend it. Builders generate 1 Holy Power, Spenders cost 3 Holy Power, and you can hold up to 5 Holy Power at a time.
You have four abilities that generate Holy Power:
generates 1 Holy Power
generates 1 Holy Power
generates 1 Holy Power
generates 1 Holy Power
Then you have three ways to spend this resource:
consumes 3 Holy Power to do damage to all enemies in front of you and give you an armor bonus for a short duration.
will consume a total of 3 Holy Power to heal.
(a talent) costs 3 Holy Power to increase your secondary stats.
Your other utility spells like
or
are still on Mana and don’t use Holy Power.
New Abilities for Protection Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
There are a few important abilities coming to Protection Paladins in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch.
The most important ability that is now a part of the Protection Paladin toolbox is
. It replaces Light of the Protector in your kit and will serve as your self-heal. You would use
in the same situations as before - when you believe that you need a heal instead of using
.
The second is
, an execute style button that grants Holy Power when used. This is the iconic ability that was in Retribution’s talent grid for BFA. Now it’s class-wide.
Another set of abilities that are back are Auras.
,
, and
are the ones you’ll start with at Level 50 when you log in.
will be standard in groups as it adds passive damage reduction. You’ll want to switch to
when just doing world content. Finally, you should use
when you want to take advantage of your friend’s deaths. :)
The final ability coming back Shadowlands is
. This will allow more CC options against Demons, Undead, and Aberrations.
Additionally with return of the Holy Power system, a number of talents have returned to Protection. The last time Protection had Holy Power was in Warlords of Draenor, so if you played Protection back then you might remember a few of these:
is a new talent that allows you to cast 3
s with no cooldown. Its on the same talent row as
and
.
is a returning talent from Warlords that will give your Holy Power spenders a chance to make your next Holy Power spender free with increased damage and healing. This is on the same row as
and
.
is back. It's a 3 minute cooldown that triples your Holy Power generation for a short duration. Again this talent is on the same row as
and
.
is also returning. With this talent, your
will last 25% longer and cause your Judgment to generate 1 additional Holy Power. This is on the level 50 row with
and
.
There are also abilities and passives coming in Shadowlands itself which we will review once the time comes!
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Protection Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
With the pre-patch comes some relief for the GCD changes that were added in Battle for Azeroth. Protection Paladin was hit very hard in BFA with a GCD added to Light of the Protector,
, and
. The added GCDs hurt the flow of the spec in a very negative way.
The primary ability that was removed from the GCD was
. It was awkward to use at times as you could fall behind on threat or mitigation. However, since it was taken off the GCD,
also lost the automatic crit mechanic for our self heal. The trade is worth the quality of life as your healing is still buffed by AW's effect.
was also taken off the GCD during beta testing but since Protection didn't have
in BFA, this is just a good starting point for a returning talent in the Shadowlands pre-patch.
The GCD on
and
remain. You're still going to have manage your GCDs to properly maximize these buttons.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Protection Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The AoE Target caps added in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch do not affect Protection Paladins at all. Here is a quick refresher of how Protection abilities work in relation to existing caps.
has been capped at three targets since it was added in Burning Crusade. It is easier to gain extra hits on
in Shadowlands via the talent system than it was in Legion or Battle for Azeroth.
is not capped and is still a frontal cone with a bit of a skill shot to hit everything.
splash damage from standing in
is not capped.
is still capped to three hits per enemy per hammer as it has been since Legion. The number of times it will hit will depends on the hitbox of the enemies you're trying to hit. Some will hit 0, some will hit 3 times, and some will hit somewhere in between.
’s damage is uncapped as well.
All AoE Target Caps
How Strong is Protection Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
From an offensive perspective, Protection is one of the best tanks. You'll be able to generate solid threat and contribute meaningful damage to your group. The kit has a good mix of single target and multi target abilities making it well balanced. It also has access to burst cooldowns that can help with damage and threat generation.
From a defensive perspective, the spec is on a much more solid foundation to play than it was in Battle for Azeroth. With how they've redesigned parts of the Protection kit to account for Holy Power, Protection takes as much physical damage on average as they did in BFA. However, with higher
uptime, damage intake will be a bit smoother and less spikey.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Protection Paladin?
The biggest gameplay change is the return of the Holy Power system. Instead of focusing on managing cooldowns or charges, you’ll manage Holy Power. You’ll build and spend a resource.
For returning players, it will be harder to pool resources for
in Shadowlands, so you’ll need to plan ahead, know the encounter, and and be aware of the damage pattern. You can also pool less. In BFA, you could pool up to nine Holy Power’s worth of
or three total casts, In 9.0, you can only pool up to five Holy Power worth of
or 1.66 total casts. Planning ahead and knowing an encounter or a dungeon pull isn’t new, but the execution is going to be a bit different since you’ll have less to work with.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Protection Paladin in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Corruption was a system in 8.3 that provided significant power to Protection Paladins. Like all tanks, Protection’s damage was significantly affected by having multiple Twilight Devastations equipped. On some raid bosses, you could easily spike up to 200k DPS by getting the random proc and hitting a large number of targets.
In Mythic Plus, especially for high keys, the loss of Corruption means the loss of Versatility amp Corruptions. Protection used this in combination with Last Defender to be able to do high keys. Once you start getting to higher key levels, there is a point where
is not enough to survive the incoming damage. There was a world of difference between doing a world-class key with and without Versatility Corruptions.
The net result of losing Corruption in pre-patch means Protection Paladins will no longer have random DPS spikes that delete monsters in Mythic Plus or raids. It also means that tank threat will be a bit more stable and predictable. You won’t be seeing Protection Paladins (or any other tank class) randomly pulling aggro just because of a Twilight Devastation proc anymore.
For Mythic plus specifically, Protection Paladins will no longer be able to stack Versatility as a tool to counter large damage hits that kill you with
up. You'll have to pre-plan cooldowns and
usage to play around those scenarios again.
Best Talent Builds for Protection Paladin in Pre-patch
Two strong talent picks in all situations are
and
. They give you the best balance of increased damage and defensiveness compared to alternatives on their row. Other selected rows provide some of the best value for their respective modes of gameplay. The empty talent rows have some flexibility and could depend on the boss, the dungeon, or the content you're doing.
If you're using multiple
Azerite traits during the pre-patch period, you should switch from
to
for even more
as that will maximize that trait.

