How to Play Retribution Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Retribution Paladins are holy crusaders, who use a two-handed weapon to turn the power of the light into powerful damaging abilities and bring justice and vengeance to their enemies. It's the damage specialization of Paladin and is a melee spec, although it has a few abilities that can be cast from range as well.
The core of our rotation is centered around using abilities like
and
to generate Holy Power, which is consumed to deal devastating damage with abilities like
or
. Although Paladin's mobility options are somewhat limited, you will have access to a large array of buffs for yourself and your party to help you throughout a fight, as well as strong healing capabilities for your role.
If playing a melee with strong group support and healing options and also some very powerful burst damage cooldowns sounds appealing, then Retribution might be for you.
How Different Does Retribution Paladin Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Retribution's playstyle remains largely the same going into the pre-patch. If you've been playing it for a while and enjoy the playstyle then don't worry, you won't need to learn an entirely new spec. Our abilities almost all still generate and cost the same amount of Holy Power and their priority is largely still the same as it used to be. The one exception to this is
, as it now generates 3 Holy Power instead of 5 which might take a little getting used to.
The biggest change you'll notice is that depending on the talents you pick, you may need to find keybinds for a lot of new buttons.
and
are both now baseline abilities, which isn't anything too new since they were almost always taken throughout the last expansion, but there are now a lot of new and very powerful active talent abilities for Shadowlands, like redesigned
,
or
, and
that might require finding a lot of extra keys if you want to use them.
Another difference worth noting is that
won't be usable during
in pre-patch, since the passive ability that grants this bonus isn't learned until Level 58. This is only a temporary change and you'll be able to use it during
again once Shadowlands launches.
For more information, you can check out the Retribution Paladin
Beginner's Guide
or
Rotation Guide

New Abilities for Retribution Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Retribution is going to gain quite a few old talents as baseline abilities. You'll always have access to
,
,
, and
albeit with some changes.
is a utility ability that we'll once again be able to use to either help save another player during periods of heavy damage or get maximum damage from
. Other than that, we're gaining
which won't be used very often since it requires a shield equipped to use and many of our other abilities require a two-handed weapon to be cast, and
which is a single target fear that can be cast on Undead, Aberrations, and Demons.
Auras are also returning to Paladins. These are raid-wide buffs with a restriction that only one can be used at a time per Paladin. Multiple buffs of the same type don't stack. You'll want to make sure there's one Paladin using
in your group, but if someone else has that buff covered feel free to use one of the other two.
is also available in Shadowlands but can't be used during pre-patch due to its level requirement.
- Grants a small damage reduction. Probably the most valuable aura for a raid as a whole.
- Increases mounted speed. Notably also increases the speed of
.
- Rather than being a raid-wide buff like the other auras, the Paladin using the aura gains
if an ally dies within range.
In place of the now-baseline talents, Retribution will have a lot of new (and some returning) talent options. Azerite Traits
and
are being added as
and
, giving us access to more cleave damage options.
and
both allow for more burst oriented builds on a 45 sec and 3-minute cooldown respectively.
is a brand new ability that does a large chunk of AoE damage and increases the damage that your other Holy Power spenders do to the targets, and is looking like an extremely potent option as well. On the defensive side of things,
increases the healing potential of
massively and can be very strong if you don't mind spending some Holy Power on it rather than on your damaging abilities.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Retribution Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Retribution has had a few abilities either capped or had their damage scaling changed slightly:
is now capped at 5 targets but has had its base damage buffed by about 20%.
has had its damage to its first target increased by about 50% but does much less damage to subsequent targets than it used to. It will do more damage total the more targets it hits, but the damage each secondary target receives drops off as targets increase.
remains uncapped but does much less damage than it did as a talent previously. It also no longer generates Holy Power.
remains uncapped, the same as
was.
is uncapped.
The result of these changes is that on 2 to 5 targets you'll see an increase in overall damage, but past that you'll do a bit less than you used to. Fortunately, these changes won't require any rotational adjustment since you'll be using
as long as there's more than one target, as usual.
All AoE Target Caps
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Retribution Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The only GCD change Retribution has is that
has been taken off the global cooldown. As a result it also no longer guarantees that the first
or
you cast is a critical hit, as that was added in Battle for Azeroth at the same time it was originally put on the GCD. This isn't a significant change for gameplay purposes, but it does make burst windows a little bit smoother.
How Strong is Retribution Paladin in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Our strengths remain the same as they were in Battle for Azeroth - strong burst and decent off-healing with occasional potential to make use of our utility kit of buffs for our party. In terms of healing, we are slightly worse since
was reduced from being a 3 target smart heal to a normal single target heal when it became baseline, but it still heals for an alright amount with the
talent. You're now also more free to change your talent choices depending on your circumstances, as there are fewer talents like
that will always be taken regardless of the situation, making your burst windows more adjustable both in duration and frequency.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Retribution Paladin?
The biggest gameplay difference you'll notice involves the talent combination of
and
, allowing for very strong burst on a 1-minute cooldown. This involves stacking up multiple damage buffs to maximize the damage of
, including
,
, and talents like
and
.
is a targeted ground effect, so it can be made to cast either on your character or your cursor via a macro if desired. As mentioned earlier, this talent combination requires a lot more keybinds for all of these new abilities, so it may take some time to adjust to using many more different damage cooldowns than before. For specifics on how to best perform this sequence, check out the rotation section below.
Other than that specific talent combination, Retribution's gameplay is pretty much the same as it was in Battle for Azeroth.
,
, and
are your primary Holy Power generating abilities, and you still spend it on
for single target and
for cleave damage, with
being your large damage cooldown.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Retribution Paladin in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Depending on whether you used
or
Corruptions, you might see the value of
or
Azerite Traits decrease a small amount. Other than that, losing Corruption will likely impact us much less than other specs, and on the plus side, you will no longer have to deal with casting
to dispel
or
to stun
.
Best Talent Builds for Retribution Paladin in Pre-patch
or
can both be taken instead in AoE situations where you won't be casting
as often.
is ok to take if you want more burst on a longer cooldown, but will generally not perform as well overall.
This build is much more focused around burst damage, and can do incredibly high single-target burst with all of its cooldowns up. It's a bit worse than the
build for AoE options, but its damage is much more consistent.
will provide slightly stronger and more on-demand healing than
, but at the cost of spending Holy Power on
instead of on your damage abilities. If that's a trade-off you don't mind making, it's also a good option.
If you find yourself requiring a lot more mobility,
is fine to take but is a slight damage loss since
decreases the cooldown of
.
The best talent options can change depending on the Azerite and Essences you have available, so it's always worth simming your character to make sure you're picking the right options for you. If you want a more in-depth look at the talent choices, check out the
Talents Guide
for more info.
Best Priority for Retribution Paladin in Pre-Patch
Retribution's rotation is a fairly straightforward priority, with the aim being to keep your Holy Power generators on cooldown as much as possible to maximize your Holy Power generation over a fight. You should almost always prioritize building Holy Power over spending, it as long as you aren't overcapping and wasting any. More detail is provided in the
Rotation Guide
, or you can check the
Beginner's Guide
for a quick rundown. A basic priority to follow for generating Holy Power is:
To maximize
burst you'll want to make sure you have buffs like
and
and debuffs from
and
up before you cast
.
and
(if talented) should also be delayed to align with these cooldowns, unlike how
was always best used on cooldown previously. Your opener should look something like this:
Build to 5 Holy Power
Build back to 5 Holy Power
and
Cast as many
as possible before the
debuff runs out
Use
with less than 5 seconds left on
to maximize its damage
If using
, use it just before your first Holy Power generator after
during your
window, and you only need to build to 5 once initially.
Best Stats for Retribution Paladin in Pre-Patch
Retribution's stats have always been pretty close to each other in value, and the new diminishing returns on secondary stats won't change that significantly. If you're choosing gems or between two items the most accurate answer will always be to use simulations to help inform your decision, but if you just need a quick guide this is a general stat priority.

