Shadowlands is almost upon us, bringing with it Patch 9.0 and a large chunk of Class changes and updates. In this guide, we will take a look at the most significant changes for Shadow Priest, detailing how you can expect to play the spec during the Shadowlands pre-patch.

How to Play Shadow Priest in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Shadow Priests draw their power from the void and deal damage through the use of damage over time effects (DoTs) such as
,
, and
. Shadow uses a resource system called
, which is gained by casting the majority of Shadow's spells, such as
and
.
can be spent by casting
or
(while channeling
).
Shadow Priests mainly deal their damage at range and excel in multi-DoT situations on spread or stacked AoE. Shadow does struggle with mobility, but this can be circumvented by using instant cast spells while moving and pre-placing in an optimal position if you know you're going to need to move ahead of time.
Shadow Priests have access to a unique spell,
. While it's mostly useless in PvE outside of niche scenarios, it has quite a few uses in PvP situations. Priests also have the capability to pull a friendly target to their location through
, commonly referred to as Life Grip. It also has
, which has a hefty mana cost but brings good utility to your group as it works on both friendly and enemy units simultaneously.
Thematically, Shadow Priests also have access to
and
.
buffs all spell damage you deal as well as adding a dark purple aura around your character. This effect also extends to mounts and looks particularly cool on celestial mounts.
keeps the aesthetics of
but making it slightly more black. Additionally
causes your character to float, and taking damage will not remove this levitation unlike with
.
also spawns void tendrils on your body, which look like tentacles.

How Different Does Shadow Priest Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Shadow Priests received a major rework in Shadowlands.
is now a 90 second cooldown that grants you 2 charges of
thanks to
. Shadow's primary damage is still the usage of DoTs, namely
,
, and the newly added
.
will serve as your primary
spender. If you talent into
, you can use it while channeling
as your AoE spender. Shadow has been changed to be a builder/spender specialization. If you played Shadow Priest before the Legion expansion, you'll find it fairly similar to Shadow Orbs.
Outside of
being a different mechanic, the class plays relatively the same as it did in Battle for Azeroth. You still want to maintain
and
on your target. With
still being tied to
, you'll need to manually recast your DoTs more. The new passive,
, gives you the ability to cast
during
or
. You'll want to cast
in a way that you'll maintain maximum uptime on it. You don't need to worry about overwriting
as it uses an ignite mechanic that causes subsequent casts of it to contribute to it's overall damage. It's also important to note that
does not add to the duration of
.
With the big change to
, Shadow will feel quite a bit slower. Couple this with the loss of Corruptions such as
, and the spec will feel even slower. Additionally,
is no longer the main driver for our kit's interactions and most of that functionality has been shifted to
.
New Abilities for Shadow Priest in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
While not all of the abilities listed below are new, they have featured a return in Shadowlands.
Here are the new abilities for Shadow in Shadowlands. Abilities that have had a major change to their functionality have also been included in this list.
Spells/Abilities
While shadow no longer lacks for self-healing thanks to
,
, and
, it now has an on-demand instant healing ability that no longer shares a cooldown with Health Potions or Healthstones.
Shadow's Mastery was changed and is technically a new addition. Mastery is looking quite strong in the pre-patch after haste as well. This won't affect your rotation at all but slightly changes how our damage is dealt overall.
Shadow Word: Death has been added back as a baseline spell for all Priest specializations, not just Shadow. It has a special interaction with our talent
and should be used inside the execute window, preferably on targets you know you can kill with it to avoid the damage penalty.
Voidfrom received the biggest change out of all of Shadow's spells and should be considered a different skill. Insanity is no longer drained while you are in
. By default,
has a duration of 15 seconds and a 90-second cooldown. Additionally, it no longer grants stacks but instead grants you 2 charges of
, thanks to
. These 2 charges take your
off cooldown. This means you can freely use
before casting
to enter
and you'll get those charges back. Lastly,
no longer grants additional haste.
This is a new passive added in Shadowlands. While the proc chance is fairly low, it does incentivize casting our fillers,
, and
, as much as possible. You should use this proc while channeling either. If it will cap you on
it's worth casting
or
then using the proc.
Devouring Plague has returned to Shadow after vanishing in Legion. This is a slightly different DoT than we had in previous expansions and is much more powerful than before. You should cast this as much as possible.
No longer uses crits from
to spawn, and instead spawns based off casting certain spells. When you cast
,
, or
, you will spawn
that will fly to each target that has your
applied to it.
Talents
This adds some leeway to your
casts and allows you to use it back to back provided targets die, while also funneling you quite a bit of
over time.
The added damage to
is a nice perk. Additionally this will also cast
if you have
talented.
This is our AoE spender for when you're spamming
. It's a bit anti synergistic with
but packs a very big punch on its own. It's only usable while channeling
.
Previously a PvP talent, this does some fantastic AoE damage and synergizes well with
Mainly functions the same, however now has 3 charges, a minimum range of 10 yards, a max range of 60 yards, and will add a debuff to a lone target it hits. Currently
takes forever and a day to reach 60 yards, so I don't recommend casting it at max range.
This talent adds quite a bit of front-loaded burst to our
. It feels like a replacement for
.
Selecting this strongly boosts your damage in pure single target fights. Additionally, it extends the duration of
, more so if it critically strikes.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Shadow Priest in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Fortunately, Shadow Priests are fairly unaffected by the new AoE target caps, however we do have some soft caps you should keep in mind. That being said, Shadow's DoTs,
and
, are completely uncapped and instead are limited by how many you can feasibly maintain on several targets. For example, at base, the global cooldown is 1.5s, reduced by haste. The maximum number of
you can cast is 14 as they will start falling off at that point. Generally you'll never actually be fighting targets that will live long enough to spam cast
back to back like this, as it would be a DPS loss to only spam
, but it's a good number to know.
, while having a shorter duration, 16 with
, will usually be applied with
at high target counts.
is not limited to one target, so in cases of spread target fights, you should cast it on whichever target needs to take damage the most.