Protection Paladin Talent Guide
Best Rotation for Protection Paladin in Pre-Patch
Protection Paladin doesn’t have a set rotation. It has a priority system where we evaluate buttons to make the best use of them.
Here are some general principles of the rotation in Shadowlands Pre-Patch:
Never cap on Holy Power
Use
,
and
to build resources
Use
when you have 3-5 Holy Power.
Use
to heal yourself when you have
active and you have 40-50% health
Here is a more precise priority on how you should weigh each button both offensively and defensively.
(if you're not standing in it)
(if you're standing in it)
If you're fighting 3 or more targets, you can prioritize
as it does more damage. You can follow this priority.
(if you're not standing in it)
(if you're standing in it)

Best Azerite Traits for Protection Paladin in Pre-Patch
Here are some class-specific Azerite traits that you should chase in the pre-patch:
- You should always have one of these since you get the full value of the trait now in pre-patch. You should try to get three of these if you’re opting for
Major.
Note: You have to be in Ret. Spec to select the trait but once selected, it works perfectly well for Protection.
- You should always have one of these since the 5% more Grand Crusader proc chance is a nice quality of life for your rotation.
- This trait pairs well with
.
- This is a rock-solid trait that gives secondary stats on a fixed timer.
- This is a consistent trait that gives secondary stats all the time.
Here are some traits you don’t need to worry about anymore:
/
- These traits are duplicative with the new
talent. It's better to take
and spend your Azerite traits on something else.
- This trait has been updated to work with
. At most, you should only take one to help fill a gap during the pre-patch period. You should generally opt to take the traits above or a neutral trait if you can.
If you want more information on Azerite traits, especially the neutral traits, you should read the
Azerite trait guide for Protection Paladin
.
Best Essences for Protection Paladin in Pre-Patch
There will be three primary builds in the pre-patch.

Use this for more damage, survivability, and to take advantage of the Holy Power system!
As noted above, you should switch from

syncing Wings with a cooldown almost every time.
Note: You have to be in Ret. Spec to select the trait but once selected, it works perfectly well for Protection.

What about relentless inquisitor? It seems like a great choice now, with us spending holy power

I am not super experienced as a paladin tank but am wondering why you would not pick moment of glory over crusaders judgement, 3 insta casts back to back generating threat increase and 3 holy power seems pretty strong? I'm not a theory crafter but the utility of it seems really attractive?

I'm really looking forward to Pally tanks in SL. They can pretty much do it all - jack of all trades. They also now require a decent amount of skill to play properly, which is a good thing. I'm super glad First Avenger is a talent too because Bulwark of Light trait accounted for a lot of our healing.

About
飞舞之盾
and
光明堡垒
, don't these add up with
复仇原点
? I don't really get what you meant by "duplicative", but to me, it'd make sense that with the 3 added up, your
复仇者之盾
would hit 6 targets (4 from
飞舞之盾
+ 2 from
复仇原点
) and give you both the shields from
光明堡垒
and
复仇原点
. Am I mistaken? How does it work exactly? Also, I read the other comment about
无情审讯
not proccing from spending normal Holy Power, but has anyone tried it on Live? It'd probably be quite good if it worked.
EDIT:
飞舞之盾
and
复仇原点
do
stack, making your
复仇者之盾
hit 6 targets, haven't tested
光明堡垒
because I don't have an azerite piece with it available, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. Don't have any piece with
无情审讯
either for now at least, sadly.
EDIT 2: Managed to get my hands on a piece with
无情审讯
, and I can confirm you only gain the stacks from
神圣意志
. Sad.