Best Azerite Traits for Retribution Paladin in Pre-Patch
The best Azerite Traits will depend on the talents and essences you take.
Take 1
Take 1
Take 2-3
Fill the rest of your traits with stat increases like
or
, or more ranks of
Take 1
Take 3
Fill the last 2 slots with
,
, or other stat increasing traits
Fortunately our good Azerite Traits haven't changed drastically. You'll still want to take at least 1 rank of
, and 1 rank of
for cleave/M+ situations. It's worth noting that the value of
and
drops slightly without access to stat increasing Corruption, and stacking
is a bit worse since the mastery it provides also gets affected by secondary stat diminishing returns.
is slightly better since our downtime has increased slightly and
's base damage has been buffed.
is able to be used in pre-patch despite corruption effects going away. You should aim to use the highest item level piece of Azerite gear you have available for each slot, and sim your own Azerite gear since minor traits will also have an impact on what gear is best for you.
Best Essences for Retribution Paladin in Pre-Patch
is still incredibly strong despite
not being castable during
procs in the pre-patch. If you're using
, the best major essence is
, although there are a couple of competitive options like
or
as well. For minor essences,
and some combination of
,
, or
are all likely the strongest options for any build, although again you should sim the other minor options you have in case it's different for your character.

final verdict will end 1gcd before the damage from execution sentence can benefit from it, unless one of them is off the GCD.
wouldn't it be best to swap their activation?
final verdict increases all holy power spending abilities damage by 50%, execution sentence is a holy power spender.
EDIT: additionally, activating execution sentence first would allow the on cast damage from final verdict to add to the execution sentence total.

I guess the reason Santified Wrath is not recommended is because we still have light's decree? Or is it really worse than crusade? Does it stack with light's decree? I know 2 light's decrees don't stack (the duration part), but the way the description is written it looks like they might stack

You don't even mention the most OP set up the retri have atm, 3x light decree trait and Sanctified Wrath together are busted!
Allowed an enormous burst in every situation, m+ (where it shine), 2s, 3s and even in raid perform decent.