How Strong is Shadow Priest in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Shadow Priest looks like it will be in the upper middle of the pack in terms of DPS. Simulations have not yet been done for pre-patch. Additionally
will be useless as we no longer gain stacks of
. Shadow will still excel at multi target scenarios, and with the addition of
, we have an on demand (Insanity required) AoE spam skill.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Shadow Priest?
Since we no longer have additional haste from
, the spec will feel a little slower. Additionally, you'll spend a lot less time in
as it is now a 90 second cooldown. Instead of trying to achieve high
stacks, you'll want to maintain as much uptime of
as possible. For AoE fights,
will be our AoE spender rather than utilizing
, except in the case of spread AoE. For spread AoE,
feels like a good pick for sanity reasons as maintaining
and
on more than 4 targets can feel very cumbersome and
frees up more GCD's so you can cast more
(
where applicable) and have a higher chance of proccing
. Besides those changes, Shadow plays relatively similarly, just a bit slower. The
rotation is very similar and it's very easy to maintain
for the full duration of
.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Shadow Priest in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Shadow mainly wanted
and
Corruptions before the pre-patch. The loss of
will be a minor direct damage difference, but the loss of
will contribute to making shadow feel a lot slower to play.

That being said, here are a few talent builds that are good for default.

Best Rotation for Shadow Priest in Pre-Patch
Shadow's rotation can be broken down into simple steps, for more in-depth information, please check out

Maximize uptime of
or prevent capping
Maintain

on cooldown (with at least 40

uptime). Try to line it up with Trinkets or Bloodlust if possible.

if the target is under 20% health. If you won't kill it, make sure you don't die.

Best Stats for Shadow Priest in Pre-Patch
While simulations are not yet done for the Shadowlands Pre Patch, it is looking like Haste is still our best secondary stat, followed closely by Mastery. That being said, Intellect is king and you should prioritize item level over anything. If you're unsure, you can simulate your self using Raidbots. More of an explanation can be found in

Best Azerite Traits for Shadow Priest in Pre-Patch
Currently the best setup for traits are:

Our best trait,
doesn't provide anywhere near as much value as it did and should be replaced by literally anything else. Outside of the
proc,
looks to be a good choice to directly buff our damage.
is also free damage as you can't even trigger
unless
is on the target. Be sure to use at least one of
. Generally, you'll want to go for flat damage increases.
no longer has a corruption requirement, so may be better than the previously listed azerite traits. You can read more about that and all of the available Azerite traits

Best Essences for Shadow Priest in Pre-Patch

in nearly all scenarios with
in niche aoe scenarios as your major. For minor essences,

is absolutely busted in a good way.

I play shadow since Pandaria, this new rotation is the worst ever. You can have 3 priority spells up at the same time: MB, VB and DP. This is just plain stupid and does not feel good at all. It will be most lilkely the mashed potatoes rotation.
Also the guy who wrote this doesn't even seem like he knows what he is doing, since VB is missing completely from the rotation.

Why is Unfurling Darkness better than Fortress of the Mind for pure single target? Is the idea that you immediately re-cast VT on the same target for the bonus damage? Does that really add up to more than the increased MB/MF damage?
